(Video) Chicago Blackhawks: Michal Handzus scores the game-winning goal - game 5

That's the first ever overtime game-winning goal that Chicago Blackhawks forward Michal Handzus has scored and I guess he picked a good time to score it. Patrick Kane assisted on four-of-five Blackhawks goals. So, we will have hockey on Friday night in L.A.. I still think that the KIngs will this series. Nonetheless, this was a great hockey game.

NCAA Hockey: Penalize the players who Embellish?

I am a subscriber to XM Radio, and I listen to the Hockey Night In Canada Radio a couple of times a week. Today, Hockey Night in Canada Radio had an awesome segment on officiating during the 3:00 p.m. hour.

Former NHL Official and current ECAC head of officials Paul Stewart was on with the HNIC co-hosts (Rob Pizzo and Elliotte Friedman), and he had some interesting things to say. One thing that caught my attention was his proposal that he made to the NCAA about punishing players that embellish. There's more coming on that this week.

Some of his proposal was to give players who embellish a five-minute misconduct penalty. After three five-minute misconducts, that player would sit for a game. After four five-minute misconducts, that player would sit for two games. Also, the linesmen and refs could make the call. I think it's a great idea.

Russia - Finland WC 2014, Malkin breaks Haula jaw with dirty cross-check

If you haven't seen it, this is worth a look. In the championship game of the World Championship, Russian forward Evgeni Malkin's cross-checked  Finland's Erik Haula in the face and injured him. I think this is one of the dirtiest cross-checks that I have seen this season. It was blatant, and one could make that argument that it was an attempt to injure. Uh-yeah, obviously. Malkin broke Haula's jaw with that bush league move.

According to Michael Russo of the Star and Tribune, Haula will not need surgery, that is very good news. The Russian ended up winning the game.  As you can see from the video the reffing was very suspect.
Russo's Rants -- Some Wild news: Center Erik Haula, who left the day after the playoffs to represent Finland in the world championships, broke his jaw in the gold-medal game against Russia when he was cross-checked in the face by superstar Evgeni Malkin. No penalty was called. Haula sustained a nondisplaced fracture that will not require surgery. The injury will take three to four weeks to heal, the Wild says.

Are the Rangers and Habs gooning it up?

This is the series I expected the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins to have, but didn't. There three more hearings with the NHL's Department of Player Safety today. Shouldn't be too much longer and we will have the rulings from the league office. Suspensions are usually announced in the late afternoon after the hearings are over. This has been an emotional, hard fought series, and it's starting to show up on the score sheet.

That being said, the Rene Bourque cross check and the Derek Dorsett headbutt could end up costing both teams more games. John Moore is most definitely going to miss a game or two for his dirty hit on Dale Weise.

Update: John Moore has a hearing for his on Dale Weise (Video)

New York Rangers forward John Moore was given a five-minute major and a match penalty for this hit on Montreal Canadians forward Dale Weise. I would be very shocked if Moore is playing in the next game. The hit was way late, and very high.

According to numerous beat writers on twitter, Moore will have a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety tomorrow. I expect that Moore will be suspended by the NHL. Brandon Prust was suspended for two games for almost the same hit.

Montreal Canadiens: Tomas Plekanec Gets a Two-Minute Diving Penalty

The Montreal Canadiens have been diving up and down the ice, all series long, and this was another blatant example of textbook embellishment. Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec was correctly penalized in this instance.

UND could end up losing recruit Ryan Mantha, depending on who drafts him

As a fan of the University of North Dakota, none of us are shocked by these revelations. We have seen it numerous times. We will see it again, probably sooner rather than later.

Stick a fork in the Chicago Blackhawks they're done, finished

University of North Dakota hockey fans are watching this series with much interest. I know that some aren’t going to like what I have to say, but stick a fork in the Blackhawks, because they’re done. The L.A. Kings have taken control of this series, and will be shaking hands with the Hawks at the end of game five in Chicago. The Kings are starting to resemble the ones that won the Stanley Cup in 2012, mean, relentless and solid defensively.

