College Hockey takes center stage

Originally posted at the Hockey Writers - Combine
Obviously, the NHL Lockout has been a major buzz kill for NHL hockey fans so far this fall and there doesn’t seem to be a solution coming anytime soon – nor does either side seem like they have any incentive to reach a deal.
For most, the NHL has become the no hockey league where both sides don’t appear to be doing what any of us would consider serious negotiating.
This afternoon, I read a tweet on twitter from a ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun that the NHL owners are strongly suggesting that the NHLPA put forth some kind of a counter proposal to the NHL Owners –  not to be outdone of course  – the NHLPA asked the owners to come up with sometime as well. I just don’t think we’re going to get any kind of an agreement in the near future.

While the NHL owners and the NHLPA continue with their childish shenanigans  – the NCAA Division I college hockey season is upon us and starting this weekend there will be quite a few NCAA teams that will be playing their exhibition games against Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
While none of these games count in the standings, it’s a good way for  head coachs to evaluate their teams. Also, these game can serve as a measuring stick for the CIS teams that want to see how their teams compare against the NCAA Division I teams. The CIS teams also have many ex-CHL’s on their rosters that play in the CIS after they are done with their junior hockey eligibility.
Bonus Hockey

Starting tomorrow night, there is also going to be three official Division I hockey games. All three games are out east,  the Maine Black Bears of Hockey East take on the Quinnipiac Bobcats of Atlantic Hockey Association at Alfond Arena, Orno Maine.

Moving down the coast and west, the Falcons of  Bowling Green plays the Niagara Purple Eagles of the Atlantic Hockey Association in Dwyer Arena in Niagara New York and finally, Merrimack College of Hockey East plays against last season’s Frozen Four team Union College of the ECAC at the Achilles Center in Schenectady, N.Y. unfortunately, none of these games are on TV this weekend.
The only game that will be on this weekend is the University of North Dakota takes on the Manitoba Bison of CIS at the Ralph Englestad Arena in Grand Forks, North Dakota – that game is on FCS you can check your local listings for the channel,  the game is also on DirecTV 626  at  7:07  PM Central Standard Time – unfortunately Fox College Sports isn’t on Dish Network.

DU suspends two players

Low and behold this morning we find out that a little karma has finally swung the other direction. I was under the impression that only certain teams and programs have issues and players that get suspended – it appears that another WCHA program has suspended two players for a total of eight games. Funny, in checking my favorite DU fan blog there is nary a word of these suspensions. I am sure we’re going to see a bad boyz post on this matter soon though?
Michael Chambers; Denver Post --- University of Denver hockey players Larkin Jacobson and Juho Olkinuora have been suspended for four games for violating team rules, Pioneers coach George Gwozdecky said. The suspensions stem from separate incidents and will include Saturday's exhibition game against the University of British Columbia at the Pepsi Center.

Jacobson played in 22 of 43 games last season as a fourth-line forward. He did not produce a point. Olkinuora was outstanding in goal, leading the team in starts (19), minutes played (1,236), goals-against average (.924) and shutouts (two).

oth players will continue to practice with the team. Both are sophomores.

Depth is not a concern at goalie, with senior Adam Murray and junior Sam Brittain.
I am wondering if we will see some fan retract their statements or finally grab some perspective that from time-to-time college athletes get into trouble and pay for their transgressions via suspension. No one college sports program is immune from this.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

Ready… Get Set… GO…  And they’re off.

The good news, the regular season is starting, the bad news, there is the last season of the WCHA as we know it.  This is it.  Everyone has a chance to start their run to capture the big, shiny, MacNaughton Cup.

I hope everyone enjoyed the extremely hot and dry summer we had in the northern Great Plains.  I hope you are as anxious as I am for college hockey to get underway.  I try to improve my prognostication skills this season as it is the last WCHA season for many of the current teams.  Hopefully, you will enjoy reading my weakly (get it) attempts to make some type of educated guess as to who will win their games each week.

Just so we are all on the same page, here is a little refresher of how things ended last season…

2012 final 5 in St. Paul – recap

The Final 5 in St. Paul featured MTU, SCSU, UND, DU, UMD, and UM.

The WCHA tournament went like this – Thursday, DU defeated MTU 3-2 in OT, and UND defeated SCSU 4-1 – Friday DU beat UMD 4-3 in a 2-ot thriller, and UND defeat UM in an exciting 6-3 comeback win – Saturday UND defeated DU 4-0, to claim their 3rd consecutive Broadmoor Trophy.

