Slovakia - Bulgaria 82-0

This has to be one of the craziest stories I have ever read. When I played football I was on a few teams that got waxed pretty bad this is something that hard to beat a 82-0 drubbing.

Now I hear they finally have an actual video of this historic drubbing. Check out the score board at the beginning of this clip.

Check out this box score for this game. You kind of wonder if there is a mercy rule or not. The shots on goal were 134-0 in favor of Slovakia, wow...

Hey Sundin would you make a decision?

I am begining to wonder if hockey fans are ever going to have a answer. Hey Mats please make a decision, it really isn't all that though. 1.) You're either going to play hockey this season or 2.) Yyou are not going to play. What is wrong with some of these guys?
Execs want Sundin's answer
Wednesday August 27
Mats Sundin's decision on his future may or may not come this week. While teams slowly start to get ready to go back to work with the opening of training camp less than three weeks away, many are wondering what the 37-year-old captain of the Maple Leafs is going to do this season. With several teams -- including the Leafs, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks and Philadelphia Flyers -- making pitches for Sundin, the unrestricted free agent center is at home in Sweden weighing his options and trying to decide if he's even going to suit up this season. Oddly enough, the teams involved in the sweepstakes aren't the only ones who wish that Sundin would make a decision. Several teams trying to make moves are being handcuffed because if Sundin does decide to play, then it's going to affect how much they spend under the $56.8-million salary cap.

Jeff Dubay of FSN/KFAN 1130 wearing a Fighting Sioux hat!

This is one of these pictures that you just have to share. That's right folks Gopher rube and KFAN personality Jeff Dubay wearing a Sioux hat. I guess we always thought he was a closet Sioux fan. A couple of weeks ago he was wearing a SCSU Huskie tie during a hockey broadcast. What next Joe Finley jersey? That is probably not going to happen.

Starting them out early in life.

Someone asked me tonight how the Goon's daughter is doing? Well we are already working on her hockey allegiances, she hates the goofs and loves the Sioux. Abby is also growing up as a NHL hockey fan

This is over the top

When I watched this the fist time I thought it was a little over the top. I watch FSN a lot with the Wild and they do all kinds of stuff like this. This clip is a real head scratcher, I wonder how they came up with this one. I kind of actually wonder if the guy in the Sioux jersey woke up with any bruises the next day?

This should get you in the Mood; Sioux vs Goofs...

I never get sick of watching this replay, it has to be one of my favorite moments in Sioux hockey history. What makes this even sweeter, it was a week after this goal in the Final Five as Blake Wheeler scored a lucky goal.

I just can't believe that going into the Gophers and Sioux series there just isn't any energy oozing from this series at all, I know the Gophers suck this year and the Sioux might not be as good as years past, so Jeff Dubay tells us (Puffy), but this is the series most of us look forward to each year. In most series between the Goofs and Sioux you can spend all day sparing on the internet with Gophers fans but this year is different, most of them are hiding waiting to see how the first game goes. I thought I would include a few clips to get people in the mood.

Lets Review recent History:

This is the game that UND took off 40 minutes only to race back in the third period and beat the Gophers.

During the last series Sioux fans discovered what a hack Stu Bickel is as he butt ended a Sioux hockey player.

Who could forget Robbie Bina's 180 foot goal.

Last year during Saturday night's game at the John it wasn't even close as the Sioux ran the Gophers out of the building.

This never gets old either Marriucci West, I think not...

What is a Seawolf?

This week in WCHA hockey the Fighting Sioux are playing the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. When I ask people I know what a Seawolf is; no one has any clue what a Seawolf is? I can't for the life of me find the definition on the internet of what a SeaWolf actually is. I did fine one place on the internet where a Killer Whale is also known a Seawolf.

-------Edit----------
Per Mr. Burns post: A Seawolf is UAA’s athletics teams were originally known as the Sourdoughs, but the university adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977 when it elevated its program to the NCAA Division II level.

The name Seawolf represents a mythical sea creature that, according to Tlingit Indian legend, brings good luck to anyone fortunate enough to view it. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, is left to the imagination, thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years.

