Here is the week 19 WCHA Power Rankings. This season, I have been doing the WCHA Power Rankings with Taylor Seibel, who is a contributor for College Hockey Weekly.

1.  Saint Cloud State – (18-11-1, WCHA 15-6-1) – This past weekend, the Huskies were off. This weekend, the Huskies travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado to play the Colorado College Tigers.
2. Minnesota – (20-6-4, WCHA 12-6-4) – This past weekend, the Minnesota Gophers split (3-2 W – 2-3 L) their weekend series with the Wisconsin Badgers. The Gophers won indoors at the Kohl Center on Friday night, and then lost to the Badgers at the Hockey City Classic at Soldier Field on Sunday afternoon. This weekend, the Gophers entertain the slumping Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs who have won one game, in their last eight (1-6-1).
3University of North Dakota – (16-8-6, WCHA 11-5-6) – This past weekend, UND was off. This weekend, the University of North Dakota travels to Denver, to play the Pioneers in an important two game series at Magness Arena in Denver, Colorado.
4. Minnesota State Mankato – (20-9-3, WCHA 14-9-1) – This past weekend, the Mavericks swept (4-2 W – 6-1 W) the Michigan Tech Huskies at the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato. This weekend, the Mavericks are off.
5.   Denver University – (15-9-5, WCHA 10-7-5) – This past weekend, the Denver Pioneers were off. This weekend, the Pioneers entertain the University of North Dakota in a pivotal two game series at the Magness Arena in Denver, Colorado.
6. Nebraska Omaha – (18-12-2, WCHA 14-8-2) – This past weekend, the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks swept (3-0 – 6-5 O.T. W) the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves at Sullivan Arena. This weekend, the Mavericks have an exhibition game against the U-18 team.
7.  Wisconsin – (13-10-7, WCHA 10-7-7) – This past weekend, the Wisconsin Badgers split (2-3 L – 3-2 W) their weekend series with the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Badgers lost at the Kohl Center on Friday night, before winning on Sunday afternoon at the Hockey City Classic at Soldier Field.  This weekend, the Badgers entertain non-conference foe Penn State at the Kohl Center.
8.  Colorado College – (11-14-5, WCHA 8-10-4) – This past weekend, the Colorado College Tigers were off. This weekend, the Tigers entertain the Saint Cloud State Huskies at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
9. Minnesota Duluth – (10-16-4, WCHA 8-12-4) – This past weekend, the Bulldogs took a single point (2-4 L – 1-1 T) in their weekend series with the Bemidji State Beavers at the Sanford Center. This weekend, the Bulldogs travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota to play the Gophers. The Bulldogs are winless in their last six games and have only won one game in their last eight games 1-6-1.
10. Michigan Tech – (10-16-4, WCHA 6-14-4) – This past week, the Huskies beat (8-2) the Northern Michigan Wildcats in Houghton, Michigan on Tuesday night in a nonconference tilt, and then this past weekend, the Huskies were swept (2-4 L – 1-6 L) in their weekend series with Minnesota State Mavericks at the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato. This weekend, the Huskies are off.
11. Bemidji State – (6-17-7, WCHA 5-13-6) – This past weekend, the Beavers took (4-2 W – 1-1 T) three points from the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs at the Sanford Center. This weekend the Beavers are off. The Beavers got their first win since December 15, 2012 when they beat the Denver Pioneers 5-1 on December 12, 2012
12. Alaska Anchorage – (4-19-7, WCHA 2-18-6) – This past weekend, Seawolves were swept (0-3 L – 5-6 O.T. L) by the Omaha Mavericks at the Sullivan arena. This weekend, the Seawolves are off.
Taylor Seibel’s WCHA Power Rankings
1. St. Cloud State – (18-11-1, 15-6-1 WCHA) – The Huskies were off this past weekend.  St. Cloud also received some help from Wisconsin on Sunday, to give the Huskies a bit of breathing room in the race for the MacNaughton Cup.  SCSU’s magic number is now 9 points to clinch a share of the Cup.  The Huskies will look to reduce that number this weekend as they travel to Colorado Springs to take on the CC Tigers.
2. Minnesota – (20-6-4, 12-6-4 WCHA) – The Gophers played very well on Friday in Madison at the Kohl Center, earning a 3-2 victory, but were edged out by the Badgers on Sunday in Chicago.  The loss hurt the Gophers chances at defending the Cup, but Minnesota fans should keep in mind that bigger prizes are still within their reach.  Minnesota squares off against in-state rival Minnesota Duluth at Mariucci Arena this weekend in WCHA play.
