Former Fighting Sioux Defenseman Mike Commodore with his Prediction

Today, former Fighting Sioux defenseman Mike Commodore took to Twitter to make his prediction on the North Dakota vs. Michigan game. Some of the responses by the Michigan fans are kind of funny, too.

TSR Story on Mike Commodore

Here's a good story about former Fighting Sioux defenseman Mike Commodore that I found over on Kukla's Korner. There's some interesting things in this article.
Allan Brown, Top Sports Report -- Following stints with Ottawa, Columbus and Detroit, the 6-4 defenseman would eventually end up playing for the same Lightning team that extinguished his Cup dream the first time.

Since leaving Tampa Bay at the end of the 2012 season, Commodore has been making the rounds, playing with both Hamilton and Texas of the AHL. His most recent stint took him to Russia where he played this past season with the KHL’s Vladivostok Admiral.

At 34, Commie, as he is affectionately known to friends and fans, is keeping his future in the proper perspective with the same never-give-up attitude that has served him well since his earliest playing days when he won an NCAA championship with the University of North Dakota. While still with the Fighting Sioux, he was drafted by the New Jersey Devils. The rest is history.

“I am taking it year by year now,” Commodore said. “I enjoyed my experience in Russia and would like to go back for another year. We will see what happens.

“I have lived in and traveled to a ton of cities. I am trying to slow it down a bit now. Unless something unexpected happens, I think I will spend my time in Calgary and Scottsdale once my career is over,” he added.

Shawn Thornton vs. Mike Commodore

In this situation, former Fighting Sioux and current Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mike Commodore didn't really need to fight Boston Bruins tough guy Shawn Thornton. I guess some guys will do whatever it takes to make the team or stay on a team.

Trade Deadline: The Yawner 2012 (RW77)

NHL on the Fly's Trade Deadline Special was right when it said that the major news was the trade that didn't happen.

Rick Nash wasn't traded. He's the latest Joe Thornton, it appears. Apparently he was to be traded to the New York Rangers but the price was too high (which anyone could have told you that. Rick Nash IS the Blue Jackets. Without him, you basically have no team).

There were some intriguing trades though.

What do you all think of the Wild's trades? They acquire Steve Kampfer and Tom Gilbert for Greg Zanon and Nick Schultz. So, this probably means that Schultz and Zanon were UFAs after the season, right? Perhaps Gilbert and Kampfer were under contract a bit longer? Kampfer is alright and Gilbert is too, but this seems to be a lateral trade rather than an upgrade. They didn't even get any picks.

However, the BEST trade of the day was made by the Chicago Blackhawks. They got a 2012 5th round pick for boxer on skates John Scott. This is almost like (RIP, buddy) trading Boogaard for a 1st round pick. Chicago got WAY THE HELL MORE VALUE than Scott. Someone tell me that the Hawks wouldn't have settled for a 6th or 7th round pick or even a conditional 2013 5th rounder (with conditions that will obviously not be met) for Scott. It's almost like the Rangers GM was Glen Sather... oh wait. Ok, I get it now.

In the end, though, Chicago didn't get what they need: a goaltender, so they won't be there in the end. Detroit traded Commodore for another Dman who won't play.

In the end, believe it or not, the winner overall I think is Vancouver. Sure, they trade Hodgson away, but they got two good players in Kassian Sulzer, pick up Pahlsson and Gordon for depth. Win I say.

Buffalo comes in second.

Boston got this year's Mark Recchi in Brian "when I was a rookie, Crosby's parents were still in middle school" Rolston (which is younger than Mark "I played pond hockey with Moses" Recchi and Chris "I skated with Jesus Christ" Chelios... or perhaps Gordie "I was there when God told me he was having a kid with some chick in Bethlehem" Howe).

Former Sioux Mike Commodore and Brian Lee are now teammates with the Lightning.

Wings and Things (RW77)

First off, I'd like to congratulate Kris Draper on a fabulous career. The 40 year old center called it a career this week and I'm going to say that he'll be missed. Draper, or "Drapes" to fans and teammates, wasn't the flashiest player on the ice, but he was a rock solid leader in the lockerroom. Up and coming winger (and former MSU Spartan) Justin Abdelkader looks to him as a mentor type and Abdelkader's growth at the NHL level is at least partially attributed to Draper's influence on Justin.

