A Cross-Check and a Cup Check Draw 5,000 Dollar Fines

Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara has been fined $5,000 by the National Hockey League's Department of Players Safety for Cross-checking Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher. Yes, cross-checking is a dangerous play, but if you watch the video, you will see that Gallagher totally sold the hit and embellished. Gallagher was cross-checked, but he's not innocent in this event.

Here's the video of the incident in question, again, if Chara had actually caught him in the throat and not the shoulder area, Gallagher would've been carried off of the ice on a stretcher. Keep in mind that Chara is one of the strongest players in the NHL.

I've seen suggestions that since Nazem Kadri was suspended for cross-checking Jake DeBrusk, Chara should also be suspended by the NHL. First, Kadri is a repeat offender, Chara isn't. Also, this nowhere near the same type of hit.  

Exhibit B

You've probably seen it by now. Minnesota Defenseman Matt Dumba took exception with a hit that Vegas forward Ryan Reaves put on him. From my seat, it looks like Reaves got away with a boarding call. Whatever. Either way, Dumba is 5,000 dollars lighter in the wallet today.  In my opinion, it was 5,000 dollars well spent. Now, if I was Dumba, I'd keep my head on a swivel next time the Wild play the Golden Knights.

St. Thomas to Summit League?

It looks like The St. Thomas Tommies have found a new home. I sure we'll hear more details very soon. This is a smart move by the Summit League.

It will be interesting to see where the Tommies hockey program ends up. With seven teams breaking from the WCHA and forming their own league, that could be a logical landing spot for the Tommies. The NCHC could also be another landing spot, but Josh Fenton has said that the league is interested in focusing on the eight existing members.

The Vancouver Canucks Re-sign Brock Boeser

Former University of North Dakota All-American Brock Boeser has re-signed with the Vancouver Canucks.

Boeser signs a three-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $5.875 million. In 140 career NHL games with the Canucks, Boeser has scored (59g-57a--116pts).

"We're very pleased to have Brock re-sign," Canucks General Manager Jim Benning said. "He's a talented player, a key contributor to our offense and an important part of our team's future. We look forward to having Brock join the team in preparation for the upcoming season."

Some More TV Options for UND Hockey

As the hockey season nears, the national TV schedules are starting to come out. There are 25 days until the 2019-20 college hockey season begins. I will update if we find out there are more games scheduled for national TV.

As the 2019-20 season approaches, fans will be looking for viewing options to watch college hockey. Most of UND's game will be on some version of television or webcast.

With that said, not everyone likes to watch webcasts. Two seasons ago, I had to up my WIFI game at home to get better NCHC.TV coverage. Whenever I can, I watch the away games on DirecTV instead of NCHC.TV. As I've mentioned in the past, some of the member school's webcasts aren't up to snuff.

Today, we find out that Colorado College will have six of their games on AT&T network. One of those games is against league rival North Dakota.

For those keeping track at home, AT&T SportsNet will be available on DIRECTV channel 684, U-verse channels 757 (SD) and 1757 (HD), and CenturyLink channels 760 (SD) and 1760 (HD).

Last week, the NCHC released its CBSSN schedule. The NCHC has a new two-year agreement with CBSSN. In a release from the league; For the seventh straight season, CBS Sports Network will serve as the premier national television partner of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) with the network set to telecast 11 NCHC games during the second half of the upcoming 2019-20 season. 

As part of a new two-year agreement between the NCHC and CBS Sports Network, the network will once again feature a package of regular-season games and coverage of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. This season, one televised game will take place on each Friday night, plus one Saturday night, starting in mid-January leading up to the 2020 Frozen Faceoff. All regular-season games televised will be conference match-ups, with one originating from each NCHC member’s home arena.

Unfortunately, one viable TV option for watching UND hockey when they're on the road might have evaporated. The Pioneers might not be able to have their games on DirecTV or Dish Network. From our buddies at Lets Go DU -- According to Colorado Hockey Now, “The “carriage” contracts between Altitude TV and Denver and surrounding’s big three cable providers – DISH Network, Comcast/Xfinity and DirecTV – are expiring and the two sides are…not anywhere close to an agreement to re-up with each other.

Fighting Hawks Mascot's Sign Triggers Some in Bison Nation

I am sorry, I thought this sign was funny. Over the course of the last year, the Fighting Hawks mascot has been known to do silly things. That's what mascots do.

Apparently, some in Bison Nation didn't like the sign in question. Some were unhappy that the mascot would dare have that sign on the sidelines during a football game. I mean seriously, have we all become a bunch of snowflakes.

UPDATED: Uninvited Moose Visits Memorial Stadium

Today, an uninvited cow moose visited UND's Memorial Stadium. Stick tap to the Herald's Danielle Podlaski for the great camera work.

University spokesman David Dodds says the moose wandered into Grand Forks overnight and found its way onto old Memorial Stadium on campus Tuesday morning.

