Interesting comments from Brendan Shannahan

Boston Bruins bench
Boston Bruins bench (Photo credit: slidingsideways)
I find it funny that Brendan Shannahan felt the need to comment on this situation, there is perception around the league that certain teams aren't going to get a fair shake because of his bias against those teams. Whether it's deserved or not, it's a perception that is out there. As a Wild and Bruins fan, I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that I have seen things that are questionable and grounds for scrutiny.

Just today the NHL suspended Tyler Meyers for a very similar hit that went unpunished this season, more specifically, these were some of the same kind of hits that the Wild and Bruins players were a victim of but no punishment was levied to the perpetrator. There seems to be one set of rules for Stars and a different set of rules for the goons and third and forth line players.

D.J. Bean, WEEI --- As for the Bruins in general, Shanahan responded to the idea that he has a bias against the B’s when it comes to suspensions. Marchand, Milan Lucic and Andrew Ference have all been suspended this season for various infractions.

“It’s funny, people in Boston might think I have something against the Bruins, which is so absurd and crazy,” he said. “It makes you feel any better I can promise you all I have to do is flip on my Twitter page, or if I ever wanted to venture onto the internet, almost every team in the league thinks there a specific reason I hate their market and hate their city as well.

“I have to defend why I don’t hate Pittsburgh, or why I don’t hate Montreal, or why I don’t hate Buffalo, or why I don’t hate Minnesota. For Boston, it’s even more absurd, quite honestly. Talk about a team I grew up admiring. Cam Neely is probably the one player I tried to model my game after more than anybody. It doesn’t matter if it’s a team you grew up admiring, or a team you played for, there’s so much scrutiny in this job, you can do this job and you can’t sleep at night, if you don’t do it with as much integrity as possible. That doesn’t mean you’re perfect. You would love to have a perfect season in sports. You can objectively look at this hit and disagree with the assessment, and that’s fair. That’s always going to be fair. But it’s absurd to suggest in any market that we have a grudge or have it in against anybody.”

Shawn Thornton vs. Mike Commodore

In this situation, former Fighting Sioux and current Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mike Commodore didn't really need to fight Boston Bruins tough guy Shawn Thornton. I guess some guys will do whatever it takes to make the team or stay on a team.

"Some" GM's want to reinstate the center-ice red line in an attempt to curb concussions.

This is a horrible idea, it would slow down the game and make the game of hockey less exciting to watch because it would cause more whistles and stoppages.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP)----The GMs began three days of meetings Monday. Several have said they would like to see the red line and two-line passes return in an effort to slow the game in the neutral zone, which might reduce the rate of concussions by making collisions less violent.

There is opposition, however, with many arguing that the removal of the red line in 2005 made the game more entertaining.

''We're looking at ways to make the game safer without taking away the physical nature of the sport,'' Minnesota Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher said. ''It's a balance you're always trying to strike.'

Malkin not disciplined

Another questionable hit on a Boston Bruins by a Pittsburgh Penguin and another Penguin escapes punishment by the NHL. So basically, don't expect a player to get suspended if they hit a Boston Bruin with a questionable hit.

I could see how Boston Bruins fans might question the NHL and their judgement. Also, I think that Brendan Shanahan is basically a fraud and no better than Colin Campbell, there are one set of rules for star players and there is another set of rules for tough guys and goons. One could also make the argument that, if Milan Lucic or Brad Marchand had hit Malkin or Sidney Crosby with a hit like this, they would've been suspended or at least fined by the NHL.
Mike Cole, NESN --- The Bruins have been the victim of some suspect hits over the years in Pittsburgh, and once again, the league has allowed the Penguins to skate without punishment.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the league will not discipline Pens star Evgeni Malkin for his hit on Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk which came in the third period of the Penguins' 5-2 win over Boston on Sunday.

While the hit was not nearly as bad as the hit Matt Cooke leveled Bruins center Marc Savard with two years ago, there were some that thought Malkin would be looking at least a fine.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

This year’s tournament format is the same as it was last year, we have 6 teams, we have two play-in games on Thursday, two semi-finals on Friday and the championship game on Saturday evening.

Every team in St. Paul has a chance at the Broadmoor Championship and the NCAA auto-bid to the tournament. UMD and UM are all but guaranteed a spot in the NCAA tournament, DU and UND should be okay, as long as they win on Thursday. MTU and SCSU need to pretty much win the Final Five if they want to make the national tournament.