Let's look at stats: First off, Draper was selected 62nd overall by Winnipeg in 1989. And that's where things got strange. First off, Draper went to the AHL (appearing in 7 games), then played a little in the NHL (3 games). THEN was sent to the OHL. So he played pros before he played Major Juniors. That's not the strangest thing. In 1993, Winnipeg traded Kris Draper to Detroit for... ONE DOLLAR. Yup. $1. I'm not sure a GM could keep his job in today's world if all he got for a player was $1. I can't believe that there wasn't something, even a conditional 9th round pick, that Winnipeg couldn't have gotten for Draper.

In the end, Kris Draper retires with his name etched FOUR times on the Stanley Cup and a Selke Trophy (for NHL's best defensive forward) in 2004. He retires as only the 5th player in Detroit history to play 1,000 games with Detroit. He is also 9th all time in NHL Post season appearances (2nd on Detroit if you don't count Chris Chelios).

He's not going to get into the NHL Hall of Fame, but he certainly is one of the all time great Red Wings.

Best of luck Drapes.

Mike Commodore will NOT be wearing #64.

According to insider sources (Bill Roose's twitter feed and Winging It in Motown - Detroit Red Wings' blog), Mike Commodore will wear #22 for Detroit this season. However, Mike has indicated that he may still participate in the $64 charity promotion that was suggested along with the jersey number.

Big Mike Signs with the Red Wings (RW77)

OOOOooooooooh YEAH!!!!!!

Big Mike Commodore is back with a winning team! The guy known as "Commy" (probably spelled wrong but I refuse to spell it such that I would be confused with calling him a communist) all 6'5" of him (not counting the 3'6" of red hair) is coming to Motown!

He signed a 1 year, $1 million contract, which is about what I expected him to sign after having two disappointing years in Columbus (of 3.. his first year was pretty good with the Jackets).

Here is a nice perspective by Bill Roose.

Big Mike won a National Championship with UND in 2000 and has won a Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006. He was drafted in the 2nd round by New Jersey. The Wings are his sixth team.

Notable in useless trivia: He was traded to Ottawa for current Wing Patrick Eaves (then to Carolina).

This now gives the Wings a forest of a D line, with 4 of 6 defensemen over 6'4" tall.

What does this mean? I hope it means that the Wings will have a crushing defense. However, what I hope it doesn't mean that the Wings defense will be pylons. Then again, with 41 year old Nicklas Lidstrom still playing effectively (Suck it Chelios) it may not matter. I'm still going to be excited about Kronwall (the best open ice hitting defenseman in the NHL... He reminds me a LOT of Konstantinov but Kronwall is taller), Stuart (meh), Kindl (younger version of meh), and Ericsson (jury's still out) playing with Commodore. Commodore isn't going to score any goals or be as great a puck mover as Stuart, Lidstrom, and perhaps Kindl and Ericsson. Commodore brings grit on the blue line, something I feel Detroit has lacked a bit in recent years.

I hope his career takes off.

Former Fighting Sioux Defenseman Commodore Requests Trade

The other night when I watched the Wild and Blue Jackets the TV announcers said that Mike Commodore had been a healthy scratch quite a bit as of late. According to the Columbus Blue Jackets beat writer Mike Commodore has sat out seven of the last eight games. Based on the kind of money big Mike makes it's going to be hard to trade him...
Here's what Commodore said:

"(Arniel) doesn't want to play me. Obviously, he doesn't want to play me. After wins, losses ... it doesn't matter. Obviously, I'm the seventh guy in his mind. So, I'm going to take care of myself, be a good teammate, work hard, practice hard and keep myself ready for whatever comes in the future."

Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel reiterated his stance yesterday.

"I don't have him in our top six," Arniel said. "He feels he should be, which is why he asked for the trade. I understand that.

"This isn't personal. This has to do with hockey skills. How you play the game, how you are with your teammates, how you work off the ice. It's not personal. He's just not in our top six."

Howson would not comment publicly on the trade demand, but both he and Arniel said Commodore has not been a poor teammate and has not been a distraction in the dressing room.

This is the latest detour in what has been a winding road since Commodore signed a five-year, $18.75 million contract on July 1, 2008. A no-trade clause covered the first two years of the deal, but lifted last July 1.
