Andrew Ference suspended for Game 2 for his elbow on

Andrew Ference is lucky that it was during the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs or his suspension would have been longer, this was a violation of the NHL's Rule 48 and his like this are unacceptable. Even though I am fan of the Boston Bruins and Andrew Ference, this is the right call by the NHL.

(Video) Andrew Ference to have hearing for his elbow on Mikhail Grabovski

After I saw this elbow, I had a feeling that Andrew Ference was going to get some scrutiny from the Department of Player Safety for this elbow on Leafs forward Mikhail Grabovskiand, and he will. Ference has a hearing today with the Department of Player Safety. I have to think that he will be getting at least a game suspension for this hit.

Andrew Ference elbow on Mikhail Grabovski

Someone mentioned this hit on twitter. I thought originally that Mikhail Grabovski had taken a dive but after further review you can see that he took an elbow to the face from Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference. Bruins fans have to hope that Andrew Ference isn't suspended by the National Hockey Leagues department of player safety. I can bet that Ference will at least be fined for this hit. Last week, Dustin Brown was given a two game suspension for a hit to the head of Jason Pominville.

Boston Strong and National Anthem to start the game (4/20/2013)

Andrew Ference speaks with Naoko Funayama before the game and then the moment of silence. Followed up by Boston Strong presentation and then a very emotional National Anthem. An unbelievable week in one of the most historic cities of our great nation. Boston is a strong and proud city.

No hockey in Boston tonight... Good decision by the NHL

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the senseless act of terrorism/violence. Nothing, I mean nothing, can justify this.

Per the NHL - The National Hockey League game between the Boston Bruins and the Ottawa Senators scheduled for Monday night at TD Garden was postponed hours after multiple explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

No makeup date for the game was announced by the NHL.

David Krejci hit on Brendan Gallagher and Alexei Emelin collides with Milan Lucic

I find it funny that Canadiens defenseman Francis Bouillon tries to fight David Krejci for his nice hit on Brendan Gallagher, but of course the minute that Boston Bruins Andrew Ference steps in for Krejci, Bouillon acts like your typical Montreal Canadien and drops to the ice and wants nothing to do with Ference.

How about this attempted hit by Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin on Milan Lucic? Yeah, that didn't work well for him, did it?

Interesting comments from Brendan Shannahan

Boston Bruins bench
Boston Bruins bench (Photo credit: slidingsideways)
I find it funny that Brendan Shannahan felt the need to comment on this situation, there is perception around the league that certain teams aren't going to get a fair shake because of his bias against those teams. Whether it's deserved or not, it's a perception that is out there. As a Wild and Bruins fan, I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that I have seen things that are questionable and grounds for scrutiny.

Just today the NHL suspended Tyler Meyers for a very similar hit that went unpunished this season, more specifically, these were some of the same kind of hits that the Wild and Bruins players were a victim of but no punishment was levied to the perpetrator. There seems to be one set of rules for Stars and a different set of rules for the goons and third and forth line players.

D.J. Bean, WEEI --- As for the Bruins in general, Shanahan responded to the idea that he has a bias against the B’s when it comes to suspensions. Marchand, Milan Lucic and Andrew Ference have all been suspended this season for various infractions.

“It’s funny, people in Boston might think I have something against the Bruins, which is so absurd and crazy,” he said. “It makes you feel any better I can promise you all I have to do is flip on my Twitter page, or if I ever wanted to venture onto the internet, almost every team in the league thinks there a specific reason I hate their market and hate their city as well.

“I have to defend why I don’t hate Pittsburgh, or why I don’t hate Montreal, or why I don’t hate Buffalo, or why I don’t hate Minnesota. For Boston, it’s even more absurd, quite honestly. Talk about a team I grew up admiring. Cam Neely is probably the one player I tried to model my game after more than anybody. It doesn’t matter if it’s a team you grew up admiring, or a team you played for, there’s so much scrutiny in this job, you can do this job and you can’t sleep at night, if you don’t do it with as much integrity as possible. That doesn’t mean you’re perfect. You would love to have a perfect season in sports. You can objectively look at this hit and disagree with the assessment, and that’s fair. That’s always going to be fair. But it’s absurd to suggest in any market that we have a grudge or have it in against anybody.”

The NHL Suspends Andrew Ference for three games

Brendan Shanahan the NHL's Senior VP Player Safety has suspended Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference for three games for a dangerous hit on former Wisconsin Badger Ryan McDonagh. I believe this is the right call and it will be interesting to see if Shanahan is consistent with his ruling in the future.

