Nanne Rau hit not worthy of a one game suspension
Check out Lou Nanne's comments at the 33:15 mark of the podcast.
Lou Nanne had this to say on the Kyle Rau’s hit on Jason Zucker.
“The one penalty that I thought was out of whack was the one that they kept Rau out of the game Saturday. I think the referees did that because they probably felt that Zucker wasn’t going to play, which he didn’t that next night, and they were just trying to even things out,” Nanne Said.
“You could have given him the penalty that they gave him without throwing him out of the next game, I believe. I think they could have given him a boarding penalty and kept everyone happy.”
Barreiro asked Nanne if he felt the Rau hit was worthy of a one game suspension.

Matt Kassian vs. George Parros
I think this is the reason that the Wild have sent Brad Staubitz down to Houston and probably the reason we will never see Staubitz in a Wild uniform again. The emergence of Matt Kassian has made Staubitz expendable. Maybe the Wild can trade him to a team that needs toughness.
TD Ameritrade to host UNO, Lancer games
I have to be honest with you that I think the Outdoor Hockey games are a bit over done and I think that we have way too many of them, but I guess we shouldn’t look a gifted horse in the mouth eh? Looks like UND is finally going to be part of one of them… It will be interesting to see how many fans this will draw.

UNO and the Omaha Lancers are set to play outdoor hockey games next season, against North Dakota and the Lincoln Stars, respectively, according to sources.
A press conference to announce "a unique winter sporting event to be held at TD Ameritrade Park during 2013" is set for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the downtown stadium.
The 24,000-seat TD Ameritrade Park serves as the home of baseball's College World Series.
Tuesday's press conference will feature representatives from the Omaha Sports Commission, Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority, UNO, the Lancers and the Stars.
North Dakota and UNO are rivals in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Justin Fontaine suspended by Houston Aeros
Image via WikipediaFormer Minnesota Duluth Bulldog Justin Fontain has been suspended by the Houston Aeros for his comments he made on Twitter on Monday night. Michael Russo , Star Tribune --- The Wild suspended Houston Aeros forward Justin Fontaine for two games after he used a gay slur during a Twitter exchange about the Grammy Awards with a teammate on Sunday night.
Fontaine soon removed the tweet and apologized, saying, "My apologies to everyone, it was wrong. Twitter rookie and it came out totally wrong. It was a roommate battle, nothing more. #sorry."
By that time, however, it was retweeted by another teammate and spread across the Internet.
"Minnesota Sports and Entertainment (MSE) apologizes for the offensive slur that was posted by Justin Fontaine on Twitter last night," the Wild said in a statement Monday night. "Fontaine has been suspended from playing in the next two games for the Houston Aeros."
Lucia, "referees made the right call"

Lucia said he felt the referees made the right call when they gave Kyle Rau a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct for his hit on Denver forward Jason Zucker in Friday's game.After seeing the video of the Kyle Rau hit on Jason Zucker, it's good to see coach Lucia support the league decision on that Rau hit. Lucia does also make a good point, "You can go back to incidents -- what deserves extra and what doesn't?” I think that’s the question a lot of the fans are wondering as well.
WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod called Lucia that night, the Gophers coach said, to tell him the league was going to review the play. He watched it on video that night after not seeing it live.
The next morning Lucia said he talked to McLeod again and was told Rau would probably be suspended.
"At that time, we had the right to appeal the suspension, which would have allowed Kyle the right to play Saturday night," Lucia said. "But 99.9 [percent of the time] we probably would have lost the appeal and he would not have been allowed to play the next Friday night against Bemidji."
Lucia decided the best option was not to appeal, so he could prepare his lines better for the Beavers.
He said the difficult part of the situation was the supplemental discipline. "There were a couple of other major penalties on the weekend," Lucia said. "You can go back to incidents -- what deserves extra and what doesn't?"