3. North Dakota – (16-8-6, 11-5-6 WCHA) – North Dakota was off this past weekend.  UND still has an outside shot at winning the conference, but it will likely take a perfect run over their next 3 weekends.  Given Coach Hakstol’s track record in the months of February and March, that is certainly a doable task.  It will all start next weekend, as North Dakota travels to the Mile High City to take on the University of Denver in a renewal of a bitter rivalry.
4. Nebraska Omaha – (18-12-2, 14-8-2 WCHA) – The Mavericks of Omaha used some late game heroics to sweep Alaska Anchorage this weekend, temporarily vaulting UNO up to second place in the conference.  The Mavs sit just a point behind St. Cloud in the race for the MacNaughton, but they have played 2 more games.  That will change after this upcoming weekend, as Omaha squares off against the USA Under-18 Team in an exhibition on Friday.
5. Minnesota State – (20-9-3, 14-9-1 WCHA) – What a difference a year makes!  Predicted by many to finish in the bottom quarter of the conference, the Mavs of Mankato have been tremendous this season.  Following a weekend sweep of Michigan Tech, the Mavs are sitting in third place in the conference, albeit having played two more games than both Minnesota and North Dakota, each of whom are just one point behind.  Next weekend, Mankato is off.
6. Wisconsin – (13-10-7, 10-7-7 WCHA) – The Badgers hosted arguably the best team in college hockey this weekend, and managed to skate away with a split.  Wisconsin has been playing very well of late, losing only twice in conference play since the beginning of December.  The streak has the Badgers in position to make a charge for home ice in the first round and a top-half finish in the WCHA.  However, Wisconsin will take a step away from WCHA play next weekend, as the Badgers host Penn State in non-conference action.
7. Denver – (15-9-5, 10-7-5 WCHA) – The Pioneers were off this weekend.  Denver currently sits just outside the top half of the conference, but they have 2 games in hand over Wisconsin, who sits just ahead of the Pios.  DU is capable of beating anyone in the country, or losing to anyone in the country.  That could come in very handy over the next two weekends, as Denver hosts North Dakota this weekend, and travels to Minnesota the following weekend.
8. Colorado College – (11-14-5, 8-10-4 WCHA) – Colorado College was off this weekend.  The Tigers have been on a roller coaster of ride this season in conference play, as they started the season on fire, cooled off tremendously, and now are playing solid, but only have 1 win and 3 ties in their last 4 games.  The road doesn’t get any easier, as WCHA leading St. Cloud State comes to town next weekend to take on CC in a critical series for both squads
9. Minnesota Duluth – (10-16-4, 8-12-4 WCHA) – The Bulldogs were only able to gain 3 points against in-state rival Bemidji State this weekend, effectively eliminating the Bulldogs from home ice contention.  Minnesota Duluth is talented, but very young.  Four of Duluth’s Top Six scorers are underclassmen, and their number one goalie is also a freshman.  This is not likely to be Duluth’s year, but they still have the opportunity to play spoiler next weekend at Minnesota.
10. Bemidji State – (6-17-7, 5-13-6 WCHA) – The Beavers surprised many this weekend, as they took three points against Minnesota Duluth.  Their victory on Friday was their first Friday victory of the season, and their first win since December 15th.  Bemidji is off next weekend, and they have a brutal finish to conference play, as they travel to North Dakota in two weeks, and then host Minnesota the following week.
11. Michigan Tech – (10-16-4, 6-14-4 WCHA) – The Huskies traveled to Mankato this weekend, and they were swept by the Mavericks in convincing fashion.  It has been a disappointing year for Tech, as many, including this writer, believed they had what it took to be a home-ice team.  The Huskies have next weekend off to lick their wounds before traveling out to St. Cloud to take on the Huskies March 1st and 2nd.
12. Alaska Anchorage – (4-19-7, 2-18-6 WCHA) – The Seawolves nearly upset Nebraska Omaha on Saturday, but fell in OT.  The loss meant getting swept at home for only the third time this season.  UAA knew this season would likely be a difficult one, and it has been.  The Seawolves have next weekend off to prepare for in-state rival Alaska in the Governor’s Cup.