The Seawolf logo of today was designed and introduced in 1985 by Clark Mishler & Associates in cooperation with a university committee. It represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

~A fan from Mankato last week made the comment, "that Kaip is nothing more than a goon", however, in looking at the numbers that said goon has one more goal that Mankato's top scoring forward. That same forward had the misfortune of deciding to fight Kaip on Friday night's game.

~UND has won 5 WCHA games in a row for the first time since 2004.

~LGM's favorite UND goalie has given up 8 goals in the past 5 games.

11 Reason why Frazee Sucks

I recieved this in an email from the almost defunct Hockey_L. It is from the blogNihilist in Golf Pants Catchy name for a blog.
11. Actually enjoys hearing the "Sieve!" chant

10. Distracted by bearded economics professor in stands who kept baring his chest

9. Distracted by concern that racist graffiti on SCSU campus hasn't attracted enough media attention

8. Angry that Doug Woog is no longer coach, he could really use $500 under his hat

7. Wanted to see if he could get Coach Lucia to give him "the look"

6. His thoughts were consumed by his upcoming midterms in biochemistry and Elizabethan poetry

5. Was busy admiring the architecture of the National Concrete Center

4. Was busy daydreaming about how super-awesome Barak Obama is

3. Distracted by his new girlfriend in the stands, Ashlee Simpson

2. Distracted by concern that maybe Garth Snowe was right: his development is being retarded

1. He just sucks

Lets Go Mav's makes an appearance on Goon's world

This has become a yearly tradition; well ok, two years in a row. Here is what the Lets Go Mav's hockey blogger had to say.

Why do you hate the Fighting Sioux and Sioux fans so much?

Because I have never met one in person that is decent. They tend to come to our arena with a huge chip on our shoulder and smart off that the Mavs don't belong in the WCHA and that our arena sucks and so on. It's annoying and rude! Most opposing fans come to Mankato and think it's a good time because our fans are pretty friendly and they can enjoy adult beverages at the game. The other fans figure out we're fun but the Sioux fans are too stuck on themselves and are busy knocking us to have a good time. Also, their obsession with "everyone being jealous of us" gets old. As does the 7>5 thing and their overall arrogance.

Can’t we all just get along and be friends?

No, we can't!! :) Not until I see more respect. You know how most people like people until they do something to make them dislike them? Well, LGM is the opposite. I dislike people until they earn my liking. I'm just weird like that...so don't go looking for free friendships out of this girl!!

Name your Favorite Mankato State hockey memory?
Back to back weekend sweeps of SCSU and Wisconsin a couple of years ago. No! Wait...I take it back. I say the game that the Mavs won for the 1st time at the NHC when Clarky was in goal. Best time EVER!! I was sick of going to that arena and watching SCSU pound us. That game was SWEET and for me, started the Clarky obsession:)

Who is your favorite current MSU-M player?

Well, I can't go with just one! My top two are my boys Berge and Kalinski. Love them both! Closely followed by Zacharias, Kilburg, and Hot RJ.

Who is your Favorite Former MSU-M player?

Again, I have to go with two of them. Overall favorite would be Chris Clark. Love that kid. He is one of the greatest guys you'll ever meet. So nice, friendly, and a good role model for the kids. Second would be David Backes. All American Golden Boy, smarty pants (held a 4.0 all through college), and overall good guy. He's also doing awesome in the NHL, so that's great too. Plus, I did sort of spill some beer on his mom way back in the day and promised to cheer for him "as long as he played hockey" so I'm upholding my end of the deal. Good thing he's a good guy or that would be a hard promise to keep!

Why do you think Jutting is such a bad coach?

Ugg. Loaded question. Do you really have that much time?!? I'll just state a few. First off, he treats everyone like dirt basically. Has no respect for players, parents, fans, other coaches, his peers....the list goes on and on. He's SO narcissistic it makes me want to puke. He's a total embarrassment to MSU.
Second, he runs crappy plays over and over (such as his stupid power play) and never realizes that maybe it's HIS way that sucks but instead blames the players year after year. Third, he always slams our players some way in the media. Even when he's trying to give a compliment, he ends up slamming someone. Drives me NUTS!!

Who is your Favorite NHL team(s)?

I'm not really into the NHL. I'll go with the Wild.

Who is your Favorite NHL player?

Steve Wagner. HA!!! Kidding. David Backes of course!!

What is your favorite NHL Jersey?

