Maple Leafs' Kadri suspended three games for Bush League hit (Video)

First, I was out of town and away from the computer, but this hit did get my ire. I don't like this hit one bit, it's a dangerous hit and it's unneeded. In my opinion, the headline should read, Maple Leafs' forward Kadri suspended five games for bush league hits. Second, why isn't there any supplemental discipline for the hit on Minnesota Wild forward Mikael Granlund? That's a dirty hit in my opinion as well. I don't know, maybe I am not looking at this objectively because I am Wild fan? Thoughts on this?

But I digress.

Nazem Kadri's hit on Niklas Backstrom is a chicken wing elbow. Anytime a player extends the elbow like this, it's intentional. I don't care what the players says at his hearing. The NHL has suspended Nazem Kadri three-games for his elbow on Backstrom.  Also, watch the suspension video, it's utter crap. I would use another word, but it's now a word that is used on this blog.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Donn)

NCHC Games

#20 Minnesota-Duluth @ #13 North Dakota

Last weekend the Bulldogs were on a bye and NoDak split with the Mavericks in Omaha, 4-2L and 3-2W.

These teams last meet in Duluth (Nov. 16/17 2012) with both games going into overtime, the opener ended in a 4-4 tie and the closer ended in a 4-3 win for NoDak.

But that was last year and this is this year, new year, new players, new chances.  NoDak has had some trouble finding the back of the net, and they need to find ways to generate more offensive if they want some points.  SPLIT

Western Michigan @ Denver

Last weekend the Broncos salvaged a point against Northern Michigan (5-4L, 2-2ot) in Kalamazoo, and the Pioneers got a tie and win over arch-rival CC (1-1ot, 2-1W).

The “Omelet Series” as I will call it - all it needs are some pancakes, bacon, and OJ to be a complete breakfast - takes place in the mile high city of Denver this weekend. Now we just have to find out which chef/coach has the best recipe for victory.  I see each teams gets a piece of the pie.  SPLIT

Non-Conference Games

#12 Wisconsin @ #8 Miami

Last weekend the Badgers tied and beat the Lakers (LSSU) in Madison (3-3, 8-1) and the RedHawks split (2-0W, 2-1L) with the SCSU Huskies in St. Could.

The Badgers are 0-2-0 on the road this season, losing to BC 9-2 and BU 7-3, ouch.  Knowing that Miami is just as good, or better, than those teams, it’s hard to give the Badgers much of a chance this weekend in Oxford.  RedHawks SWEEP

#2 Michigan @ Nebraska-Omaha

Last weekend the Wolverines swept Michigan Tech (3-2ot, 2-1) in Ann Arbor and the Mavericks split (4-2W, 3-2L) with NoDak in Omaha.

These old CCHA members get to rekindle their relationship this weekend in Omaha.

Last time these teams met was in the NCAA West Regional in March of 2011, with Michigan winning 3-2 in overtime on a controversial goal call. The met earlier that season in October of 2010 in Ann Arbor, where they split a pair of games.  However, Michigan is number two (he he, number two) and the Mavericks are not ranked. I’m thinking the Mavericks got a few tricks up their sleeves for this weekend.  SPLIT

#3 St. Could St. @ Alabama-Huntsville

Last weekend the Huskies split (2-0L, 2-1W) with the RedHawks at home and the Chargers got swept by the Seawolves (3-2, 6-1) in Anchorage.

I will modify a quote a few of my friends will understand, “Alabama-Huntsville is NOT a good team.”  I’ve never been to Huntsville, but if they have a wood shed, the Chargers are going to be out behind it this weekend.  This should be a whoopin’…  HUSKIES SWEEP

Air Force @ Colorado College (Tues 11/19)

Last weekend 11/1- 11/2 the Falcons beat RIT 2-0 and lost to Mercyhurst 8-2 on the road on and they host Robert Morris on Saturday and the Tigers managed a tie and a loss to the Pioneers.

The Falcons are 4-0-0 at home and are 1-2-0 on the road. Since this is basically a cross town game, are they really on the road?  The Tigers have been off to a sluggish start going 1-6-1 so far.  I’m going with the visitors here.  FALCONS WIN

UND hockey: Wednesday Links - It's cold and flu season

Again, this guy doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. It's blog I've never read, except last year, when BU played UND. Just for the record, I do think that BU is a great hockey program.

