Hearld Letter to the Editor: Union, Yale share key trait: Coaches who deliver
If you haven't read the Grand Forks Herald, this letter to the editor is worth a look. So a Herald Reader wants us to take a look one row back.
If anything, this was probably Dave Hakstol's beat coaching job so far to date. Yeah, I would hate to disappoint this letter writer, but Don Lucia and Dave Hakstol aren't going anywhere. #firehakstol #firelucia

WARREN, Minn. — The past two NCAA hockey champions have been fun to watch. Both Union College, this year, and Yale University the previous year captured the essence of collegiate athletics, in that neither give out athletic scholarships but both still rose to the pinnacle of an NCAA sport.
UND and the University of Minnesota Gophers should also be commended for their fine efforts in reaching the Frozen Four. The expectations for those two schools should be high, in that they are among the elite in resources, both financial and facilities in the collegiate hockey world. Union plays in an arena that seats just over 2,000 fans.
Both Union and Yale had lesser talent, if the number of NHL draftees on their roster is considered. But as ESPN’s lead hockey analyst Barry Melrose pointed out — and I do respect his knowledge of hockey — you could see plays develop and players executing a plan.
The announcers talked in this tournament about the fine traditions of both UND and the Gophers, which is true with many titles in their past. But what brought both Union and Yale to the epitome of the college hockey world was behind the bench. Don Lucia, head coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, last won a title about 11 years ago; but from what I read, there is some pressure developing on him, as the expectations in Dinkytown are high — plus, he now has an athletic director who demands accountability. In Grand Forks, the current regime has yet to win a national championship.
You can only ride the tradition mantra so long. In my mind, part of tradition can be equated to longevity. In that regard, the Chicago Cubs have a fine and long baseball tradition; but not so in championships.
Given the “tradition” but more importantly the resources available, fans of the Gophers and UND should expect more than mere winning records. I commend the players of both teams; their effort cannot be questioned. I look one row back.

UND Hockey: SJHovey Nails it...
Like I have mentioned on Twitter, Last March, I started a tongue in cheek post on Sioux Sports. The title of the thread "Time to Fire Hakstol". The thread in question has kept growing, by the day. For those that don't red Sioux Sports, SJHovey is one of the more level headed posters from Sioux Sports and he absolutely nails it... Check it out. I feel the same way, I wouldn't trade out situation at UND either.
I ask this question, in all seriousness, to those who think that the program has fallen on hard times, below our standards, or that it's time to start thinking about coaching changes.
Look back over the past 9 seasons (I'm excluding the present season primarily because we don't know how it will turn out). If you could magically substitute the performance of another college hockey program for our own, would you? Whose?
UND is 235-119-37 over that span, with no losing seasons, 2 regular season crowns, 4 conference tourney titles, appearances in all 9 NCAA tournaments, but admittedly no national titles.
So who do you wish we were, over Hak's tenure, if not our own performance?
BC? Obviously. 3 national titles, 3 regular season titles, 6 conference tourney championships, appearances in 8 of 9 NCAA tournaments and a 238-97-33 record.
But now who?
Michigan? The supposed greatest college hockey program of all time? No national titles, 3 regular season titles, 3 conference tourney titles, 8 of 9 NCAA tourney appearances (and one losing season), with a win/loss record virtually identical to ours at 237-116-25. I'm not trading. That's the same car I'm driving without the 1 missed tourney.
How about Miami? 3 regular season titles, 1 conference tourney title, 8 of 9 NCAA appearances, but no national titles and a record no better than ours at 222-107-39. No thanks.
Minnesota? No national titles. 4 regular season titles but 1 conference tourney title. Only 6 of 9 in NCAA appearances with one losing season and a considerably worse record at 210-120-39. Plus, you're Minnesota. Forget it.
How about last year's champs, Yale. They have the almighty national title. But 2 regular season titles, 2 conference titles and only 4 NCAA appearances out of 9 seasons, to go along with 3 losing seasons and a pedestrian 153-129-24 record. I don't make that swap.
Duluth won a title, too. But not a single regular season title, one tournament title and made the NCAA's a paltry 3 of the 9 seasons, with 5 losing seasons and a barely .500 record of 161-149-47. Go ahead if you want to be a Bulldog.
How about Michigan St. and their national title? Zero regular season titles. 1 conference tourney title. 3 losing seasons. Only 4 NCAA appearances in the 9 years and a very average 173-150-42 record.
So far I'm not impressed.
So what about Wisconsin, BU or Denver?
Lot of baggage with Wisconsin. They have that title real early in the stretch of these 9 seasons, but no regular season titles, one very unexpected conference tourney title, 5 of 9 on NCAA appearances, a couple of sub-.500 seasons and a 196-133-39 record a long way behind UND. It might be for some of you, but not me.
BU? One great season with a national title. A couple of HE crowns to go with a couple of HE tourney titles. But they only made the tournament half the time and their overall record is still a long way behind UND, at 204-117-39.
Denver? For me this would be a maybe. 2 regular season crowns, 2 Broadmoors and appearances in 7 of the 9 NCAA tournaments. Pretty good record at 220-115-33. A bit of a toss up, but I might be persuaded to take that record for these past 9 seasons, understanding that the title did come at the very beginning of the run and there has been a generally downward progression.
Anybody that I missed?
So, of course I would love to have BC's record the past 9 years. Who wouldn't? Denver's? Maybe, although I don't like the direction they're going. Who else would you rather be?
Unless someone else has some good answers, I'm not sure I'd be jumping ship right about now.

