Boston Bruins game winning goal by Brad Marchand

You read that right, the Boston Bruins scored on the power play... Yeah, who would believe it? So far this season, the Boston Bruins are 6/46 (.13) on the power play and actually scored the go ahead goal at the .36 mark of the third period on the power play  with a goal from forward Brad Marchand.

That would be Marchand's eight goal of the season. The Little Ball of Hate also drew the penalty that lead to the play in question as well. The Boston Bruins have now scored two power play goals in two consecutive games in a row.

There is some question, on whether the Bruins forward Marchand dove on this play, looking at the video, I don't see any sign of embellishment.

Jack Edwards with the call of the Bruins comeback

Wow! What a game. I think this is one of the better games that I have watched this season to date. Jack Edwards is right, "get over it, we go to hockey games to get excited." Right? The Boston Bruins scored two goals in a minute and 17 seconds to tie the game. Before losing in a shootout.

What can I say about Brad "The Little Ball of Hate" Marchand, he just keeps scoring goals for the Boston Bruins. That was the seventh goal of the year for Marchand.

(Video) Patrice Bergeron and Jeff Skinner dust-up

This is why Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron was tied up with Carolina forward Jeff Skinner at the end of last night's game. You can see by the video that Bergeron was slew footed by Skinner behind the Bruins net. This was what Brad Marchand was suspended for last season.

Rangers Stu Bickel vs. Flyers Tom Sestito

As a Boston Bruins hockey fan, this is one fight that I was very happy to see. In my opinion, Tom Sestito is waste of skin and if the Flyers want waste roster spot on this guy more power to him. Making a case for Stu Bickel, at least he can be used in the third defensive paring if need be.

Lastly, in this case, I am glad that the fourth line forward Sestito was able to pull off the legal check this time. The guy is an absolute mountain of a man, and you have to keep your head on a swivel when he is on the ice.

Subban to the Flyers?

If Boston Bruins fans didn’t have enough reason to hate the Philadelphia Flyers already – I am sure that if the Flyers signed P.K. Subban to an offer sheet and they were able to land the Hab’s mouthy defenseman – this would give ample reasons to Bruins fans to hate them even more.

It seems that this story is taking on a life of its own – Hab’s defenseman P.K. Subban, was offered a contract by the Montreal Canadians last week for two years’ worth 5.5 million or 2.75 million a year, however, Subban has not yet agreed to the terms and or signed a new contract. Could the Flyers next offer sheet be going to P.K. Subban?
Chris Nichols, Sports Net --- According to French sports network RDS, Subban reportedly turned down a two-year $5.5 million offer last week.

Enter the Philadelphia Flyers who appear in need of a top defenseman and who have not shied away from extending offer sheets in the past.

Just last month Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren signed Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber to a 14-year $110 million offer sheet, only to have the Predators match less than a week later.

In 1997 the Flyers landed Chris Gratton with an offer sheet, while in 2006 the Flyers agreed on an offer sheet with Ryan Kesler which the Vancouver Canucks eventually matched.

So could the Flyers extend another offer sheet this summer, this time to either Carlson or Subban?
It will be interesting to see what the Flyers do – this week they lost another defenseman Andrej Meszaros for an unknown time after he had surgery to repair his torn Achilles tendon. The Flyers also don’t know if Chris Pronger will ever play hockey again – to top it all off the Flyers lost former Denver Pioneer Matt Carle to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Let's not trade Milan Lucic...

Checking my usual reading for the day when I came across this question in the daily mail bag to the Boston version of the ESPN Blog – it was a question that a fan posed to James Murphy.
Q. Murph, could you please explain to me why David Krejci and Milan Lucic are considered "untouchable" by the Bruins' front office? There's no doubt both show flashes of brilliance, and Lucic especially provides a rare skill set. But both are historically prone to long droughts, followed by a two-week explosion, followed by another drought -- hardly the kind of consistency Claude Julien preaches. I'm very fond of both, but explain to me why a Krejci for Bobby Ryan deal is a non-starter for GM Peter Chiarelli? People point to the fact that Tyler Seguin might not be ready to be a full-time center, and while I agree, that doesn't mean that we don't have tremendous depth down the middle. Krejci is a terrific playmaker, but somebody has to put the puck in the net. Bobby Ryan has four consecutive 30-goal seasons. Can we really expect Nathan Horton (a guy who's had his past two seasons end prematurely) to be that top-flight goal scorer? With the Rangers getting better and the Penguins getting Sidney Crosby back for 82 games, can we agree that we're going to need to score some goals this year? -- Joe O. (Los Angeles)

A.
Joe, I agree with you that David Krejci and Milan Lucic shouldn't be considered "untouchable," and I'm not sure they have been put in that category by Peter Chiarelli and the Bruins' brass. What I do know is that both players were brought up in trade discussions with Columbus for Rick Nash and with Anaheim for Bobby Ryan, and that Chiarelli decided for whatever reason the package he was getting versus what he was receiving wasn't worth it. I think that with the exception of Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton, Zdeno Chara, Patrice Bergeron and Tuukka Rask, any Bruins player is fair game for the right price.
First off, I don’t know why anyone that covers the Boston Bruins or is a fan of the Boston Bruins would want the Bruins to trade Milan Lucic. The rest of the Eastern Division has played into the Boston Bruins hands and have added toughness/fighters in the off season. There is no reason to trade a player that is not only a feared fighter but also a legit top six forward can score 25-30 goals a year. Trading him away would be downright silly but also incoherent.