The Kings have been relentless in this series and haven’t let the Blackhawks get many any “Grade-A” scoring chances from the slot or in close. The Kings have owned the blue paint and when the Hawks have gotten the puck through to Jonathan Quick. The former UMASS goaltender has been a brick wall and has frustrated the Hawks.

This Kings have done a good job shutting down the Chicago Blackhawks best players, while Jonathan Toews has been able to score (3g-1a—4pts). His sidekicks have been almost invisible. Patrick Kane has scored (0g-1a—1pts) and Bryan Bickell has scored (0g-1a—1pts) against the Kings, that’s two points between the both of them. Marian Hossa has been okay, scoring (0g-3a—3pts). The Hawks best players need to be better if they want to extend this series.

I have to wonder if it’s a coincidence, but in this series against the Blackhawks the Kings are 3-0 when former Fighting Sioux defenseman Matt Greene is in the line-up. Breaking it down further, the Kings are statistically a better team (8-4, .667) with Greene in the line-up. When Greene is sitting in the stands, the L.A. Kings own a (3-3, .500). You have to wonder if the Kings want to have Greene sitting in the stands, anymore.

(Video) Fraser: Making the call (again) on embellishment

It's about time that someone said this. It adds credibility when a former NHL Official is the one that is pointing this out. As a hockey fan, I have become disgusted with the amount of embellishment that plagues the NHL and NCAA hockey.
Kerry Frasier, TSN -- I concur with Mike Milbury and Eddie O's analysis with regard to obvious embellishment committed by PK Subban and Tomas Plekanec in the second period of Sunday night's game.

Even though the stick of Rick Nash did catch Subban in the face the upward launch with both legs was not a natural reaction or fall from being struck in that manner. Plekanec's theatrical performance was the absolute worst when he threw his head back and grabbed at his face after the flat blade of Brian Boyle's stick slapped nothing but shoulder pad!

Even though Boyle's stick did not quite fit the criteria of a "high stick (above the height of the opponents shoulders) it was used in a careless manner and could certainly result in a slashing penalty. Plekanec's embellishment was also worthy of a penalty that should have resulted in an on-ice numerical strength of four aside. Given Plekanec's blatant overreaction it could even been deemed a 'stand alone' embellishment penalty if the ref wanted to send a clear message but I doubt he would receive much support.
This closing paragraph really hit home with me.
Until players that embellish are penalized by the referees and held accountable by the League with published fines and suspensions as prescribed in rule 64.3, this illegal act will continue to plague the game. It's time for everyone involved to man-up.

Winona Minnesota-area inventor creates robot for ice resurfacing

The Zamboni could be a think of the past, in the near future.
Tesla Rodriquez, Winona Daily News -- Buffalo County resident Paul Van Eijl said his invention, which he calls the “Ice Jet,” will do the ice resurfacing job of the classic machine much quicker — in about a minute or so — using GPS coordinates to control multiple machines at once.

It won’t need a driver, will be electrically powered and will recycle the ice collected by melting it in the machine and using the water to resurface the hockey rink. His invention isn’t on the market yet, though a prototype has been enough to generate a phone call from the reality television show “Shark Tank,” which highlights inventors and entrepreneurs hoping to make it big.

“It’s really doing the same thing (as a Zamboni),” Van Eijl said as he stood next to his prototype on a recent day. “You’re just basically making it eight times as efficient.”

The 1940s-era, ice-resurfacing Zamboni has been an icon in hockey, as it putters around the arena between games and periods to smooth the ice for players. And for the most part, it’s remained unchanged, Van Eijl said. Most run on gas or propane — although newer ones are electric — and are about the size of a truck. Each requires a driver, and use quite a bit of water.
According to the author's comment, The "Ice Jet" is planned to complete the resurfacing of the whole rink in one minute or so.

(Video) Martin St. Louis game-winning goal game four

New York Rangers forward Martin St. Louis makes no mistake as he buries the game-winning goal to give the New York Rangers a 3-2 win in overtime. This was an absolutely snipe. Hat tip to Carl Hagelin who had a two point game tonight.