I like the Flyer's jerseys. I can't wait for Kalinski and Nodl to play for the Flyer's so Heather and I can get matching jerseys of our boys!! It'll be the first time ever for us to agree on hockey!

Who is a bigger hack Matt Demarci or Stu Bickel?

Stu Bickel. Wouldn't you be a hack too if you had all that pent up aggression from having that name?!?

Which Arena do you like the best MSU-M Midwest wireless center or REA?

I've never been to REA...next year!!! That's my plan at least. For the record it's the ALLTEL Center now!! The Alltel is ok but I really do wish we had a "real" hockey arena. Maybe some day!

What are your predictions for this weekend Series?

Well, my boys let me down a bit last weekend. No clue what was up with them but they were just off. I'm thinking positively this weekend and I say a split. Mavs win Friday, Sioux win Saturday.

Where do the Mav’s finish in this seasons standings?

7th. I wish higher, because home ice would be awesome but with our lack of points as of now and looking at what's ahead it could be tough. Who knows though...the WCHA is so screwy this year!

Why don’t you think Racing is a sport?

Because if you're sitting your ass in a car it's not physical enough to be a sport. I'm from small town MN where everyone goes to "the races" 2 nights of a weekend in the summer and live and die by NASCAR and I think they're all hicks. They're like "hockey? What's hockey? Bring on Jeff Gordon!" A friend of mine went to Bristol the other year and was excited about it. I ripped on her forever about it!! Racing is not a sport. Never was. Never will be.

Is hunting a sport?

I think hunting is a "different" sport. Since there's strategy and the person is out in the woods moving around and stuff to kill some animal, I can see how it's a form of a sport, but not something I would traditionally call a sport.

What is your favorite Breed of Dog?

Honestly, I'm not much of an dog gal. Cripes, I'm not much of an animal gal to be truthful. They're dirty, smell, and are just a pain. Plus, most animals are unpredictable. That would explain why I'm petrified of cows!!
If I had to choose a dog though, it would be a Shih tzu. They're so cute and cuddly! I like the little lap dogs that you can carry around in your purse:) Not that I would do that. Oh, well maybe to my brother's new dog though. They just got a Min-Pin and he would kick my ass for putting it in a girly purse...so that would be worth it! Ha ha! Maybe I'll put a little tu-tu on Stanley and carry him around in my purse just to annoy my brother.

Would you rather own a Lab or Bull Dog?

Oh my god! Are you psychic that these are the two breeds I hate the most?!? I have two college friends that have one of each. God...when I go to the one's house and see Gunner (stupid slobbering lab that eyes me up like I'm a pheasant or something) coming at me I freak. Then again, when I go to the others and fat, ugly, slobbery, annoying Romeo (the Bulldog) come at me I freak too. I'll go with hating the Bulldog more because the last time I saw that stupid dog he was drooling on my foot and sneezed on my leg. YUCK! So...I guess the lab wins...but barely.

These pictures should erase all doubt

Super Fighting Sioux fan Sioux-Cia (name changed to protect the innocent) from Siouxsports.com sent me these very funny pictures. Most Fighting Sioux fan will think that these pictures are very funny especially after watching last years UND and Minnesota series. One does have to wonder if WCHA ref Jon Campion had a Gopher jersey under his ref uniform. I am sure there were other Sioux fans that wondered the same thing. Although I am sure most Gopher fans won't see the humor, they never do you have to admit that this is funny. If your not laughing you should be...

Minnesota is the team they love to hate

Here is a must read article that was written by Scott Weighart. The article has some really good points and it also has some your classic whining as well from Don Lucia.

by Scott Weighart/Senior Writer
BOSTON (Dec. 14) — When University of Minnesota coach Don Lucia opted to leave his post at Colorado College in favor of taking the helm of the Golden Gophers, one of his counterparts saw the writing on the wall — or perhaps the writing on the USCHO Message Board.

“I remember when I was thinking of taking this position, I had another colleague in my league call me and say, ‘Why would you want that job? Everybody likes you now. If you go there, every body's going to hate you,’” Lucia recalls.

While this might not be true of Lucia personally, it does appear to be the case with the Minnesota program. A recent USCHO poll asked readers to vote on the team that they most love to hate. The Golden Gophers were the decisive winners, garnering 27 percent of the votes — substantially more than second-place North Dakota.

