Friday Links – it’s the playoffs…

Fighting Sioux Defenseman Ben Blood said that, "the playoffs are the best time of year, you play get to end other team's seasons."  No truer words have been spoken.

For the coaches, players and the fans it's also a time of finality. Magical seasons are ended; tickets to the Frozen Four are punched, while others teams dreams are broken, hockey careers come to an end and life moves on.

There is the sweet taste of victory and the agony of defeat.

Here are some links of interest around the world of college hockey.

Brian Gomez from the Colorado Springs Gazette, seems to be a little befuddled that Rylan Schwartz wasn’t picked for any of the WCHA teams.  [Eye of the Tigers]

To be honest with  you Brian, one could make that argument for quite a few players that were left off of the ballets. In my opinion, there are two guys from UND (Danny Kristo, Corbin Knight) that also deserved to be on one of the All-WCHA teams, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. I sure any of these players would trade in their spot on a All-WCHA team for an NCAA title.

Roman Augustoviz from the Red Star and Sickle breaks down this weekend’s playoff series. Looks like Roman is predicting a bunch of three games series with no shockers. [Roman Empire]

Running with the Dog's favorite beat writer, Brad Eliot Schlossman has some good reading for this weekend’s series against the BSU Beavers. UND men's hockey: Coming a long way and Bemidji brings quiet confidence.

Not to be confused with the Pseudo Reporter Patrick C. Miller - Pat Miller from the Bemidji Pioneer, has a story from the Bemidji Beavers point of view. [Bemidji Pioneer]

Rob White from the Omaha World Herald has this to say about UNO and their playoff series against the SCSU Huskies… Mavs hope for better puck luck

Where is Michael Chambers when you need him? Adam Dater has a story on Sam Brittain. University of Denver goalie Sam Brittain is more than happy to share the load...  [Denver Post]

Over on the WCHA blog at USCHO; Tyler Buckentine and Brian Halverson are predicting a UND sweep. [USCHO.COM]

Speaking of Running with the Dogs, she has her picks for the first annual Blogger Awards up on her blog, so you can discuss her picks with her over on this link to her site.

Ben Hanowski's Beard

Wow!!! This video is really funny... Stick Tap to Rachel Lenzi, she had this on her daily internet newspaper, the Rachel Lenzi Daily. I mean seriously, check out Saint Cloud State forward Ben Hanowski's playoff beard, you could have animals living in that thing and he might not ever know it.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

Here we are, the regular season has ended and we begin the WCHA playoffs. Congratulations to the Gophers, who captured their 12th WCHA regular season title by beating their arch-rival, the Badgers, on Saturday night. The Bulldogs fell just a little short of a fourth league title and will have to settle for second this year. However, this weekend starts a new season for everyone, now it's do or do not, win two move on, lose two and your playoff season is over (for most teams).

Let’s look back at last year and compare it to this season. This year it took 28pts go get home ice and last year it also took 28 points to get home ice. Last year CC finished in 6th place with an even record too, 13-13-2, very similar to SCSU record of 12-12-4 this year. Both this year and last the 2nd place team had 37 points, and 3rd place had 36 points. It is funny how some things seem to stay the same.

(#’s are current Pair Wise Rankings)

Michigan Tech @ #19 Colorado College
(season series - CC wins 2-0)

Last weekend these teams played each other with the Tigers sweeping the Huskies in Colorado Springs, 5-2 and 2-0.

With the sweep last weekend the Tigers improved their home record to 11-5-2 this season. The Huskies fell to 5-10-2 on the road last weekend in Colorado Springs. This series should be a tough fought one. It is hard to sweep the same team back to back weekends, and I don’t think it is going to happen. MTU has fought to hard this season to let it end on a four game losing skid to the same team. The Huskies need to score first in these games to take the crowd out of the equation. Also that will allow MTU to dictate the pace of the game. In the end, I think the Tigers will prevail, but it won’t be easy. TIGERS IN 3

Nebraska-Omaha @ #25 St. Cloud State

(season series - UNO wins 1-0-1)

Last weekend the UNO Mavericks were swept by the Pioneers in Omaha and the Huskies took three points from the Bulldogs in St. Cloud.