Note - There will be a total of three Broadmoor Trophies. The largest will be on permanent display at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul in conjunction with the WCHA Final Five, one will be a traveling trophy, and one will be given to the winning team each year as a permanent addition to their display case.

#19 St. Cloud State vs #11t North Dakota
(Season series tied 2-2-0)
Last weekend the SCSU Huskies swept the UNO Mavericks in St. Cloud (4-0, 3-1) and the Sioux swept the BSU Beavers (4-1, 4-3) in Grand Forks.

The teams split both series this year, in late October in Grand Forks the Huskies won the opener 4-0 and then the Sioux rebounded to win the next night 3-1. They met again in mid January in St. Cloud, with the Huskies again winning the opener 3-1 and the Sioux taking the rematch 3-2.

The Sioux have won four games in a row now and are 6-1-1 in their last eight games. The Huskies are unbeaten in their last four game going 3-0-1 and are 5-2-1 in their last eight games. Needless to say, both teams are playing well here at the end of the season. I’m going to say the game comes down to goaltending and who is on their game. SIOUX WIN

Michigan Tech vs #11t Denver
(Season series MTU wins 1-0-1)
Last weekend the Pioneers beat the Wisconsin Badgers in 3 games with the 3rd game going to overtime in Denver. The Huskies swept the CC Tigers in Colorado Springs, after being swept by the Tigers two weeks ago, what a difference a week makes.

These teams met back in late October in Houghton with the Huskies winning the first game 7-2 and tying the second game 2-2.

After spending the last two weekends in Colorado Springs the revitalized Huskies hit the road to St. Paul. This will be MTU’s first visit to the Final Five since 2007, that year they also beat CC to advance St. Paul. (DU was at the Final Five last year). The Pioneers have five of their last six games, with two of the wins coming in overtime. DU has more depth and fire power than the Huskies, so MTU will need to play solid defense and limit the quality scoring chances, if they want to advance. PIONEERS WIN

#8 Minnesota
The Gophers will play the winner of the SCSU-UND game on Friday evening.

On the season, the Gophers are 3-1-0 versus SCSU, they played in mid November in St. Cloud (3-4, 5-0), and swept the Huskies in Minneapolis in late January (2-1, 3-2).

The Gophers versus the Sioux this year are 3-1-0, and they played in Minneapolis in early November with the Gophers winning 2-0, 3-2, and they met again in Grand Forks in mid January with the Sioux winning the Friday game 2-1 and the Gophers winning Saturday 6-2.

I’m going with the Gophers to win their semi-final versus either SCSU or UND.

#3 Minnesota-Duluth
The Bulldogs will play the winner of the MTU-DU game on Friday afternoon.

On the season, the Bulldogs are 2-1-1 versus MTU, they played in early December in Houghton with the Bulldogs sweeping with a pair of 5-2 wins. The rematches came in late January in Duluth with 4-4 opening tie and MTU winning the Saturday game 5-0.

The Bulldogs are 1-0-1 versus the Pioneers this year, they played a series in Denver in early November, Friday’s game ended in a 3-3 tie, and the UMD won 4-0 the following night.

I’m going with the Bulldogs to win over MTU, or DU to win over UMD, depending on who wins Thursday.

Bubble-licious: Colorado College, Niagara

As always I include the INCH Power Rankings, because I find them highly amusing if at times down right silly. This week the boy’s from INCH didn’t disappoint me.

This week’s power ranking include this head scratchier, they have EZAC regular season champ UNION in second place of their power rankings. In what universe is Union a top ten team; they haven’t beaten anyone of national significance and UNION managed to lose twice to the last place team in the ECAC.

A season of Parity. WCHA Hockey

In looking at the standings, I must say that there is a lot of parity in the WCHA this season. From the top of the league, to the bottom of  the WCHA standings, this has been a pretty good season... Four points separated 6-10th place.

I really like Moose Richard’s comment about Sioux fan’s that want Dave Hakstol fired because his teams haven’t won an NCAA title yet.
“I find the whole fire Hakstol line out of Sioux fans just absurd,” Moose said.   “You look over the body of work. Yes there is no national championship in there, but how many Frozen Fours, nine straight final five appearances. It’s just…Yeah you would like the win the big one. Malkin hit on Boychuck

The powers that be in the NHL gives us lip service on how they want to take these types of dirty and unnecesarry hits out of the game of hockey.

