Andrew MacWilliam hit on Ahti Oksanen

This is the video of  UND defenseman Andrew MacWilliam's hit on BU defenseman Ahti Oksanen that earned him a five minute major and a game misconduct. [Click to watch video]

From watching and reviewing the video "it appears to be" a shoulder to shoulder hit, It was in my opinion a very questionable five minute major. Of course if you’re a BU fan you applaud the call, if you are a fan of the team in the green and white, you probably don’t like the call very much.

I think that Oksanen should win an academy award for his performance, because the on ice officials bought it hook, line and sinker.

Obviously, the hit was late was but there was definitely a late whistle as well – Oksanen actually shot the puck on the UND net after the whistle. Oksanen laid on the ice like he was hurt badly and then some how miraculously recovered on the bench – well enough of course to come back during the five minute power play and score a goal for BU, his first of his career.

Discussion and thoughts? I thought the officials had a tough night and I am glad that UND is moving on from the WCHA where “hopefully” we won’t have to deal with the Shepherds (X3) or Marco Hunt for that matter.

Shot charts for 11/02/2012 and Misc stuff

s/t to “Stats on Crack” for the shot charts. Connor Gaarder was the first UND hockey player since Matt Frattin and Jason Gregoire both scored hat tricks in a 8-0 win against Michigan Tech University on March 11, 2011.

North Dakota once referred to as a bunch of goon’s by fans of various WCHA teams is ranked 53rd over-all nationally for penalty minutes. That means, out of 59 NCAA teams UND is ranked 53 and only has 50+ team above them that have more penalty minutes, the halos from Minnesota are ranked 59th.

WCHA teams in the top 10 for penalty minutes are UMD 4th, Minnesota State 5th, Denver 7th. Rounding out the top 20 are Michigan Tech 17th and Saint Cloud and Bemidji State are tied for 20th.

According to the Boston Hockey Blog, the now famous Ben Rosen Defenseman/forward was benched last night for breaking a team rule, Parker said.

BU Freshman Matt O’Connor will start in goal for the Boston University Terriers tonight.

North Dakota bites Terriers 4-2.

Originally posted at the Hockey Writers - Combine.

Grand Forks, ND – Earlier this week, Ben Rosen tweeted upon arriving in Grand Forks, “just landed in North Dakota… nothing out here but 4 points.”  That’s not going to happen because UND took game one from the Terriers 4-2.

After the game Rocco Grimaldi was asked about the tweet in question.
“I don’t know, I guess they can say what they want, Grimaldi said.  “Obviously, it’s a little added motivation, I know I retweeted it because it’s something that I look at – we all saw it – we want four points – so obviously I wouldn’t want any of our guys on our team saying that. That’s what social media does, you can say things you want and get blasted for it and I know how that goes, it’s not that big of deal and he can say what he wants I guess that’s fine.”

It had been a long time since the University of North Dakota had last played BU in Grand Forks.

How long you ask?

The last time the two teams played a series at the “old” Ralph Englestad Arena in Grand Forks; Chris Drury was a member of the Boston University Terriers (December 26th & 27th, 1996).

UND would go on to win 6-4 and tie 2-2 against the Terriers in an exciting two game series.  The two teams would play again during the final game of the 1997 NCAA Frozen Four where UND would again win 6-4.

Since the 1996-1997 season UND has a 3-2-1 record against the Terriers.

Make that 4-2-1 after UND’s win tonight.

Over the fifteen year period, UND and BU played to some great games along the way and tonight was no different, as the game was a hard fought contest from start to finish.

Boston University came out of the gate pretty hard and took the play to UND and got a lot of chances early. The Terriers took an early lead on goal by Danny O’Reagan at the 16:52 mark of the first period.

UND junior goalie Clarke Saunders would keep UND in the game as BU was pressing and he made some big saves when UND needed him to early in the game.

After coughing up an early lead, sophomore walk-on forward Connor Gaarder would go on a tear as he started the scoring for UND early in the second period at the 01:11 mark.

But Gaarder wasn’t done – he scored two more goals – one more in the second period and then added the game winning goal in the third period after BU freshman Ahti Oksanen (Kirkhonummi, Finland) had tied game in the second period on the power play with a goal while UND was killing a five minute power play.

That was all the scoring that the Terriers would get as the UND forward kept the Terriers pinned in their own end.

If you had over looked or are unfamiliar with Connor Gaarder, he is a walk-on player that committed to UND after J.T. Miller de-committed from the University of North Dakota during the 2011 summer. Last season, Gaarder played in 33 games for UND and scored  (4g-6a—10pts). This season, Gaarder is off to a great start and is second on the team in points with (3g-2a—5pts).

