Womens Hockey: USA beats Canada at the Ralph
Grand Forks ND – Tonight felt a reunion; twin sisters Jocelyn and Monique Lamoureux played their collegiate hockey at Ralph Engelstad Arena, which sits on the campus of the University of North Dakota.
Actually, it was like they never left.
Before the game, there was a presentation on the big screen honoring the twins and the time they spent at UND. It’s been an emotional week for the Lamoureux’s. Their brother Jacques Lamoureux is in the U.S. Air Force, and he’d just returned from Kuwait.
“Especially to have Jacques home, he just got home from Kuwait, that was really special,” Jocelyne Lamoureux said. “We’re a really close family. So, having him for that – my grandma and my parents – it was pretty cool. This place is home for Monique and I, this community means a lot to us. To share this with our family, was nice.”
Tonight, 5,559 fans came to watch the USA and Canada play in a pre-Olympic match-up. The environment in the arena was awesome, it was electric, at times the noise level was almost deafening.
“I was shocked by how loud the building was, really,” U.S. Women’s National Team head coach
Katey Stone said. “At one point it was going through me. I kept feeling like the thunder was going through me, too. What an environment for these kids to play in, leading up to Sochi.”
The teams traded goals in the first period, before team USA blew open the game in the second period scoring three goals. Team USA’s fore-check was relentless and Canada had no answer for it.
Pacing team USA, was the third line of Monique Lamoureux (1g-1a—2pts), Megan Duggan (0g-2a—2pts) and Jocelyne Lamoureux (1g-1a—2pts). That line was nothing short of amazing racking up a combined six points. The twins would also finish the game with the Gordy Howe hat-trick.
USA Team captain Megan Duggan was asked what it was like to be paired with the Lamoureux twins.
“They’re dynamic players,” Duggan said. “They make things happen. They’re smart with the puck, and I enjoy it.”
Five players from each team would be assessed five-minute majors for fighting, after a scrum broke out in front of the American net with nine seconds remaining in the game. Team USA’s head coach didn’t seem all that thrilled with the Canadian’s tactics at the end of the game.
“I am not a proponent of fighting in hockey,” Katey Stone said. “I am proponent of standing up for yourself. If players are going to take cheap shots at our players, there’s going to be answer for that. We will not get pushed around. At the end of the day, we’ll prepare to play any game that we have to play. We’ll go hard, we’ll go clean, if the game gets out of hand, we’ll manage that as well.”
This is what some of the players had to say about the scrum at the end of the game.
“That player (Brianne Jenner) that hit (Josephine) Pucci took her out for a season, two seasons ago,” Monique Lamoureux said. “She took a head shot at her, so were going to stick up for our teammates and were going to protect them. I think Jocelyn obviously body-checked her, but I think it was clean. If you’re going to take a head shot at one of our players there’s consequences for it. Look what happened to me in Burlington (Vermont).”
“You have to protect your own players and you have to protect your own house,” USA forward Brianna Decker said.
Team USA and Canada will play again in St. Paul, Minnesota on December 28, 2013 at the Xcel Energy Center.
USA outshot team Canada 31-18
Both teams were 0-3 on the power play.

Monique Lamoureux and Brianne Jenner Gifs
Monique Lamoureux smacks a Canadian player in the goalmouth... For every action there's a reaction. You can see that Brianne Jenner elbows USA’s Josephine Pucci. There's a history here.

New York Times: Top Prospects Decide if Path to N.H.L. Runs Through College
I think this article is worth a look. Personally, I have been on record, in the past, of letting
players that have played in the CHL, play in Division I college hockey. I don’t see why they can’t play college hockey. The money they get as a stipend is minuscule. There are others that feel this way as well. Of course this is not a popular
stance to have.
Paul Brownfield, New York Times -- Berenson said Nieves, at 6-3, 200 pounds, was still learning to use his size and speed to cut to the net. Now in his 30th season behind the Michigan bench, Berenson, 74, preaches patience and life after hockey. Compared with major junior hockey, the college game is faster and more intense, he said.
“This is a team that essentially stays together all year,” Berenson added. “They’re like a pro hockey league. They’re trading players and demoting players. We go to school full time. This is a whole different lifestyle.”
Berenson is opposed to changing the rules so that players can experience the O.H.L. at 16 and then play college at 18. Michigan is a special place, he said, requiring a certain kind of commitment.
Berenson lamented the factors that rush Michigan players to the pros, including N.H.L. teams that sign draft picks as underclassmen to avoid losing them to free agency. (Teams have until Aug. 15 after class graduation to sign draftees who have played four years of college hockey.)
Of the seven scholarship hockey players in Nieves’s freshman class a year ago, only four are still enrolled at Michigan. Defenseman Jacob Trouba jumped to the N.H.L.’s Winnipeg Jets. Forward Daniel Milne was unhappy with his lack of playing time and joined the O.H.L.’s Owen Sound Attack, a team that plays two hours from his hometown.
“They thanked me for everything,” Berenson said of his discussion with Milne’s parents. “And they said, ‘I guess we’re too impatient; we’re just going to move on and play in the O.’ ”

Brendan Shanahan sets a bad precedence for not suspending Tom Wilson
Brendan Shanahan explained why the NHL's Department of Player Safety will not suspend Tom Wilson for his hit to injure on Philadelphia Flyers forward Brayden Schenn. I totally disagree with this, but oh well. None of us should be shocked by this decision, Shanny gets them wrong about half of the time.