In fact the powers that be want to take these types of hits out of all levels of hockey, but then the officials let a super star player off of the hook by only giving them a two minute minor.

I guess it's okay to make these types of dirty and dangerous hits that if your star player like Evgeni Malkin. It would appear that you're not going to the get the five minute major and the game misconduct, if you're a star player like Malkin.

After the game, the head coach of the Boston Bruins Claude Julien didn't seem to like the Malkin hit on defenseman Johnny Boychuk.

"My opinion doesn't matter," Julien said. "We'll have to wait to see what happens from that. But it was Malkin that hit, right? It wasn't [Matt] Cooke? It was Malkin. We'll see. The league will have to look at it. It was a hit from behind. They're the ones who make those decisions. We don't like those hits.

"My job is tough enough as it is. I don't want to do his, because his job is pretty tough as well," Julien added of NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan. "I'm talking about Shanny. So we'll let Shanny do his job and I'll do mine and we'll just move on. You've just got to look at it that way. For different reasons they make their assessments and they decide. So we as coaches have to do our jobs and work with the guys we have." [NESN.COM]
More fuel for the fire is, why was Johnny Boychuk allowed to return to the game after he just got hit with a questionable check and it looked as if he was dazed after the hit. Boychuk had just returned to the Boston Bruins line up after being out a two games with a concussion.

Fighting Sioux Finish off the Bemidji State Beavers 4-3

Grand Forks, ND – In hockey they say that it’s hard to end another team’s season, especially if you are playing an up-tempo team the like BSU Beavers.  The Beavers put up a good fight and didn’t give up until the final horn.

The University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux has come full circle since November 20, 2011 when the Fighting Sioux had just lost a lack-luster game to the Bemidji State Beavers 1-0 in Bemidji.  That was the first loss for the Fighting Sioux to the Beavers in over 41 years.

After the loss to the Beavers the Fighting Sioux had a lack-luster record of 4-7-1 and they sat in 11th place of the WCHA standings.

Since that game the Fighting Sioux have gone an eye-popping 17-5-2.

With the win tonight, the Fighting Sioux improve to 18-5-2 after an exciting 4-3 win against the Beavers tonight.

For this season’s Fighting Sioux hockey team, nothing has come easy.  This game was no different as the Fighting Sioux survived a late third period surge that saw the Beavers  score two goals in 19 seconds, and they were able to hold on to eliminate the Bemidji State Beavers 4-3.

With the win tonight, the Fighting Sioux will advance to the Final Five for a league leading 10th time and will play their first game on Thursday (game time to be determined).  Fighting Sioux head coach Dave Hakstol is excited to be moving on to the Final Five.

“We’re excited!”

“It’s such a great weekend to go there and be a part of it” Hakstol said. “Our guys have worked; it’s a nice reward for a lot of the work our guys have put in this weekend and even the way this game tonight went, it’s kind of indicative of our year.”

“We really can’t do things in an easy way.  We find a way to get it down and I think that’s the best compliment I can pay our guys. They find a way to win.  It’s a nice reward to head to Saint Paul.”
Tonight, three Fighting Sioux seniors played their final game of their hockey career at Ralph Engelstad Arena.  For Mario Lamoureux (Grand Forks, North Dakota), Brad Eidsness (Chestermere, Alberta), and Ben Blood (Plymouth, Minnesota), it’s the end of a four year hockey career.

Fighting Sioux Captain, Mario Lamoreux, reflected on his last game at Ralph Engelstad.

“It’s sad…kind of took a last little look before I skated off the ice and tried to soak it all in,” Lamoureux said.

“It’s been a great four years  and a lot of good memories can’t be more appreciative of the fans and all the people that support this program.  It’s absolutely first class in every way and it makes me extremely proud to be able to be part of this program and represent everything about it and it’s a good way to go out.”

Hakstol had this to say on his senior class’ last game at Ralph Engelstad. Arena.

“I wish it would have been a little less exciting than it was”, Hakstol said.