T.J. Oshie goal against the Vancouver Canucks

Former Fighting Sioux and current Saint Louis Blues forward T.J. Oshie scores his fifth goal of the year against the Vancouver Canucks.

The box score should read T. OSHIE (5) WRIST - ASST: D. BACKES (9) AND D. PERRON (7)...

Boston Bruins game winning goal by Brad Marchand

You read that right, the Boston Bruins scored on the power play... Yeah, who would believe it? So far this season, the Boston Bruins are 6/46 (.13) on the power play and actually scored the go ahead goal at the .36 mark of the third period on the power play  with a goal from forward Brad Marchand.

That would be Marchand's eight goal of the season. The Little Ball of Hate also drew the penalty that lead to the play in question as well. The Boston Bruins have now scored two power play goals in two consecutive games in a row.

There is some question, on whether the Bruins forward Marchand dove on this play, looking at the video, I don't see any sign of embellishment.

John Ramage on Seth Ambroz

Good clean hard check by the Wisconsin Badgers defenseman John Ramage on Minnesota Golden Gophers forward Seth Ambroz. Ambroz appeared to be a bit shook up from the Ramage hit, but was able to make it back to the game.

Badger goal by that was waved off

It looks like the on ice Officials made the right call on the play, we have to give them credit when they make the right call on the ice. I do find it funny and puzzling, that Brad Shepherd is reffing such a high profile game for the WCHA. From looking at the video, it's pretty obvious that the stick of Badger forward Joseph LaBate is above the cross bar when he touches the puck.

ND and Miami Scrum at the end of the game

Here was the end of the first game of the Hockey City Classic. I watched this scrum numerous times on my television, and it looks like, Notre Dame forward Jeff Costello spears some random Miami RedHawk at the end of the game. There were no penalties called on the play. It will be interesting to see if the CCHA officials review the video from the end of the game, to see if there is anything else that warrants additional supplemental discipline.

Brendan Gallagher has concussion after being driven into the boards

Another hit, from the dangerous hit department. Also, from the big shock department, another dirty hit from a Philadelphia Flyer. Seems to be a re-occurring theme in the NHL, another dirty hit by a Philadelphia Flyer. Don't expect the Flyers Luke Schenn to get any form of supplemental discipline for this hit on Brendan Gallagher.

Mike Voran hit from behind on Taylor Richart

Watch this hit by Notre Dame forward Mike Voran as he hits Miami defensman Taylor Richart from behind.  This hit is unacceptable and you have to applaud the on ice official for giving Voran a five minute major and a game disqualification.

It would also be disappointing, to be thrown out of such an awesome, high profile event such as the Hockey City Classic for a needless, unnecessary and illegal hit from behind.

There is no way that you can defend this hit. If you watch the video you will see that Richart hit Voran earlier in the shift, but still, there is no reason for Voran to hit Richart while his back is turned to the play.

These are these are the types of hits that the powers that be are trying to eliminate from college hockey. I would be happy if we eliminated them from all levels of hockey.