During the postgame press conference, Connor Gaarder came out holding onto a Vancouver Canucks hat that was thrown on the ice by one of the 11, 589 fans after the scored his third goal of the game.

“I got my pick of one hat, so I got that here and I will see if I like any others,” Gaarder said. “I got this for Knighter [Corbin Knight], I probably give that to Knighter… he is a big Canucks fan.”

This was Connor Gaarder’s take on getting a hat trick in tonight’s game.

“It felt good,” Gaarder said. “BU is a great team, nice to get the win tonight, it was a big battle and were looking forward to tomorrow night and we’re going to have to match the intensity.”

UND head coach Dave Hakstol was impressed with his walk-on’s effort tonight.

“He’s a good hockey player,” Hakstol said.  “He goes to those hard areas – he’s not the only one that played a good hockey game tonight – but obviously he was a key player – that’s the type of player he is, he’s just a hockey player – he’s a gritty kid that goes to those greasy areas. Coming off of probably not his best game Saturday night he had a good week of practice and he carried it over to a good game tonight.”

UND also dodged a bullet when they had to kill a five minute major penalty that lead to BU’s power play goal. Head coach Dave Hakstol said that he was pleased that they only gave up one goal on the five minute major to Captain Andrew MacWilliam.

BU head coach Jack Parker thought that his team took too many penalties and it wore them down.

“Really exciting game obviously,” Parker said. “There was a lot of great chances. I thought the penalties wore us down as the game progressed. We got the five minute major on the power play and I got the feeling some of the calls might go the other way for them once they gave us a five minute major. I thought we just had to kill too many penalties the game winning goal was on a five on three; they had other really good chances though too. I thought as the game progress we got a little tired, it seemed to me a couple of time we killed penalties on them, just as the penalty was over we got our fifth on the ice or sixth skater on the ice and we never got out of the zone for another thirty seconds or forty seconds we really struggled with that so we made a couple of mistakes with the pucks that kept them alive and kept them alive and that kind of just wore us out. We didn’t generate much offense the second half of the game.”

The same two teams play tonight, but only one team has a chance at “4” points.

It's official – NHL cancels the Winter Festival and the Winter Classic

National Hockey League Players' Association
National Hockey League Players' Association (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
This just got real…
Katie Strang and Craig Custance, ESPN.com --- The NHL also canceled all of the Winter Festival events scheduled for Dec. 16-31 at Comerica Park in Detroit.

The league was tasked with a unique challenge this year in building two rinks -- one at "The Big House" and one at Comerica Park -- and has a contract with the former that requires the NHL to pay for any expenses occurred by the university if the event was canceled later than Nov. 2. The NHL also owed $250,000 of the $3 million rental fee on Nov. 2.

This is not believed to be the biggest deal-breaker, however.

The league did not want to host such an event without the usual bells and whistles -- HBO's "24/7"show documenting the event would've been virtually impossible to pull off -- and it did not want the pageantry of the event tainted by the work stoppage.

"That's one of those things that you were really looking forward to this year," said Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall. "Everyone here, not only the players but the fans. Everyone would be bummed out."
Can you imagine being one of the college hockey teams that was going to play outdoors in the winter classic for the Great Lakes Invitational? Actually, it would be a major downer to be one of those teams (Western Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech) that was set to play in Comercia Park on December 28-29, 2012. Now since the NHLPA and the NHL Owners can’t settle their differences this will be all for not. Of course, they moved the tourney indoors but it won’t be the same.

Winter Classic to be cancelled

Michael Russo, beat writer for the Star Tribune also said on tweeter today the Winter Classic is dead. Russo is one of the most in tuned beat writers for an NHL team and if he says that the Winter Classic is going to get cancelled, I will believe that it’s true as well.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP)--- A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the NHL has cancelled the 2013 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Friday because the league had not yet announced the cancellation of its signature event. The person also the NHL will schedule its next Winter Classic at the iconic stadium that seats more than 100,000 people.

Last week, the NHL wiped out all of its previously scheduled games through the end of November.

Detroit and Toronto, two of the league's Original Six teams, were going to play outdoors on Jan. 1 at the stadium known as the Big House. The league was hoping the matchup would break the world record for hockey attendance. Michigan and Michigan State's hockey teams drew a record 104,173 fans in 2010.
Nice to see that the NHL is finally becoming the No Hockey League... One has to wonder if and when will the two sides finally put their differences aside and come to an agreement so we can have an NHL season. It's obvious that the NHL Owners are trying to get the NHLPA to crack and I don't see it happening this time around.

