Obsession.

 

Being it's Sioux and Gophers week, I figured it was never too early to get this picture posted. Fighting Sioux hockey fans know that Gopher hockey fans are obsessed with anything that is about Fighting Sioux Hockey. We are still debating who is the better player Parise or Vanek. We also can't forget that the Holy Cross game still comes up after six years. I know it's a long time ago but it is still funny. Nothing was more pleasing that watching a bunch of over confident Gopher fans leave the arena in disbelief. My wife informed me yesterday that Scheels is selling Holy Cross shirts. Get them while they are hot.

Of course there are Gophers fans that like to bring up the UNH game but it's still not the same as the Holy Cross game. UNH was a pretty good hockey team, Holy Cross was a sixteen seed.

Not to be out done by Sioux fans, Gopher fans like to bring up this game but this game still brings me much joy as well. A Regional championship > League playoff Championship.

Dirty over at Ditry's Diatribe posted a site that I found pretty comical, the blog post is pretty funny as well. I hope we all remember in the end that this is just a game. We don't need any fights in bars like we had last season. When you get to the point that your ready to start swinging you might have an anger management issue.

Some people really have no life. Apparently Goofs fans love Dave Hakstol as well. This one hasn't gained any steam what so ever.

Leafs in shambles Bozak called up to the Leafs.

The Make Me laughs are a mess, last years top scorer Jason Blake has two points in 5 games, the goaltending can't stop a beach ball. Why not call up former DU star Tyler Bozak? Seriously, I was surprised when they sent him down and he could add some spark to the line up?

[Sun Media] Reeling from their worst start in almost 20 years, the 0-4-1 Leafs called up centre Tyler Bozak from the Marlies, apparently benching forwards Matt Stajan and Niklas Hagman and sitting goalie Vesa Toskala out with a lower body injury.

”Why not?,” coach Ron Wilson said of the high-profile benchings. “We need more from everyone, we’re giving opportunities to younger guys.”

Toskala was shaken up in Monday’s 7-2 loss to the New York Rangers, when teammate Jason Blake crosschecked Ranger forward Ryan Callahan over top of him while he was in the butterfly position. With Joey MacDonald already slated to start after Toskala registered no wins, a 5.56 goals-against average and an .812 save percentage, the Leafs called up James Reimer from the Marlies to back up MacDonald tonight against the Colorado Avalanche. Toskala went for an MRI today, but the problem is not thought to be serious.

The game will also see the return of the Leafs’ top scorer in pre-season, Viktor Stalberg, who suffered a mild concussion a week ago early in the club’s third game after getting one point in two previous starts. He and Bozak live together with forward Christian Hanson, who is also with the Marlies.

“Viktor and I were on different schedules, but I was jealous whenever he went on (an NHL) road trip,” Bozak said.

Bozak received word via text last night he would be called up.

Fighting Sioux hockey beat writer Brad Elliott Schlossman has now posted the numbers for the WCHA refs just in time for the WCHA season. Sweet.

Personally, I was kind of disgusted that the refs have now gone chicken, so the fans no longer know who they are without the roster, because they no longer put their names on the back of their jerseys. I can't be the only on that thinks that was a stupid thing to do? I mean seriously, if the officials are not doing a good job (like usual) there should be a name attached to the product. I suppose the League Commissioner Bruce McLeod believes that it will decrease the complaints against their crappy officials. Not a chance. If you doing a horrible job there should be some ownership connected with the crappy product.

OILERS RECALL TAYLOR CHORNEY

Former Fighting Sioux defenseman Taylor Chorney has been recalled by the Edmonton Oilers. Nice to see Chorney get called up, hopefully he will stick with the Edmonton Oilers this time.

[Official Press Release] General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have recalled defenceman Taylor Chorney from the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League.

Chorney, 22, currently leads the Falcons in scoring (tied with three others) and is third among all AHL defencemen in scoring with five points (2-3-5) in four games.

The Thunder Bay, Ontario native made his National Hockey League debut last season, appearing in two games with the Oilers.

In 68 games with the Falcons, Chorney tallied five goals and 16 assists for 21 points and 22 penalty minutes.

Plan for Big Ten hockey Conference put on ice

This is an article that has cause a stir in the college hockey world for WCHA fans. We all know the CCHA was mad after UNO decided to join the best college hockey conference in College Hockey the WCHA. According to an article written by Badgers hockey beat writer Andy Baggot apparently some in the athletic department leadership at Wisconsin actually entertained the idea of moving to the CCHA. Luckily Eaves a smart man and doesn’t want to switch leagues. Duh!

Seriously, why would anyone move from a league like the WCHA to the CCHA? First: the move to the CCHA would make them a whole lot less money than the WCHA? Do you think CCHA schools get 90,000.00 per team after the Final Four at the Joe? Second; After Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame who would fill the Kohl center like UND, Wisconsin and DU? 15,000 fans aren’t going to come to the Kohl center to watch a team like LSSU or BGSU. I would bet any of my friend in Madison a case of Bud Light on that one. Also, Alvarez should stick to something he knows football.

I think one thing that is driving some of this is nonsense is the Big Ten Network. While I receive BTN on my digital cable package a lot of house holds do not. You have to have an expanded cable package or some kind of satellite television package to receive it. If the Big Ten Network wants to get serious and make money off of the hockey first show more hockey teams and match ups, how about more games of Wisconsin Vs UND, Minnesota Vs UND, Minnesota Vs Denver, Minnesota Vs UND ecetera. Also, if OSH is concerned about not getting any exposure have the BTN come up to Grand Forks, ND during the Thanksgiving Weekend and broadcast a few of the Subway Classic Holiday Tourney games. I am sure UND pasting OSU in a few games would be good for the ratings.

Multiple college hockey sources said UW officials responded to the slowing of the talks by making it known they would consider moving to the CCHA. That league will go from 12 members to 11 in 2010-11 when Nebraska-Omaha defects to the WCHA. Omaha will join Bemidji (Minn.) State to make the WCHA a 12-school conference.

Frazier acknowledged that UW would be a "jewel'' for the CCHA, but he denied such rhetoric, saying, "We're loyal to the WCHA." In an e-mail, CCHA commissioner Tom Anastos said he's had no contact with UW officials about such an idea, but said he'd be interested in the Badgers coming to his league.

