Ugly stick swinging incident in the OHL

Wow! This was an ugly incident that took place in the OHL last night. How long of a suspension do you think the London Knights Ryan Rupert gets for his slash on Nick Cousins? s/t Neate Sager
Ryan Pyette, The London Free Press --- As time expired on the 'Hounds' 4-3 victory over the Canadian Hockey League's top-ranked team before 9,046 Friday night at the John Labatt Centre, Sault Ste. Marie's pesky forward Nick Cousins taunted the Knights, earning a retaliatory slash from Ryan Rupert.

That triggered a series of end-of-game fights, serious bad blood and sets the stage for the Knights' final two regular season games against the 'Hounds - both in January in Sault Ste. Marie.

Cousins received a misconduct for inciting and Rupert received a major penalty for his slash.

There are suspensions in store for the multiple scraps. Both teams stayed on the ice surface an additional five minutes after the final buzzer as a full-scale brawl threatened to break out.

This is why I complain about the WCHA officials...

First off, I am not a Golden Gopher hockey apologist by any stretch of the imagination but after watching this video replay of this penalty call about five times; forget who the team is that just got called for a minor penalty, this is a horse bleep call.

This is why fans of WCHA teams complain about the on ice referees in the WCHA. Seriously, what did Ben Marshal do to get the gate? In my opinion, that is a horrible call and this is the reason I hack on the officials in the WCHA. I also pray that the NCHC doesn't use WCHA officials or hire Greg Shepherd to be the head of officials for the NCHC.

Classic Dean Blais

Check out these quotes by former Fighting Sioux head coach Dean Blais. You have to love guys like Blais who tells it like it is. I don't think I would classify this as bulletin board material because that's the way that BSU plays, I would bet that BSU will come out flying tonight. These comments kind of remind me of the Tampa Bay Lightning as well.
Rob White, WORLD-HERALD --- Unlike last weekend's wide-open series with Colorado College, in which the Mavs earned a split with the team that had been ranked No. 2 in the country, UNO knows things are going to look different this weekend.

"We thought we'd match up well with CC because that's a skating team," Blais said. "They were both great games. (But) these aren't going to be great games. It's going to take a lot of patience. At times there will be boredom because of the way they play."

[Dan] Bakala is 2-3 this season with a 2.87 goals-against average but a save percentage of only .886. He's split time with two others thus far for a Beavers team that is 4-6 and 2-4.

But this weekend, UNO comes to town.

"They are disciplined in everything they do, and you have to give their coaches credit for that," Blais said. "They don't take chances offensively. Defensively they play a real compact defensive-zone coverage. They'll give you shots from the outside knowing their goaltender is good."

UND to join the Big Sky...

For those fans that were worrying about the Big Sky conference not accepting UND because of the three year cooling off period that requires UND to adopt no nickname or logo before January 2015. Those fears were all for not as it doesn’t seem to be an issue at all with the Big Sky Conference.
Wayne Nelson, Grand Forks Herald --- Currently, there are only four Division I Football Championship Subdivision programs that do not have a conference home. And three of those independents are headed for conference affiliation in the future.

Scheduling football games as an independent virtually would have been impossible, according to school officials.

UND football has competed in the Great West Conference since 2008. But the five-team league will disband after this season, with UC Davis, Cal Poly and Southern Utah all moving to the Big Sky. South Dakota, the fifth school, is headed to the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

With Dalrymple’s signature, the priority at the UND athletic department now focuses on the school’s future in the Big Sky.

“It’s bittersweet,” UND athletic director Brian Faison said of Wednesday’s developments. “This allows us to move on.”

The Big Sky has been following the North Dakota Legislature. UND President Robert Kelley was in contact with the league office after Dalyrmple’s signature.

UND will join the league without a nickname.

“We are North Dakota,” Faison said. “That’s who we will be.”

Jacques Lemaire blasts Versus crew.

I was watching this game last night on Versus and I thought the move by the Flyers to just stand there and wait for the Lightning to come after the Flyers was interesting, I aslo thought it was funny that the Flyers got whistled for not moving the puck.

