Angry Birds vs. Red Cows - Game 1

As most of you know by now, the Mavericks starting freshman goalie,  Evan Weninger is out this weekend with an ankle injury. Weininger didn’t make the trip to Grand Forks this weekend.

Here's the first curveball of the weekend by Mavericks head coach Dean Blais. Almost everyone assumed junior goalie Kirk Thompson would make the start for the Mavericks. Nope. Not a chance. As most of us know, coach Blais never does anything the easy way. Going against the grain, Blais will start freshman goalie, Alex Blankenburg in net for the Mavericks tonight. Blankenburg is a rookie goalie that’s never played a game in college. Why not throw him into the first? Right?

Tonight, UND fans will also get their first look at Derek Shepherd this weekend.

Trip Down Memory Lane: UND vs. UNO

It's been a quiet week, not much has been going on. I would call it the calm before the storm. Not a lot of news leading up to the game between UND and UNO. The Mavericks starting goalie is banged up and it appears that he won't make the trip this weekend.

My Take on April Gehl's Tweet

By now you probably heard about the April Gehl's now viral tweet that landed her a five-game suspension from her Hilbert High School basketball team. I have been following this story, I find it interesting.

Based on her tweet, I think five games is a bit excessive and I think her high school (who imposed the excessive suspension) should cut her suspension to a more reasonable length, like a game or two. Seriously, her punishment doesn't fit the crime. It's excessive. The kid was tweeting her opinion. Don't we want our kids to think critically?

I also think that the WIAA needs to take another look at their moronic, mind-numbing rules that they expect the students to follow. Being a kid is supposed to be fun and attending sports is part of the growing up experience. If I attended a high school in Wisconsin, I might just consider staying home.

Gehl's tweet was in response to an email from the WIAA. Here's a clip from that email in question.
Included in the WIAA email were examples such as “You can’t do that,” “Fundamentals,” “Air ball,” “There’s a net there,” “Sieve,” “We can’t hear you,” the “scoreboard” cheer and “season’s over” during tournament play. (USA Today)

First, as a parent, I think this is a teachable moment. This is an opportunity for a lesson to be learned. Giving her a five-game suspension only really teaches her that we are to fear authority and your opinion isn't welcome. Now get in line. This is a horrible lesson to teach a kid that's preparing for the adulthood. High school is where you learn right from wrong. This is part of the educational experience.

Do you want our kids telling an athletic association to "eat shit"? Probably not. She didn't even include the "@" symbol. If anything maybe the WIAA needs to stay out of the kids social media accounts. That's what they have parents for. Gehl also did it on her personal account. I like the fact that she didn't take the tweet down.

If anything, we should be happy that kid has an opinion and isn't just a sheep, follower, or a conformist. This is an opportunity to show that maybe this wasn't best response and encourage them to use a better way of communicating your thoughts. When I read the rules, I can see her point.

Do we really expect our kids not to yell scoreboard or brick? I don't. These are tame cheers and no way offensive.

Finally, I think we need to use this as an opportunity to let our kids know that there's probably a better way to communicate your feeling. There has to be a better way than going on social media and telling somebody where to stick it -- to eat shit -- or just suck it.

By the way, Gehl, a senior, and is the team's leader in points and rebounds.  She started serving her suspension this past weekend. The Gehl's aren't going to appeal the suspension, either.

Stupid is as Stupid Does

This past weekend, the North Dakota State University won an impressive fifth FCS NCAA Football championship in a row. No other team has been able to make this claim. This is a historic event. As a sports fan, you have to give credit where credit is due. This will be a hard accomplishment to ever beat. Shall we say, the bar has been set very high by the NDSU Bison. I would be surprised if this record is ever beaten in our lifetime.

As the final seconds are ticking off of the game clock, NDSU fans took time out to chant “Sioux suck.” No seriously. Your team just won another FCS title and some clown starts a Sioux sucks chant. It would be safe to say that this person wasn't an honor student at NDSU. Nor would they make the cut at UND.

This wasn’t the only time that our buddies to the south did something silly this past weekend. Froggy 99.9 took it upon themselves to take a shot at UND. Seriously, if you're going to take a shot or get in a good dig at UND, at least, be original. If I had to make a guess, this employee in question must have been a fan of a school we no longer play in hockey that's approximately 300 miles south of us.  Is it all in good fun right?

Per the Grand Forks Herald: Froggy 99.9, a Fargo-Moorhead country radio station owned by Midwest Communications, had staff in Frisco covering the festivities and handing out awards to tailgaters.

One award-winner for best sign had UND's interlocking "ND" crossed out and said "Fighting Whioux" and then "suck," Kuntz said.

Froggy 99.9 posted a picture of the award-winners holding a certificate with the anti-UND flag and quickly got some negative feedback.
But I digress. Congrats to the Bison for beating Jacksonville State. You earned. I hope next season your team falls flat on their face next season and fails miserably. That being said, your quarterback Carson Wentz was fun to watch. I hope the Vikings make a run at signing him. You can’t help it that some in your fan base act like eight-year-olds.

Finally, when UND wins its next national championship in hockey or whatever sport, I doubt our fans are going to chant “Bison Suck.” They probably won’t even think of your university.

Last weekend, the University of North Dakota was idle and played in an exhibition game against the U-18 team. UND would beat U-18 4-1.

This week, the Fighting Hawks remain in the no 1. Position at least for another week.

Tweet of the Week

My favorite tweet of the week is by Michael Russo of the Star Tribune. Russo makes a great point. Can you imagine spending money on this game? The last NHL game that I attended cost me $77.00. And was more exciting than this gem.

