What the hell is this?

For those of you that haven't seen it yet. Check out this litte gem from the Denver Post Hockey blogger. This is ridiculous. WTF? OK, I am willing to bet your coach is a great guy but he looked like an absolute buffoon with his antics on Saturday night. Now we are also to believe that it is some how UND's fault? That is really funny.
My thoughts: Gwozdecky is the most mild-mannered coach I know, and in 14 years I’ve only seen his blood boil twice — both times against North Dakota and with referee Todd Anderson blowing the whistle.

See a pattern there? The “Sioux Fighters” and their fans want minor-league entertainment, Anderson is an emotional official who sometimes jaws at players, and Gwozdecky is a class act. At some point those styles clash, big-time, and the mild-mannered coach can’t stomach it. It becomes disgusting, and the coach erupts into what he doesn’t like.

  1. I guess this clown didn't watch the series.

Denver was the by far the team that was commmiting dumb penalties.

When they got way behind Friday they were trying to start fights all over the place. In fact they committed an unwarrented spear followed by two cross checks on one player.

  2. I really love watching the Sioux and Denver it is a great match up but this guys is always trying to incite the masses. Well he did it again.

  3. Ok Goonster, let's remove your green glasses for a moment while we address this issue.

First off, you can't get mad at this blogger stating the obvious...UND has issues with this sort of thing (media grabbing misconducts) at games they play in. I don't think it's a coincidence that the Sioux are the common denominators in almost every high profile "issue" in the WCHA. Let's see...there's the two DU incidents, slashing Bucky and Hak and Eaves going at it on the ice, the Gopher fight during the hand shakes, Hak and some non-dressed players going after a MTU student for yelling at him...need I go on?

You can pretend your precious Sioux are the victims here but come on!! Obviously there's something going on with them and their coaching staff that creates these issues over and over.

Is it a Hakstol deal? What was the history under Blais?

Also, I do think that Gwoz should not have acted the way he did. However, DU has handed out it's punishment to him and that's good enough. The WCHA should not get into the personnel businness of the individual schools. Hell, even YOU were taking the opposite side of this argument last year when Hak got in trouble for flipping the bird. The WCHA didn't step in then...nor did they step in when Jutting fought with refs after the game at Mariucci...thus why should they step in now?

Also, you're trying to have your cake and eat it too. You are ALWAYS complaining about the refs and how they should be held accountable and how much they suck. Well, in his way Gwoz was doing that and now you're all mad. Come on Goonster!! If your precious UND wasn't involved you would be praising Gwoz. While his actions weren't the best way of bringing the issue to a head, in the end it did...and we should all be greatful for that.

Goon, Goon, Goon...I'm going to steal those green glasses from you when I come there in February!!

    Lighten up:)

  4. Amy this last weekend has nothing to do with the past seasons.
    Chambers is a moron.

  5. How can you say that last weekend's issues has nothing to do with the past? I guess everyone is supposed to ignore the history of the Sioux program and just see it as you guys being the victims and anyone who says differently as morons?

    ReplyDelete
  6. No one said the Sioux were a victim we said their coach was acting like a child. It was great theater and yet their sports writer that wasn't even at the game decides that it is UND fault. That is why he is called the dasher troll.

  7. I think it's fair to say most of your fanbase is taking the "victim stance" on this, focusing totally on Gwoz's actions and that he should be punished, and not what lead up to the actions.

Of course, though, that's the same fanbase that said the exact opposite last year when Hak flipped the bird. They argued that he was totally justified and he should not have gotten into trouble for it and was basically a saint for it.

Interesting how there's one set of rules and values when it's your coach and another when it's not.

I think the bigger picture here isn't "what Gwoz did" as much as it is "why the hell does this stuff keep happening at games that involve UND?"

    ReplyDelete
  8. LGM, do you think its possible for an "incident" to NOT be UND's fault?

I can at least admit that about other teams.

What exactly did UND do to deserve it this time?