 "They are wild animals," Jim Job, a biologist with the North Dakota Department of Game and Fish told the Grand Forks Herald. "Especially if they're in town, they're already going to be a little nervous with all the traffic and people running around already. Definitely, don't want to corner a wild animal or make it feel like it's cornered. Definitely keep your distance because they are very large animals and, if they do feel threatened, they could react."

Shane Stewart's Wild Ride

Earlier this week, Shane Stewart found out that he was parting ways with CJB Motorsports when the season is over.

“We weren’t meshing together,” said Chad Clemens, part-owner of CJB Motorsports. “It’s business. Shane knows the deal. We know the deal. He’s a great guy. Great family. But we’re not meshing as a team. When that happens you have to make changes and that’s pretty much what we chose to do.

Friday night, Stewart week got worse when he took a hard ride in his heat race at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Washington.

WDAY's Dom Izzo Predicts 4-7 Record for UND

Thinking of funny tripe. WDAY sports reporter Dom Izzo doesn’t think that the UND football team is going to be very good this season. Moreover, he seems to think that when the season is overhead coach Bubba Schweigert is going to be looking for a new job. I guess we’ll find out. If I was coach Schweigert, I’d hang this garbage in the locker room. Seriously, this is why they play the games. Football is played on the football field and not in the blogs and newspapers. Time for the Hawks to prove Mr. Izzo wrong.

Last year I said it was a monster year for Bubba Schweigert at UND. If that was monstrous, this year is titanic. Schweigert has to win this season and I’m not sure if they’re going to. The Fighting Hawks have one of the toughest schedules in the FCS, games with NDSU, Eastern Washington, UC Davis and Sam Houston State. If the Fighting Hawks win one of those games, that’s a big deal. I don’t see a winning record this year, and I think UND may be in line for a new coach. (Link)

The Racing World Mourns the Loss of Bryan Clausen

Prior to the 2013 Knoxville Nationals, World of Outlaws sprint car driver Donny Schatz had concerns about the safety of sprint cars.

Schatz expressed these concerns a month after the dirt track racing world had mourned the loss of former NASCAR/Sprint Car Driver Jason Leffler, who died as a result of an accident during sprint car race at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey. During the same time period, his car owner, Tony Stewart, had suffered a broken leg as a result of a violent crash during a World of Outlaws show in Iowa.

In retrospect, maybe Schatz was on to something?

"I'm not confident that safety measures are (being) met in this sport. There are a lot of people that are working hard to perfect things, to make things better. But sometimes people don't see things until people get hurt," Schatz told the Associated Press. "There are some areas that safety can be addressed. But it's also a gray area that no one wants to get involved in."

This week, fans will attend the 55th Annual FVP Knoxville Nationals with a heavy heart as they mourn the death of Sprint car driver Bryan Clausen. The Indiana native died on August 7, 2016, a result of injuries he suffered from an accident at Belleville (Kansas) Midget Nationals USAC midget race. Clausen was leading the race when he flipped and t-boned by another driver that was a lap down.

Many fans again will ask the question why?

Something to ponder – sprint car racing – both USAC and winged sprint cars are exciting race cars to watch. They’re also very dangerous. Everything happens in a split second. The race cars seem to get faster by the year, 410 sprints cars weigh roughly 1,500 pounds and are powered by a 900 horsepower engine. You wonder sometimes if the safety measures can keep up with the technology?

The driver is literally sitting in a high-tech rocket ship made out of lightweight metal. On the longer tracks, a sprint car can hit speeds of at least 140 miles an hour. Mistakes at a high rate of speed can be fatal.

The loss of Bryan Clausen is tragic. The racing world has lost another amazing, talented young driver way too early. Clausen was known for his ability to race at a high level on many different circuits and he will be missed. For now, it's hard to make any sense of this tragic loss. When I saw this play for the first time, I thought holy cow, that looked funny. One might even suggest that Austin Poganski took a dive. Now, even though Poganski is from Minnesota, he isn't known for being a diver or a player that embellishes. So, did Poganski take a dive?

A look at the Stats

I have no idea how this season plays out, but UND has been on a remarkable run. This morning I was reading the Brad Schlossman’s blog and I found a few stats that I wanted to expound on. Over the last 49 games, UND has gone 39-6-4 (.836).

Over the last 19 games, UND has a 17-1-1 (.921) record. The last team to beat the Fighting Hawks was the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in the Frozen Faceoff. The last tie came against the Denver Pioneers 1-1, in the third place game of the Frozen Faceoff.

Over the last 22 home games, UND is 20-1-1 (.931). During that 22-game run, UND has lost one game, in overtime, to the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks 4-3. The tie in question came during a game against the Colorado College Tigers. UND would go on to win the shootout.

