Sidney Crosby and Marek Zidlicky fight.

I would say that Marek Zidlicky didn't do real well in his fight with Cindy Crosby. In fact Crosby worked him pretty hard.I would rank this fight as being a bit of a yawner. First thing both guys aren't very good or known for their fighting skills. Looks more like a purse fight between two Sissy's.

Nickname deadline still a toss-up

First off let the Standing Rock tribe do their work stop badgering them about the deadline, if you want them to sign a 30 year agreement you might need to slow down a bit and let them digest it. Second, the real dead line for getting agreement from the two tribes was/is Nov. 30, 2010 and it should have never been moved up. Lastly, I am sick and tired of all these people being in the hurry to apply for a second rate league like the Summit League.

If the Summit League is so awesome and they really want us then they can wait just a little longer, I can't see how a couple of months is going to make that much of a deal. The Fighting Sioux name is a storied and awesome logo and I would hate to lose it for a basketball game with the Oakland, Western Illinois, Oral Roberts... I mean I understand that you need a league to play in, however, you can’t play for anything until 2012 at least.
Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman Charlie Murphy has written a letter rejecting a deadline on UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname, but there are differences of opinion among State Board of Higher Education members about what that actually means.

Board Chairman Richie Smith said it’s pretty clear to him that the tribe won’t work under a deadline. If that’s the case, “I wouldn’t personally extend the deadline,” he said today. “This issue is more or less holding UND back from going on about its business,” he said.

Without a deadline extension, the board likely would ask UND to begin retiring the 79-year-old nickname, which some have called racist.

Board member Grant Shaft, who’s from Grand Forks, took a different view.

“I took it as though they are wanting to dialogue with this, as though the month of November would be useful to them,” he said. If there was indication that Standing Rock leaders are working to make a decision on the nickname, he said he doesn’t see a problem giving the tribe more time.

“I don’t want the deadline to be a deterrent in itself for the tribe from being able to speak on the issue,” he said.

The board is scheduled to meet Nov. 19 at Minot State University, and Smith said he expects the nickname deadline will come up then. There would be no special board meeting earlier than that.

Shaft said he understands there’s a Tribal Council meeting Nov. 9. If the tribe reaches a consensus on the nickname then, he said, it would affect the board’s discussion.
--------------(snip)--------------
Summit League

For some board members, Dec. 31 is another deadline. Shaft said no board member is willing to cross that threshold.

The driving force behind the deadlines is UND’s desire to apply to the Summit League athletic conference as soon as possible. The mostly Midwestern league is seen as a good fit for the university, but the league won’t consider an application until the nickname issue is resolved.

With the start of the new year, league members will begin working on scheduling, Shaft said, and it would be harmful if UND still was struggling with the nickname.

In recent meetings, board members have indicated they were anxious to move on after shuffling deadlines to wait out the Standing Rock tribe.

The Tribal Council at the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation, the other Sioux tribe in the state, has approved the nickname after a referendum in which 67 percent of tribal members gave their approval.

Shaft recognized that many board members feel what he called “issue fatigue.”

“Those of us here in Grand Forks, we’re more on the front line of the issue,” he said. “This issue for board members that aren't here in Grand Forks isn't as front and center." [Grand Forks Herald]

Standing Rock chairman wants no nickname deadline

You kind of have to wonder what this means? Sounds like he is saying we can negoiate, but... We will see what happens.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - Standing Rock tribal Chairman Charles Murphy says the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname is not at the top of his administration's priorities right now but he's willing to talk about it if no deadlines are imposed.

In a letter to University System Chancellor William Goetz, Murphy says tribal members clearly are divided over the nickname and Indianhead logo.

The NCAA considers the nickname and logo hostile and abusive. The state Board of Higher Education plans to drop them unless the Standing Rock and Spirit Lake Sioux tribes sign off on long term agreements.

Murphy says he's aware of the desire for a 30-year agreement but he says those types of conditions are "better discussed and agreed upon rather than stipulated."

His letter says he's ready to meet with board members if they're willing to talk about it without deadlines and stipulations.

Gophers coach protesting hit on Leddy.

