Malone vs. Malone

English: Ryan Malone of the Tampa Bay Lightnin...Image via WikipediaFormer Fighting Sioux forward Brad Malone who now plays for the Colorado Avalanche will be playing his cousin former SCSU Huskies Ryan Malone's team the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight.
Mike Chambers, Denver Post ---- [Brad]Malone is the cousin of Avalanche rookie forward Brad Malone.

“Pretty excited, obviously, because he’s one of those guys growing that up I looked up to,” Brad Malone said. “Any opportunity to skate with him in the summer is pretty exciting, so to now go up against him here is pretty special.”

Brad Malone, 22, began his pro career with the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League. He was called up Dec. 8 and made his NHL debut the following night at Edmonton. He has played left wing on the Avs’ third line in the past three games, and has an assist in each of the last two. His helper in Thursday’s 3-2 win over St. Louis was on Jay McClement’s game-winning goal. The kid remains in the lineup, even though Brandon Yip is back from a groin injury, and Malone will unquestionably stick around for a while — at least until Chuck Kobasew (head) and David Jones (groin) — and possibly Peter Mueller (head) — return from injuries.

Steve Downie fined 2,500 for leaving bench

I am not a Steve Downie fan by any stretch of the imagination but, I don't have a problem with him leaving the bench in this situation. We all know that the penalty could have been a 10 game suspension, but I am fine with the $2,500.00 fine. The simulation of shooting a gun after scoring a goal was totally classless act by the Rangers Artem Anisimov.

NEW YORK Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steve Downie has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for leaving the bench on a legal line change to become involved in an altercation in NHL Game No. 408 in New York on Thursday, Dec. 8, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 13:23 of the second period. Downie was assessed a minor penalty for roughing and a misconduct penalty.

The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Boston Bruins set up to repeat?

Milan LucicImage by slidingsideways via FlickrI would say that the Boston Bruins based on who they lost and who they retained during the offseason; would have to be “one” of the favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference and repeat as Stanley Cup champions. That’s not to say that the Bruins won’t be challenged by the other teams in the Eastern conference because they will, I would also put the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Pittsburg Penguins if Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are healthy as teams that will also compete for the Eastern Conference crown as well.
NHL.COM --- Unlike the mass exodus from Chicago last season, and even the losses Pittsburgh incurred two years ago, the Bruins will return much of their Cup-winning club intact. They have three key players to replace: Mark Recchi, Michael Ryder and Tomas Kaberle.

Recchi defied time in the Cup Final, authoring a vintage performance and finishing the 2011 postseason with 5 goals and 14 points. He embraced the role of steady, veteran leader and spent much of the season on the second line. He slumped early in the postseason, but came on strong to help win the Cup for the third time in his career before announcing his retirement on the ice after Game 7.

Ryder was one of several Bruins who elevated his play during the Cup run. He had only 18 goals in each of the past two regular seasons, but racked up 8 goals and 17 points in the playoffs and earned a hefty contract from the Dallas Stars.

Kaberle struggled for much of his time with the Bruins after arriving in one of the marquee deals of the 2011 trade deadline. The power play was awful during the postseason, and that was expected to be the one area where he helped. He did finish the postseason with 11 assists, but was mostly a third-pairing defenseman in tight games. Had Boston not won the Cup, the trade would be considered a huge disappointment. Kaberle signed with Carolina as a free agent.

Boston also lost depth defenseman Shane Hnidy, and the future of center Marc Savard remains uncertain -- he only played 25 games for the Bruins last season while recovering from a concussion.

Rocco Grimaldi: A 'huge' threat for Team USA

Here is a great article about future Fighting Sioux forward Rocco Grimaldi; seems that while small in stature Rocco is making a big impact at the combines this spring.
Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com Staff Writer --- After having just completed his fourth of 12 team interviews in his initial day at the NHL Scouting Combine, had a satisfied look on his face.

Despite being listed as the smallest player invited to the Combine at 5-foot-6, 163 pounds, Grimaldi has certainly earned the reputation as a big-game performer. Why else would all 30 NHL teams request an interview with the leading scorer for the U.S. National Team Development Program in 2010-11.

"It's great to always be the underdog and have people doubt you," Grimaldi told NHL.com. "But I think I could also be a role model for kids my size, not even in hockey, but in general. I could be a really good example for them on how I go about my business, not caring about what people say, and how I live my life. I'm always thinking about the next generation under me and trying to help them out as well."

Grimaldi was asked if those scouts from the Tampa Bay Lightning referred to Martin St. Louis at some point during their discussion.