UND women complete sweep of OSU Buckeyes

Grand Forks, ND – Tonight, the University of North Dakota woman’s team played their final home game of the regular season.
For eight seniors, tonight’s game marked the last time they would ever play a “regular season” game in the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
In two weeks, the UND women will play one more WCHA playoff series at the Ralph, as they clinched home ice for the WCHA playoffs with last night’s win.
With the win tonight, UND also extended its current win streak to eight games, and also tied the single-season wins record.
One could say that this night was historic for the UND women’s hockey program.
So on this night for the record books, the UND women (22-10-0, 17-9-0 WCHA) donned their black third jerseys and sent the fans home with something to cheer about, as they beat the Ohio State Buckeyes (16-14-2, 11-13-2-2 WCHA) 3-2 to complete the sweep.
This season’s senior class includes two world class players and 2010 Olympians Jocelyne Lamoureux (121g-150a—271) and Monique Lamoureux (106g-149a—255). Both players rank one and two and UND’s all-time scoring list.
Today was a special day for a special for the UND women’s hockey team, and the day wasn’t lacking in emotions. UND head coach Brian Idalski reminisced about his seniors.
“It was an emotional day, it always is,” Idalski said. “It’s a tough day to coach, quite honestly. It’s a special group and they’ve worked hard. We talked about what our vision is here and being the pinnacle of woman’s hockey and making this our woman’s NHL. So these are special kids that are a big part of getting us where we are today. Again, a special group and you know, the emotions kind of sprang out there a little bit good stuff.”
While the night belonged to the eight UND seniors, freshman Meghan Deufault led the way for UND on the score sheet with a couple of goals, including the game winning goal at the 14:11 mark of the second period.
“Were glad to get the two wins out because we needed that,” freshman forward Megan Dufault said. “Tonight was really emotional for our seniors, so I think everyone did a good job keeping their emotion in check and coming out with the win.”
It wasn’t a pretty win, but the Green and White came out on top. “We did what he needed to do to win the Hockey game,” Idalski said.
The work is not done for the UND women’s hockey team; next weekend they travel to Duluth for another crucial test against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. Jocelyne Lamoureux laid out the weekend ahead.
“Going into the post-season you want to be peaking at the right time,” Jocelyne Lamoureux said. “It’s good, but these are teams that we feel like we should be beating teams and we would be disappointed if we weren’t. Next weekend is going to be huge for us, it’s going to be big for points, Pairwise (rankings) and league so we have to be ready to go and take care of business.”

(Video): Senators owner Eugene Melnyk goes off on Matt Cooke

Apparently, the owner of the Senators Eugene Melnyk feels the same way I do about Penguins forward Matt Cooke. It looks like the Penguins are putting Cooke on notice. The last game between the Penguins and the Senators is going to be a dandy. It might be a blood bath.

"To have him [Karlsson] taken out by a goon [Cooke] it’s just unconscionable," Melnky said. "Whether it was accidental, or whether it was reckless, or whether it was intentional. To me it doesn't matter, it's something that should've never happen. These players should never be playing in this league, these guys are a dime a dozen. That’s exactly what they’re worth per game.”