Yet the option of moving to the CCHA was certainly broached by UW officials at some point. Asked about the notion, Alvarez said men's coach Mike Eaves wasn't interested in changing leagues.

"If Mike's not interested, I'm not interested,'' Alvarez said. "I'd be interested in other things. As I've said before, regionalizing hockey makes sense.'' [Madison.com]

I believe this is the crux of the arguement right here, it would be harder to qualify for the NCAA tourney if Minnesota or Wisconsin played MSU, Michigan and or Ohio State for 6 games and went 2-4 in non conference play. Taking that line of thinking further: this could also be another reason to kill the Big Ten Hockey Conference, if you put a bunch of top teams like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Michigan State in a league not everyone is going to have a winning record or a strong PWR number. The almight NCAA dollar = NC$$. You don't want to bite the hand that feeds you.

Minnesota and UW currently have annual matchups with Michigan and Michigan State in the College Hockey Showcase, but Ohio State has no consistent access to the two WCHA schools.
"It's something I think we'd like to see accomplished,'' Schneider said of the Big Ten men's hockey league, "but I think we can achieve some of the same goals through a scheduling alliance.''

According to a source, it was proposed that UW and Minnesota devote their six non-conference games to series with Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. The idea was rejected in part because those games would make difficult schedules even more so and make it harder to qualify for the NCAA tournament.

"I think (a new conference) would be nice, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary,'' Schneider said. "It's something we definitely want to continue exploring.''

Talks about a Big Ten men's hockey league have been going on for years, with varying degrees of intensity.

"Where it stands now is that it's still a discussion point,'' Maturi said. "There's nothing imminent.''

UBC to the NCAA?

Actually I have put a great deal of thought into idea and I think that UBC would be a good addition to NCAA Division one Hockey. Why not? I have heard people say that it would cause more competition for recruiting for teams like DU, UND, UMD and Wisconsin. Yeah so what! If anything it would affect teams that recruit more heavily in the BCHL.

Seriously, all these fore mentioned teams have or will have nice facilities and have storied programs that speak for themselves. For my team, I don’t think it would affect UND all that much since the Sioux have a 110 million dollar arena, a storied history and program, seven NCAA titles and a top notch coaching staff. Recently, UND has gotten a majority of their Canadian recruits from the AJHL recently so I am not so sure it would affect our team anyways. I am open to the idea. The more the merrier. Hockey is eventually going to need a regional re-alignment we need more teams in the west.

BC MAY APPLY TO NCAA

Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia was accepted into the NCAA earlier this year, It will compete at the Division II level starting in 2011. Simon Fraser will be the first Canadian college in the NCAA.

The University of British Columbia is exploring the possibility of applying, too. "It's up to our athletic administration to apply," Dragicevic said. "And they want to make sure that everything is in order to apply either this summer or next summer.

"You might see it happen. We have a brand new facility of 6,000 people. They want to pack that place. They want to bring NCAA to UBC for a couple of years and they are just waiting for the right opportunity."

Dragicevic said there has been some interest from conferences who want UBC as a member.

"In one end, it is an exciting time for UBC because of the new facility and potentially having the NCAA down the road," he said,

The Doug Mitchell Sports Center actually seats 5,700. It will be used for women's hockey in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. "It is a world class facility," Dragicevic said. "You will probably hear more news about this in the upcoming months."
UBC has 40,000 students and is a strong academic school.

One thing that would make it difficult for UBC to go Division one hockey would be: the moratorium on "playing-up". UBC would have to play Division II first and currently there are no Divison II hockey teams. It would take at least 5-10 years before there would be any benefit to moving to the NCAA.

Prospective Division I members would be required to spend at least five years as active members of Division II before beginning the five-year reclassification process under a set of recommendations being considered by the Division I Leadership Council The Council also is considering an application fee model, though the exact amount, parameters and eventual uses for the fee have yet to be determined.

The recommendations discussed at the Council’s October 6 meeting in Indianapolis are expected to be part of a full report sent to the Division I Board of Directors after the Council’s January meeting and distributed to the membership for feedback. The proposals are the result of the Council’s year-long study of membership standards. The Board, which declared a membership moratorium in August 2007, directed the Leadership Council to develop standards that will balance the desire to allow access to the division with a need to provide full services and consistent competitive opportunities to its members.

The recommendation that schools spend five years as active Division II members before beginning the reclassification process arose out of comments from Division II, though preliminary recommendations from the Council also would have required that institutions be a member of Division II before applying for Division I membership. No time limits were suggested, though, in the original proposal.

UND to attempt to end RedHawks streak.

True to form; SCSU lost again to the Miami RedHawks last night. Miami has now won six games in a row against WCHA teams. Just for the record the last WCHA team to beat Miami University RedHawks was the Fighting Sioux 3-0 in Lefty McFadden Invitational on October 8th 2005 when Jordan Parise held of a Miami surge and got a shutout against the RedHawks. When Miami plays UND on November 28, 2009 in the Subway Holiday Classic UND has a chance to end the RedHawks streak against Miami. This could prove to be an exciting game with huge PWR implications.

Analysis: DU shows that it’s not unbeatable by losing to the UVM Catamounts. BSU gets revenge on AFA by repaying the favor and sweeps the Falcons 3-1 and 7-3, does anyone want to rehash the CHA > AHA? Go Beavers. Notre Dame beats UAH after the Chargers shocked the college hockey world with a win over the golden boys from Notre Dame the night before. Incidentally, ND is 1-2 in its last three games against CHA teams. Still an impressive showing for UAH Chargers which is sure to have many fans from all over college hockey in their corner this winter, screw the CCHA. UNH loses to EZAC team Rensselaer not impressive at all. WCHA teams went 2-3 last night. The Two Colorado teams and SCSU dropped the ball last night. SCSU was swept by the Miami RedHawks and now have lost three games in a row to the RedHawks.