"They said one of their best players is St. Louis, he's the leader of that group and we don't care about size," Grimaldi said. "Our best player is the smallest guy on the ice and we love small guys and that was a cool thing to hear. That motivates me because playing in the NHL has always been my dream. So whatever it takes to achieve it ..."

Grimaldi is certainly on that path after striking for a team-leading 34 goals, 62 points, 13 power-play goals, and five game-winners in 50 games for the USNTDP this season.

"He's definitely a character kid and great guy," USNTDP goalie John Gibson said. "He's small, but probably has the biggest heart on the team."

"He was a dynamic guy, an outstanding skater, quick and around the puck all the time," Central Scouting's Chris Edwards told NHL.com. "He wasn't scared to get involved in battles and go to the net."

Grimaldi played a big part of the gold medal-winning Team USA in the 2010 Under-18 World Championship in Belarus, tying for the team lead with 10 points in seven games. He'd connect for 2 goals, 8 points and a plus-5 rating in another gold-medal winning effort at the 2011 U-18 World Championship in Germany.

Claude Julien vindicated...

BOSTON - MAY 01: Head coach Claude Julien of ...Image by Getty Images via @daylifeAs a Boston Bruins fans I must admit that I have been critical of Claude Julien in the past... I think with his teams efforts on the ice this spring I believe he has vindicated himself with advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals  against the Vancouver Canucks, there were rumblings that if Claude Julien's team didn't get out of the second round Claude might get relieved of his coaching duties.

So if you look at it from another unexamined angle; while Claude Julien's Bruins teams have beaten the Montreal Canadians two out of the three times his Bruins have played them in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Bruins also have faced some adversity... Last season after having a three games to none lead and a three goal lead in game seven the Bruins ended up chocking and losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in game seven. This season his team rebounded to beat the Flyers in four games to  exercise the demons from last season. Finally tonight; Julien's team advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs by beating a very good Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team... How do I like him now?
Chad Finn --- Boston Globe ---- If there was a concern among fans that that Roloson's ability to keep the Bruins off the board would lead to Tampa Bay stealing it on a fluky goal, it might have been justified. But the Bruins themselves never thought that way, maintaining their resolve even when frustration could have seeped in.

The evidence that the Bruins always kept their faith even as Roloson stymied them time and again became clear to Julien in the second intermission.

"When I walked into the locker room before the third period, I didn't have much to say," said Julien. "When I was outside, I could hear the points they were making, and they were bang-on. The attitude was that eventually we will get rewarded. And that's exactly what happened. I couldn't be prouder of the approach we took all throughout this game. We never let up once."

The victory also was a vindication of sorts for the coach, who as recently as the first-round series with Montreal -- in which the Bruins lost the first two games before winning in seven -- was perceived to be coaching for his job in some corners. Julien said that talk never gets to him.

"I say this all the time, but I don't care what anyone says. It doesn't bother me, and I don't really hear it," he said. "What matters to me is what happens in that dressing room. And as much as I'm getting criticism from some people, I'm getting pats on the back from others."

After the Bruins victory tonight, Julien can expect many more of the latter.

Horton and Thomas lead the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Finals...

The Boston Bruins are off to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1990. I think one could say that game seven between the Boston Bruins and the Tampa Bay Lightning will go down as an instant classic, tonight's game was also not for the faint of heart as both teams skated up and down the ice exchanging chances on the opposition's net.

Both goalies Dwayne Roloson and Tim Thomas were stellar and Nathan Horton scored the only goal (8th of the Stanley Cup Playoffs) at the 12:27 mark of the third period and then Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins defense held on for the win as Tampa Bay had a few good chances to even the score.

* The Bruins outshot the Lightning 38-24...
The Boston Bruins are 11-10 all-times in Game 7s
*  Tim Thomas had two shutouts during the ECF Finals.
*  There were two players in their 40's playing in this series Recchi 43 Roloson 41.
* Two of the three Vezina finalist are in the Stanley Cup Finals.

This is what Tim Thomas had to say after the game...
"I think a lot of people thought I was over the hill,"' said the 37-year-old Thomas, a Vezina Trophy finalist who was sidelined throughout last year's playoffs. "I knew it wasn't true. I put in a lot of work over the summer and I've had an unbelievable year. I've been blessed."

Steven Stamkos takes a slap shot in the face.

This is what happened when Steven Stamkos got in the way of a slap shot off of the stick Boston Bruins Defenseman Johnny Boychuk... All I can say is ouch!!! I think Stamkos is probably very lucky that he was wearing a half shield. Some might say that this is enough reason to make the half shield mandatory.  Oh yeah and Stamkos put on a full bird cage and returned to the game.

