Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

Last weekend the college hockey season un-officially got underway, with a slate of exhibition games.  None of the WCHA teams lost however there were a couple of ties.

Non Conference Games

Clarkson @ Colorado College
The Golden Knights (ECAC) invade the World Arena this weekend for a pair of games against the Tigers.  I’m sure the Knights hope they will be the ones holding the Tigers under siege and not the other way around.  The Tigers started out last season on a hot streak and their fans are hoping for another fast start.  Tigers Sweep.

Minnesota State @ Alabama-Huntsville
The Mavericks hit the road to start the season and they hit it with a lengthy trip.  The Chargers are the lone independent team (I know Penn State starts this year as an independent, but I don’t count them since they are new.) in the college hockey world; hopefully a nice conference will adopt them next season…  Last year the Chargers had season to forget, they went 2-28-1, in their games.  Mavericks Sweep.

Ohio State @ Minnesota-Duluth
The Buckeyes from Columbus will make a trek to scenic Duluth to start their last season as a CCHA team before moving to the big ten conference.  Last season OSU finished the season 15-15-5, it doesn’t get any more even than that.  The Bulldogs have been good at home in their new arena and I expect them to add to their win total there this weekend.  Bulldogs Sweep.

Michigan State @ Minnesota
The Spartans come to Minneapolis, for a weekend series, to kick off their non conference schedule.  Next year this will be a conference game as both teams will head to the new big ten hockey conference.  With all the returning talent the Gophers have, you would expect them to win this series.  Gophers Sweep.

St. Could St. @ New Hampshire
Coach Motzko and his team of Huskies mush their way across the country to New Hampshire to begin their 2012 campaign.  Last year the Wildcats finished 11-14-2 in Hockey East and 15-19-3 overall, so they were down a bit from normal, while the Huskies finished 12-12-4 in the WCHA and 17-17-5 overall, they were even stevens.  I’m going to wimp out and call this series a SPLIT.

Northern Michigan @ Wisconsin
The Wildcats from Marquette head down south to Madison to take on the Badgers.  Last season the boys from NMU finished 11-11-6-3 in the CCHA and 17-14-6 overall, compared to the guys from UW who went 11-15-2 in the WCHA and 17-18-2 overall.  I’m inclined to call this series even based on last year’s numbers.  SPLIT.

Exhibition Game

US U-18 @ North Dakota
The USA development team travels to Grand Forks this year to take on NoDak.  The last time they were in GF was back in December 2010, when the Sioux won 2-1 in that game.  UND will most likely be playing everyone that is dressed to play, to get everyone some ice time and experience.  ND Wins.

US U-18 @ Bemidji State University.  BSU Wins.

IceBreaker Tournament (Kansas City, Missouri)

Nebraska-Omaha vs Army
The Mavericks could be considered the home team in this contest, give their proximity to this tournament.  Given that last season the Black Knights finished 4-23-7 overall, I have to give the advantage to UNO in this tilt.  Mavericks Win

Notre Dame vs Maine
The Irish finish the 11-12 season with a 19-18-3 overall mark, and the Black Bears owned a 23-14-3 overall mark.  I’m going with the Black Bears to chase off the Irish.  Maine Wins

Thus that gives me UM vs UNO for the championship, I’ll take the Black Bears to win the tournament.  Then that leaves ND vs Army, and I’ll take the Irish in that game.

Kendall Hockey Classic (hosted in Anchorage, Alaska)

Canisius vs Alaska-Anchorage
The Golden Griffins from Buffalo, NY finished last season with a 10-22-4 overall record.  The Seawolves finished the 11-12 campaign with a 9-25-2 record.  I’ll pick the home team here.  Seawolves Win

Air Force vs Alaska
Last year the Falcons from Air Force won the Atlantic Hockey regular season title with a 15-6-6 AH record and where 21-11-7 overall.  The Nanooks from Fairbanks, didn’t fare as well, going 8-16-4 in the CCHA and 12-20-4 overall.  Falcons Win

Then the teams switch in this tournament –

Canisius vs Alaska – I’ll take the Nanooks in this Saturday game.

Air Force vs Alaska-Anchorage – I’ll take the Falcons in this game.

