Video evidence that UND was on side for Rocco Grimaldi's goal

Rico Blasi was livid after Rocco Grimaldi's goal, apparently he thought the UND was offsides at the blueline. After reviewing the video, you can see it was a good goal.

Evidence of Questionable Officiating Feb. 15 - UNO/DU Game (Redwing77)

An ice hockey referee signals a penalty for hi...

Ok, this isn't UND related but...  I saw a play that had everyone, including the commentators on NET baffled.  Unfortunately, I do not have the capability to record off of my DVR to my computer so... I hope it shows up somewhere.

Here's the situation:  UNO's Tanner Lane (#7) is chasing DU's David Makowski (#10) into the DU zone after a puck.  Right after Makowski takes possession of the puck and heads deeper into the zone, Tanner Lane swings his stick at the back of Makowski's helmet.  Here's the thing:  The Ref is looking DIRECTLY at the play.  No Call.  Here's where it gets dicey.  Replay is inconclusive as to whether or not Lane's stick even touches Makowski.  If it did, it would have hit right on the crown of the back of Makowski's helmet.  Ok, seems cut and dry right?  NO CALL????

Let's say contact WAS made.  Isn't that Slashing?  Contact to the head?  It is DEFINITELY a penalty, right?

Ok, so no contact was made.  Makowski skates 3-4 full slides before ducking, then ducking more, then crumpling to the ice just in time to slide across the back red line (the incident occurred just at the top of the faceoff circles in the DU zone along the boards).  Uh....  I'm no expert, per se, but if you got chopped in the BACK OF THE HEAD by a STICK, wouldn't the pain or impulse to go down be, say, INSTANT?  HE NEVER LOST POSSESSION OF THE PUCK UNTIL HE TURTLED!!!!!!

So, here's what I see:  The Ref HAS to make a penalty one way or another.  EITHER WAY it is a penalty!  If contact was made, the NCAA MANDATES contact to the head is a penalty!!!!  If contact was NOT made then the RULEBOOK requires that a penalty gets called because Makowski DOVE.  And, lets face it, faking a head injury is well.... to put it bluntly:  it's the opposite of sportsmanship.

IF Don Adam does INDEED review officiating performances, then these two buffoons in Omaha tonight will be getting a rather tense phone call.  Either the integrity of the game was pissed upon, or the refs just gave the middle finger to player safety.  Either way, that's BAD officiating.

UND Holds on to Beat Miami 3-2

Grand Forks, ND – The University of North Dakota hockey team has been on a tear during the second half of the season. With the 3-2 win on Friday night against the Miami RedHawks, they improve their record to 11-2-1 in the last 14 games and (15-9-3, 10-7 NCHC) overall. UND is now tied with Nebraska-Omaha for second place in the NCHC with 30 points.

Junior forward Mark MacMillan has been on a hot streak for UND, the junior forward from Penticton, British Columbia, chipped in two goals and an assist to lead UND. During the last nine games, MacMillan has scored (5g-6a—11pts). When asked about his junior forward, head coach Dave Hakstol has this to say.

“He played a good hockey game,” Hakstol said. “He was moving his feet. He used his linemates well. I thought he played a good hockey game. I don’t think there was anything spectacular, but he played a real good hockey.”

Coming into the game, the UND power-play has been ice cold, and hadn’t scored a power-play goal since January, 24, 2014.  On Friday night, UND finally broke through on the power-play going 1-for-6.  After the game, coach Hakstol had this to say about UND’s struggling power-play.

“You guys are making a big deal about it, not me,’ Hakstol said. “We had a bad weekend last weekend, that’s all. You can put that behind you. We did a good job tonight. Tonight’s a new night.”

This past week, UND made some adjustments on their power-play. The coaching staff moved junior forward Stephane Pattyn to the power-play and it seemed to work.

“One of the areas where I thought we were better tonight was gaining possession in the offensive zone,” Hakstol said. “That’s one of the things that Steph Pattyn is pretty good at.  He’s a big body and a strong guy that can go to the front of the net. Maybe that’s something he can bring as well. Probably first thing is getting in and getting that initial possession.

UND’s lone power-play goal wasn’t a thing of beauty, but that didn’t seem to matter to the burly assistant captain.

“It wasn’t pretty, but it counts,” Pattyn said. “We have put a lot of work on power-play and made a couple of changes, so we’ll take it.”

Coming into the game, Clarke Saunders had been lights out on Friday nights and not so good on Saturday nights. Last night, Saunders stopped 31-of-33 shots (.939%). Even with the bad game last Saturday, Saunder’s teammates never lost confidence in their starting goalie.

“He had a good game night tonight, Hakstol said. “Especially when the game was 3-1, I thought he made two or three key saves to keep the game at 3-1. I thought he did a good job tonight.”

“Not at all, He was great all week in practice,” Pattyn said. “We have faith in him. We knew he was going come back and have a great game and if he’s in tomorrow he will do the same thing.”

With the win, the UND head coach surpassed the 250 win mark. After the game, coach Hakstol was asked about his thoughts on getting his 250th win tonight.

“I didn’t know that,” Hakstol said. “No comment. It was a good team win for us. I thought we had some good play out of all of our lines. We’ve got to get ready for a battle tomorrow.”

UND will try to push his win total to 251 when they play the second game of the two-game serious tonight at 7:00 P.M. Central at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Breaking it down further, UND is 15-2-1 when they score three or more goals. UND is 0-7-2 when they score two or less.