The other aforementioned player David Krecji – while probably not untouchable – players of his skill set do not come around every day. That being said, you just don’t trade him away like him without getting a player of his skill set back. I would also be very surprised if the Ducks offered a team like the Boston Bruins a Bobby Ryan type players without demanding draft picks, prospects and a player that is “at least” David Krecji’s skil set.

Lastly, I erg the Boston media and fans to have patience with the current roster of the Boston Bruins, I think there is a good core of players that could go very deep into the NHL playoffs. Also, players like Brad Marchand and Tyler Seguin are still very early in their careers and could have break out season this year.

Bruins went after Parise as well

Perusing the internet today it appears that the Boston Bruins also offered Zach Parise a significant contract offer.
Fluto Shinzawa, Boston Globe --- Before Sunday’s market opening, GM Peter Chiarelli said he expected to be quiet. The Bruins have less than $3 million in available cap space.

Had the Bruins signed Parise, they would have exceeded the $70.2 million cap by the allowable 10 percent offseason margin. They could have placed Marc Savard on long-term injured reserve if necessary.

Parise said his final decision came between Minnesota and New Jersey. Parise is a Minnesota native. The left wing had previously played for the Devils his entire career.

Parise, the ex-captain of the Devils, was one of the two high-end free agents available on the market. Ryan Suter was the other. Both signed identical deals with the Wild.
Obviously, the Boston Bruins didn’t have a lot of space to work with and they would have had to makes some moves to get under the cap. Could Bruins fans imagine how he would have looked in the B’s line up skating alongside a couple of the Bruins faster forwards like Patrice Bergeron and say the “Little Ball of Hate” Brad Marchand.

Chimera says that Marchand a diver.

The Washington Capitals forward Jason Chimera and others from the Capitals and their media has called Boston Bruins forward Brad "the Little Ball of Hate" Marchand a diver.
“No matter how much Marchand’s diving and stuff like that, is embellishing a bit, but you can’t do stuff like that because it’s going to be called.” [Capitals Insider]
The Little ball of hate, Marchand has been less than thrilled with being called a diver. Here is what he has to say. Just for the record Marchand was cut on the play in question.
“For them to judge what knocks you down, they don’t know your balance or what not on the play,” Marchand told reporters. “They’re sitting at home watching on TV. I don’t really care what they say. They have no impact on my game, my life. They mean nothing.” [Capital's Insider]

Tyler Seguin extends the series

The Boston Bruins are going to another game seven as Tyler Seguin scored the game winning goal at the 3:17 of overtime to send the series back to Boston. This will be the Bruins fourth game seven in the last fourteen months. Game seven is on Wednesday night (TDB) at TD North Garden. This was the first goal of the playoffs for Seguin (1g-1a-2pts).

The Bruins have stuggled to get scoring from their top two lines, David Krejci (1g-2a-3pts), Milan Lucic (0g-3a-3pts), Patrice Bergeron (0g-2a-2pts), Brad Marchand (1g-1a-2pts). Krecji also scored his first goal of the playoffs today. Brad Marchand got his first goal of the playoffs yesterday.

Richard Peverley (3g-2a-5pts), Milan Lucic, Tyler Seguin, Andrew Ference and David Krejci all had 2 points in today's win against the Washington Capitals.

The best line for the Bruins through the first five games of the Stanley Cup playoffs has been the line of Benoit Pouliot (1g-1a-2pts), Brian Rolston (1g-2a-3pts), Chris Kelly (1g-2a-3pts).

Chimera hit on Marchand

I apologize for the quality of the video, I do not have a steady hand, nor do I have a video recorder to tape the plays that I would like. This was the hit in question by Washington Capitals forward Jason Chimera on Boston Bruins forward Bard Marchand as you can seen by the video that the Little Ball of Hate was not hit in the head. What caused the cut to Marchand's face is unknown.

