Badgers and Sioux the match up.

This weekend's action between the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux 1-3-0 and the Wisconsin Badgers 0-5-1 in the grand scheme of things might actually prove to be a pivotal game for both teams. You want your team to win now so you don't have to worry about every win and loss later on in the season. Even though it is early in the season the Fighting Sioux do not want to go 1-5-0. It would be a big hole for them to dig themselves out of.

Anything less than 2 points for either team this weekend could end up being very devastating in the grand scheme of things, however, if you go on past history it would appear that the Sioux don't really get interested in winning before the first of the year. I would like to see this trend change.

I would have seen this article a little earlier today if my paper boy from the Grand Forks Herald had delivered my paper on time; I got the last three days papers today. Naturally I am not a happy camper. I actually had to call the Herald office today and ask them why they hadn’t delivered it in the last three days. I wanted to ask the lady to remind me why it is beneficial to pay for a newspaper I can’t read because it didn’t show up at my door.

The only reason that I get the Grand Forks Herald because I like their sports page the rest of it is basically AP stories and garbage. The Herald is a good way to follow Fighting Sioux sports, especially hockey. Incidentally, Brad has a really neat article on the shootout and how the Sioux players are for it.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association coaches largely have been against the shootout. Minnesota coach Don Lucia and Denver coach George Gwozdecky used the WCHA’s annual media conference call as a platform to voice their opposition to the shootout.

But not everyone feels that way.

UND coach Dave Hakstol said he thinks shootouts would be good for the league. His players agree.

“It’s unfortunate we’re not using the shootout in the WCHA this year,” Hakstol said. “I think it’s going to be a real source of excitement in the other leagues. It is in the NHL. You can debate up and down the subject as to whether it is legitimate or good for the standings. One thing that can’t be debated is that it’s exciting for the fans.”

Halloween Weekend Games (Sioux 7)

Since Halloween is this weekend it is nice that all the college hockey fans will be treated, not tricked, with some old WCHA rivalries and some new rivalries too. So lets take a look at the game candy we will be eating up, yum yum yum.


Lets start out with the CC-DU series this weekend. CC and DU enter this Friday Sunday series with 2-0 league records and 4-0-2 and 4-1-0 overall records respectively. CC is currently ranked #1 and DU is #4 in the latest USCHO poll. This also is their battle for the GOLD PAN, well 2 of the 4 games, with the winner at the end of the season receiving the GP for the series winner. Both teams are playing well early this season, and not seeing either of them play yet, I will call this one a split, the home team wins game.


The next big rivaly that will be renewed this season is UW at UND for pair of contests. Both the Badgers and Sioux are off to "slow" starts, but UND showed some signs of life against MSUM with a third period rally with four goals. The Badgers are giving up a slug of goals (30 goals in 6 games) this season, which in not their M.O. I think the woes for the faithful in Madison will get down right scary after the halloween weekend. UND will not be giving the Badgers any candy this weekend, they will play trick on them and take four points. You can almost hear the screams coming from Wisconsin already.


#12 MSUM vs #5 UM - I think it is safe to say that the Mavericks will want some revenge, to put it mildly, after last years play-off series with the Gophers. This is a goofy set up, one game at Mariucci arena (UM's home game) and one at the Xcel center (MSUM's home game). I wonder why the decided to have their home game away from the friendly confines of the Alltel center? Money? I think this should be one hellava series, MSUM owns a 3-1-0 record and UM has a 3-0-1 record. I like the way MSUM is playing right now and UM is doing well too, but I'm taking MSUM to take 3 points this weekend.


UAA at MTU - UFF-DA, thats my norweign side coming out. This series could go along way for either one of these teams is they can get a sweep, the four points are critical. I know it is early in the season, but if one, or both, of these teams wants to avoid a bottom half finish they need points. I'm hoping Alaska can prove me wrong with picking them to finish tenth. The Seawolves are actually putting some goals up on the board, and thats what the doctor ordered for them, so the medicine is working so far. So, here is my "upset" special of the week, the Huskies in Houghton accidentally give all their candy to the Seawolves (sorry MeanEGirl).


SCSU and UMD have the weekend off

Wild aren't good against Stars in Dallas...

I had to take a second look when I read this clip in the Star and Tribune... I wonder if there is any way we can blame Norm Green for that? LOL...

The Wild (6-1-1) dropped its ninth consecutive game (0-7-2) in Dallas since a 3-2 overtime vicory on March 21, 2003. That ties the franchise record for longest winless streak in an opposing arena.

Here is what New Jersey Devils coach and former NHL player Brent Sutter had to say about Doug Weight's legal hit on Carolina Hurricanes Brandon Sutter (his son). Interesting, you have to wonder if anything will come out of this next time the two teams play?

