Goon's Takeaways: DU Beats UND 3-2 in OT to Get the Series Split

When the weekend started, many in NoDak would have agreed that a series split with Denver (7-5 W, 3-2 OT L) would've been an acceptable result. The Hawks hadn't swept in Denver for 20 years, and taking 4-of-6 points would be a great result, considering that point. 

Not so fast. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak by UND. In the post-game press conference, the UND players weren't satisfied with taking 4-of-6 points. 

 "They weren't too happy about last night, so we knew they were going to bring it and there were going to be some emotions out there tonight," UND defenseman Keaton Pehrson told the media following Saturday's game. "We expected that."

Here are some of the things that stuck out for me this weekend. After watching both games,  I think it was a good hockey weekend for UND. Obviously, a much better for UND would have been a sweep, but that is a very tall task. You could see the guys were a little tired at the end of the second and third periods. 

The players UND acquired through the NCAA Transfer Portal have paid big dividends through the first half of the season. It's not an understatement to say that junior forward Cameron Berg had a big weekend for UND against the Pioneers. Berg scored three goals on the weekend and five goals in his last four games. That translates to seven points during those four games (4g-3a--7pts). He also has five multi-point games. In 16 games, Berg has scored (7g-9a--16-pts), he's also a plus-seven. Four of Berg's 7 goals have come on the power play. Berg is second in the NCHC in faceoff wins 169-101 (.626). 

Another NCAA Transfer Portal acquisition, Hunter Johannes, has scored (7g-5a--12pts) in 16 games. He is a plus-10. Until Saturday night, he hadn't scored a goal on the road. He finally broke through at the 3:08 mark of the third period.  

Sophomore forward Jackson Blake is on fire. He is on a seven-game scoring streak (5g-7a--12pts). In 16 games, Blake has scored (11g-11a--22pts), which leads UND. He is a plus-six. Blake is tied for fourth in the NCHC in points with 22.  

UND closes out the 2023 part of the schedule this weekend against Colorado College. They play the next six games at home (seven if you count the exhibition game against the U18 team). UND has 20 regular season games, 12 at home and eight on the road. UND is 8-1-1 at home and 4-2 on the road.

Last night in Magness Arena, after the game, when game officials posted the final box score read UND 7 DU 5. It was a tale of two games. UND would score first with a goal from forward Dylan James. Then the momentum would shift, and then it was all Denver as they raced to a 4-1 lead. In the first period, UND looked like deer in the headlights. UND also came out on their heels and a step slow. Maybe a little nervous. UND didn't panic. 

In the second period, UND picked up momentum, got a rhythm, and started chipping away at the Pioneer's 4-1 lead. UND would score six of the last seven goals to beat the Pioneers. I know this sounds cliche, but this game may end up being one for the ages. You can see the highlights below if you didn't watch Friday's game. 

Entering Friday's game against DU, UND goalie Ludvig Persson had played in 12 games, going 1-11-0, 4.69 GAA, and a .879 save percentage, snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Pioneers. The last time Persson had beaten DU was on December 17, 2020, in the pod at Baxter Arena. Persson struggled in the first period, stopping 6/10 shots. He would finish the game with 27 saves on 32 shots.  Persson is now (12-2-1, 2.06 GAA, .917 save percentage). He also has three shutouts. 

With the win, UND is now on an eight-game winning streak. That's the longest in the nation. With the win, UND also vaulted to the top of the Pairwise rankings. Yes, I still think it's too early to worry, but it was mentioned somewhere else.  

UND freshman forward Jayden Perron recorded his first assist of the season. He now has (7g--1a--8pts), he's also a plus-four. 

Sophomore forward Jackson Blake continues to shine; he notched his fifth three-point game of the season, which leads, UND. He's also scored in five straight games; that's a career-high. In 15 games this season, Blake has scored (11g-10a--21pts); he's also a plus-nine. Two of his 11 goals have come on the power play. Blake has six multi-point games this season. That leads UND. In 54 games, Blake has scored (27g-36a--63pts).