I have to admit that I hate the “Neutral Zone Trap.” Seriously the NZT is God awful hockey and very boring to watch and I would rather watch a game where two teams trade offensive opportunities up and down the ice. I can’t imagine a lot of fan bases that say, I want to watch a 1-0 defensive trap feast and watch my team line up at the blue line and wait for the opposing team to try and come across. Being ADHD it makes it very hard for me to stay interested in that type of hockey game.
Damian Cristodero; Lighting Strikes --- Here is what former Devils and Wild coach Jacques Lemaire said about the criticism of Lightning coach Guy Boucher from Versus commentators Mike Milbury, Keith Jones and Pierre McGuire Wednesday night about the team's 1-3-1 trapping system, which they said makes for such boring hockey the Lightning and Boucher should be embarrassed and even "punished."

"Myself, I laugh at this," Lemaire told the St. Petersburg Times in a phone interview. "I laugh at it this because are we supposed to coach as we please the people who are announcing the games or make comments on the games? Is that a new style or what? Do we have to please Milbury when we coach? It's the first time I hear of this."

If anyone knows about criticism, it is Lemaire. Lemaire's trap was vilified by hockey watchers and commentators all over North America as detrimental to the game because the defensive posture in the neutral zone was, when played correctly, very difficult to beat. It slowed down the action, critics said. It created boring hockey. But it also won, as Lemaire and the Devils captured the 1995 Stanley Cup.
I think the worst hockey game I ever watched was a game 1-0 snore feast between Cornell and UND. The Sioux outshot the Big Red 2-1 and the Big Red played their boring 1-3-1 style of hockey and collapsed around the net whenever they saw fit.

I also can’t believe that the Tampa Bay Lighting fans want to watch this style of hockey on a nightly basis, nor do I believe that the Lightning need to play that style of a game. There is enough high end talent on the Lightning that they can open the game up and push the puck up the ice.

Lastly, let’s make no mistake about it, Jacques Lemaire is in the hall of fame, he was a great coach, but his hockey teams were very mind numbingly boring to watch. The New Jersey Devils of the 1990's were about as entertaining as watching paint dry. That being said, I also think that Lemaire has a point as well, he isn't coaching to please the TV audiences and the pointed headed pundits, coaching hockey is about winning games and using the your personnel to the best of their abilities.

Through These Doors, episode 5

Another awesome job by the UND SID office. Stick tap to Matt Schill and Jayson Hajdu.
This week's episode "Beards and the Bye Week" focuses on what UND is doing as it heads into an off weekend after getting swept at Minnesota. It's a work week, but there's some lighter moments, as the team compares facial hair for Movember with some ribbing at the expense assistant coach Dane Jackson during faceoff drills. Matt Frattin on playing the Blues and T.J. Oshie

Goon - the Movie

This looks like a movie that I am going to have to see. Here is the review from the IMDb on the movie.
But what sets it apart from the other Canadian hockey films is its glorification of violence and carnage on ice. Glatt's main objective is to destroy and take out the other players, and everyone around him is constantly stressing that. While we get to witness the struggle he has trying to understand if there will ever be anything more for him, the film still paints him in the corner of always needing to fight, which leads to some horrifically bloody battles. Dowse does not shy away from how violent the sport can be; instead he makes it incredibly gratuitous and takes it dangerously close to the limits of decency. I laughed at how silly the violence became, but I was surprised at just how gory it was in many instances. It will no doubt cause a minor controversy, and I would not be surprised if a lot of people ignore the fact that the film is one of the few to actually deal with the topic head-on.

Weekend Match-Ups (Sioux 7)

First off let me start by saying THANK YOU to all our VETERANS (which includes the Goon) for proudly serving this great country we call home. THANK YOU.

Now with the honoring of our Veterans this Veteran's Day, we can move on to hockey. We have a couple of big rivalry games this weekend, UM-UW (they also play football against each other this weekend too) and DU-CC. I'm looking forward to watching a few games on TV this weekend since the Sioux are off.

WCHA Games

Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves @ #10 Minnesota-Duluth
Last weekend the Seawolves had a free weekend and the Bulldogs took 3-points from the Pioneers in Denver.