I watched the tape of the hit and I don't think it's an illegal hit, just my humble opinion, it's probably a questionable hit but it's basically the same thing as the hit from Mike Richards on David Booth. Portwood didn't lead with his elbow and he kept his shoulder in. I mean seriously, are we going to come up with a rule now that six feet plus players can't hit ones that are under six feet? Nick Leddy knows better, you have to be aware of who is on the ice at all times, you can not leave yourself exposed on the ice especially when player like Jade Portwood is on the ice. The kid is not known for scoring goals, he is on the ice to hit players.
It was a tough hit. I don't think it was anything intentional with the kid but it was still, in my view, after watching the videotape --- the paper had an unbelievable shot of it. [See Sunday's Star Tribune Sports section.] It was a shot to the head.

"As much as you want to say it was a good hit, there are rules put in. And that's why there is zero tolerance for shots to the head. Just as in football, you don't allow crackback blocks. You don't allow blows to the head. You have rules in there to protect the players for a reason. I don't think the kid tried to, but still it was a shot to the head."

Lucia said he has already talked to Greg Shepherd, the supervisor of officials, about the play. "I talked to our referee in chief and I forwarded it and I think those things have to be looked at because that is a dangerous play," Lucia said. "Even though you are in a vulnerable position, that doesn't mean you can make that hit like that. That is my opinion. That is why the rule is in there."

One reporter after the Gophers' 4-1 victory over Alaska Anchorage, asked Lucia how a player can avoid a hit like that? "You just can't hit him in the head, plain and simple," Lucia said. "That's why it is in the rulebook. Zero tolerance.

"Look at the concussions in the game today. [Leddy] gets out because of a fractured jaw. Those are the kind of hits you want to eliminate from the game."

Lucia said he does not think Leddy will have to have his jaw wired. "I am hoping that within a week or two he can come out and skate a little bit," Lucia said, "so he can stay in conditioning. We'll see how it goes from here."

Shepherd was at the Gophers vs. Alaska Anchorage game on Sunday. But the on-ice action was very tame compared to Friday's game when there were 35 penalties called for 78 minutes.

On Sunday, there were eight minorrs, four per side, for 16 minutes total .

After the league reviews Portwood's hit on Leddy near the end of the first period, I expect he will suspended for at least one or two games. And it should happen quickly, by Monday or Tuesday.

Portwood is a 6-3, 207-pound sophomore from Victoria, British Columbia.

Michael Liambas it on Ben Fanelli

This hit was on the Sporting News hockey site and I thought I would share it with the readers. This is a vicious check and you have to wonder if the OHL's league office will suspend Liambas for additional games or not. I also wonder if some of these players aren't wearing their helmets correctly?
KITCHENER, Ont. -- A junior hockey player remains in critical condition with skull and facial fractures after a hard check into the glass during a game Friday night.

Kitchener Rangers defenseman Ben Fanelli fell to the ice after getting hit by Erie's Michael Liambas during a 4-0 victory in an Ontario Hockey League game.

Fanelli's helmet went flying during the collision, and a pool of blood from a cut on his face formed on the ice under his head. The 16-year-old player was conscious when he was airlifted to a Hamilton hospital.

Rangers CEO Steve Bienkowski said in a statement posted on the team's Web site Sunday that Fanelli was in critical but stable condition.

Liambas received a boarding penalty and was ejected from the game for delivering the hit.

A look back.

Check out this week column at the Illegal Curve. I wanted to follow up on my Illegal Curve pre-season rankings and how they where look after a few weeks into the season.