These teams met back in late November in Omaha with the Mavericks winning the opener 4-3 and tying in the Saturday rematch, 2-2. The Huskies are heating up at the right time. SCSU is 3-1-1 in their last five and are 5-2-1 in their last eight. The Mavericks have been doing the opposite, they have cooled down, and you might say they have even gone cold. Their losses last weekend cost them home ice and now they hit the road. UNO has now hit a season worst four game losing streak, and have been reeling, going 2-8-1 over their last eleven games. The Mavericks have not swept anybody on the road this season, they closest they came was taking three points from BSU in November. The Mavericks might take a game from the Huskies at the National Hockey Center, but I don’t think they will make it to St. Paul. HUSKIES SWEEP

Alaska-Anchorage @ #6t Minnesota
(season series - UM wins 2-0)

Last weekend the Seawolves were swept by the Beavers in Anchorage and the Gophers split with the Badgers in Minneapolis.

These teams met in Minneapolis back at the end of October, with the Gophers winning 5-0 in the opener and 3-1 in the finale. And I’m sure most everyone remembers what happened a year ago with the Gophers hosted the Seawolves in the first round, UAA swept them at Mariucci, 4-3 and 2-0. Since last year, these teams have changed significantly, the Gophers are much better than they were last year. The Seawolves have dropped off some since last season. I can’t recall the top seed in the WCHA losing the first round playoff series to the bottom team. On paper this should be a pair of slaughters, but you still have to play the games. I don’t think the Gophers will be over looking UAA this time around. GOPHERS SWEEP

Minnesota State @ #2t Minnesota-Duluth
(season series - UMD wins 3-0-1)

Last weekend the Mavericks were swept by the Sioux in Grand Forks and the Bulldogs got a point from the SCSU Huskies in St. Cloud.

These teams first played back in mid November in Duluth with the Bulldogs sweeping the games by scores of 5-2 and 7-3. They just played in three weeks ago in Mankato, with UMD winning Friday night 4-2 and then tying Saturday night 4-4. It is fairly obvious that the Mavericks need to hold the Bulldogs to less than four goals a game, if they want to make some noise in the post season. The Mavericks are 6-12-0 away from Mankato this year and the Bulldogs are 12-5-1 in Duluth this year. MSUM has their work cut out for them this weekend, but if they can clamp down defensively and get some timely saves they could make a series out of it. In the end, UMD just has to much fire power up front and the Mavericks cannot stymie them forever. BULLDOGS SWEEP

Bemidji State @ #13 North Dakota
(season series - UND wins 2-0)

Last weekend the Beavers swept the Seawolves in Anchorage and the Sioux swept the MSUM Mavericks in Grand Forks

Edit: These teams split in Bemidji, back in November, with UND winning the first game of the series 5-2 and Bemidji winning the second game 1-0. The Sioux are heating up late in the season they are 8-2-1 in their last eleven games. The Beavers snapped out of four game losing streak by sweeping the Seawolves last weekend. With those pair of wins BSU improved their road record to 6-10-2, meanwhile UND in 14-4-3 in Grand Forks this season. The Beavers need to play some solid defense in front of their net minder, if they hope to extend their season. UND just needs to play their up tempo game style and stay out of the penalty box, in order to prevail this weekend. The Sioux are heating up and that doesn’t bode well for the Beavers. SIOUX SWEEP

Wisconsin @ #11 Denver
(season series - CC wins 2-0)

Last weekend the Badgers split with the Gophers and the Pioneers swept the UNO Mavericks in Omaha.

These teams just played three weeks ago in Madison with the Pioneers winning on Friday 3-0 and the Badgers taking Saturday’s game 5-2. The Pioneers are 12-5-2 at Magness Arena and the Badgers are 4-9-1 away from the Kohl Center. The Badgers just had their four game winning streak snapped on Saturday night, but going 4-1-0 over their last five is a good sign for cardinal and white fans. The Pioneers have won three in a row and six of their last eight games, with the loses to UW and UND. DU was the pre-season favorite to win the league, and as of late they are looking like the team everyone was expecting. UW is playing with a lot of confidence right now and will give DU all they can handle and then some in this series. However, DU has some of the best top end talent in their forwards, which will be the difference maker in this series. PIONEERS IN 3

