What about Norse?
With the Fighting Sioux logo debate up front and center with the dust up from the Summit league’s decision to not consider UND until the nickname issue is behind it.
As well all know this is should not be an issue because UND has to change their name/logo if the University can not get approval by both tribes. The issue is not going away and its time to consider the inevitable. Life without the Fighting Sioux nick name and logo. like I have said in the past the name is gone there is no way we can fight off political correctness gone amuck. It is just a matter of time before the name is gone for good.
I an not happy with the fact that there will no longer be a Fighting Sioux name/logo connected to the University of North Dakota. I have made my feeling known, I am on record of being against this change, this is a train we can not stop. I like a lot of fans are tired of fighting the battle with the people in the pro-name change crowd. The cards are against us and we can not win.
Maybe it is time to consider some new names to replace the Fighting Sioux with. My suggestion is Norse. Why not? North Dakota and Minnesota have one of the biggest populations of people of Scandinavian decent in the USA.

One of the cooler ones I've heard is to use Soo like the old railroad. Then we can still be the Soo, and their logo could be similar to Purdue's.
ReplyDeleteI could get on board with that one as well. One person had the Areo's logo as well since UND is an aviation school as well.
ReplyDeleteThat's better than any alternatives I've heard.
ReplyDeleteI also like it that it's somewhat in their face in that how could it be racist when your second choice is naming it after one of the predominant ethnic groups in the area.
I'd be okay with Norse. Fighting Sioux is much better, but yeah I'm sadly thinking it's not going to be winable.
ReplyDeleteI can only think of one team that uses Norse. Luther College (NCAA Division III) in Iowa is the Norse. So Norse is used, but at least it wouldn't a nickname where everyone and their mother has the nickname.
Although, taking from The Whistler's comment, it would be the same thing as using the Sioux. It's be naming after a group that's predominant in the area. Which of course the NCAA wouldn't have a problem with Norse, since Norse isn't Native American.
That's the NCAA for you, using Native American names are wrong, but nicknames after other nationalities (even non-USA indian names like SDSU's Aztecs) aren't. I'd be okay with their stance, if it wasn't being done in a extremly selective manner.
USAF Bulldog, good call my sister went to Luther College. Nice school, in a very nice area.
ReplyDeleteImagine this the Sioux come flying out of a Viking ship with the fog all around them.
I still think Pres. Kupchella screwed the pooch on the nickname. Also the Alumni Assoc. should have boosted their efforts, hired a professional team and they would've handled this situation, similar to what FSU did... I guess we'll find out how much it costs to switch a nickname.. Instead of keeping it..
ReplyDeleteDisappointed because its a select few that's causing this. And the 10 people against the nickname are being multiplied immensely by the media...
Also, I'm part Chippewa, and would love to come back to Pembina County, and stir it up!! lol
ReplyDeleteI still think they should make the people who wanted the nick name pay for it. Maybe UND can petition congress for the name change. Everyone else is getting a bail out.
ReplyDeleteAt some time either the board of higher education (appointed by the governor) or the Governor himself put pressure on the Attorney General to settle the case in such a way that it was going to go.
ReplyDeleteThe whole point was to separate the issue from public opinion. Since we've got a valid court approved settlement there isn't anything that can be done about it.
I'm no Kupchella fan, but I don't blame him for losing the Sioux Logo.
I hate that this argument has been dragged out so long. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Sioux name and logo.
ReplyDeleteNo good suggestions from me, but I honestly think you should be able to keep it.

Let's Go Terriers
I love the fighting Sioux name and logo but I have become tired of the P.C. Nazis/brownshirts and their constant mantra of changing the name, they will not go away. They have blown this all out of proportion. Next thing your going to see is them go after teams that use logos like Bison, Eagles and such.
ReplyDeleteI can't even believe that you're coming to grips with losing the name!! Goonster, you've come so far in life:)
ReplyDeleteOh, and I think they should be the "Goons" and have a cartoon made of your face for the jerseys! That would be kick ass:) hahahhahahahaha!
ReplyDeleteNorse isn't too bad of an idea.
Ooh..or you could be like UAA and have some mythical creature. UND unicorns! Yep, there it is...that would go along with your pink school color.
Oh, or another great one...there's a school in MN that are the "awesome blosoms" (logo is a daisy type plant with a big smily face on it...well, used to smile, maybe not as much any more). I kid you not..it's in Blooming Prairie. Anyways, that would be an awesome logo on a hockey jersey!! Found the logo...here it is: http://www.bpblossoms.com/BPBLOSSOMS/myarticles.asp?S=99&PubID=4423&P=6134
I am SO helpful to you!!
Amy, We don't have a choice they are ramming this down our throats you might as well decide on something cool then get stuck with something we don't like or is stupid. There are a couple of ideas floating around one is the Nokotas (Wild horses that used to roam the plains in North Dakota) that would be eceptable as well.
ReplyDeleteAs far as putting my face on a logo, nah, I don't think so. Fighting Goonsters. :)
I think we'd want people to be proud of wearing the uniform with the logo on it.
ReplyDeleteYeah I don't think we want to scare anyone eh?
ReplyDeleteThe Spanish wiped out the Aztecs, therefore it isn't offensive for us to use their name for a college mascot. Too bad Cortez didn't venture a little farther north, eh?
ReplyDeleteGo back to the original name Flickertails.
ReplyDeleteI say they switch from Sioux to Tribe. No need to change logo either. That way in another 50 years, someone will say their Tribe is offended.. But at least it bought us another 50yrs! (It's like the Gov'ts Soc. Security program!)
ReplyDeleteI am sure Tribe wouldn't be exceptable either. I can remember a team with that name and the NC$$ decided that they didn't like that name either? Although I do like the name.