If you want to read a good BU fan blog, read this one from my friend Matt Dresens.  I don't know a western school that doesn't take the bus, to and from hockey games. UMD is five hours away from Grand Forks, ND, down highway two and they will be busing to UND this weekend. Busing is an non-issue with the UND hockey players.

I guess for some reason this particular BU fan has an issue with it. I don't know why he should have an issue with it. Some people should really worry about their own school like Boston University. Think about this, some of these players will go on to play in the minor leagues, they will take buses to their hockey games.

Sounds like the flu is ravaging the UND hockey team right now. Some players aren't in practice right now. We will know who can go as we get closer to game time on Friday night.

BCHL Linesman Knocked Out in Hockey Fight

They say that being a linesman in hockey is a dangerous job. Yikes! Here's the explanation from Neate Sager of Buzzing the Net. Also, the rules for fighting in junior hockey in Canada will be getting tougher. Starting in 2014-15, players that get into a fight, will receive a game misconduct and be removed from the game.
Buzzing the Net -- With 5½ minutes left in the third period, an all-out skirmish broke out along a half-wall between the Vipers and the Prince George Spruce Kings. Dumonceaux paired off with Prince George's Christian Weidauer. Linesman Ryan Dawson moved in between them to separate the players. Dumonceaux, who had his head down, tried to punch Weidauer, but instead decked Dawson, bloodying the official.

It was a mistake, but it's a very bad one that should lead to the 19-year-old Dumonceaux being suspended. Striking an official is a cardinal sin. It's an occupational hazard, but this seemed exceptionally bad.

UND Hockey a bunch of heathens because they bus to and from away games.

Apparently, UND hockey is above riding a bus to and from away hockey games if you were to believe in the mindset of one Boston University Blogger. In my two plus season of covering the team, I have never heard anyone complain about riding the bus.  Yeah, you can't make this up. This is coming from eastern teams that rarely travel very far for league games. The bus rides are actually faster in a lot of instances, they would have had to wait till the next morning to fly home. The bus they rode on, had beds, so they could sleep if they wanted.

The UND Athletic Budget breaks even when you look at revenues and expenses.

As you can see by the screen shots, UND athletics breaks even with their athletic department. The fact that the UND hockey program made 3,318,211.00 in ticket sales for FY12, is just part of the of the whole big picture.

NHL Hockey: Lightning Star Stamkos injured in loss to Bruins

This is a scary video. Tampa Bay will be without their superstar forward Steven Stamkos who was injured today during the second period of today’s game against the Boston Bruins.

The Tampa Bay Lightning forward broke his fibula when he crashed into the Boston Bruins goal post. Stamkos was taken off the ice on a stretcher and transported to a Boston Hospital.  Stamkos will undergo surgery to fix the broken fibula. Stamkos was also going to be a member of the 2014 Canadian Olympic team, that’s a huge loss for the Canadians.

Live thoughts from Omaha (RW77)

Hello everyone from the land of Corn.

Goon asked me to give my thoughts on the weekend since I went to both games and live in the great city of Omaha, NE.  What I saw was a mixed bag, but I assure you (since the haters are out in force) that what I'm about to relate is PURELY my opinion and my opinion alone.

The Venue and Atmosphere

If you live in Omaha, you get to see two venues for hockey:  CenturyLink for Mavs hockey and the Ralston Arena for Lancers (USHL) hockey.  CenturyLink is older than Ralston Arena.  CenturyLink is a better environment to watch hockey.  Sure, Ralston is newer and gets you closer to the ice.  One can argue that there really is no bad seat in the Ralston Arena.  But go to a Lancers game and you have an arena full of cow bells and vuvuzelas and NO ONE who has them knows when to silence them!  Not so at the CenturyLink.  I enjoy my time at the CenturyLink Center.  Great atmosphere and fun to watch hockey when you don't have endless noise flowing into your ear.

It seemed more crowded Saturday than Sunday.  Unfortunately, those who didn't come on Sunday missed a far better game (even if I say that knowing UND won).

The Goaltending

I have honestly NO IDEA what got into Gothberg Saturday.  No idea at all.  He was BRUTAL.  He reminded me of his first game as a freshman.  BIG rebound cost him the first goal and the other two was so fundamentally poor hockey play that I was honestly stunned Hakstol didn't pull him.  The second goal itself was one that I think even I could have stopped (and let me tell you, if I can make even ONE save facing DI players, that'd be a miracle!)!  The second one was simply a loss of focus.