“A great night.  Brad Eidsness answered the bell again.  He has done it, he did it last Saturday, on senior’s night…he answered the call again tonight.  He was great for his teammates.  Mario and Ben were a huge part of this win tonight, and not just what you saw on the ice.

“This day of preparation starts really after last night’s game and obviously it gets into full swing when you get to the rink in the morning.  I thought our leaders did a good job of having our team ready to play tonight.”

“The last three minutes was a little bit sloppy and a little bit ugly for about a 20 second span.  You know what, we locked it down after that and we didn’t give up anything and did a great job with a one goal lead.”

With the win tonight, the Fighting Sioux improve to 22-12-3.

With the loss tonight, the Bemidji State Beavers fall to 17-18-3.  The loss also eliminates the Bemidji State Beavers from NCAA post season play.  Beaver Coach Tom Serratore had this to say about his team’s season.

“I thought it was a great season.  Everyone gauges their season differently, but I mean, this is a tough league, we know it’s a tough league.  We had 17 wins.  We were over five hundred in the regular season. We had more points than we had last year.  Those are the things we have look at right there.  Again, we made progress and we were hard to play against.  Again, I thought it was a great season.  Obviously we didn’t want it to end this way.  We wanted to advance to the WCHA Final Five, but it didn’t happen. But, that didn’t take anything away from the season we had.”

Grand Forks, NDFighting Sioux defenseman senior Ben Blood last week that, "the playoffs are the best time of year; you get to end other team's seasons."

The Fighting Sioux are looking to end the Bemidji State Beavers season and advance to the WCHA Final Five in St Paul next weekend.

The Fighting Sioux have hosted the first round of the WCHA playoffs for 10 seasons in a row and have made the Final Five nine seasons in a row.

That is currently the WCHA’s longest streak. The Fighting Sioux are looking to make it 10 straight trips to the Final Five.

The Fighting Sioux are one game closer to that feat as they won game one of the series 4-1.

Eliminating the Beavers is not going to be an easy task; the Bemidji State Beavers are a small, quick and tenacious team that gets pucks deep and fore checks the opposition relentlessly.  The Beavers are on top of you from the drop of the first puck to the final horn of the game.

Tonight was no different.

True to form, the upstart Beavers didn’t disappoint and they bottled up the Fighting Sioux and gave them a small number of offensive opportunities and carried the play for a good part of the game.

The Beavers proved against tonight that they are a tough team to play against and they didn’t give the Fighting Sioux very much and they  took away the Fighting Sioux’s time and space.

Fighting Sioux head coach Dave Hakstol seemed happy to get the win in tonight’s game.

“Well we got a win in game one of the series, playing against a good hockey team, that played awful hard tonight,” Hakstol said.

“If you look at our performance there was a lot of good to it, much too sporadic for playoff time.  We need to challenge ourselves tomorrow to be at a higher level, on a more consistence basis throughout our game.”

Tonight, was the night of the goaltender.

Fighting Sioux junior goalie Aaron Dell brought his “A” game against the Beavers and he kept them off of the score sheet for the first 54.08 of the game, stopping many grade “A” opportunities, many of them many of them down low, the Beavers also hit three pipes.

Dell would finally get beat by an Aaron McLeod goal on the power play at 14:08 mark of the third period.  I don’t think it’s inaccurate to say that Aaron Dell was the difference in this game and a bright spot for the Fighting Sioux tonight. Fighting Sioux head coach Dave Hakstol agreed.

“I thought it was a close game, scoring chances were probably close to even if not dead even,” Hakstol said. “Aaron [Dell] did a good job tonight; he has done for us the last few weeks.”

On the other end of the ice Bemidji State Beaver senior goalie Dan Bakala was also very good stopping 19 of 23 shots many of them were grade “A” scoring chances as well. Beaver head coach Tom Serratore was impressed with both goaltenders. “I thought both goaltenders played very well,” Serratore said. “It was a very good goaltending duel.”

For the Fighting Sioux, junior forward Carter Rowney led the Fighting Sioux with three assists tonight.

With the loss tonight, the Beavers drop to their record to 17-17-3 and need to win game two of tomorrow night’s series to stay alive. Tomorrow night, it’s win or go home for the Beavers.

With the win tonight the Fighting Sioux improve their record to 21-12-3. Game two in the best of three series is tomorrow night at 07:07 pm.