This season the WCHA starts out with 5 teams ranked in the USCHO poll:

#2 – Minnesota
#4 – North Dakota
#8 – Denver
#12 – Minnesota-Duluth
#18 – Wisconsin
#20 – Colorado College

Exhibition Games   -   Saturday Oct. 6th

British Columbia @ Denver
I don’t know much about the guys from UBC, but they are from Canada so they should be a good team.  So I did some looking up on UBC, they are located in Vancouver, established in 1908, have 37,000 undergrads, 9,000 grad students, and they are nicknamed the Thunderbirds.  Since this is an exhibition game I’m sure DU will be playing some of the starters but will also be giving everyone some ice time.  I’m going with the WCHA to start the season and pick the Pioneers to win their first unofficial game of the year.

Brock @ Michigan Tech
Brock?  Who are they?  I had to look these guys up.  Okay here is the info; they are located in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada (close to Niagara Falls or just north-northwest of Buffalo, New York).  The University opened its doors in 1964, and is named for General Isaac Brock, who died in the War of 1812.  BU has a student body of approx. 17,000. And we all the 411 on Michigan Tech, so I’ll just move on.  Since I don’t know anything about BU, I’m going to pick the Huskies to win over the visiting Brock Badgers.

Regina @ Alaska-Anchorage
Ah Regina, the city that rhymes with fun!  I’ve never been to Saskatchewan, but someday I’ll get there.  They are still a long way from Anchorage, but I’m sure the flight isn’t that bad…  I’m going say the Cougars will blend into the UAA crowd, since their school colors are green/yellow/white.  I’m once again going with the home team Seawolves win.

Lethbridge @ Minnesota
I’ve actually been through Lethbridge!  It is a nice city in the southern part of Alberta, the Oldman river gorge on the west/middle side of town has spectacular views.  I also like their nickname, the Pronghorns (I think UND should be the Antelope or Pronghorns, just my two cents worth.)  UL has appox. 8,000 students and was founded in 1967, and their school colors are blue and gold.  The Gophers should be able to put goals on the board this year, so look for them to “unofficial” open the season with a win.

Manitoba @ North Dakota
The Bisons make their, what seems to be, annual trip to Grand Forks.  They didn’t play last year, but did in October 2010 with the Sioux winning that game 5-2.  I’m going to go with ND to win this game, I also expect to see a few guys playing goalie for ND in this exhibition game.

US U-18 @ Wisconsin
The U-18 team is usually full of talented young hockey players and can give teams older than them problems.  But the Badgers are always stingy on the defensive end of things, so look for them to frustrate the U-18 team.  Badgers win.

Exhibition Games   -   Sunday Oct. 7th

Manitoba @ Bemidji State
The Bisons head over to Bemidji, nice 120 mile drive on US-2, after playing in Grand Forks that night before.  This will be a good tune up game for the Beavers to unofficial start the season.  I’m going with Beavers in a squeaker of a game.

British Columbia @ Colorado College
The Thunderbirds head south for Colorado Springs after playing in Denver the previous evening.  The Tigers will have to be ready to since UBC will have played the night before.  I’m going with the Tigers in this tilt.  (UBC also plays Air Force on Monday night.)

Lethbridge @ Minnesota State
This will be the Pronghorns second game in two days, or the middle game of their 3 game road trip to the States.  I’m going with the visitors in this match-up, I just have a feeling that the Mavericks will be trying out their new players and coaching system.

Exhibition Games   -   Monday Oct. 8th

Lethbridge @ Nebraska-Omaha
Third game in three days for UL, I’m thinking they might run out of gas in the match-up.  Mavericks win their first exhibition game of the year.

Non Conference Games   -   Thursday Oct. 11th

Michigan Tech @ Lake Superior State
This will be the official first game for the Huskies as the face off against another Upper Peninsula team.  Huskies win.

UND Men's Hockey Media Day

ST PAUL, MN - JUNE 25: 33rd overall pick Rocc...
Orginally Posted at the Hockey Writers - Combine.

Today, I attended the UND Hockey media luncheon and press event that followed. I was able to interview a few of the UND’s players today and get some great quotes.

There is a lot of energy and enthusiasm surrounding this season’s UND hockey team, based on who is returning from last season’s squad and with who is coming in this season.

Head coach Dave Hakstol was asked about his team’s goaltending situation.

“I expect it to be highly competitive,” Hakstol said.

“Clarke Saunders has the most experience under his belt he has played a lot of minutes at this level but I expect it to be a very competitive position for us and we’ll let that competition play out in different levels the first ten days will tell us something – but also, throughout the season there will be a high level of competition at that position.”

Coach Hakstol was asked about what position defenseman/forward Joe Gleason will play this season.
“He’s is going to be a defenseman,” Hakstol said. “I expect him to be a defenseman solely a defenseman and I expect him to be a guy that gives us real quality minutes back there.”