Saunders tonight was far better and he had to be.  Why?  Because, in my opinion, UND played far more careless hockey Sunday than they did Saturday.  In the end, Saunders played VERY well and will certainly garner more playing time going forward.  I just wish I knew what the Sam Houston State was going on with Gothberg (and I know what the haters will say.  Too bad I don't care).

Massa for UNO was VERY solid and I'm surprised he didn't play on Sunday.  It turns out it was bad karma because UNO's starter, Thompson, caught the Gothberg bug and gave up two horrific goals (though to be fair the second goal he gave up was simply his defense abandoning him).

Game Play

On Saturday, we looked flat, imo.  We looked especially bad in the first period.  I thought we looked slow, behind the play.  Goon disagrees with me when I say that UNO was clearly the better team and was very solid at even strength.  I truly don't believe Massa was challenged that much.  To my recollection, Massa had to make two great saves and the rest of the night was largely unchallenged.

Let's face it:  I noticed a LOT more defensemen leading the rush on Saturday than on Sunday and ANY time you have a Dman leading the rush into the offensive zone that, to me, speaks VOLUMES about where we are at with our attack.

As for our power play, it still sucks.  IIRC, we only scored 1 goal on the powerplay all weekend.

Our Penalty Kill?  Both of UNO's goals on Sunday came on the Power Play.  Neither goals were weak as far as Saunders is concerned.  The first was where we gave them the center of the ice below the faceoff circles and the second was where we forgot about a man (Archibald) and gave him the center ice below the faceoff circles.  Imagine that.  They scored on both times.

Sunday was a FAR more entertaining game.  UND had to kill off 1:45 of a 5 on 3 PowerPlay after Grimaldi took a stupid penalty... I'd argue that Panzarella's penalty was also stupid.  It also had what had to be the most tense final 2 minutes of the game I've witnessed in quite some time.

The Officiating

I always get a different opinion of the officiating when I view it live at the arena rather than on TV or webcast.  I didn't think the officials were that bad.  I'm a bit baffled as to why UNO came away with a powerplay with 1:10 left in Sunday's game.  Pattyn and UNO #13 clearly deserved penalties.  So did UND's second of the altercation.  But I thought the other UNO participant should've gone as well.

Players that stood out or I thought would stand out:

Archibald (UNO):  I think he was one of the best players for UNO on Sunday.  I'm still a bit confused as to why he wasn't ejected on Saturday though.  He had a ton of energy and he reminded me at times of Mike Prpich.

Grimaldi (UND):  Boy, UNO fans don't like him.  UNO was trying to run him all game long on Sunday and Brady (UNO) nearly took himself off the ice with an injury because of it.  In the end, Grimaldi ended up being a sort of agitator... a role I didn't know Grimaldi was supposed to serve with UND.

Walters (UNO):  Ok, he factored in on one of the goals on Sunday but I didn't notice him much at all this weekend.

The MacMillans (UND):  Neither stood out to me.... at all.

Caggiula (UND):  I liked the way he played.  Drake and Rodwell impressed me with their aptness to crash the net.

Ladue (UND):  I'll always be a fan of Dmen that aren't afraid to shoot the puck, especially on the PowerPlay.  It started with Nick Fuher and it continues with Paul LaDue.  I LOVE IT when he shoots the puck.

Overall impressions of the Sioux:

We have a ways to go.  With the NCHC being like it is, though, I'm not sure how it is going to work out.  I'm not sure what to expect going forward.  I always hope for the best.  The tools are there.  How fast they mature and get into their stride is unknown.  It's going to be one helluva ride.  The fun times and the haters will make the season an interesting one for sure.

My player of the weekend is Drake Caggiula.  He was noticeable on both games.

T.J. Oshie does his best pretzel imitation

This was on T.J. Oshie's Twitter feed and I am not sure what happened here. The former UND forward is having a pretty good season and has scored (2g-10a—12pts) in 15 games.

Rocco Grimaldi is trending in Omaha, Nebraska

NCHC Age factor

I thought that I would explore this age factor further. Here’s the average age of each team of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference and the current standings.

NCHC Current Standings
1     University of Nebraska-Omaha, average age 21.9
1   Saint Cloud State University,  average age 21.9
3   Western Michigan University, average age 21.6
     Miami University, average age 21.1
5   University of Denver, average age 21.1
6   Colorado College, average age 21.1
7   University of North Dakota, average age, 21.2
     Minnesota Duluth, average age 21.3

The average age of a hockey player in the NCHC is 21.4 years old. Looking at the numbers, UND is right there, age wise, with the rest of the teams in the NCHC. Just for comparison sake, UMN average age is 20.9.