Dean Blais and the UNO Mavericks win the Icebreaker Championship. The Mavericks beat a good team in UMass Lowell.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha kicked off the Blais era in grand fashion this weekend, winning the Mutual of Omaha Icebreaker with a pair of gutsy victories. The Mavs locked up the tournament title Saturday night with an impressive 4-3 win over UMass Lowell, a team ranked Nos. 10 and 11 in the country and picked to finish second in the heavyweight Hockey East conference. Edit: First off my prediction about UAA being a big slow, untalented, team is coming to fruition as the Seawolves are getting run out of their own building and losing 5-1 to Michigan in the second period. We will see what the final score ends up being. What can I say; same UAA team as the last four seasons, same results. Yeah this team is going to finish in the top four. How?

Series notes:

What can I say about this weekend, the hockey for the most part lacked the emotion of a conference game but the Warriors were a good test for the Fighting Sioux, in preparing them for the regular season. The Merrimack College Warriors have two very good goalies in Joe Cannata and Andrew Braithwaite and both goalie played well this weekend and gave the Fighting Sioux nothing. Merrimack College plays a neutral zone trap and they are very good in their own end and are very smart with the puck. They will give the Hockey East a good fight this season.

Freshman Impress

This past weekend I was very impressed with Danny Kristo, Mike Cichy and Joe Gleason. First off, based on his play this past weekend I don't see how Joe Gleason sits, the kid has earned a spot in the line up because plays very smart hockey, Gleason is an offensive defenseman but he doesn't get carried away and he always keeps the opposition in front of him.

Cichy and Kristo both left a good impression as I thought both were very good with the puck and have great offensive imagination and will score a lot of points before they leave UND.

Is Miami a powerhouse?

On October 27th 2007 Miami Student writer Mike Zoller declared that Miami University hockey ‘was on the Brink of being a dynasty.’ While Miami Hockey is not a dynasty by definition (need to win a few NCAA titles), I am also going to hold off calling them a dynasty for now but Miami does have a good shot at being a title contender this season if they play up to their potential.

Since 2003-2004 the Miami RedHawks have compiled a 144-76-23 record and have made the NCAA tourney five out of the last six seasons. Last spring the RedHawks had the NCAA chapionship in their grasp, the RedHawks made it to the NCAA Championship game, took a 3-1 lead before losing the game in over time to the Boston University Terriers. Incidentally, the last WCHA team to beat Miami University was the Fighting Sioux 3-0 in Lefty McFadden Invitational on October 8th 2005 when Jordan Parise got a shut out against the RedHawks. The Fighting Sioux might have to stop that streak if the Huskies can’t stop them tonight.

Here is what Mike McMahon the hockey beat writer from Merrimack College had to say on last night's game. In my opinion Mike does a pretty good job reporting the news and I enjoy reading his blog.

The score was 5-2, but this game was not out of reach for the Warriors until the very end.

North Dakota scored two early goals but Merrimack battled back with tallies from Chris Barton and Justin Bonitatibus to close the first tied at 2-2.

Getting back in the game the way they did was a promising sign for this team. In years past, down 2-0 early meant that the Warriors would fold and you’d see a 5-1 or 6-0 game. That wasn’t the case on Friday night and shouldn’t be going forward.

Trailing 4-2 entering the third the Warriors needed a big period and came out flat. Merrimack was outshot 17-5 in the third period (40-17 overall); obviously a gap that isn’t going to be a recipe for success.

Three of ND’s five goals came off of rushes or other plays in which Merrimack attacked and was caught coming back the other way. Joe Cannata played a solid game (35 of 40 on shots) and was tested more often than I’d like to see. But, he held his own and, as he did last season, kept his poise and made his saves. Who has egg on their face now?

The big upset win of the night was in South Bend as the UAH Chargers stung the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3-2. This win by the Chargers had me smiling from ear to ear. The CCHA might want to go ahead and reconsider UAH's application for admission since the Chargers just took down one of the top teams in the CCHA. I read a lot of post during the off season where fans were saying UAH doesn’t belong in the CCHA or they can’t compete. Yeah! How do you like the Chargers now?

SOUTH BEND — Alabama-Huntsville coach Danton Cole downplayed the significance, but his Chargers hockey team came to town with something to prove.

Denied admission this summer into the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, UAH exacted some revenge Friday night against the league's defending champions.

Cody Campbell scored a power play goal with five seconds left to give the Chargers a stunning 3-2 upset win over No. 5 Notre Dame in front of a sold-out Joyce Center crowd.

Alabama-Huntsville, looking to join a new league since its current home, the CHA, will disband after this season, found motivation from the summer snub. UAH Goaltender Cameron Talbot told the Huntsville Times earlier in the week, "We want to show we can play with the big dogs of the CCHA."

Sioux 5 - Warriors 2

The Fighting Sioux got a very solid effort from all four lines as the Fighting Sioux beat the Merrimack Warriors 5-2. This was the first time I got to see the new line up live and I was really impressed with the efforts of David Toews 1-1-2, Chay Genoway 0-2-2, Michael Cichy 0-2-2. If last year’s team was well balanced, then I have got to think this year is even more balanced. Team speed wise I think the Sioux are faster with the addition of Cichy, Kristo. David Toews had a really good start tonight.

Also, I hope I am not the only one that is impressed with freshman Joe Gleason, I thought he made a very strong case for staying in the lineup as Joe played a very well with the puck and was smart defensively. Gleason also chipped in with an assist.

I thought the Sioux got sloppy in the offensive end at the end of the first period that led to two untimely goals. It's not good to let the opposition score a goal at the end of a period, it can be a serious momentum killer. The forwards have got to be aware when Chay Genoway pinches in the offensive zone a forward has got to pick up the point. That didn't happen and Eidness let in a goal on a breakaway.

My yard work isn't getting done with me sitting at the computer but there were a few interesting items out there to read about in the hockey world.

Pat Quinned was fined for saying this:

"I don't understand the players of today," Quinn said. "If that had happened in the old days he would have got hit over the head with a stick right after. It was a pretty dirty play in my opinion. He poked his feet out and then piled on top of him. Somehow they never deal with that ... and they won't let the vigilante stuff happen to deal with it. It's disappointing." [NHL.COM]

The Redwings just got some really bad news when one of their top forwards Johan Franzen will be out for at least four months. Looks like former MSU Star Justin Abdelkader will be getting another shot at playing in the NHL.