After missing four games due to injury, sophomore forward Jake Schmaltz returned to the lineup and added a pair of assists. In 10 games, Schmaltz has recorded six assists and is a plus-one. 

Sophomore forward Owen McLaughlin also recorded three points for the third time this year. In 14 games this season, he's scored (4g-11a--15pts), and he's also a plus-seven. The Spring City, PA., native has recorded four multi-point games this season. McLaughlin has equaled his point total of last season.   

Some in the college hockey world made a big deal about UND using the NCAA Transfer Portal to fill in their roster holes. UND hit the jackpot with junior forward Cameron Berg. The Fargo native now has four multi-point contests in his last seven games.  Speaking of faceoffs, the Hawks finished with a 33-25 advantage over the Pioneers. Berg led the way for UND, going 13-6 (.684).  In 15 games, Berg has (6g-8a--14pts); he's also a plus-seven.

"I get it, they're a high-emotion team," Louis Jamernik V told the Grand Forks Herald following the game. "They can get a little cocky sometimes. We just said, 'All right, we'll match it. If you want to put your stick up in front of our bench, we'll do the same to you.'"

"We knew, and we thought there were going to be growing pains at certain points through the year," DU Head Coach David Carle said. "This hurts; this needs to hurt. We can't forget how this feels and go about it the same way we always do. We'll teach and try and get better."

UND Forward Ben Strinden Checks in at Number Three in NCHC Top 5 Plays of the Week

Last Saturday, in the third period of UND's non-conference tilt against the Bemidji State Beavers, sophomore forward Ben Strinden scored his third goal of the season giving UND a comfortable 3-0 lead. It was a backhand finish, he faked the goalie and put the puck in the net. UND would win the game 5-0, and sweep the Beavers, (3-2 W and 5-0 W). Strinden has really picked up his game and it has shown on the score sheet, too. He's tied for sixth on the team in blocked shots.

   

True to form, in this week's NCHC Top 5 Plays of the week, Miami University's goalie Logan Neaton amazing save against Mercyhurst was fifth in the Top 5 Plays of the Week, and it was hard to see to see his magnificent save, because Maimi's highlight video was blurry. Miami University should be embarrassed for putting out such a substandard product. Think about it. Many of us, including me, reupped our NCHC.TV subscription for $112.00. Is this video worthy of that price? Apparently, they didn't get the memo in Oxford, OH. I've talked about this subject extensively, and in some instances the webcast quality from some member schools hasn't improved.

During the 2023-24 college hockey season, fans who purchase the NCHC's Annual Pass will pay $112.00. In this economy, that is a lot of money. I am not expecting a lot of improvement from the usual suspects that have put out a subpar product. Again, there is supposed to be a minimum standard. I'm betting that Arizona State will have a decent product; if their PAC12 hockey videos are any indication.

Did the Wild’s Kirill Kaprizov Get Away With One?

Last night, the Minnesota Wild won their second game in a row with an impressive 6-1 win against the Nashville Predators. The Wild played like a team possessed. However, there might be an unexpected twist; a Minnesota Wild's star player could be getting a call from the NHL's Department of Players Safety. At the present moment, there hasn't been a call from the NHL's Department of Players Safety, but I wouldn't be shocked if it happened.  

During last night's game, Minnesota Wild forward Kirill Kaprizov might have gotten away with a dirty hit. See the video below. In the first period, Kaprizov hit Predators defenseman Alexandre Carrier in the head when he didn't have the puck. Predators Nation is unhappy with Kirill. 

 "This is exactly what the NHL is trying to get out of the game, Predators Puck Analyst Hall Gill said after the first period. The hits to the head, this is this is embarrassing that this was not a five-minute major. Kaprizov should be out. Carrier doesn't have the puck and he finishes through on his head. 