Wisconsin freshman Nic Kerdiles suspended for one year by the NCAA

Kerdiles is a highly touted incoming freshman forward and was one of the better players on the U.S. National Under-18 Team last season; unfortunately, he has been suspended by the NCAA for one year.

According to Andy Baggott, beat writer for the Wisconsin Badgers; the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team could end up losing their highly talented freshman winger Nic Kerdiles for a year for a violation of the NCAA’s amateurism rules.
Multiple sources in the NHL and college hockey indicate the NCAA acted on photos and postings made public via social media that involve an agent and took place leading up to the NHL Entry Draft in June.

It’s not clear what specific issues led the NCAA to rule against Kerdiles, an 18-year-old from Irvine, Calif., but the Bucky’s 5th Quarter website culled a photo from an agent’s Twitter account that showed Kerdiles and two of the agent’s clients holding glasses that advertised a specific energy drink.

The photo could be construed as Kerdiles being marketed by the representative as well as being used to promote a specific product.

The agent who posted the energy drink photo, Toronto-based Ian Pulver of Pulver Sports, didn’t return a phone call seeking comment Monday.
This would be a major hit for the Wisconsin Badgers, according to Andy Johnson of Bucky’s Fifth quarter, Kerdiles is one of the top incoming recruits in the country this season and was expected to challenge for a spot on the Badgers top line.  Losing Kerdiles would be a major hit for the Wisconsin Badgers who have been picked by some to finish in the upper half of the WCHA standings this season.

Of course the University of Wisconsin is appealing this unprecedented decision. According to a tweet by Baggott the NCAA isn’t even going to hear Wisconsin’s Appeal this week.
Here is the kicker, you would think since Kerdiles has been suspended by the NCAA he could just go back and hone his skills in junior hockey and serve his suspension while he’s playing Junior hockey – he can’t – Kerdiles has to serve the suspension on the Wisconsin campus.

So, it would appear that a blue chip player like Nic Kerdiles isn’t going to sit idle for a season – the home town Anaheim Ducks who drafted Kerdiles in the second round 36th overall aren’t going to want him to sit around idle for a season, waiting to play Division I college hockey.

I would imagine that the Ducks are going to want him to continue playing hockey and you have to wonder if the CHL will be Kerdiles’ next destination.  Kerdiles rights are owned by the  Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League.

It will be interesting to see how this story develops.

More on Edina's Anthony Walsh.

Earlier this fall, I profiled Anthony Walsh who is a hockey player from Edina, Minnesota.

Anthony is going to be a senior this winter for the Edina Hornets. Currently, Walsh is playing Major Midgets hockey for the Minnesota Blades which is a Triple AAA team.

Walsh competed in the High Performance Hockey League Showcase in Detroit, Michigan this past weekend. The Minnesota Blades swept the 3 games that they played in and Walsh a hat trick and an assist on the weekend.

In my opinion, I think that Walsh is developing into a gifted power forward. While Walsh statistically might that started his junior season with the Edina Hornets slowly, he has gotten hot since the Minnesota State High School Tourney. I think it will be interesting to see how his senior season with Edina goes.

I really like this goal, while being slashed on the back of the legs and the defender actually breaks his sticks on the back of Walsh's leg, the young forward is undeterred and scores.

Wednesday press update for UND Men's hockey

Originally posted at the Hockey Writers - Combine.

Today, I attended the UND media day for Men’s hockey and these are some of the quotes that I got from the head coach and a few of the UND hockey players.

UND Head coach Dave Hakstol was asked the specifics that his team needs to improve upon.
“Our play away from the puck,” coach Hakstols said.   “Our play without the puck has to improve.”
Coach Hakstol was asked about sophomore forward Michael Parks who suffered a lower leg injury during the third period of Saturday’s exhibition game against the Manitoba Bison.

“I honestly don’t have any new information than what I had on Sunday and Monday,” Coach Hakstol said. “We’re going to re-evaluate him on Friday and I think that will tell us a little bit more that we need to know he certainly won’t be available this weekend.”

Coach Hakstol was asked where red-shirt freshman forward Rocco Grimaldi and where he is going to play this weekend.