1 Denver University – (4-2-0) The Denver University Pioneers swept the hapless Minnesota Golden Gophers last weekend in two, 3-0 games at Mariucci arena. The Pioneers looked pretty good taking a part a Gophers team loaded with NHL draft choices. The most impressive stat of the weekend was that the Pioneers defense held the Gophers forward Jordan Schroeder off of the score sheet.
2 Miami University – (4-1-1) the Miami University RedHawk’s hockey team looks like they are a force to be reckoned with this season. Miami like Denver University appears that they don’t have any major flaws with their team. Miami playes their next four games are on the road and we will get to see how they measure up to Michigan in two weeks.
3 Notre Dame – The Fighting Irish have a record of (3-3-0) and have split all of their games they have played so far. The Irish split with UAH and Providence, and then they beat BU 3-0 before losing to B.C. 3-2. Jeff Jackson team has used three different goaltenders and has gotten two shut outs by two different goalies, Mike Johnson (1-0-0) and Brad Phillips (1-2-0).
4 University of North Dakota – (4-1-1) the Fighting Sioux have played pretty well in their first 6 games of this season compared to last year at this time where they were an unimpressive 2-4-0 record after six games. The Fighting Sioux have debt in all four lines. The only question mark I see in UND is the sophomore goaltender Brad Eidsness who has a propensity to give up poor untimely goals.
5 Boston University – (1-2-0) Time will tell if BU is going to be a pretender or a contender. The Terriers found out that they have lost one of their best forwards Nick Bonino 3 -4 weeks with a Shoulder injury.
6 University of Michigan – (2-2-0) I am not sure what Michigan team will show up from week to week. They have a lot of talent to go deep in the NCAA playoffs.
7 Vermont University – (2-2-0) Ditto with Vermont, they looked good in beating DU and B.C. but also lost to Merrimack College 5-2.
8 University of Minnesota – (0-3-1) The Gophers have been shutout 3 of 4 games and Jordan Schroeder has been held scoreless in 6 games after scoring 45 points as freshman. The Gophers power play looks as if they have been infected with the H1N1 virus. The Gophers have been outscored 13-3 in league games and has yet to score a goal on the power play.
9 University of Wisconsin – (1-2-1) on paper the Wisconsin Badgers appear to have one to the better defensive corps in college hockey, however, college hockey is played on the ice and not on paper. The Badges have a true test this weekend when they play New Hampshire.
10 University of Mass Lowell – (3-1-0) The River Hawks have a good record and they have beaten the teams they have on their schedule but they haven’t beaten anyone good. Their lone loss came against UNO in the championship game of the Ice Breaker Tourney in Omaha to start the season.
11 University of Minnesota Duluth – (3-2-0) we should get a better idea how the Bulldogs are in the next couple of weeks as the Bulldogs play a home series against ECAC foe Clarkson before traveling to Colorado College to play the Tigers. The Tigers are much better than people expected and the Tigers are going to be looking for revenge after UMD ended their season last year in Colorado Springs.
12 Boston College – (1-1-0) I would say that it’s early and we haven’t seen enough of this team to make an observation. This team has the ability to be very good but time will tell if.
13 Yale University – (0-0-0) Yale has yet to play a game, they have a non-conference game against Princeton this weekend.
14 Princeton University – (0-0-0) the Tigers have yet to play a game open the season against non-conference games against Brown and Princeton this weekend.
15 University of New Hampshire – (2-2-1) The Wildcats have a tough series against Wisconsin this weekend. We might know more about both teams after this weekend.
16 Northeastern University – 2-3-0 The Huskies have been beaten by some good opponents (C.C., UML, UNH) and have one quality win against C.C.
17 Saint Cloud State University – (2-2-2) After being swept to start the season with Miami University the Huskies have started to pick things up (2-0-2). The Huskies took 3 of 4 points from the UMD Bulldogs last weekend. Senior forward Ryan Lasch has been mediocre to start the season (2g-1a-3pts)
18 Northern Michigan University – 1-2-1 The Wildcats were unimpressive against BSU last weekend as they went 0-1-1.
19 Cornell University – 0-0-0 The Big Red has yet to play a game, open season against Niagara University.
20 U.S. Air Force Academy – The AFA has a 2-4-0 record that includes a 0-4 record against the soon to be defunct CHA.

Early season surprises?

BSU 3-0-1
UNO 3-0-1
Merrimack 4-2-0
Ferris State 5-1-0
Western Michigan 4-0-0

Non Conference Records

AHA 2-27-0 (.080)
CCHA 30-16-4 (.640)
CHA 7-9-2 (.444)
ECAC 15-9-4 (.607)
H.E. 16-12-1 (.569)
WCHA 12-9-1 (.568)

It could actually happen.