UND and Wisconsin to keep playing each other in hockey - unless UND keeps Fighting Sioux Nickname

University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux athl...
Image via Wikipedia
Chuck Schwartz from Bucky's 5th Quarter is reporting that University of North Dakota will continue to play University of Wisconsin if the Nickname debacle is settled by the 2014-2015 season. I have no reason to doubt this information because Chuck is a reliable source of information.
Chuck Schwartz, Bucky's 5th Quarter ---  Wisconsin also has a scheduling agreement to play North Dakota when the teams split from the WCHA. The teams would not play in the first year of the new conferences. The four year agreement between the schools would start for the 2014-15 season, with rotating series between Madison and Grand Forks every other year.

The agreement with North Dakota currently hinges on the status of their Fighting Sioux nickname. The school resumed using the nickname recently, which once again puts them in hot water with the NCAA. Wisconsin, along with many other schools won't play North Dakota unless they retire the nickname.

Assuming North Dakota works out their nickname issues, it seems likely that the Badgers will continue to play Denver and North Dakota one series per year for the foreseeable future

WCHA Player of the Year – Jack Connolly Minnesota Duluth, I think he is the best players in the WCHA.

WCHA Defensive Player of the Year – Justin Schultz Wisconsin, hands down one of the best offensive talents in the WCHA. Oh yeah and he is a defenseman. Also, one of the most prolific offensive defensemen that I have seen for a very long time.

WCHA Rookie of the Year – Kyle Rau, Minnesota, Roco Grimaldi was hurt so we will never get to find out how these two great players would have stacked up against each other.

WCHA Coach of the YearDave Hakstol, University of North Dakota, I think with all of the "adversity" that coach Hakstol's team has faced (Defections, season ending injuries), I think that Hakstol has done some of his best coaching this season.

*WCHA Goaltender of the Year  – Kent Patterson, Minnesota, I don't think that this selection needs a lot of narration.

Fighting Sioux nickname supporters tell ND Supreme Court that 1969 ceremony precludes ‘civil interference’

Here is the latest news in the on-going nickname debate. Here is the link to the brief that the Committee for Understanding and Respect file in court. [Click to view]
Chuck Haga, Grand Forks Herald ---The issue before the North Dakota Supreme Court “involves more than choosing between the Legislature and the State Board of Higher Education and its powers to keep or retire the ‘Fighting Sioux’ name,” defenders of the nickname argue in a brief filed with the court late Tuesday.

Because elders of the Standing Rock and Spirit Lake Sioux tribes “gave the name ‘Fighting Sioux’ to UND in 1969 in the context of a Sioux religious ceremony,” the two tribes “must be joined as indispensable parties” under state rules of civil procedure, according to the brief filed late Tuesday by attorneys representing Spirit Lake’s pro-nickname Committee for Understanding and Respect.

They argue that “the 1969 sacred Sioux ceremony giving the Fighting Sioux name to the University of North Dakota constitutes a religious function preventing civil interference,” and that it — along with Spirit Lake’s 2009 vote and council action favoring the nickname’s use — meets the NCAA’s requirement that UND obtain authorization from the two namesake tribes. The filing is in response to Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem’s request to the court for a declaration that the nickname law adopted by the Legislature last spring is unconstitutional and that a prospective referral of the November repeal of that law be kept off the June primary election ballot.

Maybe this is not a bad thing

After reading this article, I have come to the conclusion that maybe losing Stefan Matteau to the CHL isn’t a bad thing.
Future Considerations --- Stefan Matteau has gotten himself in trouble again.

Matteau, who has been suspended for a combined 15 games on two separate incidents with the United States National Team Development Program, accumulated 21 penalty minutes in Thursday’s loss to the Green Bay Gamblers.

Matteau speared a Green Bay player and received a spearing major and a game misconduct with less than a minute remaining in the second period. No Gambler player received a penalty on the incident. According to OHL Central Scouting’s Matt Moran, Matteau earned the spearing call after battling with a Green Bay defender and lifting his stick up between the defender’s legs twice. Matteau’s other six penalty minutes came prior to the ejection on non-related minors.