J.T. Brown hit on Ben Blood
First off, I apologize for the quality of this video but it's better than nothing. I don't own a DVR Recorder and I was told by the guy that installed my DirecTV that soon we will be able to record video and down load it to a flash drive. I am still waiting for that to happen.
So here is the video of the hit that everyone has been talking about all weekend long. I think the right call was made, this is a dangerous hit by J.T. Brown on Ben Blood, there is no reason for Brown to make that hit at the end of the game. What do you think?
Ten thoughts on the weekend
Image via Wikipedia1.) I predict that UND is going to be in the mix when it’s all said and done. The hockey experts and hockey pundits that think UND mediocre and not very good are off base; this team is buying into the coaching staff’s systems and are getting better which each game. I don’t think anyone wants to have UND has their draw during the WCHA playoffs. I think this weekend the Fighting Sioux proved that they can skate with the “elite teams” like Duluth. The Bulldogs has no answer for UND tenacity in Friday’s game. The Fighting Sioux shut the Bulldogs down.
2.) Some undisciplined play by some key upper classmen in the first period of last nigh't game derailed the Fighting Sioux’s chances of getting a sweep. The Blood major penalty proved to be very costly for UND. I did not see the hit, and I have not seen the video of the hit either, so I will not give my thoughts on the hit. My seat on Saturday night was in the second row next to the UMD player’s bench and It was hard to see that end of the ice without the aid of the scoreboard video.
3.) Coach Hakstol said at the beginning of the year that other players besides the line of Kristo, Knight and Nelson would have to step up and contribute offensively.
Another line has started to show up on the score sheet and was smoking hot this weekend. The Rowney line has emerged as a pretty good threat, on the weekend Mark MacMillan 0-2-2, Carter Rowney 4-1-5 and Michael Parks 1-1-2. That’s (5g-4a—9pts) for that line on the weekend.
I would give that line all three stars for the weekend.
4.) Goaltending, this season Aaron Dell (2.80 GAA, .890 Save Percentage) has been very good when he is on and when he isn’t he has been lit up.
Last night, Dell wasn’t very good at all and I know it’s easy to second guess the coaching staff from the stands but I think that after the fourth goal, the coaching staff should have pulled Dell to breath some life into the Fighting Sioux.
I mentioned this to my friend today, that I think Brad Eidsnes (2.08 GAA, .924 Save Percentage) has been very good as of late and he was on last night. Eids made some big saves and positioning was very good. It also appears that Eidsness has fixed some parts of his game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him more down the stretch.
Over his four seasons with UND Eidsness has had a tendency to be streaky and when he is on his game he is a very hard goaltender to beat and I wonder if that goalie has emerged again? Personally, I hope the coaching staff rides him until he proves them wrong.
5.) Don Adam! What can I say about him? I thought the officiating combo of Don Adam and Tim Walsh was absolutely brutal this weekend for both teams. How these two guys continue to be employed by the WCHA is a mystery to many of us. You know it's bad when you hear a fan say, "hey it's Don Adam, what do you expect?"
I think the fans ask for some consistency from the on ice officials and I guess being consistently poor is consistency. Right? I think with Adam the amount of dangerous hits that he lets go is a concern for me and for other fans as well. The fact that these two on ice officials took such a long time to discuss the Joe Basaraba hit on Nick Mattson is a joke. That is a hit that we do not need in hockey.
I hope that when the NCHC begins play that they think long and hard before they get the idea that they need to employ the on ice officials from the WCHA.
I don’t buy the argument that the NCHC needs to use officials from the WCHA because there aren’t enough qualified officials out there. I think that argument is balderdash. The NCHC could recruit/pluck officials form the USHL to officiate the NCHC’s games.
I am tired of watching Don Adam skate around the ice with a scowl on his face blowing games with his horrible officiating. Let the WCHA or B1G have him as one of their officials.
6.) One guy that impresses me is junior utility player Joe Gleason. This season Gleason has played wing, center and defense. I think I would describe Gleason as player that will do what-ever-it-takes to win and help the team out.
I sometimes think that Gleason’s efforts go unnoticed and if you don’t look for him regularly you won’t notice all of the little things that he does in all three zones of the ice. Gleason is a role player that’s value is measured more in the things that don’t show up on score sheets.
This is what head coach Dave Hakstol had to say when he was asked about Joe Gleason after the Wisconsin series.
“Joe Gleason the epitome of a great teammate.”
“Joe is a proud guy and he obviously wants to play, he was recruited here as a defenseman, and both nights this weekend he played defense, he played center and he played right wing. I guess I would describe it as invaluable in a team setting. He is doing whatever the team’s needs, he not just going out and doing it, but going out and doing it well.”
7.) My thoughts on Amsoil Arena. I thought it was a nice venue and I like the layout of the arena. It’s a very comfortable building and I like the way it’s set up. The only thing that I don't like is the width of the halls around the buildings. They could be bigger and they get real crowded during the intermission.
Amsoil arena is very accessible from the highway and I like the way they do their parking. Unlike Ralph Englestad Arena, Amsoil Arena has a parking garage right next to the arena anyone can pay five dollars and park in it. You don’t have make a huge donation to the athletic department to park close to the arena. Another positive is that you walk straight into the arena from the parking garage.
Would I trade Ralph Englestad Arena for Amsoil Arena, not in your life but it’s a pretty nice place to attend a hockey game.
8.) Is UMD a rival game? Last week a fan from UMD post a comment on Sioux Sports about UMD not considering UND a rival. I think that comment is so far off of the mark, it’s silly.
This weekend’s series was very entertaining, and both games were very fun to watch. I think that this weekend’s series was some of the best hockey that I have watched all season.
There was also a lot of extra stuff going on during the games, there was a lot of the chirping and shenanigans on the ice. I would have to say that this was a nasty series where players from both teams needed to keep their head on a swivel. That's the kind of hockey that I like to watch.
I don’t think it would be an understatement to say that these two teams hate each other and the games were highly contested.
9.) I like the player that Dillon Simpson is becoming. I think he has grown up a lot as a player this season. If you think about it, Simpson is a 19 year old sophomore and he is younger than most of the players that came in as freshman this season.
What I have noticed about Simpson; he has been very smart with the puck and has done a good job getting puck out of the defensive zone and on to the sticks of the forwards. Dillon is a plus nine on the season, meaning he’s not a defensive liability.
I hope with his age that UND can keep him for two more seasons.
10.) As we all know, UND fans travel well and true to form there were a lot of green and white jerseys in the stands at Amsoil Arena this weekend.
The Let’s Go Sioux cheer was pretty loud as well. It was a fun trip and worth the time to go to Duluth to watch the series between UND and UMD this weekend. I am glad that both teams are going to be in the NCHC.