Here is what coach Hakstol had to say about second year freshman forward Rocco Grimaldi’s health.
“I think he is very close to approaching that level of being 100 percent healthy, Hakstol said. “I don’t think he is there yet – I think it’s something he is going to have to play his way into during the early part of the season to this point everything has been going well.”

I was able to get a chance to interview Clarke Saunders individually. Saunder is a  junior goalie; who transferred from University of Alabama Huntsville to North Dakota during the off-season.
I asked Saunders about his expectations coming into this season.

“My expectations are, obviously if I play; to play well,” Saunders said. “If not to be the best teammate that I can… obviously we have a pretty good team this year – whatever my role might be – to do the best as I can.”

Clarke Saunders was asked what he thought about Ralph Englestad Arena.

“It is absolutely beautiful,” Saunders said. “I almost have to pinch myself every time I walk in here. All of us are truly grateful to be a part of this program and the Ralph is a specular piece of a long historic program that UND has.”

I asked Saunders about his style of play – in other words – what kind of a goaltender is he.

“I am a butterfly goalie,” Saunders said. “I feel I am decently strong positionally but also I have a bit of athleticism as well.”

Saunders was asked about his fellow goaltenders Zane Gothberg and Tate Maris.

“Zane’s a great kid, he works really hard and pushes me every day and not to forget Tate as well he an awesome guy; an older guy like me, he [Maris] brings a lot of maturity to the room I really, really get along well with both of the goalie partners and I think we have a really good group some of the guys poke fun at how close we are so that complements how well we work together.”

Senior Forward Danny Kristo was asked about his decision to come back for his senior year.
“It was a long process, it was stressful there for a while… it was kind of a different process than some kids have had to go through,” Kristo said.

“Montreal where I got drafted was going through a different time – they fired their general manager during the midst of my decision – which made it a lot harder – with the thoughts of an NHL lockout; obviously I think I would rather be playing, if I could be playing AHL or playing college, I would much rather be playing college with my friends, which I still feel like with our coaching staff and with our team this year I can still get better in practice and get better in games. I can still do that stuff ultimately that is what your goal is year-by-year is to get better and if I can still do that here, I don’t see… why not come back for a great senior year and hopefully go on a run at the end of the season to put up a banner. “

Here is Danny Kristo’s comments on UND’s scoring depth this season.

“This year is going to be different that last year,” Kristo said. “Last year we had a lot of scoring on our first line but I think if you look at how deep we are this year we’re going to have three scoring lines that are going to be able to score night in and night out and a really solid fourth line that can grind it out down low, so it’s going to be different that last year I think.”

I asked Danny Kristo if he had some unfinished business coming into the season.

“Definitely a sour taste in my mouth,” Kristo Said. “ I definitely didn’t want my last college hockey game… to be a loss against Minnesota, so I think a little bit sour taste but I think that year is over with it’s a new year were just looking forward to start the season off right, starting the season off with the excitement a lot energy on the ice, we got a healthy line up compared to the end of last year, so I think that everyone is excited to get out there.

Danny Kristo had this to say about the prospects of having a full roster.

“I think we have more competition in the locker room,” Kristo said. “I think that might be a little bit of a challenge for our team – at the end of last year we didn’t have a choice – the guys that were healthy – were the guys that were playing, there’s going to be a good battle for guys – they’re going to be battling for spots. I think that practice is going to be more competitive, cause if you’re not working hard in practice someone is going to take your spot.”

Rocco Grimaldi was asked what he thought about Danny Kristo not signing with the Montreal Canadians and coming back for his senior season.

I was excited I wasn’t sure if he was going to come back or not. I was excited obviously he made a good choice … not sure what’s going on with the lockout and everything. I think he is happy about the decision and it should be a good year for him.

Rocco Grimaldi on whether he will be playing this weekend.

Yeah I will be playing this weekend, Grimaldi said. I am feeling a lot better and that’s a good thing.
Rocco Grimaldi was asked if he is a little rusty after missing most of last season with a knee injury.
“I hope not,” Grimaldi said. I got a little bit of the rust out in preseason here with the practices and everything but I am feeling a lot better just about my game in general and getting my smarts back so it will be good to test it [knee] out in a game and get another game under my belt.

Rocco Grimaldi was asked, if he is going to play wing or center.

“We will see,” Grimaldi said. “I am not sure, I am not sure where I will be playing this weekend. Will see, I can do either it doesn’t matter.”

UND women's hockey; ready to make an impact nationally

United States forward Jocelyne Lamoureux in a ...

Today, I attended the UND Hockey media luncheon and press event that followed and I was able to interview a few of the UND Women’s hockey players today.

Here is what the Lamoureux twins Monique and Jocelyne had to say about the upcoming season.

