It's here Sioux and Gophers week.

This is the game on the calender that most of us put a mark next to and get fired up for. The "Brown and Yellow" Rodents and their fans are coming to town. Here is a break down of how the games have gone the last five seasons.

2008-2009 Sioux 2-0
2007-2008 Sioux 2-1-1
2006-2007 Sioux 3-1
2005-2006 Goofs 3-1
2004-2005 Sioux 3-1

The Sioux have a 11-6-1 the last 18 games against the Golden Rodents.

BallHype: hype it up!

  2. I forgot, how many times have the flirting Sioux beaten the Ggophers in the NCAA finals this century?

ZERO. The flirting Sioux have not been there and the Gophers beat other teams when they won TWO National Titles during the last 7 years!

  3. Charlie, good job trying to cherry pick some statistics but the Sioux have been to the NCAA finals this century. Might want to check your facts. They won it all in 2000 and in 2005 they lost to Denver after beating the Gophers to make the finals.

On top of that the two teams have played in the NCAA tourney at least twice (too lazy to check actual amount of times they have played but I think it is two) this century and the Sioux have won both.

    Lastly 7>5 and Holy Cross.

    Thanks for trying.

  4. Charlie, definately fell into the trap.. And is having to take his fingers out of his mouth, after typing it up BOLD STYLE. lol

The gophers have been slowly crumbling after they ran out of Potulny's and North Dakota kids to come play on their team..

Unfortunate, but nothings been golden as of late.. Is your coach still on the hot seat??

  5. You are right. I'm an idiot. ...I thought I knew what I was talking about. Don't think I'll forget it again! Thanks!

  6. Closed Circuit to Seejowski: 2000 is the last year of the previous century.

I wonder if UNH has ever tied a game with Holy Cross in the frozen four with less than a second to play and gone on to win? Anybody know? I bet they have only done that 'less than a second' thing once...

  7. Glad everyone is getting fired up for this weekends games.

  8. To BrettB: Trap? What trap? Help me out here.

Regarding things being golden lately, you are right (great minds thinking alike here); it is a shame that so many of the good Minnesota high school kids (Erik Johnson for example) are so gifted that they only play on the Gophers for a year or two before they thrive in the professional ranks. It's quite a compliment.

  9. Charlie, 2000 being the last year of a previous century is opinion, not a fact. It depends on how you look at things. My opinion differs from yours obviously. I think the fact that most people would say "the nineties" or "the eighties" when referring to decades instead of "the nineties plus 2000 but minus 1990" shows that most people would agree with me.

Are you telling me you are one of those people who didn't celebrate the millenium on Dec 31, 1999 but instead waited until Dec. 31, 2000?

If you want to rip UND for blowing their lead in the loss to UNH just reference that game specifically next time. No need to come up with the weird UNH, Holy Cross scenario.

Yes the UNH game stung a lot for Sioux fans, but I don't think it was on the same level as the Holy Cross upset of the Gophers. That game was arguably one of the biggest upsets in college hockey's history.

While I hate to pile on the Gophers for losing that game, because it could happen to UND or any other team any given year (parity is growing in college hockey, look at last year's NCAA with all the upsets), I just love thinking about the fact that the Gophers most embarassing loss ever came in front of 11,000 Sioux fans cheering for Holy Cross in the REA.

  10. Seejawski: Actually, the century tidbit I shared with you is a fact. It is, as you allude to, widely misunderstood; which is exactly why the masses celebrated the new millennium when they did.

On another note,I appreciate your confidence in your ability to convince me to write in a certain manner. With all due respect, I will continue to write in the style I prefer.

I understand your enjoyment of the Holy Cross game and due to the grand total of zero NCAA championships under Hakstol, it has to be a highlight.

  11. Charlie you cannot seriously still be bragging about national championships when your school still hasn't won as many as UND. If you keep arguing about national championships, Sioux fans will (for at least 2 more years, and most likely more than that) have the ultimate trump card... 7>5

As far as coaches, Woog never won a single NCAA title and he hung around in Minnesota for about 13 years. And it has been exactly 5 years since Lucia won one. Wow same as Hakstol, geez they suck.