Minnesota Duluth – (13-6-3 WCHA, 19-7-4) The Bulldogs split with the UND Fighting Sioux this past weekend (1-3 L, 5-4 W). This weekend the Bulldogs travel to Minnesota State to play the Mavericks in Mankato.
2. Denver – (12-6-4 WCHA, 17-9-4). The Denver Pioneers swept the Minnesota Gophers in Denver this past weekend (5-3 W, 4-3 W O.T.) This weekend the Pioneers travel to Wisconsin to take on the struggling Badgers who are winless in their last four games.
3. North Dakota – (12-10-0, 16-11-2) The University of North Dakota split with the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (3-1 W, 4-5 L). The Fighting Sioux return home to entertain the resurgent MTU Huskies at home this weekend.
4. Minnesota – (15-7-0 WCHA, 19-11-1). The Minnesota Gophers were swept by the Denver Pioneers this past weekend in Denver (3-5 L, 4-5 L O.T.) The Gophers entertain the smoking hot Bemidji State Beavers at Mariucci Arena this weekend.
5 Colorado College – (12-9-1 WCHA, 15-11-2) The Tigers were swept by the Bemidji State Beavers this past weekend in Bemidji (2-4 L, 1-4 L). The Tigers return home to play the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks.
6. Nebraska-Omaha – (10-7-5 WCHA, 13-11-6) The Mavericks took three point against the Michigan Tech Huskies (3-3 T, 4-0 W) in Houghton, Michigan this past weekend. The Mavericks travel to Colorado Springs to play the Tigers this weekend.
Tie – 7. Michigan Tech – (10-9-3 WCHA, 13-14-3) The Michigan Tech Huskies took one point this weekend against the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (3-3 T, 0-4 L). This weekend the Tech Huskies make the trek down highway 2 to play the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux.
Tie – 7. Bemidji State – (9-10-3 WCHA, 15-12-3) The Beavers swept the Colorado College Tigers this past weekend in Bemidji (4-2 W, 4-1 W). This weekend the Beavers travel to Minneapolis to play the Minnesota Gophers. The Beavers are 4-1-1 in their last six games.
9. St. Cloud State – (9-10-3 WCHA, 12-14-4) The Huskies were Idle this past weekend. This weekend the Huskies entertain the Anchorage Alaska Seawolves who have won one game in 11.
10. Wisconsin – (7-13-2 WCHA, 12-14-2) The Wisconsin Badgers were off this past weekend. Ironically, the idle Badgers actually fell to 11th place in the WCHA with the Minnesota State’s sweep of the Seawolves. That being said, the Badgers have two games in hand on the Mavericks and entertain the Denver Pioneers this weekend at the Kohl Center. The Badgers look to break a four game losing streak against the Pioneers.
11. Minnesota State – (8-15-1 WCHA, 12-19-1) The Minnesota State Mavericks swept the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (3-2 W, 2-1 W). This weekend the Mavericks entertain the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in Mankato.
12. Alaska-Anchorage – (4-19-1 WCHA, 7-19-2) The Seawolves were swept by the Minnesota State Mavericks in Anchorage Alaska (2-3 L, 1-2 L). It would be an understatement to say that the Seawolves are struggling as they have lost 10 of 11 games and have one win since December 9th 2011. This weekend the Seawolves travel to Saint Cloud State Huskies.