"This is highly illegal. This is what the NHL has been getting rid of for how many years now? This is old school. I hate to see Carrier going off the ice. It's just such a dirty hit. As a hockey player, you have an obligation to protect someone. If they don't have the puck. You can't hit them. And if they don't have the puck, you certainly can't hit them in the head. The rest should have made this call; this is embarrassing."

"I didn't see the hit but I was talking to the refs, Predators forward Ryan O'Reilly told the Tennessean after the game. They said there was head contact. It should have been reviewed. I asked them to review it. I don't know if they made a mistake or not. Obviously, a dangerous play." As of right now, there's no hearing scheduled, but that doesn't mean the league won't take a look at the hit. If they do, Kaprizov could be in trouble.

As of now, no hearing announced for Kirill Kaprizov, so at least in terms of a suspension, Dept of Player Safety may have decided on nothing or a fine after considering his head contact on Carrier

What's the Difference Between Hathaway's and Smith's Hits?

Tonight in Boston, at the 13:57 mark of the second period, San Jose Sharks forward Givani Smith boarded Brad Marchand, and for his efforts, Smith was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for boarding. Smith wasn't awarded any extra penalty minutes for his extracurricular activity, post-hit. Boston Bruins defenseman Derek Forbort took notice and grabbed Smith. Derek Forbort was assessed a two-minute minor for roughing.

About five minutes later, at the 19:06 mark of the second period, Bruins forward Trent Frederic and Givani Smith engaged in hand-to-hand combat. This was a direct response to Smith's dirty hit on Brad Marchand. Since the on-ice officials aren't going to protect the players, the players will have to take matters into their own hands.

Meanwhile in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the 16:15 mark of the first period, Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway earned himself an early shower with this dirty hit. Why was this a penalty? It was going to be an icing call. When the final box score is posted it will read Garnet Hathaway Boarding against Luke Hughes, five-minute major, and a game misconduct. I wonder if he will get a call from the NHL's Department of Player Safety. Probably not.

UND Football: Should We Be Satisfied Just Making the Playoffs?

Yesterday, like many UND football fans, I watched UND play in the first round of the NCAA FCS Football Playoffs. It wasn't a positive experience. I watched the Sacramento State Hornets rack up 216 yards of offense and score 14 points in the first quarter. The Hornets ran through UND's defense like they were standing still. They marched 75 yards in the opening drive and never looked back. The Hornets were 8-10 (.800) on third down. When the final horn sounded, the Hornets finished the game with 244 yards rushing and 212 yards passing for a total offensive yardage of 456. Even if you're not a great football mind, you know that could be better. 

We didn't see the Sac State punter till the second half of the game. I am not sure that he even needed to shower after the game. He only punted twice. Just for the record, his name is Carl McGough, and he's number 91. 

Final Score: 42-35 Hornets. Ugh! But hey, the Hawks beat the Bison. 

My thoughts post-debacle: fans have the right to be angry and hot. This football team is going to have excellent locker room facilities. They already have an indoor training facility and a decent stadium. Is there any reason we can't expect something resembling a winning program? Right now, we have a mediocre program. I know, I know, I know, we made the FCS Playoffs. 

Fast forward to this morning: I still have that foul taste in my mouth. You can't put sprinkles on this. There needs to be some accountability. 

Reading my favorite hometown newspaper this morning, I found this gem from Brad E. Schlossman. I liked what Brad had to say, "But if UND wants to make a deep run, it has to make significant improvements on defense.

The question we need to ask is: Is UND football going to be satisfied with just making the playoffs and ending most seasons going 7-5, or does the university want to go bigger? Many fans that I have talked to want the bar to be moved higher. If that's the case, changes are needed. First, you have to change the mindset and culture. UND was 1-4 on the road this season; that has to change. Good enough isn't good enough anymore. 

Traditionally, the Hawks have been hard to beat at the Alerus until yesterday. Against the Hornets, the Alerus Center looked like a house of horrors. It was painful to watch. 

