OXFORD, Ohio – Coming on the heels of a Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season championship and an NCAA Tournament berth, Miami University Director of Athletics David Sayler announced Monday that head hockey coach Enrico Blasi has signed a new 10-year contract that will keep him at the helm of the RedHawks through the 2022-23 season. Blasi’s original contract expired after the 2016-17 season as the new deal provides another six-year extension.In 14 seasons with the Miami RedHawks, Blasi has compiled an impressive record 311-196-53 (.602). This past season, Blasi’s team also won the regular season CCHA title in final season of the historic CCHA.

Miami's Blasi Inks New 10-Year Contract with Miami
Looks like the Miami RedHawks don’t want to take a risk at losing their head coach Enrico Blasi and have signed him to a new 10-year contract. Looking forward, with all of the instability in college hockey recently surrounding the head coachs, three have been fired in the last month, this is probably is a smart move by Miami RedHawks. Miami along with seven other teams (C.C., DU, SCSU, UNO, UMD, UND, WMU) begin play in the new NCHC, during the 2013-14 season.

UND recruit Adam Tambellini’s team the Surrey Eagles won the BCHL championship as they beat the Penticton Vees 3-2 in overtime of game six.
Incidentally, the Vees are the junior team of UND recruit, forward Wade Murphy.

The 2012-13 line on Adam Tambellini regular season stats (36g-29a—65pts) in 52 games. Tambelini followed his strong regular season scoring (10g-8a—18pts) in 17 playoff games, which is good for 3rd place among the BCHL playoff scoring leaders. Earlier this season, Tambelini was traded from the Vernon Vipers to the Surrey Eagles.
Penticton Vees forward Wade Murphy had a strong season for the Penticton Vees scoring (23g-47a—70pts) in 50 games and (5g-6a—11pts) in 15 playoff games, which is good for 11th place among the BCHL playoff scoring leaders.

Kyle Okposo will not be suspended for his hit on Zach Bogosian
According to Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun, Islanders forward Kyle Okposo's shoulder to head hit on Winnipeg Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian was reviewed by the NHL's Department of Player Safety and there will be no supplemental discipline. Nor should there be, in my opinion. It's doesn't look like Okposo targeted Bogosian's head.
There is also some question if Bogosian suffered a concussion on the play. I wondered about that too, since Bogosian challenged Okposo to a fight later on in the game, so we will see. No one wants to see a person get hurt.
I can say with confidence, that Bogosian is not going to get "a lot" of empathy from Wild fans, especially after he buried Wild forward Pierre-Marc Bouchard last December and escaped supplemental discipline on the play. Bouchard missed the final 41 games of the regular season with a concussion, as a result of the Bogosian hit.

Jack Edwards blasts Matt Cooke and then apologizes for it; also, Cooke hit on Adam McQuaid
So, I ask you. What is wrong with Jack Edward's comments? "Nominating Cooke for the Masterton is about the equivalent of nominating Sirhan Sirhan as the prisoner of the year," Edwards said.
Personally, I don't have a problem with those comments. Cooke is a reckless, dirty and dangerous player, who is responsible for many random, bush league acts on the ice over many years. Matt Cooke has been suspended multiple times, totaling 35 games (if my math is correct), by the NHL and is responsible for ending Marc Savard's hockey career.
Later in the game, Cooke took a run and connected with Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid. True to form, Cooke turtled when he was challenged to a fight by Zdeno Chara. I don't have a problem with the hit, but when your Matt Cooke, you should expect to drop the gloves and fight based on the type of players that you're. Cooke has earned that reputation and I like many, hold him in a very low regard. We keep hearing about how Cooke's changed.
Right! I also don't care what he does off of the ice.
After the game, Boston Bruins head coach Claud Julien wasn't happy with the hit by Cooke. “It’s pretty obvious that it’s a cheap shot from Cooke,” Julien said. “The typical, same guy. He’s gotta go low and getting a guy right around the knee area and turns his back.”

This morning, I was reading the Grand Forks Herald, when I came across another great article; Change may-or may not-be coming for college hockey, written by Hall of Fame sports writer Virg Foss. Check it out.
Virg Foss, Grand Forks Herald — Of course more change is already upon us as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association as we’ve known it all our lives breaks apart.As Minnesota and Wisconsin head to the Big Ten and North Dakota, Duluth, St. Cloud State, Colorado College and Denver land in the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference, more change is coming, like it or not.We’re already seen that college hockey’s most intense rivalry, that of North Dakota and Minnesota, won’t continue on a yearly basis, at least as long as Don Lucia is coaching the Gophers.It’s Lucia’s decision to limit that rivalry, against the expressed wishes of past and current UND and Gopher players and fans of all ages. It’s a decision I do not understand and for reasons given by Lucia that are questionable at best.
I am with Virg, I’ve never really understood, why one team would kill a very popular and lucrative college hockey rivalry, but maybe college hockey will go on without it. I am sure that Ohio State and Penn State will fill the void though. Yeah right! This past spring, when it seemed like there might be a chance to have a mulligan on this historic series, the hockey God’s didn’t allow the rivalry to happen, so maybe it wasn’t meant to be.
Maybe it’s time that we embrace change?
I am almost certain, that Miami and Western Michigan fans will soon hate the team from the University of North Dakota with no-name. Probably, after the second time, the two teams play on the ice.
Moving forward.
After watching 2012-13 college hockey season, nothing really made sense this season. The traditional “sexy” teams (Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, North Dakota, Boston College, Boston University) weren’t in the Frozen Four. ECAC teams Yale and Quinnipiac proved that you don’t have to have a roster full of NHL first round draft choices to win the NCAA title either.
That doesn’t mean that these teams didn’t have talent, because they had some great talent. Yale had talented guys that bought into a system and played a great team game. Yale was a miserable team to play against, defensively. Yale also got hot at the right time and was the best team for the last four games of the season, when it mattered the most.
The list of teams the Yale Bulldogs beat was impressive, because they beat some of the best teams in the country, to win the NCAA title, erasing any doubts who the best team in the country was.
During that time frame, the Yale Bulldogs took down Minnesota no. 1 seed, North Dakota no. 2 seed, UMass-Lowell no. 1 seed and Quinnipiac no. 1 overall seed. That’s a pretty good hockey resume, it also proved that their season wasn’t a fluke. If you’re still not a believer, Yale also went 4-0 against the WCHA, a league that sent six teams to the NCAA tourney.
What has happened is the college hockey world has changed, the other schools have found a way to persevere and they overcome some of the self-perceived advantages that the bigger schools thought they had. Apparently big television contracts and cathedrals posing as hockey arena’s doesn’t always equate to wins and NCAA titles.
Maybe these teams flew under the radar a bit, while other teams were patting themselves on the back. That being said, the rest of the college hockey world was put back on notice last weekend. There are no gimmes in college hockey, not any more.
Finally, I think what also caught people’s eye, was Yale head coach Keith Allain celebrating a win with his team and enjoying the moment.