Bad news on the Johan Franzen injury front: The Red Wings just announced that the big forward will be out a minimum of four months after sustaining a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Thursday’s 3-2 win over Chicago.General manager Ken Holland said the team has recalled Justin Abdelkader from Grand Rapids (AHL).

Predict the score of this game between UAA and Michigan, I am predicting a 7-2 ass whooping. Nothing like a game against Michigan to lower those save percentages and raise the goals against averages.

It will be interesting to see how optimistic some remain after the Seawolves play like a big, slow, untalented, lumbering team, with little recognizable talent. I predict that UAA will get beat to the puck up and down the ice and will get into penalty trouble as soon as the Seawolves realized they can’t keep up more talented and fleet of foot Michigan Wolverines. Being an early season game the ref will be out to prove a point and there will be a parade to the penalty box.

Both of their goalies played in their exhibition win. Jon Olthius got the start and made 7 stops in a little over half the game. Bryce Christianson stopped ten pucks in the second half of the game. Christianson was the better of the two a year ago, with a 2.60/.893 to Olthius's 3.43/.877. [The Blog that Yost Built]

According to the New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella they are not playing rund and gun hockey. Sounds like they need to work on their defense.

John Tortorella wasn’t so thrilled with what he saw on the tape from the Pittsburgh game, or with what he saw on television from one of his players: “The biggest thing that we need to address tonight is puck support. If we’re going to be aggressive as far as defending, trying to jam the neutral zone, pinching in the end zone when we have opportunities, we need to have some support coming back, and I think we lost ourselves a little bit there” - most glaringly on Sidney Crosby’s go-ahead goal, with Marc Staal caught behind the play and no one helping out.

“I even heard one of our players say on a TV program or something like that before last night’s game, ‘Run-and-gun.’ This isn’t run-and-gun,” the coach went on. “This is pressure defense, pressuring the puck, defense first with support, allowing us to be aggressive, it’s not run and gun. These are the things we have to curb and make our team understand, because we gave up too many odd-man rushes. … Some was due to us just blowing up with the puck.” [The Blueshirts blog]

So is Wild forward Benoit Pouliot playing his way out of the line up in Minnesota? I don't know but I hope so, I just don't see anything that leads me to believe that Pouliot is going to be anymore than a fourth line player.

Benoit Pouliot’s got some work to do if he wants more than the five-minutes of fourth-line work he got Tuesday against Anaheim.
“He can play as high as the second line because he has that skill, but he needs to be a reliable player in his own zone and provide some energy and physical play,” Richards said.

Richards was displeased with the goalie interference penalty Pouliot took with the Wild down 3-1 in the third period. Pouliot nullified a power play he had drawn.

“He did a great job moving his feet to draw the penalty and then put himself in a position to take a penalty. You can’t do that,” said Richards. [Russo's Rants]

Cornelius Hardenbergh from the Hockey Blog Adventure was not impressed with the play of the Boston Bruins last night against the Ducks. I DVRed the game but I haven't had the displeasure of watching that game yet and if I do I might just vomit as well. I made the mistake of looking ahead of time on line to see what the score was and 6-1 kind of ruined it for me.

The Bruins powerplay sucked so hard that I was hoping the Bruins would take a penalty just to even the numbers of players on the ice. The PK managed to let old man teemu to bury 2 goals. If Tim Thomas is going to be a sieve every other game maybe the Bruins should look at this promising Rask kid soon. I expect him to play sometime this weekend, but I'm no NHL coach. Holy Cow! What a hit. That was right on the line of being a questionable hit, it probably would be classified as interference because it looks like the puck isn't on Prucha's stick when he gets smoked.

Here is what Mike McMahon had to say about the Sioux in his blog post this morning. Sounds like the Sioux are going to be in for a very physical series this weekend.

Scouting The Sioux
To put it bluntly, North Dakota is an excellent hockey team. They have a lot of team speed that will challenge the Warriors, who will almost certainly utilize a trap in an attempt to bottle it up and shut down a very impressive Sioux offense, which scored an eye-popping 3.40 goals per game last season. Merrimack has been able to do this in the past to speedy teams — they beat UNH on their home sheet (Olympic size) last season — but doing so against an unfamiliar North Dakota team will prove to be a challenge.

Brad Eidsness was impressive in net as a freshman last season (2.56, .906) guiding the Sioux to a WCHA Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. In some UND games I caught on television last season (and watching them in Manchester at the NCAA’s) I was impressed with forward Evan Trupp, who scored 20 points as a sophomore (7-13–20) last season. He’s small (5-8, 164) but shifty and always seemed to be around the net.

As for the Warriors, don’t expect them to try and skate with the Sioux – they can’t – so defense will be a priority. I’d expect to see Merrimack sit back in the neutral zone and wait for their opportunities to attack on offense, sending one forechecker to force the pucks to the walls and create turnovers. The key is that the Warriors will need to capitalize when they get chances, because there might not be very many.

Also, hitting guys tends to slow them down. If MC can force pucks to the walls, they’ll also be able to bang some bodies. I’d expect a very physical, defensive Merrimack team for two games this weekend.

And remember, this is a non-conference games in a WCHA rink. Not as bad as the CCHA, for sure, but expect the Warriors to have to kill somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 penalties in the two games is my guess.

Weekend Match ups (Sioux 7)

The opening weekend games feature non conference games and a tournament. So lets start off with the weekend series first. Three series are against Hockey East teams, Vermont, Northeastern, and Merrimack. There is also one CCHA series, and then the Superior Showcase, with two WCHA and two CCHA teams. These non conference games can give us a good indication of where the league stands as a whole against the other top conference.


St. Cloud State at Miami
The RedHawks of Miami had a great run last year in the playoffs and just came up short of a national title. The question will be, can they do it again this season? The Huskies will be trying to win and show that they are going to a force to be reckoned with this year. I'm betting we will see freshman goalie Mike Lee in net both nights. I see this series being a split, UM on Friday and SCSU on Saturday.


Vermont at Denver
I'm not up to snuff on the Catamounts, but if history can be used, they have been a good competitive team in years past and the fact they are rated #14 to start this season. The Pioneers being ranked #1 will have a big target on them this weekend as they look prove they are deserving of the pole position to start the season. I think conditioning and altitude might factor into UV's game plan, but in the end I think DU will come out on top. I'm picking DU to get a win and tie, this weekend.