Finding a silver lining in a mountain full of garbage

This makes me very happy; the Boston Bruins continue their domination over the Toronto Maple Leafs. After the UND vs. UNO game, my wife’s cousin asked me what I thought and I told him, I was a fan of the Boston Bruins from 1988 to 2011 and I had to wait a long time to watch them win a Stanley Cup. I am not going to let this team ruin day. I am no too upset about this. This is just one part of the season. There’s a lot of season left. This is one game.

I must admit, I didn’t think that the season would play out like this, not with the players that this team has on the roster. So far, this team is under achieving and they’re really not doing much on the ice. Tonight they played better. I think it’s all minor things that the coaching staff will fix and fix quickly. If not, the coaching staff will sit the players that aren’t playing well and try another player.

As far as fixing what ails this team, It will happen either tomorrow night, next weekend, or soon. A Dave Hakstol team will not continue to play like this for very long. This is a coach that bag skated his team after they lost 1-0 to the BSU Beavers in November of 2011. If he doesn’t have their attention, he will soon.

I thought that UND played well against UNO tonight, In the second period. Bad goals have killed this team so far this season. I also think the goaltending has been poor all-season long. I also think that the forwards have been lazy getting the puck into the offensive zone and the defensemen have been doing things a step slow.

UND has lost four straight game for the first time since 2006. Something has got to give. So, their either going to get their act together and play well, or their going to get buried in the bottom half of the NCHC standings, time will tell. They have a tough schedule ahead of them in November.

UND football has hit rock bottom

I think we've hit rock bottom in Grand Forks, ND. In defense of the football team, it's a relatively nice day outside. Also, it's the deer hunting opener and a 2-7 and one win at home.

What the Heck is this?

Being an ex-veteran, I am not sure that I like this at all. It doesn't look good. Not with an military uniform. The US military's uniform is very serious. The rather austere décor of the US military uniform is softened by a goofy rodent tail. I am all for putting the tails on the cheer leaders though.

Kyle Rau charging penalty (Video)

You're the referee, you make the call. What penalty would you call in this situation? Of course Gopher fans are going to say that a two-minute penalty is the right call, but you have a defenseless player with his head down, engaged in the play and Gophers forward Kyle Rau comes from all the way across the ice to blast Notre Dame forward Vince Hinostroza. I think it's a senseless play. Hopefully Hinostroza is okay, it looked like he suffered a bit of whiplash on the play.

NHL Suspends Florida Panthers Jesse Winchester three games for dirty elbow on Chris Kelly

This was a very good call by the NHL's Department of Player Safety, this is an illegal check to the head. That fact that there wasn’t a penalty called on the play is a head scratcher. I didn't think Jesse Winchester would get three game for this bush league hit, but I applaud the decision. Players have got to eventually get the message that cannot make these hits anymore, it's no longer acceptable to do this.  There was no reason for Jesse Winchester to hit Chris Kelly in this situation, he's better off to let him go.

NEW YORK -- Florida Panthers forward Jesse Winchester has been suspended for three games, without pay, for elbowing Boston Bruins forward Chris Kelly during NHL Game No. 230 in Boston on Thursday, November 7, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Winchester will forfeit $9,230.76. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 4:52 of the first period. No penalty was assessed on the play.

LA Kings Matt Frattin fights Tyler Myers after a legal hit

This is one element that I don't like about the NHL. Whenever someone is hit with a nice crisp, hard, legal bone jarring check, there has to be a fight. This doesn’t even appear to be that hard of a check. Whatever happened to taking a number and hitting them later in the game? It’s called taking the license plate of the truck that hit you.  I think this is one instance where the instigator penalty needs to be given out more. Don't get me wrong I like a good fight. My nickname is goon.

Watch this hit,  Los Angeles Kings forward Matt Frattin is making a shoulder-to-shoulder hit on  Buffalo Sabres center Cody McCorrmick. If you watch the video, it doesn't appear that Frattin hits McCormick in the head, he comes close, but there doesn't appear to be any contact with the Buffalo center’s head. We can debate this point if you want, but take a look at the video.

Mind you McCormick is no small guy at 6'2 224 pounds and Frattin is the smallest of the three guys at 5'11 and 187 pound and he holds his own against Tyler Myers who is 6'6" 194. Maybe Myers is just mad because his team is 3-14? I don’t know.