The funny point is the fact that UND is the second most hated team in the league. I was wondering who number three was. I actually find that funny, I am sure there were a lot of Gopher fans voting for the Sioux. I wonder how many times Amy from Lets go Mavs voted. He, he, he...

You have got to love this Badger fan as he nails it spot on. I also have to agree with him, I like many fans around the league also watch every game Minnesota plays in on FSN and I enjoy each gopher loss even when it is to the Badgers, Pioneers and Tigers. If I was watching an NCAA title game and it was Maine or B.C. against the Gophers I am going to be cheering for the Hockey East team. I just can't stomach listening to their fans bragging about another national title.
“Why do I love to hate Minnesota?” asked David Krawczyk, 27, of Madison, Wis. “Its the arrogance of the fans. The experiences I have had in the Xcel and in the Mariucci are by far the worst that I’ve had in any opposing rink or ‘neutral sites’. Even worse is the behavior of some of the fans when they travel. By no means am I saying every Gopher fan acts this way, but enough do to really stand out and overshadow the many reasonable fans.”

Perhaps these experiences led to Krawcyzk capturing the feelings of many opposing fans in Gopher territory.

“As a UW fan and alum, it is one of the things that is always a constant,” Krawcyzk said. “I root for Minnesota to lose every game. I laugh when they lose embarassingly. I get behind whatever team is playing them that week and if I’m watching the game at home on TV, I become one of the biggest ______ (insert team here) fans in the country if only for one night. My two favorite teams are the Badgers and whoever is playing the Gophers that night.

“Under zero circumstances could I ever root for Minnesota. If a Gopher victory was the only thing that could get UW into the NCAA tournament, I would still root for the Gophers to lose, and lose badly.”

Here is some blatant whining by tDon. I think what Lucia forgets is that his own fans bring it upon themselves, either that or he is oblivious to the facts at hand. It's the moron fans that corner you in the bathroom at the urinal to lecture about their team. It's the clowns that sit behind you at hockey games at the XCel energy center that don't have any hockey knowledge what so ever. It's your own fans that whine about every petty trivial matter. It would be interesting to know which arena that Lucia's wife is talking about.

So the question remains: Can’t we all just get along as college hockey fans? Lucia acknowledges that opposing crowds are much more negative toward Minnesota than to his previous programs, but he also was hard-pressed to believe that Gopher fans were worse in their behavior than those at other programs. “Rest assured that I’ve been at CC and I’ve been at Alaska, and I’ve been at Minnesota, and when I go with Minnesota’s team to another facility, the way we’re treated, it’s amazing how different it is — from vulgarity to everything.

“I wouldn’t know that because I’m obviously not sitting in the stands,” qualified Lucia when told about complaints I had heard about how visiting fans had been treated at Mariucci. “You certainly hope that’s not the case. I know that we go to another facility in this league, and the whole student section is chanting ‘F the Gophers’ in unison and out loud. I’ve never heard anything like that from our fans.

“I know there’s some Minnesota fans who don’t even like going to another facility in the league — I don’t want to name names — because of how they’re treated. I know my wife even had that experience last year: There’s one facility in our league she’ll never go back.”

That said, Lucia’s biggest point was that all school administrators should be taking responsibility to get crass profanity out of arenas or any other exchanges. “We’ve got to get the vulgarity out of it. To me, that’s on the administration to get that out of it. I think it’s great when fans are into it, but I hate the vulgarity, whether it’s fan or fan or on opposing players. That has no place.”

Lucia agreed that the situation is a vicious circle. People resent the Gophers’ success, and they respond negatively to the team and their fans, thereby increasing the chip on the shoulder that some Gopher fans may feel when interacting with other fans. “It’s easier to point the finger at the other person. Personally I don’t think any visiting fans should be disrespected by hometown fans no matter where you’re playing.”

Merry Christmas from Goon's World

Merry Christmas from Goon's World. May the holiday season be kind to all of you. I wish everyone a happy and healthy 2008. Go Sioux.

Goon's Wish list for 2008

1.) To have the Sioux hang a NCAA championship Banner #8. 8>5 sounds great.
2.) Find an acceptable solution to the logo dispute. (That would mean keeping it)
3.) For the Sioux to have multiple sweeps of opponents on the road and at home.
4.) Win WCHA regular season title and playoff title.
5.) Break 80 in golf.
6.) Win the the lottery.