    Your bias is showing.

and btw, it's usually crappy teams like the Mavs who have to resort to chippy stuff, not UND.

  9. Victim status, LOL... Ah, Amy we get it you hate the Sioux. Most people's fan bases do.

You're not going to have much fun up here in February if you take an advisory approach to every thing UND. You're going to have a miserable time up here. :)

Ironically the Sioux and the Mav's play on FEB 14th, he, he, he... I think that is funny. The Sioux's dance partner for the weekend is the Mavericks. I wonder who Buress is going to dance with that weekend.

  10. I was agreeing with you Todd Anderson sucks, like I do in many instances. I just Gwoz's approach could have been done differently.

What if Hak had crossed the ice?

Lastly, I am in a great mood today, I am starting to feel better today (damn head cold), got up had breakfast with my daugther, took my daughter to daycare, I am going to walk dakota and then off to the gym, finished off by going to work and living the dream. What else can I ask for?

  11. I haven't said that I think Gwoz's actions were appropriate, just that I'm liking the possible outcome (well, if the WCHA actually does pay more attention to Anderson!).

Oh hell, I decided a long time ago that my trip to UND will be hell. Why do you think it's taken me so long to make it? Hell, I went to TECH before UND!! I just want to come and see the Ralph and will probably never come back. You know where I stand on your fanbase issues!

In order to survive the trip, many many many adult beverages will be consumed:)

I'm expecting the games to be especially bad, given the horrible play of the Mavs lately. I consider that and then look at recent scores UND has had against good teams (UofM, Denver) and I've pretty much set myself up to be ready for UND (enter a double didget number here) and MSU (1, maybe 2). UGH.

No clue who Bruess will dance with. Maybe no one. our little Tyler Thompson and Adam Mueller are more spitfires this year, so maybe one of them will take on Finley:)

Oh, back to Gwoz...crossing the ice wasn't ok at all...though, I think it was more wrong of Anderson to send the message of the ejection over with the captain and then refusing to come talk. It's his responsibility to go to the bench, so I can kinda see why Gwoz walked over. Personally, I think Anderson should get into trouble for not doing his job right.

Hell, even Campion looked annoyed as hell with Anderson from clips I've seen.

Oh, and in Shane Fredrick's latest post he said that Gwoz got up on the Dasher board in Kato years back. Dammit! I sit right by the opposing team's bench. How did I miss that?!? Damn adult beverages at the Alltel.....

  12. Mav-

I don't think you'll find it anywhere that it is Anderson's responsiblity to go over to the bench. It's his reponsibility to call the game, any questions he's willing to take from the bench is a courtesy, not a responsibility. Players are free to ask him as well, he's free to answer or not answer in any way he sees fit.

I've stated elsewhere that I think this has been blown out of proportion, however, I don't think Anderson really owed the DU bench any courtesy at that point. If you were arguing that Anderson missed a bunch of calls both ways or that he did nothing more than live up to his reputation, I'd agree with you.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 2and10- ok, maybe it's not REQUIRED...but they always do it, so Anderson refusing to go talk to Gwoz is still a "no no" in my book.

This is my take on it...Anderson is thin skinned and knows he sucks as a ref and that he had lost ALL control of that game...and so he didn't want to have to argue with Gwoz. In reality, what would he have argued back about or how would he have justified his actions? Instead it was easier to stand across the rink and be in a power struggle.

Also, now there's some talk that Gwoz was walking over there to exit behind the penalty box. Is that where the opposing team exits at the Ralph? I know at SCSU the home team does. Well, if that's the case...then this whole deal makes a little more sense. He was going to exit and the AR stopped him to tell him to go the other way and they chatted. That makes more sense now too, since he didn't approach Anderson.

    Hmm...

You're right though, it's all getting blown out of proportion now.