Finally, for those keeping track, the last opponent to sweep the Fighting Hawks, the Denver Pioneers Feb. 12-13, 2016 at Denver (6-4, 4-1). That sweep came two and a half seasons after UND was swept by the St. Cloud State Huskies Nov. 1-2, 2013 (3-2, 3-1) at St. Cloud State

Dixon Bowen is in for Cole Smith. The rest of the lineup is the same. No changes. Brock Boeser now has 10 points after four games.

Check out the highlights from last night's game... Both teams put in good efforts and UND used their skill to take the game away from BSU. I also thought UND got a huge break on the penalty shot.

I noticed that there're a few changes in the lineup, defenseman Christian Wolanin is out of the lineup tonight. If I get any information on that I will post an update. Also, Rhett Gardner is back after being out of the lineup the last two games. Gardner has a lower-body injury. Finally, Dixon Bowen is a scratch. 

The Jet's Laine Scores the Game-Winning Goal Against the Leafs

In my humble opinion, Patrick Laine and Auston Matthews are the two  best rookie forwards in the NHL this season. Another game, another great effort by Auston Matthews. However, the fact remains, they're the same old Toronto Maple Leafs that can't hold a lead. Once again, they score four goals and then blow a four goal lead. Laine scored his first ever career hat trick including this beautiful game-winning goal to sink the Leafs. In three games, Laine has scored (4g-2a—6pts).

NDSU President Wants Fans to Discontinue 'Racist' Chant

I've never understood why NDSU fans still chant Sioux Suck? NDSU  fans chanted that after their favorite team won a NCAA FCS title in 2016.

Think about it, UND has played NDSU once in football since 2003. Apparently, the much maligned NDSU president Dean Bresciani is tired of the chant and wants NDSU fans to discontinue this practice. I imagine if UND ends up in the Summit League, Bresciani will hear that cheer a lot more.

Frankly, I think it's a dumb chant, too. I think that chant lacks originality. Same goes for the F#(K the Bison up the @$$, neither chant took a lot of thought. I guess no one told the fans that UND dropped the name Fighting Sioux back in 2012. Of course, Fighting Hawks suck probably doesn't have the same ring to it. Right?

Don't worry NDSU fans, there are many UND fans that think that name sucks, too. Now that being said, I realize this is a college sporting event. There’s going to be bad behavior and coarse language. That’s life.  I also love explaining to my nine-year-old what the fans are saying. Finally, UND fans are disrespecting the Fighting Sioux nickname like the NDSU fans are.

A letter to the editor in the campus newspaper, The Spectrum, calling for an end to the chant has prompted leaders at NDSU, including President Dean Bresciani, to urge students and others to end the tradition.

"We suspect people are continuing this chant out of a misplaced sense of tradition, and we are asking any who do so to re-evaluate their participation," an email sent Friday, Oct. 14 to the campus community said. The joint email was signed by Bresciani, the student body president, the presidents of the faculty and staff senates and several other top administrators.

"We challenge anyone using hateful, thoughtless language to reflect on that language," the email said. "We believe that people continuing to use these chants are not understanding that these chants are hurtful; they do not reflect the aspiration of NDSU to be a welcoming community." Look I am not claiming to be a smart person. I am not a Midwesterner either. On a good hot-dish day I might be a Minnesotan.

Be that as it may, I don’t understand why you guys call it pop. I also don’t understand why you insist on reciting this terribly racist chant.

This chant is embedded in the fact that our only true competition for best university in the state comes from our neighbors to the north, the University of North Dakota.

Oh my. Look who chimed on this matter. I wonder if he knows the difference between NDSU and UND? He probably thinks this is UND's fault, but I digress.

Grand Forks Herald Letter: Fighting Hawks end UND's logo curse

From today's letter to the editor, Travis Oliver from Crookston, Minnesota says that the old Fighting Sioux logo was cursed. Thoughts?

To sum up, Ben Brien's Sioux head logo never won a NCAA national title. All the great players, all the great teams—and that logo cursed them.

Sure, it's possible that UND wasn't cursed, and they lost those games for other reasons. But the next time you look up at the eight national-title banners hanging in the Ralph, realize that not only were none of them won with that logo, but the two most recent wins bookend the logo's use.

These are the exact elements that make up curses throughout sports history.

UND fans still despise the NCAA for taking the Sioux logo. Seems disrespectful to me, to hate the very organization that supplies you with what you cherish most: national titles.

Jonathan Toews Versus. James Neal

Former Fighting Sioux All-Amerian Jonathan Toews isn't paid to get into fights, but he isn't afraid to defend himself either. Especially, if he's getting cheap shotted. Last night, Toews had enough of James Neal and agreed to fight.   According to Hockey Fights, Toews has been in 6 NHL hockey fights.

HOF Game: UND vs. RPI

There are some changes to the lineup tonight. UND's Rhett Gardner will be out for tonight's game. He's listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Chase Perry starts in net for RPI tonight. He's the son of former UND goalie, Craig Perry. Cole Smith makes his UND debut.