Second, UND football has hit its ceiling. Where do we go from here? Our friends to the south are laughing at us. Yes, the Hawks clobbered the Bison 49-24 on October 14, 2023. That was the season's high point; they went out the next week and laid an egg against an OK UNI team 27-0. The reality is UND's season is over, and the Bison are moving on to the second round of the FCS Playoffs. Wins in October don't mean anything if you can't win in November. 

Since moving to FCS Division I football, the Hawks own an awful 1-5 record in the FCS playoffs. In 10 seasons, Bubba Schweigert is 61-50 (.549). His team won nine games once, in 2016. At home, they were quickly dispatched in the FCS Playoffs by the Richmond Spiders 27-24. In addition, his teams have won seven games four times. Is that good enough? It wouldn't be in hockey. Some in the fanbase wanted the UND AD to fire head coach Brad Berry after last season. Look at the remarkable recovery his team made in 2023. 

I don't want to hear that UND football doesn't have enough shiny objects for recruits; they have a shiny new indoor training facility known as the  Frederick "Fritz" D. Pollard Jr. Athletic Center. Phase two is going to be completed soon.

Finally, now that the season is over, there must be a discussion. Someone needs to feel the heat. Someone's seat needs to be getting hotter. There needs to be some accountability cause many in Hawks Nation aren't happy. Where do we go from here? That could be a discussion for the big-money donors. 

Goon's Takeaways: UND Sweeps BSU 5-0

On Saturday night, the University of North Dakota hockey team beat the Bemidji State Beavers 5-0 to win their seventh game in a row. They also completed their third sweep in a row to improve to 11-2-1 (.821), (4-0-0 NCHC). Next weekend, the Fighting Hawks travel to Denver to take on the Pioneers. 

Barring any unforeseen events, UND will remain the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Not that it matters. While it's probably too early, UND is ranked 6th in the Pairwise Rankings. No, I will not be doing any silly Bracketology posts. UND has played 10 non-conference games this season and has a 7-2-1 (.750) record. 

Sophomore forward Dane Montgomery scored his first goal of the year. Assists Griffin Ness and Bennett Zmolek. That was Montgomery's second career goal and first one at Ralph Engelstad Arena. On the lineup sheet, Montgomery was listed as the extra forward, but he ended up playing instead of freshman forward Michael Emerson.

Ludvig Persson was fantastic in the net and made this beautiful save in the first period. Perrson would end the night with a 29-save shutout, his third of the season. Perrson is 11-2-1 with a 1.85 GAA and a .924 save percentage. Persson's three shutouts are tied with Dominic Basse and Freddie Halyk.

At the 5:13 mark of the second period, UND would finally score on the power play with this goal by Jackson Blake. Assists Jake Livanavage and Cameron Berg. That was Blake's 10th goal of the season.

One minute later, Jackson Kunz would score his first goal of the season to give UND a 4-0 lead. Assists Logan Britt, Ludvig Persson. That was Persson's first point of his collegiate career.

• Jackson Blake has made a huge impact in his short time at UND. In 52 games, he's scored (25g-33a--58pts), and he's also a plus-seven. Seven of his 25 goals have been scored on the power play. 
• Blake has five multi-point games that leads UND. Riese Gaber has four. 
• Gaber (7g-6a--13pts) was held to one point on the weekend. 
• UND has a record of 37-5-7 all-time against Bemidji State., The Hawks are 26-3-4 against the Beavers in Grand Forks. 
• UND has won seven straight games for the first time since 2021-22. This is also the best start for UND since the 2019-20 season. 

NHL Inconsistency in Calling Penalties

I know it's easy to pick on the on-ice officials, but how does this hit by Florida Panthers Anton Lundell go uncalled? This should've been a major penalty and a game misconduct. Exhibit A: It's a vicious cross-check of Matthew Poitras's/head area. There was no call on the play.

Meanwhile, exhibit B: Colorado Avalanche defenseman Josh Manson Cross-checking against Vancouver Canucks forward Brock Boeser. From the video, it looks like Boeser embellished the hit. Watching the video, I still haven't seen an explanation of why Lundell was not penalized. Some might make the argument that a hearing from the Department of Player Safety could've been warranted.