Merrimack at North Dakota
The Warriors invade the Ralph this weekend in hopes of pulling of an upset win. UM was picked to finish last in their conference, ouch. Meanwhile the Sioux where picked to finish second in the WCHA and are ranked #6 to start the year. UND has 10 freshman this year in the line up and only 3 seniors, yeah, they are a young team. The Sioux are use to have many youngsters in the line up with the numberous defections to the NHL before the player graduates. I think the Warriors will put up a fight but the skill of the Sioux will win out in the end. SIOUX SWEEP.


Bowling Green at Minnesota State
I'm sure many people didn't realize that Ohio has two hockey teams, but BG has a team. The Falcons haven't had that much success in recent seasons past, but are looking to move up the CCHA standings. If I'm not mistaken they have a new head coach this season, so this could be a little bit of a transition year too. The Mavericks gave their head coach Jutting a contract extentsion, so he will be the bench boss in Mankato for years to come. The Mavericks are always tough team to beat and the Falcons will find that out this weekend. MAVERICKS SWEEP.


Northeastern at Colorado College
The Huskies invade the Tigers home this weekend for a pair of tilts. CC has many questions to answer, goalie and offense are the main ones... Northeastern finshed last season with a 25-12-4 record, pretty darn good in any league. The Tigers will have their hands full with these doggies. But don't count the Tigers out just yet, they have suprised us before. I'm hedging my bet and going to call this a SPLIT.


Superior Showcase

Lake Superior at Minnesota-Duluth
The Lakers take on the Bulldogs since this is a round robin tourney I'm going with Dogs at home over the Lakers.

Northern Michigan at Michigan Tech
This is an old WCHA rivalry, I remember when the Wildcats played in the WHCA. The Huskies are going to have to be on their A-game to get wins this season, and I don't see them starting with a win over their Upper Penisula rivals. Wildcats Win.

Lake Superior at Michigan Tech
I think the Huskies will drop this game by one goal to the Lakers.


Northern Michigan at Minnesota-Duluth
This game is a tough one to call, but hey its only speculation, right...Bulldogs Win.


Kendall Hockey Classic
Mercyhurst at Alaska-Anchorage
The Seawolves are looking to start the season with a win, and to do that they will need to beat the Mercyhurst Lakers from Atlantic Hockey. The Lakers where 8-11-1 away form Erie PA last year, and the Seawolves were 5-8-4 at home last season.
I think the Lakers will handle their first road/airplane trip of the season well and will hand the Seawolves a loss.


Michigan at Alaska-Anchorage
Lets just let this one be. #3 Michigan wins.

A goal worth seeing. (Kyle Okposo)

I am not much of a Islanders fan but this is a really nice goal by former Golden Gopher Kyle Okposo. That is a power forward move. This kid could still be playing in college if he hadn't left 1 1/2 years into his college career.

Check out this scrum at the end of the Flyers and Penguins game. Edit: It was Mike Richards that ran over the Penguins goaltender, now that is a bush league move. I wonder if they league will review this tape.

Update on Warrior's Da Costa.

Here is the latest from Mike McMahon of the Warrior Rink Rat. Looks like Da Costa won't be playing this weekend. That is a tough break for the Warriors.

Stephane Da Costa traveled with the Warriors to Grand Forks on Thursday, but will not participate in either game against North Dakota this weekend while he waits for the NCAA to rule on his eligibility.

It was originally thought that the NCAA would make its ruling this week, however, now one isn’t expected to be handed down until at least next week.

The NCAA has cleared Da Costa to practice, and he has been practicing with the team since they began sessions. He also participated in the Blue-Gold game on Monday. [Warrior Rink Rat]

St Louis Blues turning the corner.

It would appear that the St Louis Blues hockey team is headed in the right direction and should be a force to be reckoned with this season. Personally, I really enjoy watching great young American players like Erik Johnson (UMN) David Backes (MSU-M) and T.J. Oshie ( UND) play hockey.

Fans haven’t been this jacked up since the old President’s Trophy days, when the Blues finished first overall in 1999-2000 and then reached the Final Four the following spring.

Those were heady times. Blues fans believed Bill and Nancy Laurie and their big Wal-Mart dollars would power this franchise to its first Stanley Cup.

But the Lauries lost tens of millions of dollars during their Cup quest. They threw their support behind the NHL lockout, then decided to abandon the team when the league resumed play.

Now Blues fans are hopeful again. They are a bit uneasy about David Checketts’ quest for an NFL team, since his ownership group hasn’t quite finished its job with the Blues.

Otherwise, all is well in Blues Nation. This team commands league-wide respect again. Kariya’s return adds star power to an already entertaining group.

The franchise has developed its best corps group of young players since the Bernie Federko/Brian Sutter days. Johnson is legit, as are David Backes, David Perron, T.J. Oshie, Patrik Berglund and Roman Polak.

If Chris Mason falters in goal, Ty Conklin will be a worthy stand-in. Our Town’s Ben Bishop offers huge long-term potential in the nets and numerous other top prospects are toiling for the team’s AHL affiliate this season.

The hockey operation is in great shape. Good organizational depth extends to the low minor league, junior hockey, the college ranks and Europe. The Blues are good now and they should remain good for many years to come.

The first round bust known as Benoit Pouliot.

In the off season I was very disappointed to find out that the Minnesota Wild had decided to keep their first round bust Benoit Pouliot, instead of finding someone else to take his place on the roster in Minnesota. Drafted in the first round of the 2005 NHL entry draft Pouliot is another reminder of the players selected in 2005 that the Minnesota Wild could have had instead of the dead weight known as Benoit Pouliot (52 games 7g-7a-14pts).