Update --- No punishment for Bruins' Horton

Steve Downie checks Nathan HortonImage by slidingsideways via FlickrNathan Horton will not be suspended or disciplined by the NHL, nor in my opinion should he be. According to James Murphy of ESPN Boston, there will be no punishment for Boston Bruins forward Nathan Horton who squirted water and then threw the water bottle at a Tampa Bay fan at that was sitting behind the Boston Bruins players bench at the end of game six.
James Murphy; ESPN Boston ---- As the Boston Bruins skated off the ice following their 5-4 loss in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Tampa Bay Lightning fans at St. Pete's Forum peppered the ice and some Bruins with the hand-clapper instruments they were given by the Lightning for the game. Apparently the frustration over the loss and the fans' actions got to Bruins winger Nathan Horton, who sprayed a heckling fan and then threw his water bottle at the fan as he walked down the runway to the dressing room.

While the NHL doesn't like to see such actions by players, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told ESPNBoston.com late Thursday afternoon that "no action is being contemplated" by the league.

"There is no way to substantiate what may or may not have happened," Daly said.

Horton's agent also confirmed that no actions would be taken by the league in response to Horton's actions, which videos posted on YouTube appear to confirm.
I actually find it funny that some of the big time sports pundits had feigned so much anger over this minor situation; did they really expect the NHL to suspend a player based on some home movie that was on YouTube? I am sure we will see the conspiracy theorist come out and tell us that since Collin Campbell’s son plays for the Bruins that is the reason the NHL didn’t suspend Nathan Horton.

Will the Bruins Horton be suspended for squirting a fan?

This is the main reason you don't give away things to fans is because they can end up back on the ice at the end of the game, this was a horrible move by the Tampa Bay Lightning. If you didn't see the end of the game last night this was an ugly scene. At the end of the game between the Boston Bruins and the Tampa Bay Lightning, thousands of noise makers were being tossed on the ice by the jubilant Lightning fans, by the video you can see that Bruins forward David Krejci was pelted numerous times with the noise makers while leaving the ice, you can also see from the video that Krejci was obviously agitated by being struck by the noise makers. This is unacceptable in my opinion.

Apparently there was some other bad behavior and the buzz around the internet today (every major blog is talking about it) is that Boston Bruins forward Nathan Horton sprayed a Tampa Bay fan and then threw a water bottle at him while leaving the bench on his way to the Bruins locker room after the game. Some think this is ill advised and unacceptable act by Horton is worthy of a one game suspension, it might be,  because the coach of the New York Rangers John Tortorella was suspended for spraying a fan. We'll see how the NHL reacts in this situation.

Bolts uber hack Steve Downie tries to kiss Andrew Ference.

First off, most of you know that I don't like Tampa Bay's uber hack Steve Downie, I just think he is a dirty hockey players that is one stupid move away from another lengthy suspension from the NHL. Steve Downie is also a bit of a punk that has never seemed to grown up,  I would almost put him in the same category as Matt Cooke.

I think eventually these types of players, I call them uber hacks, will get whats coming to him, someone is going to catch him with his head down or finally decide they have seen enough and punch his lights out. Personally, I thought Jack Johnson's  elbow on this P.O.S. during the World Juniors was over blown and warranted. Tonight this lovely piece of dog excrement looks like he tried to kiss or blow Boston Bruins' defenseman Andrew Ference a kiss, here is a a more funny version of the kiss in question.

Bruins defense coughs up a fur ball…

Well that was nice! The Boston Bruins blew an opportunity to send the Tampa Bay Lightning to the golf course for the summer and advance to the Stanley Cup Finals to take on the unlikeable Vancouver Canucks. I have have two word for the Bruins defense tonight "absolutely atrocious" add to that,  their penalty killers were equally "absolutely atrocious," these were the same penalty killers who had killed 16/18 Tampa Bay Lightning power plays in the first five games of the series. Tonight the penalty killers was way more generous giving up three power play goals on four power play opportunities.

Bruins second year defenseman Johnny Boychuk was also brutal tonight and worthy of sitting in the press box for game seven as he was on the ice for all five of Tampa Bay’s goals. I am not sure why Claude Julie kept coming back with the young defenseman, an example of his work can be seen in the video above.

The usually  steady Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas was horrible tonight barely stopping 80 percent of the shots he faced. Thomas finished the night giving up 5 goals on 26 shots (21/26), no very Vezina Trophy like tonight. Not to be out down the aging Dwayne Roloson was equally unimpressive giving up 4 goals on 20 shots (16/20).

Dwayne Roloson to start for the Lightning.