Sutter said that when he played, such a hit would lead to repercussions. "I'm not talking about suspensions or penalties, either," Brent Sutter said. "If a player got hit in the head, whether it was clean or dirty, you knew what was going to happen. It was going to be a long night for the guy who did the hitting. And the next time, it would be a long night.

"People may say I'm old-school," Brent Sutter said. "The game today is better in a lot of areas. But in some areas, it's not and it's troublesome. There is a lack of respect for opponents' players. It's the way the game is played today, and there are significant injuries. It is what it is."

WCHA on Shootouts.

This was over on INCH. I agree with the article that eventually the NCAA is going to settle ties via the shootout just like they do in the NHL. I agree with Joe Bertagna its coming eventually. Of course it will be fun, yet predictable to see the anti-shoot out people come out of the wood work to complain about the shootout being a gimmick.

INCH on the shootout: I would’ve hated to travel 13 hours one way and 14 hours home to lose in a shootout,” said Owens, who has plenty of shootout experience from years of coaching in the USHL. “The only value it adds is entertainment for the fans. You can play a great road game, earn a 2-2 tie, lose in a shootout and feel like you lost the game. We went to Clarkson, a tough road trip, and came away with a split. And I’m fine with that.”

The CCHA, along with the women’s leagues in Hockey East and the WCHA, are using shootouts to settle tie games this year. And some college hockey higher-ups - most notably Hockey East commissioner Joe Bertagna - have predicted to INCH that shootouts are going to be the normal tiebreaker in all of college hockey within a few years. But for now, many are watching closely to see how they affect the CCHA standings.

Even after his team won a shootout with Air Force in a holiday tournament last season, Minnesota coach Don Lucia is a vocal opponent of the procedure. He notes that the CCHA is only using them for standings purposes, and that games tied after five minutes of overtime still count as a tie for NCAA purposes. Lucia told INCH that if shootouts are such a great idea, he feels the CCHA should have the courage to let the results (win or lose) count for NCAA purposes.

The entertainment value of the shootout is noted by Denver coach George Gwozdecky, He thinks they’re fine in the NHL, where you play 84 games that count, but feels that in a 28-game WCHA schedule, too much emphasis could be placed on the results of shootout. Gwozdecky said he also hates the idea of playing a team game for 65 minutes, then deciding who wins or loses with a contest that pits two individuals against one another.

Tim Conboy vs Steve Downie; ouch he bit me...

The Rink Rat gave me a heads up on this fight video. First of all, I can't believe that I had missed this story and not heard about this one until this evening.

Check out the fight video, typical Downie stuff hacking someone with his stick. That guy will get his someday. Honestly, I have to say that Steve Downie is a disgrace to the game of hockey and one of the biggest hacks to ever play the game and I love watching him get pounded on.

That being said apparently we are going to have to send Tim Conboy to get his rabies shots because it is alleged that Conboy bit Steve Downie on the hand actually drawing blood and leaving teeth marks. Yeah; that's right, Tim Conboy bit super hack Steve Downie on the hand. Since when did hockey players start acting like a bunch of 5 year old girls? I would be willing to bet this isn't the last time we hear about this.

The AHL should be looking into a suspension for Albany River Rats captain Tim Conboy, who was assessed a fighting major, instigation and unsportsmanlike minors, a game misconduct for instigating and a game misconduct for "persisting in a fight," following a high-sticking incident and fight with Steve Downie during the Phantoms' 3-0 win Saturday afternoon.
"I've never heard of [persisting] in a fight before," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. "The report I got was that [Conboy] bit Downie on the hand. He had blood and teeth marks on his hand."

I found this article in the Pioneer Press newspaper site and I thought some of the posts were interesting, and thought provoking. I listened just brifely to KFAN the other day and there has definately become a huge void that was the PA and Dubay show. Actually the show has sucked since Jeff left/has been fired. I only PRAY that KFAN can find a suitable replacement that doesn't bore the hell out of me.

WHY THE DOUBLE STANDARD FOR CELEBRITIES?
So Dubay clearly has a problem and maybe this is the thing that gets him turned around.

But why are we as a society so quick to throw people to the wayside once they make mistakes? We'll allow actors and athletes and public figures to go to rehab countless times, be charged with everything under the sun, go through every imaginable scandal possible, but we will not allow a guy like Dubay to get a hold of his problem, see if he can recover and allow him back on the air? Why?

Why are common people not allowed the same rope that we give public figures? I speak from personal knowledge. I worked my tail off for 15 years, provided a great life for my family, never got into trouble, not even a traffic ticket. Then, I get into a bit of trouble...similar to Dubay and all the sudden I am an outcast...not to be trusted. Even though I have been through two years of rehab, counseling, programs...You name it.

