After years of playing, watching and studying hockey, player evaluation is still a mystery to me. In no other sport with which I'm familiar is the selection of players more difficult than hockey. Picking the best players out of a group of baseball prospects is easy, football and basketball, too. And superstar hockey players are easy to spot. But determining if a player can help make your team a winner on the ice can't be easy. Speed, skating ability, physical play, they're important, but there are more intangibles in hockey performance than any other sport. I'd love to discuss this with an NHL scout.