My prediction for the Gophers and UAA

I predict that this weekend the WCHA league office will assign a combination of Don Adam, Jon Campion, Marko Hunt and Derrick Shepherd to the Minnesota and UAA series. Also, expect WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod and Greg Shepherd to be in attendance for one or both games this weekend.

The games will be called tightly because the leagues money maker is already in danger of not getting a home playoff series or making the WCHA Final Five and just cannot happen. The Gophers must be given a life line.

My Scenario: UAA Seawolves players beware, if so much as breath on the Golden Gopher players there will be a penalty called and you will be sent to the box to feel shame. I also predict that there will be a high number of penalties called this weekend so be forewarned that there will be a parade to the penalty box. Also there will be no flow to the games what–so-ever. The UAA Seawolves will be whistled for 10-15 penalties a game. I predict a sweep and all will be fine in Rodent Land.

*Disclaimer : I wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween, remember this is humor but not outside the realm of possibility. On Saturday the NCAA Round up will be posted at 12:00.

Cup Cakes taste good.

Check out this latest blog post by Wisconsin Badgers hockey beat writer Andy Baggot, it would appear in the future that Wisconsin Badgers are going to load up on cupcake opponents and rack up wins so they can make the NCAA tourney. If I read the article right, the Badgers are going to focus on having a winning record so they can make the tourney, quantity not quality. I think the NCAA screwed up when they decreased the power rating equation from 50 percent to 21, now there will be no need for scheduling quality opponents and teams might just decide to load up on bottom feeders in the CCHA, AHA and ECAC teams to pad their stats and rack up wins and stats.
NCAA tourney formula drives changes

Eaves said recent adjustments in how strength of schedule factors into an NCAA tournament resume is driving the changes. In the past three years, the value of an opponent's winning percentage has decreased significantly in the power rating equation (from 50 percent to 21) and a school with a record under .500 can no longer qualify for an at-large berth regardless of its schedule strength or where it stands in the Pairwise Rankings.
Alabama-Huntsville, projected to be an NCAA Division I independent in 2010-11, and Massachusetts, a consistent second-division club in Hockey East, will play series here next season.

Mike Cerniglia, the UW director of hockey operations, said another non-conference home series will likely be added for 2010-11 because the Icebreaker is exempt from the normal 34-game regular season and UW prefers to have 20 home dates per season.

Even though the WCHA is adding two schools next year -- Nebraska-Omaha and Bemidji State will make it a 12-team league -- it will continue to have 28 conference games [Madison.Com]

Gaborik's revenge.

I really like Michael Russo’s hockey articles and I think he is one of the best in the business and this latest article on former Wild star Marian Gaborik is top shelf. It’s almost as if Gabby could see this coming.

You have to wonder how long the Wild Management will hold on to first round bust and dead weight Benoit Pouliot and James Sheppard? I honestly think that Richards has played them to see if they will play out of their funk and they haven’t. Now newly acquired forward Petr Sykora has already played himself out of the line up. Someone needs to tell the lazy forward that you can't score if you're sitting in the stands or the pressbox.

I have followed this team since their inception but they are God awful right now, they aren’t good on defense, they can’t cycle the puck, they spend long periods of time watching the opposition shooting on their net, you almost wonder if former coach Jacques Lemaire was right there isn’t enough talent to push the puck up ice and play an up tempo game.
As the Wild keeps losing (it is 3-9), Gaborik keeps scoring (10 goals), although in a fitting twist of irony, Gaborik's St. Paul homecoming is threatened tonight because of that oh-so familiar "lower body" injury. He hasn't skated since Monday.

But let's be honest: Gaborik's fast start under the Broadway spotlight was as predictable as a rush-hour traffic jam through the Lincoln Tunnel.

If you're a disgruntled, Gaborik-loving Wild fan who plans to spend the next five years keeping one eye on the Rangers, you're going to give yourself an aneurysm by January.