Anti-fighting Cabal to Ban Fighting in US Junior Hockey
| Shirt badge/Association crest (Photo credit: Wikipedia) |
Jeff Z. Klein, New York Times -- Junior A hockey, for 16- to 20-year-olds, is the last remaining level of the game under USA Hockey’s jurisdiction that still tolerates fighting. The push to outlaw fighting is being spurred by a recent spate of serious injuries resulting from fights and concern over the prospect of lawsuits.
“We need to take a firm stand to preserve our sport, prevent catastrophic injury and avoid financial repercussions,” said Dr. Michael J. Stuart, the chief medical officer for USA Hockey, who has been a leader in the effort to ban fighting.
The new rule would punish all fighters with automatic ejection from the game, and instigators with an automatic two-game suspension. It would also give referees more latitude in making decisions to eject players.
The measure will be presented at the organization’s winter meetings Jan. 16-19 in Orlando, Fla. It could be voted on then or at USA Hockey’s annual congress in June. The rule could take effect as early as next season.

(Video) Damien Brunner Great Goal vs Ottawa Senators
New Jersey Devils forward Damien Brunner scores a beautiful goal against the Ottawa Senators, but the refs should have called the play dead and called a penalty. I would have been upset if I was the coach of the Senators as well. This is a blown call in my opinion.

2014 WJC TV Schedule
This year you will again be able to watch the 2014 WJC on NHL Network... Also, there's some very good news as well. Dave Starman of CBSSN will be in the booth with Steve Mears, co-host of NHL Network’s NHL Live. The games will start the day after Christmas and continue till January 5, 2014. This season, no one from UND's hockey team is on the USA WJC team or the Canadian WJC team for that matter.
Tweets about the Tom Wilson Hit.... Hum Interesting
Tom Wilson's hit was called a "clean hit" by Oates and a "great hit" by McPhee. And yet he's gonna be suspended. This is why I hate Shanahan
— Ï„hατ fly yοung lαχα (@flyyounglaxa) December 18, 2013
Hate Shanny for doing his job. Wow! Brendan Shannahan has no choice but to suspend Tom Wilson, it's a brutal, dirty, illegal hit. If he doesn't suspend him, he loses all credibility in my opinion.
WSH's Tom Wilson has a noon ET hearing tomorrow with NHL for his hit last night on PHI's Brayden Schenn.
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) December 18, 2013
I would hardly doubt that Bob McKenzie would actually say something silly like that... Based on the hit, it was violent, and it was a predatory hit. Wilson takes about 6-8 strides and doesn't slow down, one bit. Absolutely blows Brayden Schenn up.
Bob Mckenzie is absolutely right... Nothing wrong with Tom Wilson's hit

(Video) Washington's Tom Wilson pounds Brayden Schenn into the boards
This is a blatant charging, and it's also a checking from behind penalty. If the NHL's Department of Player Safety doesn't suspend Tom Wilson for this dangerous hit on Brayden Schenn, they're derelict in their duties. There's no sense to these types of hits.
Someone is going to get killed on the ice and it's not going to be from a fight, it's going to be from a dangerous hit like this. Personally, I am more offended by these types of hockey plays than to goons dropping the gloves in a staged fight.

(Video) Robert Bortuzzo head shot on Jerry D'Amigo
Penguins Defenseman Robert Bortuzzo delivers a headshot on Maple Leafs forward Jerry D'Amigo. Bortuzzo was given a two-minute minor for an illegal check to the head. I think there's a chance that Bortuzzo could get a call from the NHL's department of Player Safety.
I also agree with the fans that say that the Pittsburgh Penguins don't have the moral high ground, either. Lastly, Is this the same kind of hit that Deryk Engelland put on Justin Abdelkader? I don't know? Thoughts?
In looking at Bortuzzo/D'Amigo, we see unavoidable head contact on an otherwise full body hit. Will not be pursuing supplemental discipline.
— NHL Player Safety (@NHLPlayerSafety) December 17, 2013
I don't believe Bortuzzo has a past history with supplemental discipline.

Shawn Thornton to appeal 15-game suspension
Shawn Thornton's agent Anton Thun confirms his client will appeal his 15-game suspension
— Pierre LeBrun (@Real_ESPNLeBrun) December 16, 2013
Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton is going to appeal his 15-game suspension. I can't imagine an independent arbitrator ruling in his favor, but we will soon find out.
So Shawn Thornton is appealing his 15-game suspension. First appeal is to Bettman, who will provide written judgment.
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) December 16, 2013
If, after receiving Bettman's judgment and narrative, Thornton wants to appeal that, he can go to independent arbitrator.