“I don’t know yet, Hakstol said. “He might play center, he might play left wing or he might play right wing. I am not trying… I don’t know exactly what we’re going to set for combinations for Friday. So far in practiced this week, he has played left wing as well as center. So were going to go with… probably, likely we will set our lines tomorrow for Thursday’s practice going into Friday’s game. But I am 100 percent set yet on exact line combinations, were going to mix it up, he’s going to play a lot of different position during the season.”

Senior defenseman Andrew MacWilliam had off season shoulder surgery and sat out the first exhibition game against the Manitoba Bison. Coach Hakstol was asked on whether defenseman Andrew MacWilliam is going to play this weekend.

“We will wait till Thursday, coach Hakstol said. “I think there’s a… he’s doing really well – potentially he could play one game even low minutes this weekend and up in Alaska and go up and play one game and that’s a great progression and get to play two games the following weekend and come back for our home opener – but we are going to give it all the time we possibly can before we make that final decision and that will probably be Thursday morning, he has practiced, he has had a regular practice jersey on for the last two weeks of practice – that tells me how close he is .”

Sophomore defenseman Nick Mattson was asked about his impression of the first exhibition game against the Manitoba Bison.

“I thought it was a good game,” Mattson said. Obviously there was a little rust and a few sloppy plays but overall it felt really good to get back on the ice and I think it’s pretty evident that we have some individuals that have a lot of skill and ability to make some plays but as a team we have a ways to go it was kind of expected. So it felt good to get back on the ice we’re looking forward to kind of improving and keeping things going here.

Senior forward Corbin Knight on whether freshman forward Drake Caggiula was going to stay on the top line with Knight and Danny Kristo.

“It’s up to the coach, I don’t know right now, Knight said. He played good there on Saturday and he made some plays. It’s up to the coach, I couldn’t tell you.”

Knight was asked about his impression of freshman Rocco Grimaldi’s play on the power play.

“He was good we didn’t get a whole lot of opportunities on the power play unfortunately,” Knight said. But from what we did, he is such a dynamic player; he makes stuff happen from anywhere on the ice. So… he is pretty impressive and it was fun to be on the ice with him.”

EDIT: Gone Duck Hunting

Donn aka Sioux7 and I are taking a much needed break before the college hockey season takes center stage. This week we will leave after the UND and Manitoba game to hunt some green head mallards and decompress. Personally, I think that’s a code word for slacking off and do absolutely nothing. Hopefully there isn’t a blizzard while we are up north and let’s hope that we finally have some good weather.

Next Friday, the University of North Dakota will play the United States Development Team Under 18 team from Ann Arbor, Michigan – Game time is 7:37 PM. This game will also be on Fox College Sports. This will give UND fans their first opportunity to see future UND Hockey player Keaton Thompson who is from Devils Lake, ND and wear number six for the U-18 team.

Do you recognized the voice of the narrator on Through These Doors? Let’s see if anyone can recognized the voice.

I don’t know if any of us have gotten used to the new logo at center ice just yet. It’s going to take a while to get used to it.

North Dakota shakes off early rust to beat the University of Manitoba Bison 5-3

Seal of the University of North Dakota
Seal of the University of North Dakota (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Grand Forks, ND – During the off-season, there have been a few well documented distractions for the UND hockey team but tonight, that focus finally changed to playing hockey.

Tonight, it was all about playing hockey as UND took on a very determined and pesky CIS team the University of Manitoba Bison.

In the past, UND has had a lot of success against the University of Manitoba. UND hasn't lost to the Bison since the 1949 season – tonight was no different as UND extended that streak (9-0 under coach Dave Hakstol) by shaking off some early season rust to beat the Manitoba University Bison 5-3 at Ralph Englestad Arena.

After the game head coach Dave Hakstol talked about his team’s play during their first exhibition game.
“I thought there was a lot of rust – lots of good effort – that probably was expected, Hakstol said. “I thought the sharpest part of our game was offensively, not a lot of cohesion defensively.”

Coming into this season, there are high expectations,  the University of North Dakota is looking to have a strong season based on who they have coming back, but also who they have coming in this season.