Gaborik, tied for second in the NHL with 10 goals and third with 18 points, is an incredible talent. From a goals-per-game standpoint since the lockout, Gaborik's name can be uttered in the same breath as Alex Ovechkin and Ilya Kovalchuk. The only thing that's impeded Gaborik from becoming a true superstar is that dirty five-letter word that starts with "G" and ends with "roin."
--------------(snip)--------------
In most cases, stars are home-grown draft picks, which is why it's imperative the Wild starts developing these players. The Wild has nothing coming in the near future as far as skilled forwards. Nothing.

This is a franchise that has managed to draft and develop arguably one top-six forward since 2002 -- Pierre-Marc Bouchard -- and three in its history -- Gaborik, Mikko Koivu and Bouchard. It botched the 2004 first-round selection of A.J. Thelen, and it appears the Wild flubbed the 2005 and 2006 drafts with Benoit Pouliot and James Sheppard.

That's why even though it will be painful for the Wild and its fans, losing, real losing, has its benefits. It won't be fun, but a high draft pick next summer will help the Wild rebuild. This team needs an influx of young talent. It needs to develop another Gaborik.

Gaborik wasn't perfect. He had defensive deficiencies. He often was injured. He might even have been "one-dimensional." But he possessed the dimension teams need: He scores goals.

And as often is the case, you don't realize what you're missing until it's gone.

Mary Ann doubtfull for Wild game.

You have to wonder if the Ranger fans have accepted the fact that Marian Gaborik is not going to play every game of the season, ever. As a Wild fan we have seen this all before. Marian Gaborik is injury prone and a medical mess. There is no readon for Gaborik to worry, has his cushy 8.5 million a year salary or what ever it is that Rangers are paying him to fall back on. Gaborik will play when he wants to and when he feels up to it. Don't expect him to play when he is 85%. Not going to happen folks, it doesn't matter what some posters at SBNation say, it is what it is. Wait till Gaborik plays in the Stanley Cup playoffs and goes oh-for the series. I am going to enjoy watching this soap opera unfold.
Marian Gaborik certainly didn’t sound hopeful today that he’d be able to play tomorrow night, which would ruin his homecoming to Minnesota. The short version: He’s going to make the trip, he’s still sore, he lists himself as day to day, he’ll try to skate tomorrow morning and see how he feels, he won’t try to rush himself back and put himself at further risk for injury.

Still not definitive word on what his injury his but there seems little disputing that it’s a right leg issue. Gaborik had some ink marks just above his right knee, indicating perhaps a thigh or a hamstring problem. His right knee was not wrapped but it could be a knee issue. Gaborik said he was hurt in a collision in front of the net, not along the boards as first believed, and he played a shift after hurting himself. He initially thought the injury was worse.

“It’s not that serious,” Gaborik said. “I thought it was going to be worse the way it felt. I have to make sure I do the right thing and treat it and take it day by day. It doesn’t feel great but it feels better.”
[Ranger Rants]
Here is another quote from Steve Zipay of Newsday that doesn't think that Gaborik will play until the Bruins and Rangers meet on Sunday afternoon. If it's not serious why is the injury keeping you out of the line up.
Personally, I believe the Slovakian right winger isn't playing until Sunday afternoon against Boston in the Garden, but there's a chance he'll dress in Minnesota, where he played eight years, on Friday night.

Standing in the locker room with reporters after another practice in which he did not participate ---he was receiving treatment on his right leg, possibly thigh or hamstring, the club is not disclosing---he called himself "day-to-day."

Not playing would be disappointing, Gaborik said. “We don’t play them that often. Definitely it would be something special.”

He confirmed that he was still sore from a front of the net collision late in the third period against Phoenix on Monday, but would be on the plane to Minneapolis this afternoon. The team's top scorer, with 18 points, said he initially thought the injury was more severe.

“It’s not that serious,” said Gaborik, who skated another shift after the hit before shutting down. “I thought it was going to be worse the way it felt. I have to make sure I do the right thing and treat it and take it day by day. It doesn’t feel great but it feels better."

Weekend Match Ups (Sioux 7)

Well the two weeks are in the books. I noticed that there were 4 shut outs this past weekend quite a few considering that's out of 10 league games. Could this be the year of the goalies in the WCHA, we will have to wait and see. This week we only have three WCHA match ups.