Here's what I said over on Sioux Sports and I stand by it. "Myers comes over and challenges him to a fight and Frattin pounds him. Myers gets an extra two for holding. The Sabres are becoming a laughing stock."

Adam Pardy Loses his Helmet in the Stands

s/t the Chicago Tribune. This is a story that I saw on a few of the hockey blogs tonight. Winnipeg Jets defenseman Adam Pardy is checked into the glass by the Blackhawks Brandon Bollig. The glass is knocked out by the Bollig check. Pardy loses his helmet in a scrum to an unruly Blackhawks fan. You can actually see a fan wearing Pardy’s helmet while he’s sitting in his seat, in the tweet below from Chris  Kuc’s twitter feed, who’s a hockey writer for the Chicago Tribune. I guess there is a reason they call the United Center the Mad House on Madison. The Fan in question was ejected from the game.

Florida Panthers Jesse Winchester elbows Chris Kelly; no call

I love hard hitting hockey, I love a good fight, but this crap by Florida Panthers forward Jesse Winchester. This is a dirty hit,  the Florida forward throws a dirty chicken wing elbow on Boston Bruin's forward Chris Kelly. Come on! I believe dirty hits like this should cause a player to miss a minimum of one game. This should be an automatic suspension with what we know about concussions and head injuries. There no excuse for this crap.

There no excusing this hit. If a player has to lunge to make contact to hit another player, let them go. It was a dirty elbow. In my opinion, the refs blew this call.

Later in the game, Jesse Winchester would pay for his bush league hit by having to fight Bruins middle weight
Gregory Campbell. Gregory Campbell with the decision in the fight.

Here's a great read by Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston...
ESPN Boston: HEAD SHOT: The Bruins' Chris Kelly was on the receiving end of an elbow to the head by Winchester early in the first period. Winchester left his feet and caught Kelly in the head with the blow. Kelly remained on the ice for a moment and was tended to by team trainer Donnie DelNegro before skating off the ice and going to the locker room. Kelly seemed dazed but quickly returned to action. No penalty was called on Winchester, but the Bruins' Gregory Campbell took care of business when he dropped the gloves with Winchester on the ensuing shift.

NCHC Games

Denver vs Colorado College
Last weekend the Pioneers were swept by the UNO Mavericks by identical 3-2ot scores in Denver.  The Tigers were swept by the Broncos, 3-2ot and 5-1 in Kalamazoo.

Neither team can really afford to get swept again this weekend, especially in league play.  I’m guessing these longtime rivals will have no problem getting jacked-up for this home and home series.  Now it just comes down to which team wants that Gold Pan more. I’m going with a split, with each team winning at home.  SPLIT

#7 Miami @ #3 St. Could St.
Last weekend the RedHawks swept the Golden Griffins of Canisius, 3-0 and 5-2, in Oxford.  The Huskies swept NoDak last weekend, 3-2, 3-1, in Grand Forks.

Back on March 31st the Huskies ended the RedHawks season in the NCAA Midwest Regional and advanced to the Frozen Four.  I’m sure the RedHawks remember that and will use that as motivation this weekend.  The Huskies didn’t look like world beaters last weekend, but they did the job done.  This will be “upset” special, MIAMI 3-pts.

#11 North Dakota @ Nebraska-Omaha (Sat/Sun)
Last weekend NoDak was swept by the Huskies, 3-2 and 3-1, in Grand Forks.  The Mavericks swept the Pioneers in Denver with a pair of 3-2ot wins.

NoDak looked fairly average last weekend, solid defensive play, put not much offensive pressure.  The scoring needs to pick up for NoDak if they want some points, one or two goals a night won’t get you much.  The Mavericks with the scoring three goals in each of their games last weekend, gave them the wins, that and Josh Archibald scoring both overtime winners.  But UNO scored half of their goals on the power play, and NoDak is stingy on the penalty kill, only giving up 1 on 29 opportunities this season. SPLIT

Non-Conference Games

Northern Michigan @ Western Michigan (Sat/Sun)
Last weekend the Wildcats split with Nanooks 5-4L and 2-1W, in Fairbanks, Alaska.  The Broncos swept the Tigers, 3-2ot and 5-1, in Kalamazoo.

The Wildcats are 1-4-0 away from Marquette this young season and the Broncos are 2-1-0 at home.  No reason not to pick the home team in both games.  BRONCOS SWEEP