Although tonight’s game was only an exhibition game, the game can still be used as an audition for the players that are trying to solidify their position on the roster for the regular season – from what I have seen tonight – it would appear that the upcoming season looks promising for UND.

One of those bright spots was UND’s second line of Mark MacMillan, Carter Rowney and Michael Parks, that line looked like they picked up right where they left off from last season – that line scored the first and third goals for UND.

Coming up big for that line were sophomore forward MacMillian, who had a goal and an assist for UND. Senior forward Carter Rowney also chipped in a goal and two assists as well.

One problem from last season was that UND was bitten by the injury bug during the middle part of the season and couldn’t even fill out a full lineup by the end of the season.

That second line chemistry for UND might be broken up for an extended period of time – it appears that UND wasn’t able to get out of the first game unscathed as sophomore Michael Parks suffered what appears to be a lower body injury and left the game midway through the third period and didn’t return to the UND bench.

After the game head coach Hakstol was asked about the condition of his sophomore forward Michael Parks.

“Nothing definitive,” Hakstol said. “That something I am not going to comment on right now.”
After missing all but four games last season, redshirt freshman Rocco Grimaldi showed us why he was worth the wait – as he literally had the crowd on the edge of their seat each time that he the puck on his stick. Grimaldi’s is very strong on his skates and he has speed few players can match.

“It felt good, the knee felt good, I was just happy to get out there, Grimaldi said. I thought I started pretty well getting my chances and then kind of slowed down a little bit I am kind of upset right now so, it is what it is.”

Senior forward Danny Kristo gave his impression of the first game as well.

I thought it was a pretty solid game we worked on some stuff we want to work on, Kristo said. Manitoba played hard, I thought we did a lot of things offensively, we have some stuff we have to sharpen up in the d-zone, neutral zone, turnovers, stuff like that you can expect this time of the year, but over-all I thought it was good – good solid first game.”

Is there an end to the lockout in sight?

Yesterday, I was at home reading through twitter and this story piqued my attention and it got me thinking is one side starting to cave? Take it even further – are both side finally softening and coming to the realization that they can’t get an agreement if there isn’t any negotiating?
The Canadian Press --- The NHL and NHL Players’ Association quietly resumed contract talks Friday, one day after cancelling the first two weeks of the regular season.

Commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly travelled to Toronto on Friday and sat down with Donald Fehr, executive director of the NHL Players’ Association, and union special counsel Steve Fehr. Daly confirmed the meeting was held, but offered no further comment.

The sides are expected to touch base by phone over the weekend and set up another negotiating session next week.

The NHL lockout is heading into its fourth week and the first 82 regular-season games have been scratched from the schedule. In announcing those cancellations on Thursday, the league offered a conciliatory note to fans frustrated by the sport’s fourth work stoppage in 20 years
I know it takes two sides in a negotiation but having Gary Bettman represent the NHL owners doesn’t nothing for either side – I find him to be a very polarizing figure and If I was an Influential  NHL owner I would consider giving him his walking papers as a piece offering to the NHL fans and players.

When it’s all said and done – Bettman legacy is going to go down in history as being the Lockout commissioner.