Let’s take a quick look at the players who were drafted behind Beniot Pouliot in the first round of the 2005 entry draft, Anze Kopitar 11th by the LA Kings (81g-128a-209pts), Marc Staal 12th New York (5g-22a-27pts), Tuukka Rask 21 by Toronto and T.J. Oshie 24th by the St Louis Blues, 59 games (14g-26a-40pts). I am sure that Kopitar, Staal, Rask and or Oshie would look a much better in a Wild jersey than the slacker currently wearing number 67. Frankly I find that Pouliot is a brutal reminder of the horrible first round draft choices that now departed Wild General Manager Doug Risebrough made during his ho hum tenure in Minnesota. Another reminder is the first rounds busts as James Sheppard I wonder how much longer we are going to have to watch James taking up a roster spot on the Wild.

A line that Kurt Russell immortalized in the 2004 movie, “Miracle,” and a line that fits perfectly with the crossroads that Benoit Pouliot’s career is at.

Drafted 4th Overall in the 2005 Entry Draft, Pouliot was drafted as the Minnesota Wild’s “Next Big Thing.”

Taken just three spots behind Sidney Crosby and ahead of names like Carey Price, Devin Setoguchi, and Anze Kopitar, Pouliot was expected to give the Wild the scoring punch beside Marian Gaborik that they had needed for so long.

Entering his fourth pro season, Pouliot has yet to live up to those lofty expectations.

In 52 NHL games, he has tallied just 7 goals and 14 points. After an impressive rookie campaign with the

 Houston Aeros in the 2006-07 season, one that saw him tally 19 goals and 36 points as a rookie, Pouliot was expected to contend for a roster spot on the big squad the following season. He was even given the opportunity to play pivot between Gaborik and Pavol Demitra in what would form the team’s top line.

Unfortunately, Pouliot didn’t quite make the cut. He did, however, earn a late season call up that saw him get a couple goals in the last eleven games of the season. [Bleacher Report]

Wild not as boring this season.

I know it's only one game and it was the first Wild game that I have been able to watch this season, however, after only one game I can say that the Wild are going to be a much more exciting brand of hockey to watch then they were last year under the defensive minded former coach Jacques Lemaire.

Personally, I don't watch hockey to see the neutral zone trap, I want to see attacking and counter attacking hockey and that was what the Wild did as they pushed the puck up and down the ice and created offensive opportunities all night.

This season with the Wild playing a more up tempo offensive style of play it will cause a higher risk/reward. There were a few instances last night where the Wild got caught up ice focusing on offense and not remembering where the defensive zone was.

Last night I thought defenseman Brent Burns had a poor game and looked like a pylon as there were numerous times he was caught up ice on turnovers in the neutral and offensive zone. None the less, I liked what I saw last night and it was a lot more exciting hockey to watch and I expect more of the same.

Helluva night in the Twin Cities, eh? I’m not about to compare tonight’s comeback at the X in Game 2 of an 82-game season with the Twins’ finish to win the division and advance to the playoffs, but if you happened to be one of the fans that actually attended this doubleheader, man, you won’t ever forget this night.

Wild down 3-zip. Playing absolutely hideously. Coughing up pucks. Giving up 2-on-1’s and 3-on-2’s and even an astonishing 4-on-1. Getting zero done in the offensive zone.

And then … a couple choice words during the second intermission and a fight, and the first-ever Wild comeback from three goals down in the third for a W.

Yes, I know there are people who hate fights, but tonight, there was an example about what a fight can do to a hockey game.

Kinda like when Stephane Veilleux got goaded into fighting Dion Phaneuf in Calgary once when the Wild was ahead 3-0, George Parros decided to fight John Scott. Well the 6-foot-8 Scott absolutely clocked the experienced fighter with a right uppercut. He went down, and for the first time in the game that wasn’t Carlos Gomez scoring at the Metrodome, the Wild fans had reason to cheer.

And, said Todd Richards, “It stirred up some emotion on the bench.” [Russo's Rants]

Da Costa’s Eligibility In Question

Merrimack collge hockey beat writer Mike McMahon has an update on their star freshman's status for this weekend's games. His status is still in doubt. Sounds like if this kid couldn't play this season it would be tough pill to swallow for Merrimack. I can't even remember the last time I seen someone from France playing in college hockey.

Freshman forward Stephane Da Costa has not made it through NCAA clearninghouse as of Tuesday afternoon.

Coaches poll: Merrimack was picked to finish last for a sixth straight season. The Warriors avoided the Hockey East basement last season, finishing ninth ahead of Providence. The last time the Warriors made the Hockey East playoffs was the 2003-04 season, when the Warriors finished seventh overall and lost to Maine in the first round. The 2004-05 season, the last under former head coach Chris Serino, snapped a streak of nine straight years in which the Warriors made the postseason.

Here is the scouting report on the Merrimack Warriors. This is Mikes words on what the Sioux are going to experience. They sound like your typical WCHA team. Looks like Hexy will have someone to jaw with as well.

They're a big, hard-hitting group - especially some guys on defense. Ryan Flanigan is a pest and sure to be hated by the ND fans quickly. Kyle Bigos (6-5, 240) is a frosh defenseman who was picked by EDM in the draft and is going to be VERY good, I think. He's a big-time physical presence, too.

Here is a preview on the Merrimack College hockey team. Sounds like the Warriors are big, physical, play defense first hockey teams. The Sioux will have to have their head on a swivel and be ready to be hammered into the boards. Also, Sioux forwards are going to need to get their feet moving and get the puck deep to defeat the NZT. Should be a couple of good hockey games this weekend.

EDIT: Just for the record; Merrimack lost 14 games by one goal last season — the most in the nation. So the Sioux cannot over look.

Scott knocks down Parros

Check out former MTU Husky and current Wild goon John Scott as he knocked the snot out of former Princeton star and current Duck goon George Parros. Looks like John Scott is going to do what ever it takes to stay in the line up. This was also the turning point in the hockey game as the Wild came back to win 4-3 in overtime. Mark me down; guilty as charged, I relish a fight. [props]

p.s. I remember working games with John Scott, playing for Michigan Tech, and he was HUGE. I mean, he was a MONSTER. I thought, "If you do anything, I literally will jump on your back." (note: he was pretty gentle back then...it took hanging around Boogaard to turn him into a beast. IALTO).

Sioux 3rd in INCH preseason WCHA poll.

Interesting read. I was wondering where Jess Meyers of INCH was going to pick UND to finish this season. I think the WCHA could be very close race again this season. I also predict that you will see 5 - 6 teams in the NCAA playoffs this season. There is going to be a lot of exciting players in this league this year.