USA Hockey: The best hockey team you've never seen

Dave Hogg, FOX Sports Detroit wrote this article and I thought it was worth a look. Good stuff here. Some things to think about as USA Hockey plays in the 2014 Sochi Olympics games.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- "The U.S. is a powerhouse now, and you can see the envy in the programs from other countries," U-17 coach Don Granato said. "There's a fear factor for them -- it is scary to see the accelerated pace that hockey has developed in the United States."

Although the kids spend only two seasons in Ann Arbor, their impact on American hockey spreads far beyond youth tournaments. Seven NDTP graduates were on the U.S. team that won a silver medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics, and there are nine currently playing in Sochi: goalie Jimmy Howard (Red Wings); defensemen Justin Faulk (Hurricanes), Cam Fowler (Ducks), Kevin Shattenkirk (Blues) and Ryan Suter (Wild); and forwards Patrick Kane (Blackhawks), Ryan Kesler (Canucks), Phil Kessel (Maple Leafs) and James van Riemsdyk (Maple Leafs).

Those currently in the program aren't getting to watch much of the Olympics. They're sleeping while the Games are taking place, getting ready for their dual lives as hockey players and full-time students at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. But they're keeping track of what's happening.

"Once you play with 'USA' on your chest, it means even more to watch the Olympic team," U-18 forward Dylan Larkin said. "That team is where every American hockey player wants to be."

The program has succeeded at so many levels -- almost every player goes on to a college career and more than 130 have ended up in the NHL -- that it's hard to believe how hard Jeff Jackson had to fight to create it. In 1996, Jackson, who made a name in hockey with two NCAA titles at Lake Superior State, was interviewing for a position as USA Hockey's national coach. When he returned for his second interview, he came with a plan that would change men's hockey in the United States.

Another great job by the Through These Doors crew.

UND Women's Hockey's impact on the Sochi Games

Yesterday, I sat down with UND Women's coach yesterday and he has some interesting things to say. Lets just say, the coach is excited for the stretch run when his Olympic players return from Sochi... Also very proud of his current and former players that are participating in the Olympics. This weekend, the UND women play the MSU-M Mavericks in their final home series at the Ralph this season.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – A reminder to University of North Dakota fans that Friday night’s men’s hockey game against Miami University will begin at 7:38 p.m. Central due to the CBS Sports Network broadcast of the game.

The game tickets for Friday night, which were printed prior to the 2013-14 television scheduled being released, incorrectly indicate a 7 p.m. start time.

Saturday’s game will begin at 7:07 p.m. Central.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Donn)

I would like to wish a Happy Valentine’s Day to every one of the Goon’s World Fans reading this weekend’s article.  With another full weekend of NCHC games will any team be showing any love for their opponent?  I don’t think so!

NCHC Games

Western Michigan @ Colorado College
Last weekend the Broncos swept the RedHawks (5-2, 3-2) in Oxford and the Tigers tied and lost to the Bulldogs (2-2SOL, 2-1L) in Duluth.

The Broncos have been hot in 2014 and the Tigers are not, need I say more?  Okay, I’ll add a little more, WMU schedule this year, 2014, has them already beating the RedHawks four times, so that helps.  The Broncos need another sweep this weekend, since their schedule gets tougher, UNO, DU, and UND to end the season.  Speaking of ending the season, I bet the Tigers wish this season was already behind them.  BRONCOS SWEEP

#13 Minnesota-Duluth @ #8 SCSU
Last weekend the Bulldogs swept the Tigers (2-2SOW, 2-1W) in Duluth and the Huskies split with the Pioneers (2-2SOL, 4-2W) in St. Cloud.

This is the series of the weekend, in my opinion, since it the battle for the top spot in the league.  If SCSU can sweep at the NHC, they will have good gap over the Bulldogs with three weeks to go.  And the Huskies have a schedule advantage down the stretch.  They play Miami, UND, and CC to end the season, and two of those teams are less than good.  The Bulldogs need to pull some points out of the Huskies if they want a shot at the first NCHC title.  Back in early December the Huskies swept the Bulldogs in Duluth; don’t see why they can’t do it again.  HUSKIES SWEEP

#23 Denver @ Nebraska-Omaha
Last weekend the Pioneers split with the Huskies (2-2SOW, 4-2L) in St. Cloud and the Mavericks split with NoDak (4-2L, 6-3W) in Grand Forks.

The Mavericks have split their last two series and appear to be heading in the right direction, late in the season.  The Pioneers have split their last few series too, and depending on how you want to figure they have been splitting everything the last two months.  Being only separated by a point in the standings and both teams are doing fine as of late, I don’t see a sweep in this series.  SPLIT

Miami @ #18 North Dakota
Last weekend the RedHawks were swept by the Broncos (5-2, 3-2) in Oxford and NoDak split with the Mavericks (4-2W, 6-3L) in Grand Forks.

NoDak has split its last two series with teams that are right next to them in the standings.  And now the struggling RedHawks come to Grand Forks this weekend.  NoDak needs points this weekend to keep its place in the standings.  Their schedule gets tough after this weekend, they go on the road to UMD and SCSU, and host WMU to end the season.  NODAK SWEEP

(video) 2014 Beanpot Highlights

The Boston College Eagles win the Beanpot yet again. The Eagles are smoking hot right now unbeaten in 15 games (14-0-1), that's the longest in the nation, that's their fifth Beanpot in a row. Also, the Eagles forward Johnny Gaudrea (25g-33a—50pts), is smoking hot right now, and in the last six games has scored (5g-6a—11pts).

How would you like to be a goaltender? The forward line of (1) Johnny Gaudreau (25g-33a—58pts) – (4) Bill Arnold (11g-31a—42pts) – (2) Kevin Hayes (21g-27a—48pts) is by far the best line in college hockey right now.