Goon's Takeaways; Game One: UND Beats BSU 3-2 in OT

The University of North Dakota hockey team kicked off their Thanksgiving weekend with a non-conference tilt with the Bemidji State University Beavers. 

Statistically, entering the weekend, this looked like a series that could be very one-sided. BSU entered Friday's game with the worst penalty kill in college hockey at 65.8 percent. The Beavers goaltending had also played poorly during the first 12 games of the season as they entered the game with the worst save percentage in college hockey. 

 Looking at the stats, you would think the UND hockey team would be licking their lips with the prospect of filling the Beaver goal with pucks. Through two periods, the game played out differently. 

None of this mattered; hockey is played on the ice and not on paper. The Hawks came out of the gates a step slow, looking like they were feeling the effects of a big Thanksgiving hangover. The Beavers beat them to pucks and kept them on their heels. 

Forward Kasper Magnussen gave the Beavers a quick 1-0 lead 1:19 into the first period. Assist Lleyton Roed and Carter Jones.

Forward Jackson Jutting would score the Beavers second goal at the 17:30 mark of the first period to give them a 2-0 lead.

Berg would score his second goal of the year to tie the game at 2-2. Berg took a pass from Hunter Johanness and shot from above the right faceoff circle. With his two goals, Berg doubled his season goal total. He now has four goals on the season.

Jackson Blake scores the game-winning goal 50 seconds into Overtime to give UND a 3-2 win. Assists Jake Livanavage and Owen McLaughlin. UND has played in three overtime games and has a 2-0-1 record. Blake has scored both of UND's game-winning goals. Both overtimes combined lasted a minute and 10 seconds.

Video evidence confirms that the game-winning goal was offside. BSU didn't challenge the play. With the win, UND improved to 10-2-1 (.807), with the loss, BSU dropped to 5-8-0.

UND Ranked No. 1 in USCHO and USA Today Poll

Earlier today, I tweeted: These polls are fun to read but really meaningless. How many other games did the voters actually watch? 

The only poll that matters is the final Pairwise Ranking on Selection Sunday. Polls are fun to read. During the first six weeks of the season, there were four teams ranked No. 1: BU, BC, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. All four of those teams are really good. To some teams, the No. 1 Ranking can be a curse. 

There could be a new number one next week. According to Schloss, the last time UND was ranked No.1 was March 22, 2021, when it held the top spot heading into the NCAA tournament.  

 

Flyers Bobby Brink Scores After Three-Game Hiatus

Philadelphia Flyers rookie Bobby Brink was a healthy scratch for the past three games. On Sunday, he returned to the Flyers lineup and made the most of his opportunity.

Bobby Brink will be a healthy scratch Saturday. John Tortorella wants to get him back in, but also wants to be fair to his team as it’s on a three-game win streak.

Tortorella reiterated Flyers will balance winning and development of young players all season.

At the 1:05 mark of the second period, Columbus Bluejackets forward Kirill Marchenko was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for tripping Flyers defenseman Travis Sanheim. The Flyers wasted no time; six seconds into the power play, Brink would score his 4th goal of the season to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.  For those keeping track at home, that's his fourth goal of the season.

The University of North Dakota Hockey team completed the weekend sweep of the Miami University RedHawks with a 5-1 victory. Here's my rundown from the two-game conference sweep. With the 4-0-0 start in conference play, UND is sitting in second place in the NCHC standings. UND is currently on a five-game winning streak outscoring their opponents 22-11. 

The captain Riese Gaber would get UND on the board first with this beautiful goal at the 8:27 mark of the first period. Assists Garrett Pyke and Louis Jamernik V. That was goal number six on the year for Gaber. In the post-game press conference, Riese Gaber could barely speak and it was later revealed by head coach Brad Berry that he was under the weather. His linemate, Owen McLaughlin sat out Saturday night's game with an illness.