Also since the Potulnys and Irmen graduated (ND boys Brett was referring to), I don't think there have been that many Minnesota high school kids who have played at U of M for one or two years then thrived in NHL, as you say there have been. I would say Erik Johnson and Okposo but Okposo basically got yanked by the Islanders because they didn't like his development at the U of M, not something to brag about. Kessel was from Wisco, Wheeler played 3 years, as did Goligoski. Schroeder will probably leave after this year but I don't know if he will thrive in the NHL.

I am sure, not being a Gopher historian, that I may have missed someone and this is basically a pointless argument, but I just thought your comment was a little exagerrated.

Lastly since you are so concerned with decades, did you know that U of M never won a title in the 50's 60's 80's, or 90's? By contrast the Sioux have only went without a title in the 70's (Using my definition of a decade of course).

Maybe that's why we are patient with Hak, we know UND is gonna get one soon, they always do.

I am not bragging, heck, I never played on the team; merely pointing out some recent history.

Color me confused, but how could Lucia and The Birdman have won in the same year?

Also since the Potulnys and Irmen graduated (ND boys Brett was referring to), I don't think there have been that many Minnesota high school kids who have played at U of M for one or two years then thrived in NHL, as you say there have been.

I did not refer to a particular number.

I would say Erik Johnson and Okposo but Okposo basically got yanked by the Islanders because they didn't like his development at the U of M, not something to brag about.

Snow has really done well with the Islanders hasn't he? I mean it is just one insaneyy outstanding decision after another over there!

Kessel was from Wisco, Wheeler played 3 years, as did Goligoski.

...Don't bring up Wheeler and Goligoski; nothing makes my blood boil more than those slow to develop bastards.
Schroeder will probably leave after this year but I don't know if he will thrive in the NHL.

Your assumption about my fascination with decades is misplaced. However, I see I do not have a monopoly on cherry-picking.

Maybe that's why we are patient with Hak, we know UND is gonna get one soon, they always do.

I get it; because something happened in the past it can therefore be counted on to happen in the future. Interesting.

  13. "Color me confused, but how could Lucia and The Birdman have won in the same year?"

"Confused" is not a color and who is "The Birdman?" I know there is a Birdman rapper but I don't think he plays hockey.

"...Don't bring up Wheeler and Goligoski; nothing makes my blood boil more than those slow to develop bastards."

You said 1 or 2 years, not my fault you didn't say 3 years. Also were they really born out of wedlock?

"Your assumption about my fascination with decades is misplaced. However, I see I do not have a monopoly on cherry-picking."

I guess it is an oligopoly then?

"I get it; because something happened in the past it can therefore be counted on to happen in the future. Interesting."

Glad you get it now. Maybe there is hope for you yet.

That was fun. You want to be an adult now? Or keep playing these games?

I didn't want to start any kind of fight here, I just called you out on some bogus statements you made about UND and then added a cheapshot to match the one you threw out. You apologized and it was cool, but then you kept posting. It has now turned into this, and I am done with it.

I call truce. If you want to accept it we can talk hockey using real team names and real coach/player names. We can use numbers, trends, even our own biases and state what we think will happen without using cheapshots (I can only speak for myself in that department, that said I will retaliate if provoked).

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sure. ...But I would have thought an adult would have corrected my facts and moved on without revisiting his/her childhood by bringing up Holy Cross! :)

  18. i believe hakstol was with the team when they won their last nc. not the head coach at the time, but still a member of the leadership.

spinning stats is weak. two people can take the exact same collection of data and evaluate them to their advantage, thereby supporting two conflicting claims with the same data set.

we all know there are three stats that really matter in the hearts and minds of sioux and gopher fans alike. these stats represent the real goals of each season. in seasonal chronological order, they are:

    1. wcha regular season championships
    2. wcha tournament championships
    3. national championships

if somebody is up to the task, go ahead and post those three totals for each team and i'm confident in my guess at who will prove to be the most truly accomplished team not only between the two teams involved.

all other stats, such as who won the most saturday games in the eastern time zone between november 1986 and october 1994, prove nothing.