Here are the current WCHA standings

WCHA

St. Cloud State at Michigan Tech
Last weekend the Huskies from SCSU took 3-pts from the visiting Bulldogs of UMD, and the Huskies from MTU were sweep at World Arena by the CC Tigers.

SCSU got some PPG's and 2 SHG's against UMD to take three points. The shocking part is that Lasch got one goal and Roe had two assist on the weekend. SCSU needs to have scoring from their other lines to win, and that is what they did. If their top line gets it going, and the other lines continue to produce, they could really start burning up the ice. The boys from MTU scored once on Friday, but five times on Saturday. They held a 4-3 lead on Saturday after 40-minutee, and then the skis came off the sled, giving up 5 goals in the third. MTU has given up 18 goals in 4 games, that's 4.5 GAA for the team. MTU needs to stop the bleeding if they want to win some games and get out of the graveyard. I'm going to say the Huskies from SCSU take 3-pts this weekend.

Alaska-Anchorage at Minnesota
Last weekend the Seawolves split at home against the Sioux and the Gophers were swept at home by the Pioneers.

I watched both UAA-UND games last weekend, and both UM-DU games too. I have to say that the ref's did a great job in the Friday night UAA-UND series, hats off to Tim Walsh and Scott Bakol (not so good on Saturday). Also props go to the UAA announcer Kurt Haiyder (spelling?) he does an excellent job with the play by play, fun size candy bars go to Kurt. The Sioux skated circles around UAA on Friday, but the Seawolves responded on Saturday. UAA held the Sioux to 3 shots in the second period and gave them very few quality scoring chances all game. If the Seawolves play defense the way they did on Saturday the Gophers may not get any treats this weekend. The Gophers have now been shut out in 3 of their last 4 games, ouch, thus it' no surprise they haven't scored a power play goal either. UM played with good solid efforts both nights but didn't have many quality scoring chances, credit DU's defense and goalie with that effort. The shots on goal were 34-30 DU, and 30-26 UM respectively last weekend. Those numbers considered, things might be on the up tick for both the offense and defense at the U of M. The Gopher-ville faithful still have reason to be spooked, with the obvious lack of scoring. Their question is "when will we score a goal?" I say they will score this weekend. I'm going with a SPLIT.

Minnesota State at #2 Denver
Last weekend the Mavericks split at home against the Badgers and the Pioneers swept the Gophers in Minneapolis.

Denver looked really good for a team that was suffering from the flu last weekend. The Mavericks rebounded after getting waxed 6-0 on Friday, with a 3-2 win Saturday. The Mavericks will have to be even better this weekend if they want to get some points at Magness Arena. MSUM has given up 16 goals in 4 league games, they have to play better in their own end and stay out of the penalty box. DU will look to keep their shut out streak intact when they return home. DU had given up 14 goals in 4 non-conference games. I think the Pioneers might worry about a let down this weekend after a road sweep. I'm going to call a SPLIT, MSUM Friday, DU Saturday.

NON-CONFERENCE

New Hampshire at #19 Wisconsin
Last weekend the Wildcats beat fellow Hockey East teams Northeastern and Maine, and the Badgers split a pair at MSU-Mankato.

The Badgers sprung to life with a 6-0 drubbing of Mankato last Friday. They may have gotten more points on the weekend if not for two 5-minute major penalties in the 3rd period of Saturday's game. Now that UW is up to speed, having played 4 WCHA games, they are ready to massacre a Hockey East team. I haven't seen or know much about UNH, they are 2-2-1 on the season with a lose and a tie versus Miami (OH). This series could help the WCHA as a whole if the Badgers sweep the Wildcats.
We ALL have to cheer for our WCHA brothers in non-conference play. Badgers SWEEP and the Wildcats end up going home with only some candy bars.

Clarkson at Minnesota-Duluth
Last weekend the Golden Knights (ECAC) beat St. Lawrence (ECAC) 4-1, and the Bulldogs got one point from a visit to St. Cloud.