Game day Links – BU and UND

The much anticipated series between the Boston University Terriers and the University of North Dakota is upon us. This “should be” the marquee matchup of the weekend so the college hockey world will have it’s eyes focused on Grand Forks this weekend.

Yesterday, senior forward/defenseman Ben Rosen (Syosset, New York) started the series off with the following tweet above. I fully expect that Ben Rosen will hear it tonight from the student section and the fans and if I can remember I am going to try and bring my camera to the arena tonight and take a few pictures of the signs.

Just for the record, in case anyone is interested, Rosen’s career numbers are (4g-7a—11 pts) in 79 career games.

Here are the regional sites and dates for 2014 NCAA Hockey Tourney. As you can see, the Minnesota Gophers gets to host yet another NCAA Regional right in their back yard.

• East Regional: Webster Bank Arena, Bridgeport, Conn., March 28-29
• Northeast Regional: DCU Center, Worcester, Mass., March 29-30
• Midwest Regional: U.S. Bank Arena, Cincinnati, March 28-29
• West Regional: Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, March 29-30
• Frozen Four: Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, April 10 and 12

Here is what Tyler Buckentine from USCHO had to say about this weekend’s series.
No. 12 Boston University (3-1) at No. 5Chris Dilks from Western College Hockey’s take on the tweet from Ben Rosen North Dakota (2-1-1)

Joe: With all due respect to the two Alaska schools, North Dakota faces a serious step up in competition this weekend against the Terriers. That said, I expect UND, sparked by Rocco Grimaldi and Danny Kristo, to respond with two strong performances, which will still only be enough for a series split against the perennial Hockey East contender.

Tyler: UND still getting its feet under itself in a loss to Alaska and a tie at home to Alaska-Anchorage and now its hosts the most talented team its seen to this point. UND has a lot of talent up front but the Terriers have a hot goalie – freshman Matt O’Connor with a .945 saves percentage and didn’t allow any of the four goals, playing half the game against New Hampshire. This weekend will tell us a lot about where UND is at. The home team will beat BU, it isn’t ready to sweep a team like the Terriers.
Here is what Roman Augustoviz from the Star and Tribune had to say about this weekend’s upcoming series between BU and UND.
Boston University (3-1, 3-1 Hockey East) at North Dakota (2-1-1, 1-0-1): The Terriers swept a home-and-home series with UMass last weekend, winning 5-2 and 3-2. ... Sophomore forward Cason Hogmann has a team-high six points on three goals and three assists. Teammate Wade Megan, who had a team-high 20 goals last season, also had three this fall. ... Freshman goalie Matt O'Connor is 3-0 for BU with a 1.75 gaa and a .954 save percentage. ... Terriers coach Jack Parker has 879 wins in his 40th season. ... North Dakota beat Alaska Anchorage 4-1 and tied the Seawolves 3-3 in overtime last weekend. ... UND is 9-0-2 in its last 11 games at The Ralph. ... UND senior Corban Knight had two goals last weekend and has 99 career points. Prediction: UND sweeps
Chris Dilks from Western College Hockey and this is his take on the tweet from Ben Rosen's tweet in question.
Boston University at North Dakota

Boston University defenseman Ben Rosen added a little spice to this series when he had the audacity to tweet that the flat, boring place he was in was a flat, boring place. The fact that that caused any controversy proves Rosen's point, in an extremely meta-way.

The BU hockey team had no trouble making it out of Boston after Hurricane Sandy, with Boston's airport re-opening midway through the week. For the Terriers, freshman Matt O'Connor has won the starting goalie job, and has some outstanding numbers on the season. Sophomores Cason Hohmann and Evan Rodrigues are the two biggest scoring threats for the Terriers.

Canisius forward Matthew Grazen has been suspended for seven games for a hit on Air Force Academy’s George Michalke.

Edit: BU lands at the GFK airport; Game one

The University of North Dakota's weekend opponent has landed at the Grand Forks International Airport (GFK)... Four point huh? Wait, what? This could turn out to be a really fun series. No series against the Gophers no problem, UND and BU are going to play in a four game series over the next two seasons.

Thursday links and tweets...

Good morning to you... It's day 47 of the NHL lockout and it looks like nothing is happening really... It looks like the NHLPA and the NHL Owners are talking but nothing really official or with any substance. Also, it appears that some of the players are starting to feel the pinch of the lockout and wondering if the lockout will kill their hockey careers.