The Seawolves are looking for their first WCHA win of the season this weekend. However, I don’t think the Bulldogs are going to roll over and give them a win. The Bulldogs are riding a 4 game unbeaten streak back into Amsoil arena. UAA has only scored 3 goals in their last 4 games; needless to say, they have to up their scoring in order to win. I always have said the magic number is 3, three goals in a game and have a legitimate shot of winning most every game. In the end, I think the Bulldogs will prevail this weekend. DULUTH SWEEP

St. Cloud State @ Minnesota State
Last weekend the Mavericks split with the MTU Huskies in Houghton and the Huskies took 3-points from the Badgers in St. Cloud.

The Mavericks, when you look at the standings, they can say they are ahead of UND, not to bad for the skating wounded. MSUM will be okay if they can get some consistent play from their new kids and have them step up and be the MANkato Mavericks. Also you can say they have had a tough schedule this year, DU and MTU. The key for the Huskies will be to score early and get the crowd out of the game and rattle the Mavericks. SPLIT

#1 Minnesota @ Wisconsin
Last weekend the Gophers swept the Fighting Sioux in Minneapolis and the Badgers salvaged 1 point against the Huskies in St. Cloud.

I have to admit the Gophers look good this year, they will a title contender, hell at this rate they might be able to call dibs on it before Christmas. The Badgers have only got one conference win against someone with a winning record, that would be against UNO. Of course, this is another big rivalry for the Gophers, so they should be pumped up again this weekend, same could be said for the Badgers. UW also has the home ice advantage, so the crowd could/will be a factor. The Badgers need to score first to get the crowd going, or keep them in it. It’s hard to pick against the red hot gophers right now, especially with all the goals they are averaging. GOPHERS 3-points

Nebraska-Omaha @ Bemidji State
Last weekend the Mavericks split with the Tigers in Omaha and the Beavers split with Lake Superior State in Bemidji.
Last year the Beavers had the Mavericks number. The boys from BSU beat them 5 times and tied them once last season (they swept them in Omaha in the first round of the wcha playoffs). That was last year, this is this year, so it could be UNO’s season to return the favor. I’m sure the Mavericks remember the beat down from last year and would love to extract some revenge this season. I’m thinking they will get it, but not get complete revenge. SPLIT

#3 Colorado College @ #12 Denver (Saturday Only)
Last weekend the Tigers Split with UNO Mavericks in Omaha and the Pioneers got 1point against the UMD Bulldogs in Denver.
Can we say Gold Pan game 1, lights, camera, action. Last year these teams split their four games 2-2-0, but each team won both games on their home ice. If that hold true this year, the Pioneers should win, since they are at home. Past performance does not guarantee future predictability. The Pioneers are having a minor power outage, since they scored 10 goals on MSUM in one game, they have only put up 7 goals in their next 4 games. DU needs to get their offense back on the wagon tracks. The Tigers are just the opposite, they have scored 18 goals in their last 4 games. I’m going with the hotter team. TIGERS WIN

Roll-er-COAST-GRRRRRRRRR!!! (Redwing77)

I originally wrote this during and right after the Friday night game vs. Minnesota. I had to walk away from it these days because I thought my emotion got carried away. I did not remove too much of my passion but I did edit this and move some information around. Enjoy:

What an exciting game.

The first period featured UND coming out guns blazing... shooting blanks but guns blazing anyways. it was up and down. It was exciting. My heart was racing the entire time!

The second period was another story. We started peppering again but then Lamoreaux got rocked and off Ambroz went for contact to the head roughing. And what happened?

The worst major power play I've ever seen that DID NOT involve a short handed goal. It was AWFUL. How often do you see a major power play that has more short handed shots on goal than powerplay shots on goal? Well, this one should be video recorded and everyone should watch it to see how NOT to play on the powerplay. Dell came up big but he was the only Sioux player on the ice for those five minutes.

Powerplay suckitude

This brings me to my major gripe with UND. Their powerplay is just sad. Who is shooting the puck? No one down low. No one center ice. ONLY the point makes the shot. And you can point at Kristo all you want but when he's not on the ice, the shot STILL comes from the point. Perimeter shooting is ok when you try to mix it up and try to get down low. They didn't attempt really the entire major penalty but they did try a few times on a few minor penalties.