CU is 3-2-0 this season, with the wins coming at home and the loses on the road. CU is a small school, about 3000 students located in Potsdam, NY. CU was picked to finish 11th in the 12 team ECAC in their preseason coach's poll. Again I haven't seen CU play and I'm not that familiar with them. I'm going with the Bulldogs in this series, given recent success at home in the DECC and CU hasn't won on the road yet. Again we ALL need to cheer for our WCHA friends especially in non-conference games, Bulldogs SWEEP, CU weeps.

N.D. higher ed board chancellor willing to extend UND nickname deadline

There is no need to be in such a hurry, good solid long term agreements are not made in haste. Per the article UND has until February to win the approval of both Sioux tribes in the state.
BISMARCK — The chancellor of the North Dakota University System says he’s willing to grant the Standing Rock Sioux tribe 30 more days to consider UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

Saturday is the deadline for Standing Rock leaders to weigh in on the debate. Some tribal members want to put the issue to a vote.

Chancellor William Goetz said he talked with tribal Chairman Charles Murphy on Wednesday. He said the Tribal Council is not scheduled to meet until the week of Nov. 9.

The state board has said it will drop the Sioux nickname and logo unless it gets long-term agreements from Sioux tribes.

Murphy told KNOX radio of Grand Forks earlier that he knows some people support a tribal vote on the issue but said it’s not clear if or when that will happen.

Under terms of a settlement with the NCAA, which considers American Indian nicknames offensive, UND has until February to win the approval of both Sioux tribes in the state. The Spirit Lake tribe has approved the nickname, but the Standing Rock tribe has not.

How long will Wild fans tolerate this?

This clip sums up the Wild season so far. Donna from Running with the Dogs inspired this question; how long with the 18,568 screaming, adoring fans put up with this crap and stop coming to the games? I said I wouldn’t walk across the street, buy cheap tickets from a scalper and sit in the upper deck to watch this crap.

Then I had an epiphany, it just came to me. I want to know if Richards and Fletcher are playing for the number one overall draft choice in hopes of getting a Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin or even a John Tavares. Based on the talent the Wild have this season it probably wouldn’t be that hard, there is also a lot of dead weight on this team. First round bust(s) Beniot Pouliot (1g-2a-3pts) actually got an assist tonight, and then he acted like he has scored a goal during the Stanley Cup playoffs. James Sheppard (0g-0a-0pts) has another unproductive night and again put up a goose egg on the score sheet. Why are these two clowns still here?

Positives +

I was happier than hell when the Wild scored three goals on four shots during the second period, it brought tears of joy to my eyes. Brent Burns got things rolling as he scored a nice goal on the power play, Cal Clutterbuck scored a beautiful goal on a slap shot and that goal was followed by a gritty workman like goal that was also a thing beauty as the Irish man Owen Nolin power the puck past the Predators goalie. The Wild were rolling and then they quit.

Wild Fans how long to we put up with this crap?

Teen's death hits Blake hard.

Former Fighting Sioux hockey player and current Maple Leaf Jason Blake apparently knew the 13-year-old hockey player Evan Frustaglio that died from H1N1 last week. This young kid was healthy and yet this virus took his life, it breaks your heart. I think this really puts things in perspective. I just hope that we can beat back this damn virus.
The death of 13-year-old Evan Frustaglio from the H1N1 flu virus hit hard for one Toronto Maple Leafs player.

Two years ago, Leafs forward Jason Blake was new to the team and the city and struggling to deal with the news he had chronic myelogenous leukemia, a rare but treatable form of cancer. However, the little boy next door who loved hockey always made him smile.

“‘I can’t imagine what they are going through,” Blake said Wednesday morning of his former Etobicoke neighbors, the Frustaglio family, two days after Evan died from the flu. “They are a great family with great kids. Evan was a hell of a hockey player.

“It’s tough. My prayers and thoughts go with them.”

Blake, his wife Sara and their three children lived in the house next door to the Frustaglios for the 2007-08 season, his first in Toronto after signing a five-year $20-million (U.S.) contract with the NHL team. It was a difficult year for Blake, as his illness weighed heavily on his play. While the disease was treatable with regular medication, Blake went from 40 goals the season before with the New York Islanders to 15 with the Leafs.