For the most part, this season, the NHL, except for a handful of teams and games has been boring to watch. Almost unwatchable. This game is almost as bad at the 1-0 game that UND lost to BSU on November 20, 2011.

Alex Ovechkin Nets 500

Washington Capitals All-World forward Alex Ovechkin scored his 500th goal of his career against the Ottawa Senators. IMHO, Ovechkin is one of the greatest hockey players of my lifetime. Ovie joins some pretty good players in the 500 goal club.

Brad Malone Will Not Be Suspended for Hit on Nick Foligno

Last night, at the 14:55 mark of the third period, former Fighting Sioux forward Brad Malone laid this hit on Nick Foligno. The Blue Jackets captain was injured on the play and has been placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.  Foligno will not be available for Saturday's game.

Further inflaming the matter for some fans, Malone will not be suspended for the hit. I looked at the hit last night, and I don't know. That was a tough call to make.

Everyone's favorite Blue Jacket Brandon Dubinsky would later challenge Malone for his hit on Foligno.

For those keeping track at home. Malone has now been in five NHL fights this season. That's good for 10th in the NHL. (Hockeyfights.com) It wasn't much of a fight, and it was ruled a draw.

To make matters more interesting, the two teams play again tonight. There could be some fireworks.

Dave Hodge: Thumbs down to discipline disconnect

First, this article says what a lot of fans have been saying for a very long time, in all levels of hockey. I have begun to refer to this as blow the f'n whistle.

If you monitor social media this is a reoccurring theme, nightly. The refs aren't calling the game of hockey by the book. When fans say it, they're just blind homers.

That being said, someone needed to say it. What gives it credibility; someone from a major  sports channel in Canada put it to print. And now it's out there.

After the NHL lockout of 2004-05, the refs were calling stick penalties and the obstruction. Now, the refs have basically declined back to the days of the clutching and grabbing up and down the ice. No wonder Sidney Crosby can't score, he has two guys in his hockey pants.
Dave Hodge, TSN -- According to the league, the refs aren't making the proper calls.

Corrections made after the fact do nothing to satisfy the teams that deserved better during the game.

Where video review and coach challenges are concerned, it's all about transparency and getting the calls right, but that's not the case with penalty calls. It should be.

Apart from addressing the need to show that the refs and their overseers are working from the same rulebook, the NHL should treat all calls by officials the same way. If the legality of goals can be determined by video and not by the refs' eyes, if coaches can challenge the failure to call goalie interference and offside, hits such as those delivered by Sill and Johansson should be subject to review on the spot, and proper penalties and power plays awarded.

It's too late the following day. And it's too late to make the argument that the refs' judgment needs to be respected. It isn't anymore.
For those wondering who Dave Hodge is, he's been with TSN.CA since 1992.
While we're on the subject of officials and off-ice officials. Zeke from the Hockey Writers also addresses the Department of Player Safety and their lack of consistency.
The NHL DPS comes out a loser. Whatever credibility they might have gained from going after Torres was short-lived. That credibility was lost by a failure, a chronic failure, to enforce player safety in a broader way with any real sense of diligence. For example, the opening night head-butt by Dustin Brown on Logan Couture in the video clip below drew nothing from the DPS. The list of offenses that DPS has managed to ignore is ridiculous. If someone attempted to compile a list of the top ten offenses the DPS ignored, they be swamped by the available material. The only player that needs to fear a harsh reaction from the DPS is Raffi Torres. That sort of hypocrisy not only hurts the game, it insures the DPS has no credibility in the eyes of the people it must be credible to – the players.

Who's the Best Player in College Hockey?

Eric Sorenson of ESPN has his mid-season rundown of college hockey. First I realize that ESPN is stationed in Bristol, Connecticut and they have a hard time seeing past Michigan when it comes to college hockey.

Second, I want to be clear,  Michael Garteig is a great goaltender, but is he really the best player in the NCAA?
Best player: Michael Garteig, G, Quinnipiac

Garteig has been a block of granite for the Bobcats in their 17-1-3 start. The senior broke QU records for career wins (62) and longest shutout streak (194 minutes, 49 seconds) so far this season. His goals-against average is 1.35, which is within striking distance of the D-I record of 1.19, held by Maine's Jimmy Howard in 2004.
For comparison sake: Michael Garteig is ranked fifth in the NCAA, Cam Johnson is first overall. Yes, you read that correctly. Johnson leads the nation in goals-against average and save percentage.
Johnson is currently the top ranked goalie in division I college hockey (9-0-1, 1.07 GAA and .957 save percentage). Since returning from injury, Johnson is (8-0-0, 0.50 goals-against average, .981 save percentage).

Yesterday, Johnson was also named the NCHC Player of the Month for December. Today, Johnson was named the Hockey Commissioners’ Association (HCA) National Division I Player of the Month for December.
All things aside, who's the best player in college hockey?

Fighting Hawks Nickname not Catching on Quickly

Don't worry, the Fighting Hawks nickname isn't going anywhere anytime soon. That being said, the nickname isn't catching on as fast as some would like. The University of North Dakota is phasing in the new nickname. This past weekend, P.A. address Darrin Looker didn't say Fighting Hawks at full strength at the end of a penalty kill. This weekend, it was phased in somewhere else.
Looker: “I don't think it's very effective if you kill that penalty and it's met immediately with 11,000+ people booing.”

So for now, it's been removed from parts of the game, But the university still has the name scripted into pregame ceremonies and in other places during the production. So it's almost certain that fans should get used to their new name.

Looker: “Eventually you know the fans are so supportive and so great that they'll come around to it. At the end of the day it's North Dakota, it's the UND culture and that's the number one thing." (WDAZ)