I always laugh when I see fans of other NHL teams saying that the Boston Bruins get all of the breaks from the NHL, they are now the most suspended team by the NHL. Apparently, the charge that Colin Campbell's son Greg Campbell plays for the Boston Bruins and because of that fact, they get away with bloody murder. That theory has had holes hot through and isn't holding up anymore.
NEW YORK -- Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference has been suspended for three games without pay for boarding New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh during NHL Game #699 in Boston on Saturday, Jan. 21, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Ference will forfeit $36,486.48. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 1:50 of overtime. A major penalty and game misconduct for charging were assessed on the play.

A nice touch, Andrew Ference's tribute to Mark Recchi

I thought this was a nice touch and an emotional moment for the Boston Bruins and their loyal fans. This past summer was a roller coaster ride as the Boston Bruins took three game sevens to bring home the Stanley Cup. Fast forward to last night, it was a great banner raising ceremony, however, the game was kind of a buzz kill. It's too bad that the Boston Bruins followed up the ceremony by losing the opening game of the 2011-12 season. I would be willing to bet that it's probably not the way that the Boston Bruins wanted to start the 2011-12 season, but I think most Bruins fans will let it slide for now.
James Murphy; ESPN.COM --- The ritual started late last season and continued throughout the playoffs. Recchi had been given the jacket after Game 7, when he registered an assist in what would be his last NHL game.

“It meant a lot to our team. It was a very proud thing for the guys after games, and we were very proud of it,” Recchi said. “When Andrew brought it in and we started it, it was a special thing, and to be able to get it last in Vancouver and then get it repeated tonight, in front of your home crowd, is something I’ll never forget.”

For Ference it was an easy move to make since Recchi was such an inspirational leader to him and his teammates over the last two-plus seasons. As Ference pointed out, Recchi defined what the jacket symbolized and deserved to be the last one to wear it.
It was a really nice touch to see Andrew Ference give Mark Recchi the "Jacket" one more time and it's only fitting that the last one to wear the "Jacket" was Recchi the grizzled veteran of 22 NHL seasons who retired right after his team had won the Stanley Cup. I don't think Hollywood could have drawn it up any better.

Andrew Ference takes Lord Stanley for a bike ride.

What an awesome way to spend a day with the Stanley Cup. It's also nice to see Andrew  Ference wearing a helmet while riding his bike.

Bruins sign Canadians stiff Benoit Pouliot

The Boston Globe is reporting this signing by the Boston Bruins. This is the waste of a one year contract and I do not like this pick up by the Boston Bruins one bit. So in essence the Boston Bruins are trading Michael Ryder's roster spot (who signed a free agent deal with the Dallas Stars) for Benoit Pouliot... This deal is a serious head scratcher and I am disappointed with the Boston Bruins front office. It has pretty much been proven that Benoit Pouliot for the most part has been another Minnesota Wild first round bust from the Doug Risebrough days.
Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff --- Bruins sign Benoit Pouliot The Bruins have signed Benoit Pouliot to a one-year, $1.1 million contract. RDS was among the first to report the signing.

The 24-year-old was the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft. Minnesota traded Pouliot to Montreal for Guillaume Latendresse on Nov. 23, 2009.

This past season, Pouliot scored 13 goals and 17 assists in 79 games. Pouliot was a healthy scratch for four games in the first round against the Bruins.

The 2005 draft included Sidney Crosby, Carey Price, Bobby Ryan, Jack Johnson, Marc Staal, Anze Kopitar, Paul Stastny, and Keith Yandle. Framed against those players, Pouliot has been a major disappointment. In 183 games, Pouliot has scored 37 goals and 35 assists. The left-shot forward will be a reclamation project for the Bruins, who like his size (6-foot-3, 199 pounds) and skill.

In Boston, Pouliot is best known for one-punching David Krejci during the regular season. In the playoffs, Pouliot took a run at Johnny Boychuk, which brought Andrew Ference calling.

Bruins stand behind Tim Thomas...

Hockey is a team game and there is a lot of blame to go around for the game two loss, so for the Boston Bruins fans that are blaming the goalie Tim Thomas for the loss, seriously, you can't blame just one person for the game two debacle. Back to the first point; hockey is  a team game and when the systems break down the "team" loses, I think that its short sighted to put the blame solely on the shoulders of Vezina Trophy candidate Tim Thomas.  Go back and watch the video of the goal and you will see what I mean. [Click to view video]

There are a few good points in this ESPN video post above, that are worth looking at, it was a comedy of errors that led to the game winning goal by the Vancouver Canucks, it was a horrible defensive effort all of the way around. (1) The ill advised turn over at the blue line by Andrew Ference, that was brutal, Ference violated a cardinal sin by not getting puck deep, and the Vancouver Canucks who were pressuring hard blew by the Bruins defenders like they were pylons... (2) the bad effort behind the net by Zedano Chara, you have a guy that is 6'9" pull him down if you have to, there is a good chance that the Bruins penalty kill would have killed the penalty. (3) Tim Thomas over played the puck and lost, stay in the net and give your self a chance to make the save.