Just a short 2:29 later, the RedHawks would answer the Hawks goal with a goal from PJ Fletcher. Miami forward Max Dukovac with the lone assist. That was all of the scoring for Miami, Ludvig Persson would stand strong in the net and lead UND to a 5-1 Victory. (This past weekend, Miami didn't post their goal videos on their X page.)

Miami evening the score didn't deter UND's scoring. The Hawks seemed to find another gear and went to work. At the 14:52 mark of the first period, UND forward Griffin Ness scored his first goal of the year with the help of RedHawks forward John Waldron who deflected Ness's shot into his own net. That would prove to be the game-winning goal. Jackson Kunz, and Dane Montgomery would get the assists. That was Montgomery's first point of the year. 

After Ness's goal, I tweeted this out: For some reason, I thought of the song, "I get by with a little help from my friends" seemed appropriate. Griffin Ness scores his first goal of the year.

Gaber would score his second goal of the game with a beautiful breakaway goal to pad UND's lead. For those keeping track at home, that was goal number seven on the year. Gaber now has (7g-5a--12pts) on the season, with his two makers on Saturday, Gaber now has (53g-54a--107pts) for his career.

Not to be outdone, Jackson Blake would score his 8th goal of the year 4.4 seconds remaining in the first period. Blake would also draw a penalty on the play. It was similar to Gaber's goal. Blake would pick up a loose puck off a RedHawk's turnover in the neutral zone and break in score on the RedHawks goalie Logan Neaton.

There was not scoring in the second period and Miami would make a push. The RedHawks outshot the Hawks 8-3. UND goalie Ludvig Persson was stellar between the pipes stopping grade A chances. Exhibit A, Persson stones Matthew Barbolini to preserve UND's 4-1 lead.

Persson's teammates might want to take him out for supper after the game. He was stellar. He's stopped 21-of-22 shots, and a few of them were tough saves. Jaden Perron would score the Hawks fifth goal of the game with a beautiful shot from the slot.

 I know it's early, and I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I think Virg Foss is onto something. This team is very good, and has all the pieces to go deep into the NCAA playoffs. Yes, anything can happen in a one-and-done tourney. This team is significantly better than last year's team. Defense and goaltending are noticeably better. The forward group is better with the additions of Cameron Berg, Hunter Johannes, and Jayden Perron. This "could' end up being a special year.

Earlier today, I tweeted that senior forward Carson Albrecht had gone 37 games without being penalized. Looking at the stats, he hadn't been assessed a penalty since March 12, 2022. On Saturday, Albrecht was assessed two minor penalties. I may want to hold off praising players for individual efforts in the future.

Did the Anaheim Ducks Get Hosed?

I watched this game before I went to bed last night, and I feel that the Anaheim Ducks scored a goal on the wrap-around. They showed the video, and the puck appeared to have crossed the line. After review, it was deemed no goal. As @ScoutingTheRefs says, the call came from Toronto. I know it's easier to ref from your chair in your living room than on the ice, but this appears to be a blown call. Feel free to chime in, the comments are open. 

Anaheim appeared to tie the game a few moments later when Silfverberg beat Stolarz with a wraparound inside the post, but despite the puck appearing to be completely over the line, the goal was nullified upon review. (link)

UND Beats Miami 6-4 in Game One

The University of North Dakota hockey team opened their conference schedule at home with a 6-4 win against the Miami RedHawks. 

UND Scored two in the first period, three in the second period and one in the third period. At the 11:59 mark of the first period, graduate forward Hunter Johannes would get UND on the board with this beautful goal from the top of the circles. That was goal number six of the year. Assists Cameron Berg and Jackson Blake.

At the 14:32 mark of the first period, freshman forward Jayden Perron would give UND a 2-0 lead with his sixth goal of the seasons. Assists by Hunter Johannes, Cameron Berg. Perron has yet to record an assist, he has 6 goals in 11 games. Johannes now has two multi-point games on the season. Last season, he has seven multi-point games with Lindenwood.