Jeff Dubay deserves a chance to get his life back on track and be welcomed with compassionate arms back to KFAN.

Goon goes Five Hole... NCAA round up

Wisconsin @ University of North Dakota

The Wisconsin Badgers (0-5-1) have given up an unimpressive 5 goals or more in five of six games this season. Wisconsin usually known for it airtight defense is looking more like Swiss cheese, full of holes. It will be interesting to see what Badgers team comes to Grand Forks, ND this weekend.

Up front the Wisconsin Badgers by freshman Jordy Murray (1-3-4) and junior Michael Davies (2-2-4). Incidentally the top point getters for the Wisconsin Badgers are a couple of defenseman Sophomore Ryan McDonagh (2-3-5) and much heralded freshman Jake Gardiner (0-5-5).

North Dakota on the other hand has one win to its credit in four games and has given up an unimpressive 16 goals in 4 games. In the goals-against column those numbers will need to improve if the Sioux are going to make another run to the Frozen Four this season. In goal for the Sioux much heralded freshman Brad Eidsness has been the better of the two goalies (1-1-0) goals against average 4.00 and a 0869 save percentage. While his numbers are unimpressive he did play better in his second start against Minnesota State.

Upfront for the Sioux are lead by 2007 Hobey Baker winner senior Ryan Duncan (1-2-3) and Senior Ryan Martens (2-1-3)
Prediction: Sioux 3 points

Minnesota State @ Minnesota

On paper this should prove to be a good series. This series is the rematch of last season’s first round WCHA playoff series between the Mavericks and Gophers. The Gopher hooked, slashed and held their way to win the series when all three games went to over time. Both teams are lead by stellar goaltenders so expect two low scoring games.

MSU-M is lead by rock-solid senior goaltender Mike Zacharias (3-1-0) goals against average 2.25 save percentage of .928, who has been a solid reliable goaltender in 3+ seasons at MSU-M (34-25-10). Zacharias was undefeated until the Mavericks lost a 4-3 game to the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota two Saturdays ago.

Minnesota is lead by sophomore goalie Alex Kangas (3-0-1) goals against average 1.72 and a save percentage of .936 who has been pretty sharp so far this season stopping 103/110 shots.

The Mavericks are an older team and the Gophers have 13 freshmen on this season’s roster.
Prediction: Split

FSSN to air both Sioux and BADgers games this weekend...

There has been some concern that Saturday's game between the Fighting Sioux and Wisconsin Badgers isn't going to be on FSSN I called the WDAZ office and the woman I talked to said all home games are supposed to be on FSSN. I told her that it wasn't on the WDAZ web site and that there was some fans that are concerned that game wasn't going to be on this Saturday night. WDAZ is looking into the matter. The number to WDAZ is 701-775-2511.

Interesting UND drops two spots and they didn't play and Cornell goes up one spot and they didn't play this weekend either. Media darling Princeton dropped in the poll as well... I am surprised that C.C. remained at number one and they didn't win a game this weekend. I think this season there is a lot of parity.

Manny Legace gets hurt on Palin's rug.

Here is the video of how Manny Legace injured his leg on the Rug that Sara Palin used to walk out on to the ice to drop the puck before the Blues and Kings game. I think the arena staff really dropped the ball on this one, this is was an unfortunate and avoidable incident.

Manny Legace injured his hip flexor by slipping on the red carpet put out for Palin as she walked out on the ice for the ceremonial opening faceoff. Legace sat out the second and third periods of the Blues 4-0 loss to the Kings.

So one person loss is another person's gain, so due to the lower body injury to Manny Legace, former Univesity of Maine goalie Ben Bishop was called up to play for the Blues, he had a shut out going until he suffered a lower body injury. You can't make this stuff up folks.

St. Louisan Ben Bishop, 21, making his first NHL start in front his hometown fans, was on the verge of a personal shutout before leaving early in the third period with a lower-body injury. Marek Schwarz closed out the win, which was a bonus for a team already dealing with injuries to Manny Legace (hip) and Chris Mason (appendectomy).

"(Bishop) did really well," said Blues center Andy McDonald, who had three assists. "It's not easy ... first NHL game ... he got some time (Friday) night, but to have the start, he played real solid for us. He made some key saves and you need that. However long Manny is out, we don't know that, but obviously we've got a lot of depth, and they played extremely well tonight."

I found this while surfing the net and it appears the the media held off on reporting this story. I am actually shocked at this revelation. I expected them to be all over this with a feeding frenzy. I have never heard of the Minnesota Post until today.

How the Strib got scooped on KFAN host Dubay's arrest
A little after lunchtime Friday, a source sent me a tip: KFAN radio host Jeff Dubay had been arrested for felony narcotics possession.