Alex Burrows takes a bite out of the Bruins.

The Boston Bruins lost a game after leading 2-1 going into the third period. The Boston Bruins had won about 88% of their games when they lead after two periods during the regular season and had been perfect in the Stanley Cup playoffs to date, all good things must come to and end.

So fast forward to overtime; this was a textbook example on how not to play hockey, if you want to win the game, turnovers and players being out of position will kill a hockey team every time. But lets not forget that the bad effort started in the third period as the Boston Bruins tried to sit on a lead instead of attacking and they never really tried to stretch the lead. I believe in this instance that the Boston Bruins went to the well one too many times and it might have cost them a Stanley Cup.

Is this Karma?

Hollywood couldn't have scripted this ending any better for the home town Vancouver Canucks, forward Alex Burrows, who could have been suspended for biting Patrice Bergeron in game one, scored two of the games three goals including the game winning goal just 11 seconds into overtime. The game ending play was a comedy of errors starting with a brutal turner over by Andrew Ference at the blue line, followed up a non challenge of Burrows behind the Bruins net by Zedano Chara and finally bad positioning by Tim Thomas who was grossly out of position. If Thomas stays in the net there is a good chance that Tim Thomas stops the shot by Alex Burrows.

Henrik Sedin dive

Greg Louganis would be proud of the Vancouver Canucks diver forward Henrik Sedin because based on his antics during the Stanley Cup playoffs he has shown that he can dive with the best of them. If you look you will see Henrik Sedin spear Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference in the groin area, no call on either infraction.

Bolts uber hack Steve Downie tries to kiss Andrew Ference.

First off, most of you know that I don't like Tampa Bay's uber hack Steve Downie, I just think he is a dirty hockey players that is one stupid move away from another lengthy suspension from the NHL. Steve Downie is also a bit of a punk that has never seemed to grown up,  I would almost put him in the same category as Matt Cooke.

I think eventually these types of players, I call them uber hacks, will get whats coming to him, someone is going to catch him with his head down or finally decide they have seen enough and punch his lights out. Personally, I thought Jack Johnson's  elbow on this P.O.S. during the World Juniors was over blown and warranted. Tonight this lovely piece of dog excrement looks like he tried to kiss or blow Boston Bruins' defenseman Andrew Ference a kiss, here is a a more funny version of the kiss in question.

Andrew Ference will not be suspended by the NHL.

According to John Bishop aka BISH...
Chiarelli on Ference: "No suspension."^BISH
Looks like the matter is closed. The fans in Montreal wont be happy and they will claim their is a conspiracy because Colin Campbell's kid plays for the Boston Bruins. The fact remains that Mike Murphy, senior VP of hockey operations was the one that made the decision; Colin Campbell had to recuse himself from the ruling because of his son playing Boston. I know some fans are going to make comments about crickets chirping in the back ground.

This is what Peter Chiarelli had to say on matter at his morning press conference.
Boston Globe --- Andrew Ference was not suspended for his hit on Jeff Halpern. Ference had a disciplinary hearing this morning with Mike Murphy, senior VP of hockey operations. "I thought it was just incidental contact," Chiarelli said of his first reaction. "When I took a closer look, I saw where the league's concerns lie. When you look at the whole play, we turned the puck over at our blue. When that happens, the D is supposed to close off the rim around the wall. [Ference] was moving that way. What Andy said was that he just saw [Halpern] off his shoulder as he was moving. Looking up as he saw the turnover, his motion and the player's motion ran into each other."

They Said what? A couple of quotes...

I think this is a good explanation of how a lot of Bruins fans including me feel about show boat and the ever-so-cocky P.K. Subban. Let me be clear, the kid is an amazing talent that God has blessed with amazing athletic ability, however, it does appear that the good Lord given him a two cent brain... P.K. Subban yaps and runs his mouth all game long and then runs and hides behind the refs and turtles when called to the carpet. My advice to the young man is that not everyone is impressed with your antics, less theatrics and more hockey, lets see more highlight goals like the one above, but act like you been there before.
Montreal Gazette --- Montreal defenceman P.K. Subban, who may be the most disliked man in Boston, sent the game into overtime when he scored a power-play goal at 18:23 of the third period.