WCHA Issues One-Game Suspension to Minnesota’s Rau
Official Press Release - February 11, 2012/For Immediate Release
MADISON, Wis. – The men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association today announced a onegame suspension to University of Minnesota hockey player Kyle Rau for his actions in the February 10 game vs the University of Denver.
Rau’s suspension was determined after a review of the incident under the WCHA’s
Supplementary Discipline Policy and Procedures. At the time of the incident, he was assessed a 5:00-major penalty for boarding and a 10:00-game misconduct.
Rau will be required to serve this one-game suspension in his team’s next regularly scheduled game on Saturday, February 11 vs the University of Denver.

My take on the WCHA suspension - I applaud the WCHA for taking this action, lets hope that other players around the league take notice; but lets also hope that these types of hits will no longer be tolerated. This was a dangerous play, Rau was late hitting Zucker and he was in a vulnerable position. These are the types of hits that need to be eliminated from Amateur hockey.
Joe Basaraba Hit On Nick Mattson
s/t to A Tradition of Excellence for sending me the video. UMD Bulldog's Joe Basaraba was given a five minute major and a game misconduct for this hit on the Fighting Sioux's Nick Mattson. Some have said that this hit wasn't worthy of a five and a game but I am not so sure, it's a dangerous hit. Do you think the ref made the right call in this instance?
UND stops UMD 3-1
This is the best that I have seen UND Fighting Sioux hockey team play all season long. True to form they're already seem to be in play off mode. They don't have a lot of room for error but they will be in the tourney if they keep winning games.
The Fighting Sioux didn't give the Bulldogs a lot of great looks and this is how they have to continue to play like, if they want to be successful. It's starts in the defensive zone and it's about grinding out wins, they don't have the fire power to just skate past people but they do have a great back end.
That being said, I think everyone seems to be buying into their roles and the Fighting Sioux are becoming very hard team to play hockey against. That is a trade mark of a Dave Hakstol team. I like the fact that this is one of the more disciplined Fighting Sioux hockey teams that I have seen in some time.