You have got to be Kidding me.

I found this blatant example of stupidity that was posted over on GPL Thanks to Fire_Helmet_Guy 26 for posting it over on Sioux Sports: It was posted by some Skippy named CMC.

I sent an email to UND right after the game on Friday regarding the Holy Cross comment by the PA announcer. Here is their response:
Mr. Cliff,
Thanks for your note.

For anyone who found that comment offensive, I apologize on behalf of our arena and athletic program. Certainly no intentional slight or disrespect was intended to the University of Minnesota's outstanding men's hockey program. I do believe that the interaction between the two schools and programs is conducted with the highest degree of professionalism.

PA announcements and scoreboard announcements are meant to entertain the crowd. If you attend regular college or professional sporting events, I am sure you understand there are a certain amount of scoreboard displays, music, and inflections by the public address announcement that are for this purpose and serve to help create a "home ice (field or court) advantage." That is what the intention was with that particular announcement. These type of announcements are intended as friendly ways to get the crowd involved--nothing more.

However, we do understand your opinion, and the opinions of some others who may feel that this particular PA announcement was in poor taste. Therefore, we are sorry for any offense taken at this announcement and any subsequent misunderstanding that has resulted. Again, our sincerest apologies to those who might not have understood the intent of this announcement or to those who feel it should not have been made.

We will make every effort to be careful about our public address announcements in the future to avoid such misunderstandings.

We have a great deal of respect for the University of Minnesota and all of our opponents.

Thank you for your thoughts, and I hope this response helps alleviate some of your concerns.

Best wishes,
Dan Benson
Media Relations Director
University of North Dakota Athletics

First off I would apologize for nothing and this moron is not entitled to anything other than the game he witnessed. People like this guy is the reason our once great country is in decline and going to hell in a hand basket. We are a nation full of cry babies that complain about everyone and anything. The USA has become this hypersensitive, sniveling, whinny bunch of wussies. This is the same person that lodges a complaint about everything and everything at work. Get real and cry me a fricken river junior, grow a sack and stop crying you sniveling baby. We have way to many bravo males in the world, I just don't have time for these morons. I suppose this cry baby thinks he has the right to not be offended. It's funny your team lost to a 16 seed and it will still be funny ten years from now. The 1989 game is still funny to me. Chink!

Lastly if I was Dan I wouldn't have even responded to his email or I would have written something like this:

Here is the letter Dan should written to this hypersensitive clown.

Dear Mr Cliff, thank you for your letter. Sorry you were offended by the announcement of Holy Cross being off this weekend. Since you are so thinned skinned I would recommend you stay home next time and watch the game on the Minneapolis Sports Channel where you are less likely to be offended and will get a less objective broadcast that suits your pro gopher needs. Please don't bother ever coming back up to the REA anymore, we don't need you nor do we want your money. We will gladly sell the ticket you would have bought to a more deserving, less sensitive and gracious hockey fan. You give the many great gopher fans a bad name.

Sincerely,

Dan Benson

License to kill gophers

May it's Sioux vs Gophers week and the message board fodder this week has been really weak. Oh well, this is one of my all time funny links.

The Stats for Lucia.

Someone sent me this in a email today and brought this to my attention. Wow, at first I must admit that I didn't really pay attention to those graphs (I am qualitative guy), but after analyzing the numbers it would appear that the mighty have fallen substantially. Talk about a power outage; Goals per game around the 2005-2006 time frame was 4.12. Now fast forward to present day 2007 and that number has dropped to 2.5. Wow; that stat is eye popping, when your team known for offensive prowess is only scoring 2.5 goals per game there isn't much room for error. Then you look down in the Gopher net and see Frazee standing there, I can see how people would be concerned. Yikes!

Power play

Another bread and butter of the Gophers was their vaunted power play in 2006-2007 the Gophers were scoring at a 22.4% clip. In other words you wanted to stay out of the penalty box when your team was playing the Gophers. Fast forward to present day 2007 the Gophers are scoring at 11.6% clip on the power play. I guess that the refs are going to have to double the penalties against the Sioux this weekend.