IMG_6577.jpgImage by bridgetds via FlickrIt looks like the Tampa Bay Lightning are going to start goalie Dwayne Roloson in net tonight for game 6 against the Boston Bruins in Tampa Bay. If I was a player on the Boston Bruins I would be licking my lips because the Bruins have had good success against Dwayne Roloson.
AMPA - Dwayne Roloson will be back in the net for the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight as the Bolts face elimination in the Eastern Conference final.

The 41-year-old goaltender was sat out by Tampa coach Guy Boucher for the Lightning’s 3-1 loss in Boston in Game 5, leaving the Bolts down 3-2 in the best-of-seven series and facing elimination for the fourth time this post-season.

They were down 3-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the opening round and came back to win the series.

“(Roloson)’s going to be ready, willing and able to prove why he’s one of the big reasons we got here as a team,” said Tampa forward Steven Stamkos.

Boucher said he told Roloson, who is 6-0 in his career in elimination games, he would be playing in Game 6 Monday, the day of Game 5, same time as he told him he wouldn’t be playing that night.

Steve Downie nails Johnny Boychuk into the end boards.

This was the hit that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steve Downie put on Boston Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk; if you're expecting supplemental discipline from the NHL, don't. According to TSN hockey analyst Bob McKenzie Steve Downie's hit on Johnny Boychuk is NOT being pursued for supplementary discipline by the NHL. Personally, while I am not a fan of Downie or of the style of hockey he plays, I don't think that check warranted anymore than a two minute penalty.

Tim Thomas robs Steve Downie

Check out this unbelievable save by Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas as he robs Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steve Downie to keep the Boston Bruins lead at 2-1 midway through the 2nd period. The Bruins scored a an empty net goal to win the game 3-1. If it wasn't for Tim Thomas coming up big it could have been an ugly game for the Boston Bruins who were out shot 34-20 by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Many of the Lightnings shots on goal were of the grade "A" variety. Also, in the second period, Bruins all world goalie, Tim Thomas had another amazing save on  a Tampa Bay 3-on-2.

I think one could make the argument that this was the save by Tim Thomas was a game changer and probably the save of the year for the Boston Bruins. Saves like this, is the reason why Tim Thomas is a finalist for the Vezina Trophy.

Something for Mike Smith fans to ponder...

Maybe just maybe this is the reason that Tampa Bay Lightning goalie Mike Smith hasn't got the start against the Boston Bruins just yet? Like I said before there is probably a valid reason why Dwayne Roloson is playing instead of back up goalie Mike Smith Smith.

I have also mentioned in the past, that the Boston Bruins have not challenged Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith when he has played against the Bruins in two relief appearances, the Bruins need to get bodies in front of the Tampa Bay goal and challenge him, to date they have not, the Bruins also need to get Smith's  feet moving. Let it be known that Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith is not a world beater or a goalie of Carey Prices stature, Mike Smith is a mediocre goalie with an .899 save percentage that the Dallas Stars traded away.

Nathan Horton's Hit On Steve Downie

I honestly can’t fault the referee from his perspective, the ref in his opinion believed Steve Downie embellished his fall after being hit into the boards by Bruins forward Nathan Horton late in the second period of last night’s game, calling the Tampa Bay Lightning wing Hack Steve Downie for diving. Apparently, after further review Uber Hack Downie wasn’t faking, in fact Downie never returned to the game and is listed as day-to-day.

To be honest with you, I feel no empathy what-so-ever for Steve Downie because in my opinion he is one of the dirtiest players in the NHL. Seriously! I honestly can’t imagine anyone even caring. How many games has this clown/buffoon been suspended by the NHL/AHL in his short career? Reviewing the Steve Downie hit parade he stared out his NHL career by receiving a 20 game suspension for a dirty hit on Dean McAmmond in an exhibition game… Steve Downie followed up that smooth move with a 20- game suspension for slashing an AHL official.

Hey I admit that while the call was probably a reputation call and the wrong call, I believe that Downie has earned his reputation based on his actions on the ice, maybe if he just clean up his act, he might get the benefit of the doubt once in a while. I say whatever, you earned it Steve, you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

Bruins choke away three goal lead…

The Boston Bruins were 23-0-0 when leading by three goals. Make that 23-1-0 after today’s unhinging debacle. The Bruins came out flying in the first period and raced to an impressive 3-0 lead in the game, the Bruins even chased the Tampa Bay Lightning’s starting goalie Dwayne Roloson who appeared to be very shaky from the game. Roloson was then replaced by Lightning backup goalie Mike Smith…I think it’s safe to say that everything was going the Bruins’ way until the 6:55 mark of the second period when the roof fell in on the Boston Bruins. Lightning forward Teddy Purcill got the Tampa Bay Lightning on the score board by scoring two quick unanswered goals. It would have been a great opportunity for the Bruins to call a time out but they did not, another #epicfail for the Bruins head coach Claude Julien.