UND Women run OSU out of the building

Grand Forks, ND – The University of North Dakota women’s hockey team has been on a bit of a role as of late, winning six in a row and seven of the last eight games that they played in.
Senior forward Jocelyne Lamoureux came into tonight’s game on a hot streak of her own. This past week, Lamoureux broke the existing league record for career points of 262 held by Wisconsin’s Hilary Knight (2007-12). The Record fell, when Lamoureux recorded seven points during last weekend series (0g-7a—7pts) against the Bemidji State Beaver, giving her a collegiate career total of 266 points (120g -146a—266pts) in 140 games played.
Tonight, a couple of hot streaks continued as the Green and White extended their winning streak to seven straight games, beating the Ohio State University Buckeyes 5-2.
With the win tonight, UND also clinched home ice for the WCHA playoffs, but the head coach didn’t seemed satisfied with that fact.
“For a long time, it was one of our goals [home ice] every year,” Head Coach Brian Idalski said. “That hasn’t changed, but I think it’s a smaller goal, and there’s still a lot of work to be done and I think we understand that. We got a big game tomorrow we got to turn around and be ready, that club has a lot of pride, their well coached and you have to show up and be ready to go.”
Senior forward Jocelyn Lamoureux remained smoking hot, as she added two more points to her already impressive career point’s total. Tonight, she chipped in (1g-1a—2pts). Not to be out done, Jocelyn’s twin sister Monique had an impressive night of her own, as she added three helpers (0g-3a—3pts).
Junior forward Michelle Karvinen who missed the first 12 games of the season with an undisclosed injury, continue her torrid pace as she chipped in two more markers. Karvinen now has (14g-26a—40pts). Tonight, Karvinen also recorded her 100 career point in just her 55th game and this is what she had to say on getting her 100th career point.
“It’s very special,” Karvinen said. “I am happy it’s not just like a rebound or something and it was a little nicer, it was great.”
The Ohio State Buckeyes actually took a 2-1 lead with a couple of goals from Captain Hokey Langan (Chatham, Ontario). That was all the closer the game would get as UND would blow the game open with three goals five minutes apart.
After the game, head coach Brian Idalski was asked about the explosion in the second period.
“I just thought we executed a little better,” Idalski said. “I thought we were a little hungry as far as getting pucks to the net and being the first to jump on rebounds. You have to out work them – they’re so good at playing with energy and competing and they’re very strong on pucks. You had to turn it up a notch to match that.”
Same two teams tomorrow night at 07:07 pm.
With the win tonight, UND currently sits in 8th of the Pairwise Rankings, UND would need to 8th or above to make the NCAA tourney.

Jonathan Toews vs Joe Thornton fight. Feb 15th 2013

With that tilt, former Fighting Sioux forward Jonathan Toews has been in three fights during his professional career. I guess that's why he wears the "C" and I have to tip my hat the Blackhawks center. Joe Thornton has been known to drop the gloves a little more frequently.

Alexx Privitera suspended by BU for rest of the season

Yeah this Alexx Priviter...

As I had mentioned in an earlier blog post when BU played UND – Boston University head coach Jack Parker is big on respect, and doesn't hesitate to suspend a player for disrespecting an opponent or the BU hockey program. It looks like Jack Parker has seen enough of Alexx Privitera for the season.
Mike McMahon , The Mack Report --- Boston University head coach Jack Parker has suspended defenseman Alexx Privitera for the remainder of the season, citing “on-ice discipline problems.”

Privitera was also suspended one game by Parker earlier this season for an alleged incident involving a North Dakota fan while the Terriers were visiting Grand Forks in November. He was then suspended two games — the second tacked on by Parker — after kicking a Denver player in December.

Final Thoughts on Matt Cooke’s hit on Erik Karlsson

Today, the discussion on twitter and around the hockey blogsphere is the hit that Matt Cooke put on Erik Karlsson.  You can see the hit on the embedded video posted above.
The NHL’s department of Player Safety has reviewed the play and will not suspend Matt Cooke.
First, I hate Matt Cooke, I think he is a disgusting P.O.S. and if this guy was hurt in a fight or by a check and could never play in the NHL again, I wouldn’t be upset. I hold the guy in the lowest regards. Also, if he was standing in front of me I would tell this to his face.
I understand that Cooke has cleaned up his act on the ice, but you can put chocolate frosting on a turd, it’s still a turd. I also don’t care what Cooke does off the ice; this low life scum has ruined too many good players’ careers on the ice. I also doubt that Marc Savard will donate money to Matt Cooke’s charities, again, it's Matt Cooke.
To me, Cooke is no different that Todd Bertuzzi.
That being said, I don’t think that Matt Cooke intended to make a dirty check in this instance. The fact that it’s Matt Cooke people will always look at him with skepticism.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Donn)

I can’t believe how tightly packed the standings are, this late in the season.  Only 6 points separate the top 7 teams.  With CC, DU, ND, and SCSU, on their last bye weeks of the year, the other teams have a chance to gain some ground, and move up the standings.  The Huskies have the inside track on the McNaughton Cup, but don’t have too much room for error with six other teams breathing down their neck.