I groaned, and not just because I was trying to wrap up a week’s work. In the '90s, I was a KFAN host, and Jeff was effectively my sidekick. He was a good guy and almost hysterically into sports, a trait he and other KFAN hosts have successfully played off of ever since.

I checked the Ramsey County Jail bookings and Dubay’s arrest popped up. No one had broken the story, but I did a gut check and decided I didn’t have the stomach to “out” Jeff’s troubles — the scoop just didn’t seem worth it given the world of hurt he must be in.

Friendship is a media reporter’s biggest conflict, but I rationalized my judgment this way: surely the daily press was already hot on the trail and I’d get beat anyway. (After all, I found the booking record on the PPress website!)

A KFAN source confirmed that mine was not the first call he’d received on the matter. Having wimped out, I sat back and watched to see how the news would emerge.

That evening, PiPress broke the story (I think); the bust led WCCO-TV’s Friday 10 p.m. newscast. From the Strib: nothing about Dubay on the website — and nothing in Saturday’s paper.

Phil Kessel is turning into the sniper that the Bruins need him to be. In last night's 2-1 shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Kessel was both the Bruins' only goal scorer in regulation as well as the shootout (which saw the B's fall 2-1 in six rounds).

It all started last spring, when Kessel was benched by head coach Claude Julien after Game 1 of a playoff series against the top-seeded Montreal Canadiens. Kessel was labeled as soft. But after being reinserted into the lineup in Game 5, he was the most dominant player on the ice, period.

The move undoubtedly lit a spark under the 21-year-old forward, and the momentum has carried over.

Joe Finley's favorite dance partner Blake Wheeler has seen his role diminish with the Bruins. I kind of figured it would be a slow learning curve for a guy that has been slow to develop in college after being selected 5th over all in the first round of the NHL draft.

Blake Wheeler is learning how challenging life as an NHL rookie can be. As his ice time diminishes, rookie plays a different role The 22-year-old forward had a lights-out training camp. In his first regular-season appearance, his first shot found the back of the net.

More recently, Wheeler has been put into the role of a grinding energy guy, with less ice time to do his work.

"It's just a different role," he said. "Obviously, when you're out there more often, you have a bigger impact and it's easier to find a groove out there.

"Whichever role you're put in, you've got to find the best way to excel in it. It's just a different role, so you have to find a new way to try and contribute every night."

Analysis

I think the biggest shock of the weekend might be the series between Miami Redhawks and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Miami Redhawks sweep the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend. The Miami Redhawks lost all American forward Ryan Jones F (graduation), Alec Martinez F and Jeff Zatkoff G (to the NHL) and the Redhawks have not missed a beat.

So the big question is; what are we to make of Notre Dame? Are the Irish over rated or is Miami that good? I am thinking Notre Dame is a bit over rated and Miami is a decent hockey team.

Analysis

Northeastern is a pretty good hockey team and have started the season 5-0-1 with a win against defending national championship Boston College.

Right now Hockey East seems to be the league to beat right now. Hockey East is 15-4-2 (.762) against the big four conferences, breaking it down further; Hockey East is a 7-2-2 against the CCHA and 5-1-0 against the WCHA.

Analysis

A rather light conference schedule in the WCHA last night as Minnesota took 3 out of 4 points from the hapless Badgers, the game wasn't as close as the score and the Badgers gave 5 or more goals for the fifth time in six games. That is unprecedented for Wisconsin, Badgers, a team that prides itself for its self for its air tight defense. The big question is what team is coming to Grand Forks, ND next weekend.

Duluth recorded a tie against UAA in Anchorage. The Seawolves take 3 of 4 points on the weekend.

Analysis

Boston University might be one of the best teams in College hockey right now, while NCAA championships are not won in October the Terriers have been impressive so far. Last night the BU Terriers pounded the Michigan Wolverines 7-2, Billy Sauer gave up 4goals on 19 shots. The Boston University Terriers went an impressive 5/9 on the power play. Up front for the Terriers Super sophomore Colin Wilson had three assists for the game.

The most shocking event of the weekend is that the Clarkson Knights and the Colorado College Tigers played in a weekend series that ended up in two sister kissings in Potsdam, N.Y. I don't know what the hell to make out of that, however, I predict that the Tigers will not be sitting in number one position when the polls come out this week. The Tigers are supposed to be a team that is loaded with offensive talent but have managed to score only 9 goals in 4 games.

Ohio State University shocked the Denver Pioneers in Denver last night 4-3. Super frosh Zac Dalpe scored his third goal of the season. I think the biggest question mark for the Denver Pioneers is in goal. Of the few games that I have seen Marc Cheverie play I have to say that I am not impressed and it probably the WEAK link on the other wise loaded Denver Pioneers.