Subban, who was described by one Boston writer as “a puck, a whiner and a diver,” scored on a shot from the point after Patrice Bergeron went off for high-sticking James Wisniewski.
Damien Cox from the Star had an interesting perspective of how the Bruins "beat" the Montreal Canadian this season. I would say that his point of view is from a Canadian and not someone covering the Boston Bruins. Reading this you would have thought the Boston Bruins were a bunch of ruffians or goons.
Just a year ago, the Habs were money in seventh games, upsetting Washington and Pittsburgh. But in the same way the Blackhawks tied Game 7 against Vancouver late in regulation but lost in overtime, the Habs forced OT Wednesday on a late goal by P.K. Subban, but were then vanquished in the extra session by Nathan Horton’s slapshot goal that was redirected past Carey Price for a 4-3 Boston win.

This, after everything that happened between the Habs and Bruins in the past two months, will be a bitter pill for the Canadiens and their legions of fans to swallow. Not only were they eliminated by Boston, the Habs were brutalized by the Bruins all season.

It started with the controversial Zdeno Chara hit on Max Pacioretty, included one brawl-filled contest, continued into the sixth game of this series with Milan Lucic’s vicious hit on Jaroslav Spacek and in Game 7 included Andrew Ference’s dirty headshot on Jeff Halpern that went unpenalized.

The Bruins did this year what the Caps couldn’t last year, and that was use their superior size to bully the smallish Habs.

The Bruins are moving on. Ference to face spin of the Wheel of Justice

The Boston Bruins closed out the Montreal Canadians last night in overtime of game seven after being down 2-0 to start the series. I felt at times the Bruins were lucky to be in this series as the Speedy Habs were all over the Boston Bruins and beating the Bruins to the puck only to be stoned by the Boston Bruins all-world goalie Tim Thomas. At other times the Bruins looked like they were a much better team. I thought all around this was a sloppy series and the breaks for the most part went Boston's way as the Bruins won three games in overtime. The fact that the Bruins beat the Habs again in the Stanley Cup playoffs makes this win even more special.

Power Play outage

The thing that is hard to phantom is that he Boston Bruins didn’t score a power play goal the whole series against the Canadians and were able to win the series. Also the Bruins gave up a shorthanded goal tonight. The Bruins went 0-21 on the power play against the Canadians.

Andrew Ference to face the Wheel of Justice

Andrew Ference has a conference call with the NHL disciplinarian for this hit on the Habs forward Jeff Halpern during the third period of last night's game. Based on what some players have been allowed to get away with during the first round of the NHL playoffs, it's hard to imagine what kind of a punishment that Andrew Ference would get.
NESN.COM ---- Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference may not be with the Bruins on Saturday afternoon when they open up their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup in Philadelphia against the Flyers.

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, Ference will have an 11 a.m. phone hearing with the NHL on Thursday to discuss his hit on Montreal's Jeff Halpern. The hit in question took place in the third period of the Bruins' 4-3 win over the Canadiens in Game 7 of their first-round series.

Halpern fell to the ice and eventually had to be helped off after apparently colliding with Ference's shoulder. The hearing will likely center around whether or not Ference leaned into Halpern to deliver the blow.

As McKenzie pointed out in a later tweet, it will be interesting to see what the league does for a guy like Ference who was critical of teammate Daniel Paille after Paille received a four-game suspension February for his hit on Dallas' Raymond Sawada.

Questionable Ference hit on Halpern (by REDWING77)

Viewing this hit, what is surely going to happen in the comments thread of this video is the proverbial splitting of hairs. Halpern and Ference collide. There is DEFINITELY contact to the head on this play.

The hair splitter is whether or not Ference raised his elbow/shoulder. His elbow clearly bends pre-hit, but his shoulder does not rise. Nevertheless, Halpern does something EXTREMELY stupid: Skate at a player with his head down.

I'm not quite certain what Halpern was trying to do here. The puck wasn't near Ference when Halpern swerved to maneuver into contact with Ference and Ference clobbered him... seemingly.

The issue with Ference is that he sees it coming and does nothing to avoid contact. In fact, he slows down before contacting Halpern. This could mean two things (hence another hair splitter):

1. Ference was trying to soften the blow, as skating produces a shifting of the shoulders that could produce an actual elbow or shoulder to the head in so much as seemingly intentional of manner, just as much as the momentum going in the opposite direction of the oncoming Halpern could further cause harm.

2. Ference slowed down to ensure contact with Halpern.

Both are plausible. Also the pretence that Halpern skated in on Ference to level Ference may have been the intent and Halpern just did it wrong.

Either way, no suspension. But Montreal will call for it.

Let the hair splitting commence.