I love the fact that they shoot the puck, but they got to get the puck coming towards the net from all angles to enable the possibility of the goaltender getting caught guessing or leaning the wrong way. Right now, if I'm killing penalties, you can almost predict where the shot will come from and crowd the point. I believe this hurt the Sioux a number of times tonight (EDIT: And Saturday night as well).

Officiating Rears its ugly head

Can Marco Hunt be worse than Don Adam? Two phantom penalty calls in the 3rd period alone is enough to bring up this as a viable question. I wish I was at Mariucci and could speak to Lucia. If I could, I'd tell him to tell his players just to fall down when in heavy traffic while carrying the puck. That way they can spend ALL GAME on the powerplay. Hunt lets the game get out of hand and fails to see both sides of the ice... wait a minute, that's part of the Standard Operating procedure for WCHA officials. But hey. As long as each side has equal power play opportunities, no one cares right? It's interesting that, during the game on Brad's live chat (which I cannot do anymore thanks to all the lousy ads and negativity), fans were saying Shepherd was in UND's pocket. You'd think that one ref in each sides' pockets, though unethical, would have evened things out?

Sure, UND has had a few beneficial calls in this game. But I wonder how many of those Minnesota penalties were REALLY penalties? Good LORD I'm anxious for the NCHC so we can get rid of these morons. Then again, will the NCHC refs be any better?

Lackadasical Play

Has the Sioux D found Serratore yet? Have we found a goaltender to play against that isn't going to step up and play the best game of his career yet? How many excuses are we going to have before we start doing the little things well? This team is BETTER than it is playing. Sure, you have your young shooters but no one is shooting but Kristo and Knight. Nelson gets a few shots here and there but heck, I just called out the first line. Time to start really pressing.

Silver Lining? It's early in the season.

Black Lining? We're putting an awful lot of pressure on the boys the second half of the season.

By the way: GOOD GOD our powerplay is awful. Just awful. Just Just awful. You can't feel bad if you do make a mistake against the Sioux and go down a man. They'll probably just bomb it from the point or turn it over and allow your boys to get a good go at Dell.

Minnesota's Improved

I hate to say "I told you so!" but... The recruits were essentially the same during Hill's final year and the team this year is essentially the same save those recruits. What I'm trying to say is this: The only change is Guentzel. And already they're starting to look a lot like... well, the last time Minnesota looked like they did vs. us? Well, they won something in April that we haven't won since 2000. Championships aren't won in October or November so Minnesota has a long ways to go, but they've DEFINITELY improved. So much so that it would be VERY hard NOT to consider Minnesota the most drastically improved team in the WCHA... that's saying something with MTU looking like...well looking like they're actually a hockey team.

In this case, I hate being right, but really... the ONLY real difference is Guentzel and it shows just how sucktastic a coach John Hill was. This brings my new musing: If Guentzel had been hired at UAA instead of Hill when Hill was hired... would UAA still have been a joke cellar dweller that MSUM seems to have become nowadays? Something tells me that UAA might have been better than they were during the Hill years just Hill drove the talent down.

In any case, I'm still not convinced that Patterson is the best goaltender in the WCHA (as a radio commentator or reporter put it), but he did play an amazing game tonight. Also, the Gophers did something that I'm not used to seeing: backchecking. Sure, that has always been their preferred defense of choice over the physical gameplay but this time they were really effective.

The Gophers tried to raise their physicality as well but the officials made it hard for them to do so without paying the price as well as some of their younger players showed their inexperience (see Ambroz).

All in all, this wasn't a game of domination by either team. In the end, it was a game where Minnesota just played better than we did when it mattered the most.

The Sioux need to stay out of the box and, until we figure out how to play a man up, so does our opponent so we can start generating some better scoring chances. Right now, it's not working. Right now, we can't hit the net where the goaltender isn't and when we have the opportunity, we can't corral the puck long enough to shoot it in.

A very aggravating loss and perhaps the harshness of this post is fueled by it.