Can’t score if don’t shoot

In my opinion I think it’s fair to say that Mike Smith was hardly challenged the by the Boston Bruins after replacing Dwayne Roloson. If you go back and watch the game you will see that Smith didn’t have to make a lot of difficult saves and most of his shots were logo killers from the Boston Bruins. The Bruins also failed to get traffic in front of the Tampa Bay Lightning net. You can’t win many games with that kind of a game plan you have to generate opportunities down low and get bodies in front of the opposition net.

Sit on the lead = #epicfail...

If this years Boston Bruins’ team has one glaring fault, it’s when they get a lead and then they try to sit on the lead and they fail to compete anymore, they go into a defensive shell which doesn’t always seem to work for them, especially against the talented offensive minded teams. The Boston Bruins can not give a talented team like the Tampa Bay Lightning grade “A” scoring opportunities in front of their net and expect the goalie to make every save, last time I check Tim Thomas was a human being and he isn't going to stop every shot that somes his way. Good teams bury grade “A” scoring chances in close off of turnovers, the defense and the forwards have to be better, they have to be smarter with the puck and get the pucks deep and get offensive opportunites between the dots. The Bruins should have kept the pressure on and continued to attack… Instead the Boston Bruins sat back and watched the Tampa Bay Lightning race by them like they were big orange road cones.

Power outage

The Boston Bruins registered an unimpressive shot total of eight shots during the third period of today’s game and it was many minutes into the third before the Bruins even registered a shot on goal. I would classify that as being unacceptable and that can’t happen if the Bruins want to win this series and advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.

While the Bruins were caught flat footed numerous times the Lightning continued to race through the neutral zone with speed attacking the Bruins net and capitalizing off the Bruins turnovers. For whatever reason the Bruins abandoned their successful game plan from game three after they got the three goal lead going into the second period… That three goal lead promptly disappeared in four short minutes with two goals from former Maine Black Bear Teddy Purcill and Sean Bergenheim. From the 6:55 minute of the second period on the Bruins also looked uninterested in playing strong defensively as well and became a turnover factory and failed to get pucks deep. There were numerous times the Bruins failed to get puck deeps and turned the puck over to the speedy offensive minded Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bergeron hit on Krejci

This was the hit that everyone was talking about tonight, Lightning defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron puts the woods to Bruins forward David Krejci. The check by Bergeron was ruled to be a 2 minute minor penalty for elbowing and the head coach for the Lightning Guy Boucher went nuts on the players bench.

My question is; do you think the ref made the right call on this hit? I believe it's a grey area and I didn't have a problem with the call because it looks like Krejci was hit in the face... That being said, Krejci should also be more aware coming through the neutral zone, David had his head down yet again, you'd think Krejci would have learned after being taken out by Mike Richards the year before. Was it a penalty, the Tampa Bay head coach didn't think so?

Again; why was Bruin's rookie Tyler Seguin not playing in the first two rounds?

Boston Bruins rookie Tyler Seguin missed the first 11 games of the Stanley Cup Playoffs because he was said to be a defensive liability, but made up for the absence tonight with two goals and two assists during the second period of Tuesday's 6-5 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins. The four points in the second period by Tyler Seguin tied a Boston Bruin’s/NHL playoff record for points in a period.
USA Today --- Seguin's four points in a period tied the NHL playoff record held by many players, including three other Bruins. Barry Pederson did it in 1982 against the Buffalo Sabres, followed by Peter McNab in 1982 against Buffalo and by Ken Linseman against the Montreal Canadiens in 1985.

In two games that Tyler Seguin has played in, Seguin has amassed (3g-3a-6pts) that's one more point than first line winger and the Boston Bruins regular season leading goal scorer Bruins tough guy Milan Lucic (2g-3a-5pts) again, why wasn't this kid playing in the first two rounds. The $64,000.00 question is who are the Bruins going to sit when Patrice Bergeron returns from his mild concussion? I would say that Daniel Paille, Shawn Thornton or Greg Campbell will be sitting for the Bruins all have basically been useless during the playoffs so far for the Boston Bruins.

Ending of game one between Boston and Tampa Bay.

Check out this exchange between the Bruins and Tampa Bay at the end of game one, Lucic and Horton were given a 2 and a 10 for their lack of composure. These two are lucky that the Colin Campbell Wheel of Justice didn't spin in their disfavor, because it's an ill advised and classless move to punch an unexpecting opponent in the face at the end of a game that has already been decided, this is coming from a Boston Bruins fan..