WCHA Games

Minnesota-Duluth @ Bemidji St.
Last weekend the Bulldogs were swept by the MSUM Mavericks in Duluth (4-2, 5-1) and the Beavers got a point from the Badgers (2-2ot, 3-2) in Madison.

The Bulldogs have fallen on hard times, and they have lost five in a row.  But the vet might have what these dogs need, a bone, a big meaty, juicy bone, to chew on.  And that bone comes in the form of a Beaver, from Bemidji.  Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they have the UM and UNO left on the league schedule after this weekend. (They get another bone in between there, when they host Huntsville.)  The Beavers are now officially stuck in the bottom half and will travel in the first round of the playoffs. BSU has not won a game in 2013, their last win was December 15th versus Denver.  That is winless in 12 games, which includes three ties.  If the Beavers don’t get a win this weekend, they might not win in 2013.  They have two more series after this, at North Dakota, and then they host Minnesota.  SPLIT

Michigan Tech @ #9 Minnesota State
Last weekend the Huskies split with the Seawolves (5-4L, 6-1W) in Houghton and the Mavericks swept the Bulldogs (4-2, 5-1) in Duluth.  On Tuesday the Huskies erupted and put a snowman on the scoreboard against Upper Peninsula foe Northern Michigan, a 8-2 victory for the Huskies.

The Huskies have shown signs of life the last three weekends, going 3-2-1 in their WCHA games.  The Mavericks are winners of four of their last five games.  The Mavs are looking to keep up their winning ways and move up the standings with a pair of wins this weekend at the Verizon Center in Mankato.  MSUM can’t look past this weekend; they need to focus on trampling the Huskies in a stampede of goals.  This is what I’m predicting in this series.  MAVERICKS SWEEP

#16 Nebraska-Omaha @ Alaska-Anchorage
Last weekend the Mavericks were swept by NoDak (2-1, 5-2) in Omaha and the Seawolves split with the MTU Huskies (5-4W, 6-1L) in Houghton.

The Mavericks need to put last weekend in the past and move on, and move on big, with a big trip to Anchorage.  Omaha has a, we’ll call it, a favorable schedule, after UAA, they host Wisconsin and end the regular season at Duluth.  The Seawolves pick up their second league win last weekend, their first was on December 1st against SCSU.  The Anchorage faithfully can say that the Seawolves are playing their best hockey of the year currently, going 1-1-2 in their last four games.  Perhaps the Seawolves are gaining some confidence at the right time of the season?  If they can score like they have been as of late they could get another win this weekend.  But the Mavs boast a pretty good bunch of goal scores on their team, so UAA will need some defense and solid goal tending to get some more points.  MAVERICKS 3-PTS

#2 Minnesota @ #18 Wisconsin (Fri/Sun)
Last weekend the Gophers split with the SCSU Huskies (4-2W, 4-3L) in St. Cloud and the Badgers took three points from the Beavers (2-2ot, 3-2) in Madison.

I’m sure the Badgers are looking at the weekend with two goals in mind.  One get a pair of wins, to help them get a good grip on a home spot, and two, cost their rivals a chance at the last McNaughton Cup.  The Badgers have cooled off some the last few weekend going 1-1-2 in their last four WCHA games. However, most of the Badgers wins have come against the teams below them in the standings, and now they are playing a team ahead of them.  The Gophers are 2-2-0 in their last four WCHA games, which are their only two losses since December started.  Sunday’s game will be played outside at Chicago’s Soldier Field, let’s hope they don’t have ice problems like UND-UNO did last Saturday.  If Wisconsin can keep the score low and stay out of the box, they could get themselves some valuable points this weekend.  SPLIT

(Video) Matt Cooke hit on Erik Karlsson

I am going to preface this with, I hold Matt Cooke in a very low regard especially after what he did to former Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard and a few other players around the league. Make no mistake about it, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke is known for his dirty hits, this hit, however is not a dirty or a malicious hit. What do you think? Chime in... Hockey is a physical sport and injuries happen from time-to-time. Tough loss for the Senators.