I don’t think anyone is going to want to draw the Fighting Sioux in the WCHA Playoffs and they would be a tough draw in the NCAA playoffs as well.
I thought that UND played good in all three zones of the ice tonight and didn't give the UMD forwards much time and space at all. The Fighting Sioux also didn’t allow the UMD forwards to get behind them very often and when they did the defense was able to recover.
UND was in the shooting lanes and took away the second and third opportunities in front of their net all night long.
One of the things that I thought was a positive was that junior goaltender Aaron Dell was unbelievable all night long and he looks like the goaltender that was an All-American last season.
How good has Dell been against UMD Bulldogs the last two games he has played against them? Dell has stoped 61/62 shots he has faced. Actually, Dell was a 1 minute, 6 seconds away from getting back to back shutouts when J.T. Brown scored the Bulldogs only goal.

So the patented Hakstol surge is upon us, the Fighting Sioux are 12-3-1 the past 16 games. UND is 2-0 against UMD in their new arena and has outscored them 8-1 through six periods of hockey. UND holds a 17-6-2 record their last 25 games against UMD.

Is this hit worthy of a suspension? I don't think so. The video replay isn't that good, so it's hard to tell if Rau hit Zucker with an elbow...

So who is bluffing?
Image via WikipediaHere is a good break down on the latest from the Big Sky Conference and their concerns about UND and the school retaining the Fighting Sioux Nickname by Tom Miller of the Grand Forks Herald. The question is who do you want to believe? Personally, call me crazy if you want, but I don't think the Big Sky Conference is bluffing this time, not like some of the pundits claim they are. My first question, how the hell do they know if the Big Sky is bluffing or not? Have they interviewed the presidents of the Big Sky Conference? I would be willing to bet that they haven't.
Faison also addressed the idea from some nickname supporters that the school’s administration has been misleading in the league affiliation process.
“The Big Sky is a legit concern,” he said. “Whether people want to believe it or not, I can’t help that. I know it. I’ve been in this business 35-plus years, and I’m telling you, we have a problem. And the answers to solve that problem if it goes down are not there. We can’t exist as a Division I independent.
“As far as conspiracy concerns, I leave that with the JFK folks. It’s reality that we are where we are. It’s reality that I’ve talked to Joel Maturi (Minnesota athletic director) and Sean Frazier (Wisconsin deputy athletic director) and we’ve been working on schedules for 2013-14, but that stops because of the nickname and logo. They can’t play us. That’s reality. That’s nothing I’ve made up. That’s been on the books for eight years. We lost a home and home with the University of Iowa in women’s basketball — the opportunity to host a Big Ten team here. This isn’t fiction. This is all real, and we have to deal with reality. That’s my job.”
Faison stressed the importance of competing against men’s hockey rivals Minnesota and Wisconsin.
“I’ve heard from some fans that say it doesn’t matter if we can’t schedule Minnesota,” Faison said. “I look at them incredulously (and say), ‘Really?’ Of course it matters.” [Grand Forks Herald]
Time will tell I guess and I do not want to see the UND athletic department get hurt and suffer. I am alumnus of UND and I have two degrees from this University. I love the Fighting Sioux nickname but the time to fight the NCAA was 2-3 years ago. Where the heck were these people then? Where was Al Carlson back then? Carlson was sitting on his hands doing nothing.
The first team that is going to suffer the wrath of the NCAA is the Women's Hockey team if they end up in the top four. The first round of the NCAA tourney is held at the home arena of the higher seed. UND is close to being in the top four. They win a few more games and you never know where they could end up, they could be right there.
How about the fans, players and family members that follow the UND Women's team.
I have to say that I don't want to watch UND play some non nondescript NAIA or Division II school like Sioux Falls College, Minnesota State University, Moorhead or Minnesota Crookston in football, those match-ups don't excite me, when I know we could be watching Eastern Washtington, the University of Montana and or Montana State in football.