This is what Shawn Thornton told Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com.
“I’m worried. Financially I’ve made some pretty good money the last couple of years. So I’m not hurting, but I’m definitely concerned that I don’t have any paychecks coming in at this point,” said Thornton. “For guys like me I have a few years left and I’m kind of caught in the middle and squeezed out on both sides. If this goes on for a year or two then I’m probably done and I have to go back to working for a living.

“That’s fine. I’ve done it before. I worked in a steel factory when I was younger. But on the other side I’d like to play out the last two years of my contract and be a little bit ahead after fighting 400 times over the last 15 years.”

According to some of the tweets that I have seen in my twitter feed today, It looks like Friday is the day that the Winter Classic gets cancelled. Also, no news is not good news...

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

Western Collegiate Hockey Association logo
Western Collegiate Hockey Association logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I think we can safely say that the WCHA season is officially under way.  Interesting that the there was not on split on the weekend, either sweeps or three points.  Another note, is that it appears the BSU still has UNO’s number, perhaps the Mavericks should ask the Beavers to give it back J

WCHA Games

#18 St. Could St. @ #3 Denver
Last weekend the Huskies swept the MSUM Mavericks, by identical 5-1 scores in St. Cloud and the Pioneers swept the MTU Huskies, 5-1 and 5-2 in Denver.

Even though it is just the second conference series, this is the battle for top billing in the WCHA.  The Pioneers and Huskies sit atop the standings with four points each.  A sweep by either team would keep them on top for at least another week.  It would also give them an excellent start to the season.  I’m going to hope for a couple of wild shoot out games.  These games could be electrifying, since both teams put up 10 goals last weekend.  SPLIT

Nebraska-Omaha @ Michigan Tech
Last weekend the Mavericks got one point (3-3, 2-3) from the BSU Beavers in Omaha and the Huskies were swept by the Pioneers (5-1, 5-2) in Denver.

This series could already be the old cliché, “You can’t win the title in the first half, but you can lose it.”  MTU can’t afford to get swept in back to back weekends, especially when they are at home this weekend.  The Mavericks also need to get some points this weekend, if they want to stay out of the bottom spots.  If the Huskies play like they did against the Gophers a couple of weeks ago, they should get a win or two this weekend.  SPLIT

Minnesota State vs #2 Minnesota (home and home series)
Last weekend the Mavericks were swept by the SCSU Huskies (5-1, 5-1) in St. Cloud and the Gophers tied the US U-18 team and beat Canisius 1-0 in Minneapolis.

The Mavericks got pounded by the Huskies last weekend, which was MSUM Mike Hastings first series as a head coach in the WCHA.  I bet he was hoping for a little more love from his alum mater (SCSU in 1993).  With the #2 ranked Gophers playing them this weekend, it doesn’t get any easier for him.  The Gophers need to forget about Sunday’s game (after scoring 12 seconds into the game they went scoreless on their next 41 shots).  I’m not sure either, how much that Sunday matinee game might throw off their schedule… thus I’m going with the home teams to win.  SPLIT

Colorado College @ Wisconsin
Last weekend the Tigers were swept by the Big Red of Cornell (2-0, 3-2) at Cornell and the Badgers took three points from the Bulldogs (2-0, 2-2) in Duluth.

The Badgers are playing their first home games of the year this weekend at the Kohl center in Madison.  The Tigers are on a three game losing skid, after winning their first three games to open the season.  This series will like be the last between the two in Madison for some time with the two teams going to different conferences next year.  It appears the Badgers are gaining momentum after last weekend while the Tigers are losing it.  With that on my mind, I’m going to call the series for the Badgers, 3-pts.

Non Conference Games
#12 Boston U. @ #5 North Dakota
Last weekend the Terriers swept Massachusetts (5-2, 3-2) in a home-and-home series and NoDak took three points from the Seawolves (4-1, 3-3) in Grand Forks.

This will be the Terriers first visit to the new Engelstad Arena.  The Terriers last visit to Grand Forks was in December 1996.  NoDak leads the all-time series 11-7-1, and BU is winless in their last 6 games in GF, going 0-5-1.  The last time BU and UND played was Oct. 2008 in the IceBreaker in which BU won 5-1.  The BU coach Jack Parker is now in his 40 year with the Terriers, that is quite a accomplishment in this day and age.  Last year BU had the nation’s best road record, 11-4-1.  Looking at all the numbers this should be a pretty even series, but having the home ice advantage, I have to give the nod to Nodak.  UND wins and ties.