ASSOCIATED PRESS --- St. Cloud State will rename its hockey arena after Herb Brooks, the coach who guided the United States Olympic team to a gold medal in 1980. He also helped lead the St. Cloud State men’s hockey team’s move to N.C.A.A. Division I. Brooks died in an automobile accident in 2003.According to the Saint Cloud Times, the National Hockey Center will be renamed the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Brandon Dubinsky's "Match Penalty" Rescinded by the NHL
When I first watched this video, I didn't catch Drew Doughty sucker punching Brandon Dubinsky in the back of the head, so in my opinion, it's the right decision by the NHL.

The game has been tentatively rescheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, at TD Garden beginning at 12:30 p.m., Eastern time. The game's status will be formalized no later than 8:30 a.m.
The game between the Penguins and Buffalo Sabres, scheduled for Saturday night in Pittsburgh, has been moved to Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m., ET.
End game scrum in Columbus Blue Jackets vs Los Angeles Kings, Jackets Brandon Dubinsky assessed a match penalty
This was the end of the game between the Kings and the Blue Jackets. Blue Jackets Brandon Dubinsky assessed a match penalty and is suspended by the NHL until he has a hearing with the NHL's Department of Players Safety, there could be a Shanaban coming soon for Dubinsky. Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch tells us why.
At the end of the game, as dance partners began to pair up, Dubinsky came up from behind on Kings defenseman Robyn Regehr behind the Kings net. Doughty approached from behind and through a right-hand puck at Dubinsky, which appeared to hit the mark. Dubinsky turned a charged after Doughty, who ducked and covered in front of the empty Los Angeles net.Who knows how long of a suspension Brandon Dubinsky will get, but we know that his antics at the end of the game are outside the hockey code, he sucker punched someone. Dubinsky is also the Blue Jackets player that jumped Charlie Coyle after his clean hit on Artem Anisimov.
"Just a cheap shot, and that's his personality," Kings forward Kyle Clifford said of Dubinsky. "We've got guys out there and he goes after Doughty, who is not our toughest player."
David Backes blasts Ekman-Larsson from behind
This is one of the hits in the NHL last night, that got a little bit of scrutiny, St. Blues forward David Backes blasts Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Ekman-Larsson from behind. Backes received a two minute penalty for boarding on the play.
This is a dangerous hit, these are the types of hits that the NHL is trying to remove from the game of hockey. I can't believe that Backes was the only one that got a penalty out of the scrum. It also appears, that the hit on Ekman-Larsson was in retaliation for a hit earlier in the game, that went uncalled.

Kings activate defenseman Matt Greene off injured reserve
NHL.COM --- The Los Angeles Kings have activated defenseman Matt Greene from the injured reserve list.
Greene, 29, missed the last 42 games after suffering a mid-body injury in the season opener Jan. 19 against the Chicago Blackhawks.
The 6-3, 232 pound native of Grand Ledge, Mich., played in all 82 regular season games and 20 postseason contests last season as the Kings won the franchise's first Stanley Cup.

NHL plans six outdoor games next season, report says
Seriously!
There are going to be a grand total of six outdoor games. Talk about an overkill.
Personally, I think there comes a time when the NHL has overdone the outdoor game, this might be an instance of this. How many outdoor games do we need to have during the course of a season? I also think the outdoor game can be a bit of a crap shoot with the weather, one of these game is almost assured of having disastrous ice conditions. Lastly, I think that the outdoor games are a gimmick as well. Really, the frozen pond in California? Make sure to throw the palm trees in for good measure.
Kevin Cusick, Pioneer Press --- TSN, Canada's version of ESPN, is reporting that the league is planning five outdoor games in addition to the Jan. 1 Winter Classic previously announced for the University of Michigan's Big House."Here's the schedule that the NHL is proposing for the 2013-14 season.
"They're still ironing out a few of the wrinkles," reporter Darren Dreger said on TSN's "Insider Trading" program. "Contracts haven't been signed. But that's the grand plan."