Miami would get two quick goals less than a minutes apart by PJ Fletcher, and Matthew Barbolini. Unfortunately, the RedHawks didn't post the goals on their Twitter page.

At the 12:42 mark of the second period, UND would take a two goal lead with a goal from Jackson Blake. The RedHawks would challenge the goal for a handpass, but the goal would stand.

Less than two minutes later, senior forward Carson Albrecht assist Owen McLaughlin. In the pregame, I was talking to Virg Foss and he said that Albrecht was going to score tonight. He's also add an assist later in the game.

UND didn't take long to open the scoring in the third period. Seven seconds in sophomore forward Dylan James would give UND a 6-2 lead. That would close out the scoring or UND. Albrecht would pick up the assist.

Miami would scored to goals in the final two minutes of the game to make the score 6-4.

Don't Let Them Fool You, The Ralph is the Best

UND hockey fans have been saying this since October 5, 2001. To some, this has to be one of the silliest Twitter arguments to date. Some of us might be biased, but the Ralph Engelstad Arena is the top facility in all of college hockey if not all of hockey.  You can chime in below if you want.

Luke Loheit's Hit on Jake Schmaltz

This is the hit that took out UND Forward Jake Schmaltz. With approximately 1:36 remaining in the second period, UMD forward Luke Loheit injured Schmaltz with this dangerous hit. The ref watched the whole thing and decided not to call a penalty. That was par for this past weekend's series. I felt that Nathan Wieler and Ryan Hersey had a rough series wearing the stripes and frankly should have a vacation this weekend. 

Depending on what fanbase you're from, I am sure someone will make the argument that this hit was a legal, hard hit. After the game, UND head coach Brad Berry said Schmaltz was day-to-day. s/t to Blackheart of Sioux Sports.

Kuraly Hit on Lindgren

Did someone say big hit? At the 1:30 mark of the third period, Columbus Blue Jackets forward Sean Kuraly boarded New York Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren. Rangers forward Nick Bonino stepped in and challenged Kuraly to a fight. Kuraly was initially assessed a five-minute major penalty for boarding. After a video review by the officials, the major penalty was reduced to a two-minute penalty. Kuraly and Bonino were assessed a two-minute minor for roughing. Some have suggested that Kuraly could be suspended for this, but I don't think this will be worthy of a suspension. Granted, it was a heavy hit.

UND Hockey: UND Sweeps UMD With 2-0 Win

The UND hockey team started the National Collegiate Hockey Conference schedule on the right foot by sweeping the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (4-2 W, 2-0 W) at Amsoil Arena. Saturday night, UND played disciplined hockey, taking two minor penalties and only giving the Bulldogs third-ranked power play one opportunity. 

Saturday's game was a typical NCHC conference matchup. It was a meat grinder. There was some heavy hitting and not a lot of room to roam. I thought UND's defense limited the Bulldogs offensive opportunities and they didn't get a lot of good looks. When the Bulldogs were able to get a shot on net, Ludvig Persson was solid in the net. 

Speaking of the Persson. In 10 games, Persson has a (7-2-1 record, 1.90 GAA, and a .925 save percentage). He also has two shutouts. He's also been the NCHC goalie of the week three times. He was also the NCHC goaltender of the month for October. 

Saturday, there wasn't a lot of scoring, but it was enough to send the Hawks back down Highway 2 with smiles on their faces. Love the Tweet from the UND SID Alec Johnson.

Senior forward Louis Jamernik V had a pretty good weekend for UND. He scored his first and second goals of the season against the Bulldogs. Saturday, Jamernick scored his second goal of the year at the 7:38 mark of the first period. That was also his first power play marker of the year. Jamernik has now scored in three straight games against the Bulldogs.

Perusing social media and the message boards, some have said that Riese Gaber has taken a step back this year. Gaber put all of that to bed with his fifth goal of the season. His goal gave UND a 2-0 lead. On Saturday, Gaber had his third multi-point game of the season.

Controversial Call Late? 