I did learn a valuable lesson today, if you don’t turn your recorder on you end up interviewing the same player twice. I am also grateful, that Monique Lamoureux is a patient person.

I asked UND Senior forward/defenseman Monique Lamoureux about her expectations for the upcoming season.

“The ultimate goal is to put a national championship banner up in our rink,” Monique said.

“Jocelyne [Lamoureux] and I were looking it up earlier and I think today is the first official day of practice… the tradition here goes really deep with our family and I think that our brothers and our dad have been a part of 10 championships, whether it’s a McNaughton cup, a WCHA Final Five, or a national championship. For us it’s something that we really want to add to our family. We want to start a tradition on the woman’s side.”

On being the last of the Lamoureux’s to go through the UND hockey program.

“It’s bitter sweet being the last ones not having a brother here after having one playing on the team for the last eight years,” Monique said.  “It’s little weird not seeing your brothers around the rink as much but we’re excited for this year and we’re hoping to accomplish some great things.”

I asked UND Senior forward Jocelyne Lamoureux about her expectations for the upcoming season.

“Just want to make history for this program and the ultimate goal is obviously to win a national championship as is with every other team in the NCAA but that’s the goal this year more than any other year since I’ve been here,” Jocelyne said.

“I think we have the potential to do it; it’s just a matter of putting the pieces of the puzzle together.”

Jocelyne was asked about being the last two of Lamoureux’s to go through the UND Hockey program.

“Yeah it’s bitter sweet and we have some emotional moments,” Jocelyne said.

“Our brother took off last week for the east coast just knowing we’re the last ones here we’re the last ones to try and add to the tradition for our program and for our family and to have the opportunity this year again and we’re excited and we want to make the most of it. Just keep adding and staring a new tradition with the woman’s program.”

One Last time, NDSU makes their case for their athletes

I know this isn't hockey related but it's kind of a big deal to the people of North Dakota. I am also going to get back to covering UND hockey starting tomorrow when I go to the Hockey media luncheon, that I promise you.

This evening, NDSU head football coach Craig Bohl, Athletic Director Gene Taylor and University President Dean Bresciani addressed the Fargo media on why the North Dakota State University didn't suspend nine of the 10 players that plead guilty to violating North Dakota election laws. In other words, only one player is going to get suspended for basically screwing up a petition drive that Ducks Unlimited was going to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on promoting.

So, whether those in Fargo to include fans of the Bison Nation want to acknowledge this or not – this this kind of a big deal – these football players attempted to selfishly circumvented the election process – these guys attempted to defraud the state of North Dakota for personal gain. That is a serious deal – I don’t buy this crap about the players not really understanding what they did – that is absolute balderdash. These are adults and their actions have consequences and playing football for North Dakota State University is a privilege not a right – the Bison players in this case are also not the victims some have made them out to be.

If the NDSU coaching staff had just decided to suspend the players involved in this crime during the RMU game, this would have been over and it would have ended all of the speculation that has taken place since with each passing day.

NDSU Football again puts winning in front of doing the right thing

The NDSU Bison Football team proved once again that winning is more important than doing the right thing. Checking the newspapers today we find out that 10 Bison football players had their day in court today and once again the head football coach goes on record to say that none his players will miss any games. Marvelous!
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Ten North Dakota State University football players pleaded guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor election fraud and were sentenced to community service for faking signatures on proposed ballot measure petitions that they were hired to collect.

Among the players on the nation's top-ranked Football Championship Subdivision team who pleaded guilty Tuesday were starters Samuel Ojuri, Joshua Colville, Marcus Williams and Brendin Pierre. Players Lucas Albers, Aireal Boyd, Demitrius Gray Bryan Shepherd, Antonio Rogers, and Charles Smith III also pleaded guilty.

Each of the players was ordered to serve 360 days of unsupervised probation, complete 50 hours of community service and pay $325 in fees. All of the sentences were deferred, meaning the crime will be expunged from a player's record if he completes the conditions of his sentence.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed to the sentences for eight of the 10 players. The state had recommended 1-year suspended sentences for Ojuri and Williams because of prior misdemeanors.

The players declined to comment after the hearing. Quick deferred questions to NDSU.

Bison head coach Craig Bohl has said the team might discipline the players but won't suspend them. The school said he planned to issue a statement later Tuesday.
I have talked to quite a few UND fans that think the way that NDSU is handling this situation is a joke – we have players at UND getting suspended for Minor in Consumption which is a class B misdemeanor and then at NDSU we have football players pleading guilty to class A misdemeanors and they aren’t getting suspended. I think this send a poor message to the fans and especially to the young kids that look up to them. In fact, the NDSU Athletic Director Gene Taylor and the head football coach Craig Bohl are running deflections for their players.