Alzner tells Lucic to stop crying

The Washington Capitals might want to have Karl Alzner review a few of Lucic's fight video's because the last thing that Lucic is; is a whiner. I got a chuckle out of this as well. Alzner is probably lucky that he was rescued by the ref before Lucic got a hold of him. If Alzner is confused he can confer with Paul Gaustad of Buffalo.
"Well, there's a lot of [proof] on my side to show that I'm not a crybaby," Lucic said after the game. "That's a lot coming from a guy I think who's got two roughing penalties in three years, so there you go.

Asked whether he felt Alzner was the third man in, an offense that is punishable by a game misconduct, Lucic grinned and chose his words carefully before answering, "Yup." [WEEI.COM]

Marchand a diver?

Here is an entertaining and humorous video about Brad Marchand and his apparent diving that he did during game three against the Washington Capitals. The one play where Nikolas Backstrom hit him from behind, Marchand was off balance and basically already falling down, I will excuse that flop. That being said Marchand's diving is nothing compared to Ryan Kesler.

Chimera spears the Little Ball of Hate in the groin

Ouch! This is the reason that Brad Marchand was laying on the ice last night. Looks like the refs missed one here, that one couldn’t have felt very good. As you can see by the photo, Washinton Capitals forward Jason Chimera speared Brad Marchand in the groin/cup region with his stick during last night's game between the Boston Bruins and the Washington Capitals. That should have been a major penalty.

Of course no one is going to feel bad for the Little Ball of Hate Brad Marchand. I noticed that when the  Captials started to play physical  and rough against the Bruins, the Bruins kind of took the game over. Here is the link to the video in question [Click to view]
Joe McDonald, ESPN Boston --- One would have assumed the player waiting for Marchand was forward Jason Chimera. (In fact, we did in an earlier post.)

During a scrum in front of the Bruins’ net early in the third period, Chimera clearly struck Marchand in the groin area with his stick, sending Marchand to the ice in pain. He was attended to by team trainer Don DelNegro. Chimera was given a two-minute penalty for slashing.

But Marchand was approached by defenseman Karl Alzner, who caught Marchand with an elbow to the head during the game.

Zdeno Chara vs. Chris Neil

This fight was a direct result of Chris Neils hit on the Boston Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk earlier in the game. From reviewing the video, I think the play was a "borderline" charging call. [click to view video of hit].

It was not a good day for Boston Bruins defensemen as Johnny Boychuk and Joe Corvo were both left the game and didn't return.
Both Boychuk and Corvo made the bus and were on the flight’s manifest. Julien figures both will be OK. Boychuck, he said, got caught with his head down, and was held out for the rest of the game per standard protocol. [Boston Globe]

Marchand’s hit on Emelin

It looks like the “little ball of hate” Brad Marchand’s has escaped supplementary discipline this time around but checkout his hit on Alexei Emelin of the Montreal Canadians. For his efforts Marchand received 2 minute penatly for clipping Emelin. It would appear that Marchand has not learned from his five game suspension.
John Shannon tweet,

NHL has looked at BMarchand clipping penalty on Emelin last night. Don’t expect anymore discipline from the play. He might get a phone call.

Seidenberg's crazy goal.

Check out this crazy goal by Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg as he takes a slap shot on net from center ice and beats Ottawa Senators' goalie Craig Anderson. If you're the goaltending coach from the Senators you can't be happy with this effort by Anderson. That was the game winning goal as well.

Video of Tom Sestito hits on Steven Kampfer and on Nathan Horton

Tom Sestito is a known for his ability to rack up penalty minutes, today Sestito put two questionable hits on two Boston Bruin's players, both Bruins players were hit a long time after they had gotten rid of the puck.

Tom Sestito's questionable, late hit on Nathan Horton was the reason Horton had to miss the rest of the hockey game. Here is what Boston Bruins head coach Claude Julian had to say on the hit.
"He was kept out for the obvious [reasons]," Bruins coach Claude Julien said after the game. "It was kind of a head injury. He's just being reevaluated right now. That's basically all we know and that's as far as we've gone with the evaluation." [NESN.COM]
It would not be an understatement to say that this was a nasty game and there were three fights and a six fighting majors handed out during today's game. Milan Lucic worked over Tom Sestito at the 01:24 mark of the first period.

P.K. Subban slewfoots Chris Kunitz

Hum! Another game, another P.K. Subban atrocity by the Habs defenseman, well maybe not, but I think this is the same thing that Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand got fined for when he slew footed Matt Niskanen. Last week the Habs punk Subban hit Boston Bruins forward David Krecji in the head with a questionable high hit . I am starting to see a pattern here, Subban is starting to turn into quite the goon.

Shawn Thornton penalty shot goal

The days of the one dimensional tough guys that play five minutes a game and get into to a fight or two are becoming extinct and soon could be no longer needed, the tough guys of the future are going to need to fight as well as score goals and contribute in the score sheet. Check out this move, that's the second goal in the last four games for the Boston Bruins tough guy. Thornton was an assist away from having the Gordy Howe hat trick.