1. Denver The Pioneers have everything in place, talent-wise, to finish on top. They also have the jinx of being the consensus favorite, which means they almost certainly will not.
2. St. Cloud State Add a hot freshman goalie to the likes of Lasch, Roe, and Raboin, and all of the pieces are in place for the Huskies to make another run at the NCAAs.
3. North Dakota After wave upon wave of eye-popping offensive talent coming from the Ralph, the duo of Genoway and Eidsness are prepared to do it with defense this season.
4. Minnesota Gopher players expect to be better. With trips to North Dakota and Wisconsin and a home duo with Denver among the first eight games, we’ll know soon.
5. Wisconsin Goaltending is a question in Madison. Although with the array of blue line talent
wearing red this season, you or I could be competitive in goal there.
6. Minnesota Duluth An exciting crop of freshmen, and an even more exciting run last March, has Bulldog fans expecting home playoffs in the DECC’s final full season.
7. Minnesota State The last two teams we’ve picked for seventh have won the MacNaughton Cup. If the senior-laden Mavs find goaltending, they could make it three.
8. Colorado College The schedule gods are smiling on the Tigers, who play 11 of their first 15 games at home. But the holes to fill on offense and in goal are considerable.
9. Alaska Anchorage A respectable 7-10-3 post-holiday record last season gives Seawolf fans confidence that the days of fading away in February are over.
10. Michigan Tech The duo of Jordan Baker and Brett Olson combined for 50 points last season. Those two, and better team health, provide hope in Huskyland.

Here was something that I agree with Jess about, the WCHA has to be better in non-conference play this season. Last year was not a good season for the WCHA. This season I think the WCHA is going come back with a vengence and kick some non-conference foes ass. It starts this weekend with DU vs UVM, MTU vs NMU, C.C. vs NE, SCSU vs MU, MSU-M vs BGSU, UMD vs LSSU, and UND vs MC. It's time to make a statement.

The 10 (soon to be a dozen) coaches of the WCHA might haven take a moment to look around the Verizon Center in downtown Washington D.C. last April, noticed the dearth of league members there, and realized that we’re a long way from Columbus.

You’ll recall that the 2005 affair in central Ohio was the notorious all-WCHA Frozen Four, which was cheered nearly everywhere west of Jefferson County, Wisconsin, and jeered pretty much everywhere else. In sharp contrast, for just the fourth time in Frozen Four history (1993, 1998 and 1999 being the others) there was no WCHA team at the 2009 Frozen. Although the strongest league backers will claim future member Bemidji State’s run to D.C. ought to count. Not likely.

But the 2008-09 doldrums went beyond a rough patch in rounds one and two of the NCAA playoffs. As evidenced by the fact that just one WCHAer (league MVP Jamie McBain from Wisconsin) made the list of Hobey finalists, and the fact that for the second year in a row the MacNaughton Cup champion (this time, North Dakota) ended the season on a 0-3 streak. It was clearly a down year for the WCHA.

Bruins resign Lucic to three year deal.

The Boston Bruins have resigned their tough guy Milan Lucic. Since his arrival in Boston Milan Lucic has developed a cult following with his monster hits and great fights. Last week he brutalized Jay Harrison from the Carolina Hurricanes. I am sure Bruins fans are relieved that Lucic has been locked up for three more seasons after this one. Just off the wire: According to TSN Lucic According to TSN, the deal is worth $12.25 million, giving Lucic a $4,083,333 annual cap hit. Lucic will still be a restricted free agent at the end of the contract. [TSN]

BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed forward Milan Lucic to a three-year contract extension through the 2012-13 NHL season. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

The 21-year-old Lucic set career highs in all major statistical categories last year after recording 17 goals and 25 assists for 42 points, in addition to tallying 136 penalty minutes and a +17 rating. He netted his first career hat trick and a career-best four points on October 25, 2008, after a 3-1=4 performance against the Atlanta Thrashers.

During the 2008-09 postseason, the 6'3'' 228-pound winger had three goals and six assists and a team best +12 plus/minus rating in 10 games.

In his rookie year in 2007-08, Lucic registered 8-19=27 totals and 89 penalty minutes in 77 contests. Lucic earned the team's "Seventh Player Award" for his efforts, an award voted on by the fans and given to the Bruin who performs above and beyond expectations. He also contributed two goals in seven postseason games.

Lucic has skated in both games during the 2009-10 season and has notched one assist and five penalty minutes.

Matt Gilroy scores his first NHL goal.

Former BU Terrier star defenseman Matt Gilroy scored the first NHL goal of his young career last night as the Rangers beat the Devils 3-2. In my opinion this is a nice story and I hope this kid does really well for the Rangers. Assiting on Gilroy's first goal was former Wild player Marian Gaborik. Former Fighting Sioux forward Travis Zajac scored for the New Jersey Devils, Parise and Clarkson assisted on Zajac's goal.

Genoway makes CHN's first team.

Some nice gee whiz reading for Sioux fans. Chay Genoway is getting some serious love from the college hockey sites. Here is the preseason first team from CHN. Chay was also made the first team of the Inside College Hockey 2009-10 Preseason All-America Team. One might have to start the Hobey Chay campaign.

DU's Anthony Maiani suspended.

Seems that DU hockey team is going to be short in the line up for the next three games as Anthony Maiani has gotten himself into disciplinary trouble, it would be interesting to see what this undisclosed team rule was? I am sure Mr. Maiani wasn't out raising hell, that stuff never happens in Denver.

Junior wing Anthony Maiani, who led the team in scoring last season, will begin a three-game suspension in today's exhibition game against the University of Calgary. Maiani broke an undisclosed team rule and also will miss next weekend's season-opening, two-game nonconference series against visiting Vermont.

Maiani led DU with 30 assists and 41 points as a sophomore. He is practicing with the team but not skating on a regular line.