Let's move on....like let's move on to how Goon is going to wear a Maverick jersey for the Maveric/Sioux game!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Amy you want me to wear a purple cow jersey? :) Only if I can get one with a Backe's number on the back of it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sure. I'll bring some duct tape and make numbers:)

  16. Let's Go Mavs doesn't like Backes. He used to fight in college and she/he doesn't like that stuff. I think he's dropped 'em in the pros a few times...but i'm sure it's the fault of the Sioux. :)

  17. YEA! My friend Archie is back.

I don't like Backes? News to me!

I don't like fights in college hockey? News to me!

Can you let me know what else I do and don't like so I can stay up to date Jughead? Oops, I mean Archie!

  18. Amy, and company:

Towards your argument about Gwoz jumping on the dasher.. You asked what led up to that point? My answer, and the answer from the Pio's homer announcers according to youtube was that they thought Gwoz didn't like the non-call on vandy's check/interference... In fact no one really knows what the cause of it was.. Many speculate it was the check Hextall put on a player in front of the DU bench, some think it was Hexy's mouth, just mind-freaking Gwoz out of his shoes (Gwozy does get emotional A LOT), others thought he was trying to get the refs attention and to take notice of how crappy the calls have been going against his crappy team the whole weekend, some thought he was trying to inspire and jumpstart his team.

No one really knows the answer, but to say it was UND's FAULT??? THAT's a bit over the top, as my glasses aren't that Green anymore..

As to Chambers blog saying Gwoz crossed the ice to get to the locker room?:
I take it you've never been to a game at the ralph, or watched one on tv before?? You'll notice ALL the teams PLAYERS and COACHES, leave the ice through their tunnel that connects directly to their bench.. Gwoz has been there NUMEROUS times, he knows the routine, and for them to report that was to make him look less stupid, and have tried to confuse the masses that are gulible! Which obviously has worked in your case,I mean do you honestly think they're going to build a $164 Million Dollar Hockey Rink, and not build it right?? Do you not think the Architects took into account past Hockey traditions, where it was stupid to have players get on the ice to go back to their locker room to cool off??

Also, so you don't think I'm attacking people personally I'm just addressing the issues, like how people love to claim that everytime their is controversy it always involves UND.

That one is partly true, only because UND's traditional teams don't take cheap shots and don't take chippy play towards them very well. They can't and shouldn't. Reason being is over half the team, will hopefully go on to have a professional career playing hockey, and thuggery/cheap shots/or opponents taking liberties on the Sioux ARE dealt with, like they are in everyother league to protect their top-end players. It's unfortunate that college players on opposing teams feel its necessary to do that to the Sioux or other opponents (because it does happen to other teams, its just that other teams take it), but UND informs its blue chip prospects that it WILL HELP them develop and send them to the next level, without suffering a career-ending injury.

Lastly, looking back to the past 3 coaches, Hakstol probably has the cleanist record. Blais coming in 2nd: Greener's numerous showdowns, Andy Schneider's opening game melee to welcome in the ralph; Commodore, and others.. I'd probably say Gino's years were the most violent, I mean he dealt with some crazy stuff, back when college hockey had crazy stuff go on..

My attention span has been broken, lol, as I had to deal with some customer's lol, stupid work always getting into my blogging, I'm sorry all I'll finish my rant now..

    peace!

  19. Brett- thanks for clairifying the coaching and the Ralph set up thing. No, I haven't been there and the games I've watched have been on the internet and it doesn't show that stuff. I'm going there in a couple of weeks though, so I'll see it in person. Basically, that's why I was inquiring about the set up after reading the other blog.

Interesting about UND's track record under coaches. I really only remember since Hak has been a coach. Prior to that I wasn't all that into college hockey. Once you have a blog you follow stuff more closely. Heck, even this year as I've slacked on the blog I find that I'm not even close to being up to date with stuff like I used to be.

Also...once you wear green tinted glasses, you always wear green tinted glasses, unless you go through a 12 step program:)

  20. Amy there will be no 12 step programs for Sioux fans. There will be no denial. :)