With 4:06 remaining in the game, UMD Darian Gotz was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for contact to the head. Many in the Bulldog fanbase and the UMD hockey media disagreed with the call. You can watch the video below and decide for yourself.

UMD winless in its last six games (0-5-1).

The explanation given to the News Tribune by the NCHC was Gotz’s elbow extended and made contact with the chin of Johannes. Sandelin said he was told by the officials the review was “definitive.”

You can look at the video and decide for yourself. If your team is trying to get back into the game, don't make that play. It was unnecessary and ended up hurting the Bulldogs in the end.

This team is a lot more confident than last season. There's a very different attitude in the UND locker room this season. To quote Brad Elliot Schlossman, "This team is pretty good." I would agree, defensively and offensively. 

"We're a confident group," Gaber told the media after the game. "We've got a lot of weapons. We showed that this weekend. We're just going to keep going and doing our thing."

All you have to do is look at the stats to see this team is doing a lot better on the ice.  It starts with the defense and goaltending. 

UND is ranked 7th nationally in save percentage .922, and 11th in goals against. Through ten games, UND is the top-ranked defensive team in the NCHC. Again, yes, it's early. 

They're playing more disciplined, they're 15th nationally in Penalty Minutes. They're ranked 3rd nationally in shorthanded goals scored.

Speaking of things that make me smile, I re-read Bruce Ciskie's pre-season predictions and it seems he underestimated the UND hockey team. I know it's early, but the eight D-men in question have performed pretty well against a really tough schedule. 

In four games against UND, Grand Forks native Cole Spicer has yet to record a point against the hometown team. Obviously, he's got a few more kicks at the can, but it's something that I noticed. 

UND has won five straight games at Amsoil Arena. That's a feat that hasn't been accomplished since November 29, 1968. 

UND Beats UMD 4-2 In Duluth (Highlights)

The fourth-ranked University of North Dakota hockey team began their NCHC conference schedule on the road at 18th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth. Entering Friday's game, the Hawks had a 4-2-0 in the last six games against the Bulldogs. Recently, UND has experienced some success at Amsoil Arena winning three straight games.  

At the 9:03 mark of the first period, Jayden Perron would give UND a 1-0 lead. Assists Cameron Berg and Hunter Johannes. That was Johannes's first assist of the season.

At the 11:06 mark of the first period, UND would take a 2-0 lead with a goal from d-man Logan Britt forwards Owen McLaughlin and Bennett Zmolek picked up assists on the goal. That's goal number two for Britt.

At the 18:03 mark of the first period, senior forward Louis Jamernik V would give UND a comfortable 3-0 lead with this beautiful goal. Jackson Kunz with the assist. The Bulldogs would challenge the goal for a high stick but were unsuccessful.

UMD would finally get on the board at the 12:13 mark of the second period, Bulldog forward Luke Loheit would score a power play marker to cut into UND's lead.  That was goal number three for the graduate forward. Assists, Quinn Olson and Ben Steeves. Score 3-1 UND.

At the 14:54 mark of the third period, UND was on the power play, and UMD forward Cole Spicer had a chance to score shorthanded, but he was denied by senior UND goalie Ludvig Perrson. This would prove to be a big-time game-saving stop.

The Bulldogs would make things interesting. At the 14:44 mark of the third period, Anthony Menghini scored his third goal of the year to cut UND's lead to 3-2. Assists, Joey Pierce, and Aaron Pionk.  It was definitely a lucky bounce, a UND defenseman blocked a shot and it ended up on the Bulldog player's stick, and ended up in the back of the UND net. Score 3-2 UND.

UND would get a power play in the waning seconds of the game, and UND would smartly cash in. At the 19:21 mark of the third period, UND forward Cameron Berg would ice the game with an unassisted power play goal. Final Score: UND 4 UMD 2. 

While UND might have let the Bulldogs back into the game, they were able to gut out the win. It wasn't pretty, but it's still a win and a great start to NCHC play. UND has now won four straight games at Amsoil Arena.