"It's going to be tough sitting out, watching the team play," Maiani said. "I'm just working hard in practice and being supportive of the team. I'll be ready when I get back in the lineup." [Denver Post]

A couple of things. (Monday Links)

Here was an article that I thought was interesting UAA is one of the bigger teams in the WCHA as well as the NCAA. That's fine and dandy if the Seawolves can skate and keep up the opposition without clutching, grabbing and interfering up and down the ice. The NCAA refs are going to focus on protecting the puck carrier and did so quite well last night during the game between Manitoba and UND. If they call the games like that I don’t know if UAA will be able to keep up with fleet footed teams like DU, UND and Minnesota. If the Seawolves end up taking a bunch of penalties against these teams could get buried.

While some want to make outlandish predictions about the Seawolves finishing in the top five of the WCHA, I just don’t see it happening. To the UAA Seawolves; I beg you to prove me wrong. Personally, I think it’s going to be more of the same and predict that the Seawolves will be a big, slow, lumbering team with mediocre goaltending that will end up 9th or 10th in the WCHA yet again this season.

With no shortage of small, dangerous forwards dancing around the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, UAA has hit upon a tactic aimed to squash such skill: Knock the shiftiness out of them.

"If we play physical and finish our checks, it wears teams down and they get tired and make mistakes,'' said Seawolves coach Dave Shyiak. "As a staff we demand our guys finish their checks and play physical.''

Toward that end, Shyiak and company have assembled a roster that embraces the notion size matters and bigger is better. Goalies aside, the Seawolves average 6-foot-1 and 192 pounds, which means it will be rare for them to come across a bigger opponent.

Shyiak, in his fifth season, has recruited size to counter the skilled players that traditional league powers like Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Denver routinely attract.

"You're looking for talent and skating, and size is always a bonus,'' he said. "We're fortunate with being able to find guys who have good size and can still get around the ice. We're strong along the wall and that really levels the playing field against more skilled teams.''

UAA last season went 14-17-5 overall and finished ninth in the 10-team WCHA with a 9-14-5 record in league. That marked an improvement over the previous season, in which they went 7-21-8 overall and 8-19-1 for last place in the league, and the Seawolves flourished most when they banged bodies consistently. I like how good Brad Eidsness was down the stretch for the Sioux ... especially with how shaky the goaltending was early in the season. If he plays well, the Sioux can compete for a top spot. Oh yeah, and Chay Genoway is a stud.

Plus, the Sioux need to find out if goalie Brad Eidsness is more like his first three-quarters of the season, or more like the guy who (didn't) show up in the postseason. They should be decent on the blue line, with senior Chay Genoway a possible top-10 Hobey candidate. Watch out for sophomore forwards Jason Gregoire and Brett Hextall, too. They quietly had really good freshman seasons.

I have to admit that I miss former Fighting Sioux coach Dean Blais and will enjoy seeing how his team progresses this season. There will be the interesting quotes/zingers in the paper. There was an old song by Cinderella, "You don't know what you got till it's gone." [props] to RWD for pointing that out for me. I also must admit that I saw them in concert at the Boston Garden with ACDC in 1990.

Dean Blais' approach to the UNO hockey team's season-opening exhibition against Lethbridge is simple.

The Mavs' new bench boss sees it as part tuneup and part tryout.

The puck drops on a new chapter in University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey history tonight, when Blais, the two-time NCAA championship coach, makes his Mavericks debut.

The game won't count a lick for NCAA purposes. But it will mean a lot to Blais, who wants to see his players set an aggressive tone for the season. And he expects every person who sets foot inside Qwest Center Omaha to be impressed with his skaters' tireless work ethic.

“It's a dress rehearsal, although the guys, when they put those jerseys on, they're competing for jobs,” said Blais, who was the leader among active NCAA coaches in winning percentage when he stepped down at the University of North Dakota in 2004.

“This community and our fans aren't going to tolerate half (hearted) effort, and we're not going to give it to them. If a kid even takes one shift off, he won't get another one.”

Of course, in addition to sizing up his roster, Blais wants UNO to win.

Rumor: Toronto buyers moving Thrashers to Winnipeg

Here is a rumor that I really hope someday comes to fruition. Moving a team back to Winnipeg makes sense, I mean seriously, since the Phoenix Coyotes have been an utter failure in the desert. I am also not a big fan of having two NHL teams in Florida and on in Atlanta as well. Hockey is a sport that belongs in cold weather markets like Winnipeg. I can remember going to a few games in the old Winnipeg Arena when the Mercury was well below zero on both scales (Celsius and Fahrenheit)

Someone please remind me why that was such a great move? Every since the Jets left Winnipeg in the 1996 I have hoped that someday the NHL will return to Winnipeg 140 miles from my home in Grand Forks, ND. Of Course the Atlanta Trasher are denying the rumor.

There was more NHL/Winnipeg speculation on Saturday night's Hockey Night in Canada's Satellite Hotstove.

On the season's opening weekend, the captivated nation was told that big money from Toronto has done plenty of work already to buy the Atlanta Thrashers and move them to Winnipeg. Is it just another episode of wishful thinking or a real indicator of what's afoot?

True North Sports and Entertainment chairman Mark Chipman wasn't saying on Sunday, taking his usual tack of the less said the better. There are several known quantities to this ongoing story:

* The NHL has more problems than just the financially drowning Phoenix Coyotes.

* Chipman, whose company owns Winnipeg's MTS Centre, has been a consistently keen observer of NHL

franchise matters for longer than his arena has been open (2004) and has never denied his interest in some future deal that might bring the NHL back to the city.

* One of the biggest partners in the True North success story, and certainly its most well-heeled, is Osmington, Inc., the Toronto-based private real estate company of David Thomson, the richest man in Canada and son of the late Ken Thomson.

* Chipman and True North have been to NHL headquarters in New York to address league executives and governors about their new arena, their situation and their interest and they continue to maintain a very quiet but open channel for dialogue with the league's leadership.

* In this case of Saturday's HNIC outburst, the Thrashers' owners, the Spirit group of eight partners, have been embroiled in disputes and legal wrangling for about four years over control of the NHL team, the NBA Hawks and Philips Arena. This summer, a judge tossed out a lawsuit that sent the bickering partners back to the starting blocks over share valuation and how one side or the other could be bought out. It's thought that the group is far more interested in basketball and could sell the Thrashers, but that's only speculation. [Winnipeg Free Press]