Bruins Tim Thomas uses facebook to communicate views
I think it's funny that some in the Boston sports media want to make a big story about a post that Tim Thomas posted on his personal Facebook page. Sure he's an athlete in the public eye, but he's also an American citizen whose freedom of speech is protected under the first amendment.
If Thomas doesn't want to answer the questions the media people ask him, so be it. I guess the Joe Haggerty's of the world don't like it, but tough.
Personally, I don't have a problem with him making these types of comments in his spare time on his personal Facebook page. Lets just say that there are way more comments in favor of Tim's comments than there are against.
I guess Joe Haggerty doesn't seem to think that Tim Thomas is giving him enough time to answer his questions.
Chris Donovan vs. Evan Trupp
Former Fighting Sioux forward Evan Trupp got into a fight with Utah Grizzlies forward Chris Donovan... I didn't take long to figure out why Trupp got into a fight with Donovan, if you look closely you will see that Donovan slew foots Trupp.
Trupp's not know for his fisticuffs, did pretty well in the fight and his team the Bakersfield Condors beat the Utah Grizzlies 4-0 in the game as well.
In case anyone is wondering Donovan played his college hockey at North Eastern University.
Milan Lucic works Patrick Kaleta like a speed bag
Nothing makes me happier than watching Boston Bruins tough Milan Lucic guy work over a rat like Patrick Kaleta.
Kaleta is one of those players that thinks he is pretty tough when he is out on the taking runs at other teams skilled players. I am actually surprised that Kaleta fought a guy like Milan Lucic.
At the end of the night Kaleta catches the ire of Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid. McQuaid decided he had seen enough of Kaleta's on ice antics and absolutely clobbers the Sabres rat in the head with a monstrous right hand.

Last weekend Tigers took 3-points from the Pioneers in a home-and-home series and the Beavers took 3-points from the UNO Mavericks in Omaha.
The Tigers vaulted over their rivals from Denver in the standings. CC might be riding high after taking care of business last weekend, but they better not be looking past the Beavers. BSU have been good at home in the Sanford Center, boasting a 9-4-1 record in Bemidji. SPLIT

Last weekend the Mavericks got a point at home against the Beavers and the Huskies split with the MSUM Mavericks in Mankato.
These games will be like a playoff series, since they are in a three way tie for the last home ice spots. A pair of losses now for either one can now mean the difference in playing in front of their fans in March or going on the road. The Mavericks are 5-6-2 away from Omaha and the Huskies are 8-4-1 in Houghton this season. The Huskies have been scoring at a 4.7gpg pace since January 1st. But when you get to this time of the season and teams are desperate for points, things happen. I’m going with the home team. HUSKIES SWEEP

Last weekend the Mavericks split with the MTU Huskies in Mankato and the Seawolves split with the Bulldogs in Anchorage.
If the Mavericks sweep this series they pretty much lock the Seawolves into last place. The flip side is if the Seawolves sweep they would be tied with MSUM for 11th place. The Seawolves should have the advantage, being at home last weekend, and MSUM having to travel, way up north. SEAWOLVES SWEEP

Last weekend the Gophers were on a bye weekend and the Pioneers salvaged a point against their arch-rivals, the CC Tigers, in the home/away series.
Before last weekend the Pioneers still had sight of first place, now they need to fight to keep in the top half of the league, my how things can change in one weekend. The Pioneers can reel in the Gophers with a pair of wins this weekend. The Pioneers had been on a five game winning streak until last weekend. The Gophers come in winning their last 3 games and 4 out of their last 5. The Gophers offensive has not been putting up many goals as of late, so if the Pioneers can get some good goaltending and a few breaks they can get some points this weekend. SPLIT
#16 North Dakota @ #2 Minnesota-Duluth
Last weekend Bulldogs split with the Seawolves in Anchorage and North Dakota had bye weekend to rest.
The Bulldogs have struggle their last four games, and have slide out of first place in the WCHA. North Dakota has yet to go on their second half run that has been the norm for them the past seven years under Hakstol. UND needs points this weekend if they want to keep hold of the top half and try and secure home ice. The Bulldogs are pretty much assured of home ice at this point (barring a complete meltdown), but I’m sure they want the McNaughton Cup. SPLIT