(Video) Tomas Plekanec embellishment, Brian Boyle two minutes

This is a weak penalty in my opinion. Montreal Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec should have gotten a Emmy for his award winning performance. No really, he should have gotten a two-minute minor for embellishment. Now lets be clear, New York Rangers forward Brian Boyle shouldn't be hitting Plekanec up high with his stick, but that's a brutal call by the officials. Plekanec would make the Vancouver Canucks forwards' Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows blush with that one.

Is Pierre Maguire going to the Pens?

I would imagine that NHL hockey fans in the USA would cheer on such a move, unless you're a fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Think of it this way, NHL fans in the USA would no longer have to listen to NBC Sports NHL analyst Pierre Maguire as he annoys fans from between the players boxes. As a regular NHL viewer, I would applaud such a move.
Bob Pompeani Show --- Scotty Bowman worked closely with NBC Sports NHL analyst Pierre Maguire who has been rumored to be a possible candidate for the open general manager position with the Pens.

He tells Bob that Maguire has been a candidate recently for many open positions and that he has a real desire to return to a team.

“He has a good broad knowledge of amateur hockey,” Bowman said. “But the big thing he has going for him for me is that he has a lot of connections. He has kept up with the hockey league. He is a hard worker. His knowledge of the NHL would be very high for sure.”

Candiens Coach, "we know exactly where Derick Brassard is injured"

So, the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens Michel Therrien has cause a stir with these comments.
"We expect Derick Brassard to play and we know exactly where he's injured. Hockey is a small world," Therrien reportedly said in French, according to a tweet by a French-speaking TV reporter. (Newsday)
That almost sounds like the head coach of the Canadiens put a bounty on someone's head. New York Rangers Beat writer Larry Brooks of the New York Post, thinks the NHL should look into this matter. Sounds like it could be an exciting game tonight.

(Video) Michel Therrien Confronts Ulf Samuelsson During Practice

Montreal Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien is really a cry baby... Therrien did nothing but cry and complain during the second round series between the Boston Bruins and Canadiens as well. He confronts Ulf Samuelsson during the Canadiens team practice. Seriously, what are the Habs going to give away during their practice?
SNYRangers Blog -- Therrien’s quote on the subject was “There is always a gentleman’s agreement between two teams and the general manager that coaches are not allowed to attend practices between games. Game day is different. So when we saw those assistant coaches there, they were not supposed to be there, so we let them know.” (via the NHL)

(Video) Jonathan Toews scores a nice goal against Jonathan Quick

Chicago Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews knows how to get to the blue paint, this is a perfect example of this. Toews scored two goals in the first period of game three of the Western Conference Finals, but this one was a thing of beauty.

(Video) Rangers Daniel Carcillo Car Bombed by the NHL, Prust and Dorsett fight

Today, the NHL car bombed Daniel Carcillo. The Rangers pugilist has been suspended for 10 games for his abuse of an NHL official, I think the suspension should be 20 games. There's no excuse for pushing, hitting and or elbowing an NHL linesman or referee.

Looking at the video, this was in the first six minutes of the first period of game three. I included the P.K. Subban and Derek Dorsett exchange. It almost looks like a slew-foot. There was no penalty on the play.

The fight between Dorsett and Brandon Prust is per the hockey code. I don’t have a problem with this fight, and in this instance the code worked. Prust took out one of the Montreal Canadiens with a dirty hit, Dorset challenged him to a fight and Prust accepted the challenge.

Brandon Prust Hit on Derek Stepan, Prust suspended two games

A two-game suspension is an joke , and no where near enough for this dirty, predatory hit.

These types of dirty hits have no place in the game of hockey, at any level. There's no defending this hit. It's a brutal, late, and it's interference. There's also significant contact with the head. This hit is unacceptable. Because of Brandon Prust's dirty hit, Derek Stephan has a broke jaw that required surgery today.