Things were a little better at home, though, as Paul and Ann-Marie Frustaglio welcomed the Blake family to the neighbourhood.

“We became good friends with them,” Blake recalled as the Leafs got ready to play the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night. “They showed us the ropes when we got to town. They were our next-door neighbours, their kids came over and played driveway hockey. We had dinners together.

Big Shocker: Gaborik doubtful for Wild game

Honestly, you just can not make this stuff up; this is unfolding into a pretty good drama. Some might say that this is poetic justice that Marian Gaborik is doubtful for the game against the Wild. I would love to be at the game and be able to boo Gabby as he skates out on the ice at the Xcel Energy Center.
NEW YORK — Minnesota Wild fans anticipating the return of erstwhile superstar Marian Gaborik on Friday night likely are in for a disappointment.

The first-year Rangers right-winger will travel to Minnesota for his team's only game in 2009-10 at Xcel Energy Center, but a leg injury threatens to ruin the homecoming.

Gaborik injured his leg late in Tuesday night's 5-2 victory over Phoenix, a game in which he scored two goals and added an assist.

He and the team emphasized the problem is unrelated to his hips or groin muscles, which have plagued him most of his career. Gaborik will not play tonight against the Islanders and his status for Friday is doubtful.

Gaborik, the Wild's first draft choice who played eight seasons in Minnesota, signed a five-year, $37.5-million contract with the Rangers after Minnesota declined to make him an offer upon becoming a free agent July 1.

In the Big Apple, he is off to his best start in seven years. Gaborik is tied with Anze Kopitar of Los Angeles for the league lead in goals with 10, and his 18 points are second only to Kopitar's 21.
The always colorful interview that is New York Ranges head coach John Tortorella, I wonder how many times Torts has taken Larry Brook’s head off.
Gaborik came out of the trainer's room at the Garden late Monday night and said the injury was unrelated to the hip and groin ailments that have bothered him in the past, and John Tortorella stressed that again Tuesday while saying that he wasn't overly concerned with the injury.

"It was a little sore, so we just kept him off the ice," the coach said. "It has nothing to do with any of his (past) injuries."

Asked to confirm whether it was a lower-body injury, Tortorella said, "It's a body injury."

Grand Forks Man Hurt in Sioux-Gopher Hockey Fight Moved to Rehab

Sounds like the Jason Smith's condition is improving.
A Grand Forks man hurt in a fight after the Sioux-Gopher hockey game is still in the hospital but has been moved to Altru's rehab center.

34-year-old Jason Smith of Grand Forks was severely hurt in the fight.

Police say 28-year-old Peter Chwialkowski (fee-uh-cuss-key) hit 34 year old Jason Smith of Grand Forks.

Chwialkowski faces an aggravated assault charge.

He has been released after posting $1,000 cash bond.

According to Jason Smith's caringbridge site, during the fight he fell to the ground, hitting his head on the concrete.

The site says Smith had surgery to remove pieces of shattered skull and doctors inserted plates and 65 screws.

It says he will now have physical therapy, speech therapy and respiratory therapy for 8 hours each day. [WDAZ]

WCHA coming down on CFB's?

It would appear that the WCHA is going to be cracking down even harder on the checking from behind infractions this season [props]. Wisconsin's forward Craig Smith got an additional game suspension on top of his game disqualification that he received during last Saturday night's game against the Mavericks. Smith checked Mavericks player Geoff Irwin from behind, causing an undisclosed upper body injury. Irwin is out of this weekend's line up as a result of the violent check from behind. I think this ruling sets a good precedent; if a player tries to plant an opposition player into the boards with a bush league illegal checking from behind play, that player should be punished accordingly. I wish this policy would have been in play earlier.
Smith originally received a major penalty and game disqualification for checking from behind against Minnesota State-Mankato Oct. 24. That meant Smith would have to sit out Friday's series opener.

But Eaves said he was notified by the WCHA that Smith has had another game added to that punishment. Eaves didn't disagree with the action because Smith didn't appear to slow down when he crosschecked Mankato left winger Geoff Irwin into the boards in the third period of a 3-2 loss.
