Wild Defenseman Marco Scandella Has Hearing for Hit on Brock Nelson

I said this last night (See Below) that Minnesota Wild defenseman Marco Scandella did learn much from being fined. I think that Scandella will end up being suspended for his hit on Brock Nelson. Apparently, he has a thing for former UND hockey players.

Marco Scandella is lucky that he only got a fine for this hit. A $2800.00 fine is chump change to a guy like Scandella.

Minnesota Wild defenseman Marco Scandella has been fined $2,755.38, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for an illegal check to the head of St. Louis Blues forward T.J. Oshie during NHL Game No. 351 in St. Paul on Saturday, November 29, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

s/t to Bar Stool. I know this is a bit old. Nothing like a four-put from less than seven feet. Nice to see that T.J. Oshie is human like the rest of us. I actually did this twice in the last stroke play tourney that I played in, back in 2008. No one likes to be that guy.

I have to admit, that this has been the best series that I have watched during the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs. As a UND Alumnus, I couldn't be prouder of our ex-UND players that are currently playing in the NHL and making a big-time contribution on the ice.  Both T.J. Oshie and Jonathan Toew's goals were of the dirty variety. I am going to be compiling a collection of some of these goals.

Check out this goal from St. Louis Blues forward T.J. Oshie, he scores falling forward. Oshie's goal tied the score at 1-1. Check out the huge check that Ryan Reeves puts on Jonathan Toews prior to the goal.

Mike Rupp Hit on T.J. Oshie

Wild forward Mike Rupp was given a match penalty for this hit on St Louis Blues forward T.J. Oshie. According to the Blues, Oshie is listed as day-to-day. I think Rupp might get a few games for this hit, he's has a phone hearing with the Department of Player Safety.

NHL won't adopt T.J. Oshie Rule

According to Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy, don't count on the NHL adopting the T.J. Oshie Rule. I would say that I like this... It works great for International play.

Puck Daddy -- “Obviously, the one feature that’s different in international competition and the National Hockey League is the ability to use the same shooter in a game-winning shots competition,” said deputy commissioner Bill Daly on Tuesday, before the qualification round of the Sochi Olympic tournament.

“We haven’t even talked about that with our general managers at any point and time, but I would very surprised if the general managers would ever be supportive of that type of concept. It’s tough enough that they don’t like the shootout as it is.”

One of the reasons why the GMs would find the concept repellant: The idea that “shootout specialists” might need to be a consideration on their rosters. Which would be great news for the Linus Omarks of the world, but not something Daly sees the League’s team executives desiring all that much.

What is it with ex-UND hockey players and the shootout?

T.J. Oshie's game winning goal against Boston

Of all the people to beat my favorite hockey team, it had to be former Fighting Sioux forward  T.J. Oshie. Actually, Boston Boston overcame a 2-0 deficit to come back and tie the game in the third period. Before Oshie won it for the Blues in overtime.

T.J. Oshie, where's the puck?

Check this out. St. Louis Blues forward T.J. Oshie shoots the puck into the net and after a review, he's awarded the goal. Oshie is having a great season for the Blues, he’s tied for the team lead in points with (13g-32a—45pts). Oshie is headed to the Olympics this weekend to play for the US Olympic team.

This was on T.J. Oshie's Twitter feed and I am not sure what happened here. The former UND forward is having a pretty good season and has scored (2g-10a—12pts) in 15 games.

Former Sioux Oshie and Stafford make the Top-40 Fantasy Hockey Right Wing Rankings

First off, that is a pretty good selection of WCHA talent – in Top-40 Fantasy Hockey Right Wing Rankings – there are two Badgers, two Sioux and two Gophers – it’s a shame that the old WCHA is breaking up after this season and becoming the nWCHA.

That being said, I am not sure how anyone can rank Winnipeg Jets sand former Minnesota Gopher Blake Wheeler as the 15th best Right Wing in the NHL – even if it is just for fantasy hockey. Seriously and no really?

I would also question whether Wheeler is a better fantasy player than Dany Heatly, Drew Stafford or even T.J. Oshie for that matter. The reason I say this is that I watched him play for two and three quarter season with the Boston Bruins and a team just doesn’t trade away a first round draft choice unless his game is flawed.

I am speaking big picture here – like I mentioned in another blog post, I have watched a lot of hockey over the last 10-15 years and I have never seen a bigger bodied player in the NHL that was as soft as Blake Wheeler is. The Bruins wanted him to work on that aspect of his game as well. I would take Oshie just for the physical aspect that he brings to the game. In the fantasy hockey groups that I am in penalty minutes and hits have counted.

This isn’t a concept that also disappeared when he left the Boston Bruins either. This is what the a blogger from the Artic Ice Hockey Bettman's Nightmare, had to say about Wheeler.

Though not the kind of big-body player that plays the physical game, nor parks in front of the net, I think the pros far outweigh the cons with Wheeler's game. Did I mention he's not afraid to block some shots?

That begs the question, since we’re talking about right wings. I you had to pick a right wing as your first over-all pick for your fantasy hockey team, who would be your first pick? Why? My first pick would be Tyler Seguin because I think that he has an amazing upside.

Blues sign T.J. Oshie to five year deal - avoids arbitration

St. Louis Blue fans can rest easy, now that the Blue have signed "one" of their leading scorers former Fighting Sioux forward T.J. Oshie to a new five year deal. Last season, Oshie tied for the team lead with 54 points.

With the signing, Oshie also avoids having to go to an arbitration hearing that was scheduled for Friday.  According to Andy Strickland, beat writer for the St Louis Blues, Oshie's salary is worth 4.175 a season for five years for 20.875 million dollars. That's a pretty healthy raise for Oshie who had signed a one year deal last summer that paid him $2,350,000.