Gopher's Nick Bjugstad scores, Mario Lamoureux gets hurt

I have seen a few people talk about this play on line and this was the first time that I had seen this video, the Whistler made mention of this play in his blog post on Friday night.
The Sioux played the Gophers well through most of the game. The first goal was by Nick Bjugstad on the power play that wound up being a virtual 5 on 3 as Mario Lamoureux blocked two shots which broke his stick and left him nearly unable to stand. I give him a lot of credit for getting up and still attempting to block more shots, though it wasn't hard for the Gophers to move around him.
I agree with the Whistler and I actually think that Mario should be applauded for his effort, I have seen a few people criticize him for staying on the ice. I am not sure what Mario is supposed to do in this situation? Lamoureux is obviously hurt; he is caught out in no man's land, the Sioux bench is a long ways away from  because its the second period, so the captain continues to play in pain. In my opinion that establishes Mario as a selfless leader who put the team before his own needs.

Nick Johnson vs Jarome Iginla

I was watching this game last night and Wild forward Nick Johnson is thrown out of the game for an alleged head butt. I have watched this video numerous times and I for the life of me don't see the head butt that Iginla is complaining about. I have to agree with BReynolds that there is no head butt.

Also, the ref that made the call Tim Kowal should probably apologize to Mikko Koivu for yelling at him at the players bench, what a jerk. Mikko is a captain and he is allowed to talk to the officials. The move that is semi funny is how Iggy complains about the head but then punches Johnson.

Is this a look to the future?

Adam from the Sioux jersey blog posted this on twitter and I think UND's next hockey jersey is going to look a lot like this.
What do you think? I actually like this style and would probably buy one in the future. According to today's  Herald sports writers chat, Brad Schlossman said, "They [UND] already have designs for them [Jerseys]."

The sky is falling; not yet...

This is the second addition of the “sky is falling” that the Whistler wrote on Saturday after the Sioux were swept by the Golden Gophers in Mariucci Arena.

The Sioux have dug a pretty deep hole, but there is still a lot of season left. In my opinion, there is no reason to panic yet or start a movement to have Fighting Sioux head coach Dave Hakstol fired as the coach of the Fighting Sioux.

Even if the Fighting Sioux fail to make the Final Five and the NCAA tourney Dave Hakstol will still be the head coach of the Fighting Sioux when the season is over.

I think it’s safe to predict that the Fighting Sioux will not repeat as champs in the WCHA, however, they can still salvage the season by making a solid run in the second half of the season and making the NCAA playoffs. Last season UMD proved that the fourth best team in the WCHA can still win the NCAA title.

The Fighting Sioux with the 3-2 loss on Saturday night dropped to an unimpressive record of 3-5-1 overall and 1-5-0 in WCHA action. That is the worst start for the Fighting Sioux since the 1974-75 season when the Fighting Sioux started the season 1-9-0.

I was out hunting in the Devils Lake area and I was able to listen to both games on the radio and it would appear that Aaron Dell was great in net all weekend, any time you can limit a team like the Gophers to five goals against for the weekend; that’s an impressive feat. I also believe that the Fighting Sioux wasted two nice goaltending efforts by Dell. Dell stopped 39 of 42 shots on Saturday night and that is the most saves Dell has had in a games since last year's WCHA Final Five championship game against Denver University. Dell also stopped 30 of 32 shots in Friday night’s game. For the weekend Dell stopped 69/74 shots for a .932 save percentage.

The Fighting Sioux penalty kill has started to put up impressive numbers. The Fighting Sioux held the Gophers vaunted power play to one goal all weekend long, The Fighting Sioux killed 14 of 15 Gopher power plays and now have only given up one goal in the last 22 power plays, killing 21 of the last 22 opponent power plays.

This goal by Roco Grimaldi gives me reason to be optimistic.

Gopher fans like to talk about how the Fighting Sioux are a bunch of goons. Under no circumstances will Minnesota's Pansies on Ice drop the gloves.

Aaron Dell was in the zone against the Gophers and here is an example of this as Dell makes a nice save against Minnesota

Delay Proposed To Replace Fighting Sioux Nickname

I have been out of the loop for about five days and I am beginning to wade through mounds of newspaper articles about the Fighting Sioux nickname repeal law and I think this is the best option that I have read so far. There is no logical reason to rush Willy Nilly to get a new nickname in place. Also, I like the option of just being “North Dakota” and hope that option gains some traction, forever. I always liked the slogan, 'We are One. We are North Dakota.'
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota lawmakers say the University of North Dakota should wait three years before replacing its Fighting Sioux athletics nickname.