Charles Orzetti makes it 2-0 for Yale against Quinnipiac
Yale Bulldog freshman forward Charles Orzetti makes it 2-0 for the Yale Bulldogs against the Quinnipiac Bobcats. Talk about going hard to the net and picking up the change. For the record, Orzetti is 6'4" 215.
This Yale team should also serve as a lesson to every hockey player/team in the world: go to the net and good things happen. Get dirty.

Clinton Bourbonais goal for Yale against Quinnipiac
Finally a goal, in the championship game of the 2013 Frozen Four as Yale's Clinton Bourbonais scores a goal for Yale against Quinnipiac. I am sure that Quinnipiac Bobcat goalie Eric Hartzell would like to have that one back.

(Video) UND's No goal against Yale
When I first saw this goal, I had a feeling that it wouldn't count. I am not sure why it took seven-plus minutes to review this play, it's either there or it's not there. If you're a UND fan, you kind of feel bad for Connor Gaarder, because he went 15 games without scoring a goal and had four goals all season long, three in one game against the Boston University Terriers.
I would contend that this long review was a momentum killer, because going into the review, UND had the momentum as well.
When the review took seven-plus minutes, I had a bad feeling and I kind of knew that UND was not going to get the goal. I don't know, from past experience. If UND get's to a 2-0 lead over Yale, it's a different game. It's a tough ending to a pretty decent season.

The Squirrel Told Me... (RW77)
NUTS!
Well, here's my OPINION:
The End of the Road
Well, our season is at an end. We did pretty well for 2/3rds of the game before it came crashing down. I wonder what was ailing Gothberg? Sadly, I was unable to watch the game so I wonder if it is the D that let us down or goaltending or what?
I know, I know. There is a silver lining to the loss: The Haters will have something to do this offseason while the fans that support UND truly lick their wounds and pine about things that could've been. So, I'll sum it all up.
We gave up a costly 3 on 1 goal. We didn't clear the front of our net. We broke down in areas. We didn't pot our chances or capitolize on Yale's mistakes. Sure, these infractions came down to simple factors but I'll sum it all up: FIRE HAKSTOL.
You know that 3 on 1? It wouldn't have happened if Blais was head coach. In fact, we'd be the first team with double digit National Championships. Hell... I don't know if we'd've spent a single season without the NC at the Ralph under Blais with the talent Hak has recruited.
You can't blame execution or bad play on the ice because they are just kids. Yale is from the ECACHL, dang it! Since when is it possible for ANY team out east to even be HALF decent? No, Yale wasn't better than us on this one day (silly facts), it was all Hakstol.
So, yeah. Fire him. It'll be gratifying to watch Hak flounder in unemployment for all of 72 hours max. But hey, at least we'll get Blais back....well, ok, at least that's what the UND fans in Colorado and Washington State are claiming in between bags of Doritos and through a fine blue smoky haze.
Reality Check
We lost. It SUCKS. The truth is, I thought last year's team or the year prior had the tools to go far. This year seemed more of a transitional year. We never had the consistency we've had in previous years. I guess that falls partly on Hakstol. I won't deny that Hak and Co. deserve some of the blame. But I won't join the haters doing what they love to do. I love my team and those who truly love their team don't ENDLESSLY bag on them and aren't stuck in the past.
We'll be back. Gothberg will mature and he'll firmly take over. Grimaldi will turn into a stud once he gains some consistency. We will miss Kristo and Knight. We'll miss the lockerroom presence of Tate. Andrew MacWilliam? Well... I love his style, but... the heavy hitters are being drummed out of hockey so in the coming years UND won't have to worry about the penalties he brings to the table. Joe? He's a fan favorite so I won't say anything but what a stud.
I will always trust in Hakstol and always have faith in the knowledge that some day we will make it all the way and win it all. And I will recognize that, until that happens, Hakstol will be hated upon unreasonably by all these "traditionalist" idiots who pervade fanbases nowadays. Yeah, flame away. I don't care.
I'm wrong. Big whoop. I'm an idiot. Doesn't bother me. I got you to read my opinion and some of you so revved up that you had to respond. I win.

(Video) UND 2 NU 1
I decided to put the game winning goal up from the Yale vs. Minnesota game as well. When I .fast forwarding to the UND goals I thought what the heck. I was in the car on my way to Hugo's, and I was listening to the game on 1500ESPN and Frank and Wally had barely got set when the overtime was already over. Not really a memorable call to the end of the Gophers season.
UND grinds out win against Niagara Purple Eagles
This was a typical hard fought regional semifinal playoff game, this is what I call a grind it out win. This wasn't a lot of fun to watch, but UND still moves on. Mac's goal to tie the game was your typical timely, big time goal.
Coming into this game, when you look at both team's schedules, you would think that game shouldn't even be close, but this is the NCAA playoffs. I thought we might see about a 6-1 game, but after the first period, I figured this was going to be a war. I also thought that this was a nasty game as well. In the end, UND was able to do what good teams do, they found a way to win.