Last night was just Matteau’s second USHL game back after receiving a seven game suspension after an end of the game incident against Cedar Rapids on Dec. 16. Matteau received slashing and cross-checking majors as well as a gross misconduct for hitting a linesman that was attempting to break up the altercation. Matteau totaled 40 penalty minutes for the end of the game episode. The USHL later reduced the suspension by one game in January.

Dennis Seidenberg vs. Colby Armstrong (Video)

This is another perfect example of why the National Hockey League needs to "not" ban fighting. First you have a punk like Toronto Maple Leafs forward Colby Armstrong, who has a history of being one of those players that plays on the edge and takes liberties on other teams star players.

If you think that I am kidding go over to Youtube you will see that he has a hit parade of high questionable hits on opposition players. [Example 1], [Example 2], [Example 3], [Example 4]... You can see a pattern here, always high, targets the head.

So fast forward to tonight, Armstrong hits Dennis Seidenberg a who is a European hockey player, that doesn't have a reputation of being a dirty player, and is not known for being a fighter, with a questionable hit, while Seidenberg is in a vulnerable position.

Armstrong is lucky that Seidenberg stepped in and that he didn't get beat up by Boston Bruins defenseman/bruiser Adam McQuaid, that would have been ugly...Per the hockey code the players settled this matter on the ice and there is no need to wait for the league office to act.

Another Nice hockey story...

This is a nice story that someone sent me in a email today. I thought it was worth reading, it's a nice story.

It's also, proof there are good parents teaching their kids life lessons as well.

My son plays on the Bantam A hockey team in East Grand Forks (one of his teammates is the younger brother of current NTDP U-17 team member and future Denver recruit Gage Ausmus). They battled through the MN State Bantam qualifying tournament in St. Cloud this past weekend. One of the highlights of the grueling weekend was the fact that not only was my son’s team in the tournament, but the East Grand Forks Bantam B team had also made it into the qualifying

tournament and managed to play at the same time in the rink next door every game all weekend long. Sunday evening was the final game for both teams – if they lost they were done for the season, and if they won they were going on to State.

The A team played a good game but didn’t have too much trouble, winning 3-0. The B team on the other hand, fought a very tough battle, taking a 3-3 tie into first one overtime, then a second. Late in the period the action was in the opponent’s zone, and the other team managed to incur a minor penalty – tripping I believe. The ref threw up his arm, signaling the delayed penalty, but before the other team could regain possession the puck was put into the crease area and a desperate scramble ensued.

The next thing we knew, the ref was signaling another infraction, this time with arms crossed and then pointing to center ice. PENALTY SHOT for our boys, called for covering the puck in the crease! Nerves were on fire as the young men – goalie and forward – lined up for the shot. The arena erupted in cheers when a deke was stopped by a good pad save, and overtime continued. The atmosphere was electric, and finally the East Grand Forks team got a solid shot during the power play and scored the game winning goal.

The winning team’s bench emptied in a wave of exuberance, as they always do in these kinds of games. We’ve all seen it a hundred times – the champions hog-pile each other while the other team collapses in sullen defeat. This was no exception, and the teams played their roles as they were supposed to do. The losing goalie lay face down in his crease, overcome with sadness. I watched from ice level in the corner of the rink, only a few feet from the distraught young man. As the winning team celebrated, their goalie separated himself from the pack and skated over to the other netminder. He gently patted him on the shoulder and helped the other player to his feet. The two shared a few words – I couldn’t hear anything over the noise but the emotions and message were clear: you played your heart out; you were a worthy opponent; keep your head up because you have nothing to be ashamed of. Instead of savoring the win, the victor shared the spoils as best he could, choosing to lift the spirits of his foe as best he could. Not because he was told to, or because it was expected, nor did he even consider if anyone else was watching. But I was. I knew I was witnessing the best moment I have ever seen in youth sports. I wish I could have that kind of heart every day. This 15 year old kid showed me the meaning of sportsmanship in a way that I never could have scripted.

Congratulations Connor Shea for being a fantastic human being. His parents are Chip and Kristen Shea and they deserve as much credit as anyone for raising a child who knows the meaning of respect.