The North Dakota House and Senate education committees have endorsed allowing UND to retire the Fighting Sioux nickname and American Indian head logo.

The full House and Senate still have to approve the bill before it becomes law.

Grand Forks Rep. Stacey Dahl says the measure prevents UND from adopting a new nickname and logo until January 2015. She calls it a "cooling-off" period.

Board of Higher Education president Grant Shaft says the board supports the idea.

The committees voted Tuesday to endorse the proposal. Now it goes to the Senate for its first vote. The vote hasn't been scheduled.

The Sky Is Falling: Gophers Win It In the Third

Swept by the Gophers. What could be worse.

Last night the Sioux played very well against the Gophers until there was only six minutes left in the game.

At that time the Sioux were ahead of the Gophers two to one on goals by Brock Nelson and Rocco Grimaldi.

At that time Nick Larson scored a goal and then the impressive Freshman Kyle Rau scored the game winner with less than a minute to go.

At first it looked to me that Rau's goal showed have been disallowed because of a handpass but going back on the DVR convinced me that the official made the right call.

That's not to say that the officials had a good game. They were wildly inconsistent both ways. I don't think the players know what's going to be called from one shift to the next.

At this point of the season the Sioux are tied for 10th in the WCHA with a singe victory. I'm sure the coaching staff is going to be working hard on a number of things.

By and large I've been happy with most of the effort by the Sioux. They've stayed in in nearly every game. Unfortunately this team seems to have a let down late in the third period. Last night it cost us the game, where in most of the other games we've lost we've just not been able to challenge the game late.

Last night was the first game that we were really outshot. Aaron Dell stopped 39 of 42 shots. In contrast Kent Paterson for the Gophers only stopped 17 of the 19 shots against him.

The other problem that the coaching staff is going to have to address is getting our scoring up. With the losses from last year we knew it would take some doing to get our scoring up, we lost five our or top six scorers. I've not looked it up, but it's pretty clear that those were Frattin, Malone, Trupp, Gregoire and Hexstal.

Getting Grimaldi in the lineup is going to help a lot. He's a dynamic player and his goal last night was a beaut. Aside from that I think we're going to have to get some players in close, too many of our shots are coming from the outside.

The season is just getting started and I still think we'll be a force in March and April, but we've got some growing to do.

Finally I want to commend the Gophers for getting their mojo back.

Gophers 2; Fighting Sioux 0

First of all I have to comment that it appears that the departure of John Hill from the coaching ranks certainly improved the Minnesota Gophers. I believe their record is now 8 and 1 with 5 shut outs. That's a far cry from recent Gopher teams that had the talent but have been missing the national tournament lately.

I think we all expected that as young as the Sioux team is this year that it would take a while for them to become real competitive. Where that's really showing up is in the scoring. The Sioux had a few good chances, but they still can't score like we need to.

I have to give him credit. After a short stint on the bench he finished the game.

The Sioux didn't suffer many breakdowns in my opinion until late in the game. The one that hurt the most led to the second goal where the Gophers won a faceoff in the defensive end and managed to get by the defense in the scramble after the drop of the puck. That led to a break-a-way goal for Tom Serratore on a nifty little pass from Nick Larson.

It was a entertaining game with at least one old time scrum, without the punches. It's pretty clear that the Gophers came into the game with the idea that they weren't going to fold under the physical play like they have in some of the games in the past.

The one thing that's troubling is the officiating that's going to lead to a player getting seriously injured. In the first period, Gopher Nate Condon launched Derek Rodwell headfirst into the boards. The tandem of Derek Sheppard and Marco Hunt called Condon for a minor penalty. Of course when they let hits like that go by someone is going to do it again. In the second period Seth Ambroz hit Mario from behind and finished the game in the locker room.

Hits that launch a player headfirst into the boards have no place in hockey. The rules are very specific but the refs in the WCHA have no respect for the players safety.

I'll get off my soapbox now. I hate to say it but at this point of the season it looks like the Gophers are back to being a contender.
