Props to RPI Hockey. This is the hit that everyone is talking about in the ECAC. Apparently the ECAC refs instructed the Big Red to skate off the ice and not shake hands with the RPI Engineers. Correction: I watched the hit a few times I dunno, I have seen worse go uncalled before. I just don't know if this hit warrants a two game suspension. It definitely isn't a boarding call, but the argument could be made that it was probably a high stick. What do you think?
ALBANY, N.Y. -- ECAC Hockey today announced that Rensselaer junior defenseman Erik Burgdoerfer has been suspended for two games by the League as a result of incidents in the Engineers' contests versus Colgate Friday, January 16 and Cornell Saturday, January 17 at the Houston Field House in Troy, New York.
Burgdoerfer was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for hitting from behind at the 15-minute mark of the third period versus Colgate; and a five-minute major and game disqualification for boarding at the 20-minute mark of the third period versus Cornell. The disqualification penalty automatically carries a one-game suspension as mandated by NCAA ice hockey rules
I think the hit itself wasn't too bad, at most it should be a boarding call, but the issue is he clearly attempted to injure the cornell player. He knew the game was over at that point, they clearly lost the game, so out of anger the hit was to hurt the opposition, and that is why he got suspended. 2 games is a bit much, but he does need some sort of punnishment for that.
ReplyDeleteAside from the high stick I don't see much. Giving the guy a shove doesn't warrant a suspension.
ReplyDeleteI expected to see a lot worse after reading the post.
The Red guy just fell funny.
I don't think he got suspended on the merits of that play alone. He was also called for a CFB in another game that weekend(?). That play alone reminded me a little bit of Robbie Earl for some reason.
ReplyDeleteD-R this guy is actually going to miss three games. Robbie the dive queen earl. The Wild just picked him up in a trade yesterday.
ReplyDeleteThere's no way this is checking from behind; he clearly hit the guy in the front.
ReplyDeleteYou might be right Goon, the only thing I can think of would be high-sticking. Still, you can't see if he caught him prior to the check.
Boarding could be possible, but it doesn't seem to me like it was intent to injure. Also it wasn't right next to the boards. Maybe they could say it was "in a dangerous way". Just seems like a forceful hit, which had a sad result.
Still, I don't see anything majorly wrong. You'd think the league would have to check video in order to hand out the suspension, which hopefully they have a better one than this video. This video is inconclusive. Even if they do have a better camera I can't see how this would be checking from behind.
A quick check of the box score says that's not a hitting from behind penalty but a boarding call.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, if you watch the clip again, you'll see not one, but TWO baseball swing slashes by the same guy, not to mention a cross-check on a different player right on the face off.
Couple that with a hitting from behind major/game misconduct from Friday night late in the third period, and yeah, I'd say two additional games is warranted.
Boarding Call, I don't think it warrants a suspension.
ReplyDeleteNow a suspension for the CFB from the previous game before I don't have a problem with giving the guy an extra game CFB's are bad. The video in question doesn't rise to a level of a two game suspension.
So the league has suspended this guy for the next three games. I dunno, I think it is excessive.
You're missing the point. That hit that you have video of isn't the only thing that the suspension is based on. It's got more to do with his entire body of work than just that one hit - and I love how you're conveniently ignoring the two slashes in the span of seven seconds. In any case, a little bit of research shows the kid's got a history of violent play.
ReplyDeleteHe had a hitting from behind major last year against Cornell that resulted in a game DQ and an additional game suspension. Earlier this season, he had a "slashing the goalie after the whistle" call at Quinnipiac - I didn't even know they had a specific penalty for that. Then you've got two massive hits in the same weekend. He's got two guys from two different teams who won't play at all this weekend at least because of his actions.
It's not like this guy is a first-time offender. He's already been called down to the principal's office once, and it apparently didn't do him any good. Properly so, the penalties get stiffer each additional offense.
You really should try to get it out of your head that this hit alone results in a three-game suspension. Hell, if they really wanted to make the penalty excessive, they shouldn't let him play until both of the guys he knocked out return to the lineup.
Look aemsg13, I said I am cool with the suspension for the CFB, that is probably right on the mark but the hit on the second play while a hard and border line check isn't worthy of another two game suspension.
ReplyDeleteI also mentioned the slash so it isn't like I see it.
ReplyDeletetake away all of the other stuff he did... the hit was not bad by itself the guy was just off balance when he got hit. if it would of been away from the boards it would of been nothing, if the guy would of had 2 feet on the ice when he got hit he wouldnt of even hit the ice