UND Women’s Hockey the day after

From Sioux Sports this morning on the UND Women’s Hockey team losing a two goal lead and the game against the MSUM Mavericks… @pucknut9 on last night’s loss, “looks like the women have been reading too many headlines as they lose 3-2 to MSU.” Mea Culpa.
Also, another good point from @pucknut9 “hell of a comeback for sure, I mean give credit where credit is due instead of some of these posters blaming the refs.”
Good words of advice from a guy that I have a lot of respect for – winners will look answers and not excuses… In this case the UND women will regroup and make the proper adjustments and you didn't hear any excuses last night for their performance.
I am not going to kid anyone – I have to admit that I thought the officiating was questionable at times myself, someone from my twitter account might have tweeted something along those lines as well last night.
But I digress.
I don’t think the officiating is the reason the UND women lost the game last night… I blame a plethora of things… I saw young players try to force pucks in instances where later in the season they wouldn’t make that pass. There also many opportunities in the blue paint and in the slot that weren’t capitalized on.
When the refs are calling the game tight last night – what’s new?  It’s the player’s responsibility to make adjustments to how the game is called – that didn’t happened last night.
Also, the MSUM defenders were relentless and this was actually the first time that I have ever seen the “trap” played at a women’s game – the Mavericks were miserable team to play against.
Let’s give credit where credit is due the Mavericks got into the shooting zones – pressured the defenseman and their goaltender Danielle Butters was very good and made the big saves and stopping 18 out of 20 shots and she was big late in the game when she had to be… Luck was also on her side and one of the twins had her beat glove side late in the game only to see it puck clank off of the iron.
I can tell you based on the head coaches’ body language and by his comments last night during the postgame conference that Brian Idalski was “less” than pleased about his team’s play during their game.
“I thought we were a little sloppy and I thought we were way too cute and down the stretch we made some poor decision defensively that ending up costing us pretty big,”
I don’t think that any of us are worried though because Brian Idalski is a good hockey coach and he will make adjustments and I expect the team to be much better this afternoon against the Mavericks.
There were some positive points to take out of last night’s game.
Freshman forward Becca Kohler from St. Thomas Ontario is going to be a big time forward and she showed glimpses of greatness.
Freshman goalie Shelby Amsley-Benzie was very good in her debut and I predict that we will see her again between the pipes very soon.
Freshman Leah Jensen didn’t look out of place and seemed to do well in the pressure position playing on the wing with Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux.

Minnesota State slips past North Dakota 3-2

Grand Forks, ND – “I thought we were a little sloppy and I thought we were way too cute and down the stretch we made some poor decision defensively that ending up costing us pretty big,” UND head coach Brian Idalski on tonight’s game.

Coming into this season, there is a lot of positive energy surrounding the UND women’s hockey team based on the personnel they have coming back and some of the new recruits they have coming in.on’s post season run that included their first ever bid to the NCAA tourney. UND would go on to lose their quarterfinal game to Minnesota Gophers who would end up being the national champion.

UND has aspirations of hanging a banner of their own this season – “the ultimate goal is to put a national championship banner up in our rink,” Monique Lamoureux said during an interview on UND hockey media day.

While it’s probably too early to be about thinking about hanging banners and there is a lot of hockey to be played – the future for UND looks bright – UND will have to play more disciplined hockey if they’re going to be successful this season.

Tonight, UND came out of the gates with a lot of energy and definitely had the upper hand in play against the Mavericks during the first period taking a 1-0 lead in to the locker room after one period with a highlight reel goal by Jocelyn Lamoureux.

UND also led in the shots after one period of hockey outshooting the Mavericks 8-3 and could have had more goals but Mavericks Junior goalie Danielle Butters shut UND down.

UND took a 2-0 lead during the second period with a goal by Andrea Dalen at the 2:48 mark – that was all of the scoring that UND would get as Butters shut the door the rest of the way.

“Butters played well,” Idalski said. I thought for most of the night especially that second [period] we made her job real easy and she saw a lot of things and if she can see it she can save.”

One thing UND wanted to limit this season is the amount of penalties that they take as a team – unfortunately they started a parade to the penalty box during the second period when they took four minor for eight minutes in penalties.

That march to the penalty box continued during the third period as UND continued to take more undisciplined penalties and ended up squandering a 2 goal lead giving up three unanswered goals in about a 10 minute time period.  Minnesota State senior Lauren Smith paced the Mavericks with two goals during the third period scoring on the power play and even strength.

While Butters paced the Mavericks with 16 saves – on the other end of the ice a rookie goalie Shelby Amsley-Benzie was making her first career start UND but wasn’t able to get the win for despite making 20 saves, many  of them difficult and during the latter half of the game when the Mavericks were pressing.

When asked about his rookie goalie's effort the head coach had this to say, “quite honestly I thought Shelby was going to get the shutout,” Idalski said.

"She was playing really well and she kind of held us in there through the second, unfortunately I thought she deserved a little fate than what we gave her down the stretch.”

UND captain Jocelyne Lamoureux agreed with the head coaches’ comments, “she played good and she made some big saves when it was 1-0.”

Mankato would score three unanswered goals in the third period to ice the game, spoiling UND’s home opener.

The same two teams play tomorrow at 2:07 PM
