Mining Gazette: Scheduling still a struggle for Wildcats in new college hockey landscape

Here’s an interesting article that I found in the Mining Journal. Personally, I really enjoyed the Non-conference matchup between the two teams. Historically, there were some good matchups between the two teams, when they played in the same conference.
Matt Wellens, Mining Gazette, Les Wong was NMU's president at the time and having previously been employed as a vice president at Valley City State University in North Dakota, Wong was interested in the Wildcats playing the team then known as the Fighting Sioux, so Kyle set up the deal.

"We've always wanted to play the bulk of our nonconference against the old WCHA schools because our fans would like that," Kyle said. "I think it's great when we get a chance to do that.

"(UND) is a great opponent. They are always perennially good year in and year out. It's a great environment every year."

Kyle hopes this weekend's one-way trip to North Dakota will spark a scheduling relationship that eventually leads to UND playing a series in Marquette. The two schools haven't played each other anywhere since NMU originally left the WCHA after the 1996-97 season.

But Kyle wants to avoid two-for-one deals that would involve, for example, two series played in Grand Forks and one in Marquette over three seasons.
Obviously, the coaching staff has to do what’s best for the team, and make their schedule based on what they think is best for the team in the long run. With the NCHC having eight-teams, there’s an opportunity for them to play a lot of non-conference matchups.... But I would love to see UND play the Northern Michigan Wildcats in the future going forward. NMU plays a brand of hockey that’s fun to watch.

(Video) Milan Lucic Fights outside Vancouver Club

This happened after the Boston Bruins lost to the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 on Saturday night. From the Sporting News.
After his Bruins lost to the Canucks in Vancouver on Saturday night, video surfaced of an angry Milan Lucic cursing outside a Vancouver nightclub following an apparent altercation.

No punches are thrown in the video, and Lucic was not the aggressor, but he did say he'd been hit twice and was upset that an officer suggested that he leave.

UND Hockey: At look at the numbers

Here's a look at some of the numbers halfway through the college hockey season. The first table is the Strength of Schedule.  As you can see, UND has played the 10th toughest schedule to date. New Hampshire has played the toughest. Also, UND has won five-games in a row and has worked its way back into consideration for an at large bid NCAA tourney bid. Of course the tourney isn't for about 3 1/2 months you can see that UND is in good position. If UND can sweep Bemidji they will have a 4-2-2 Non-Conference record.

Boston Bruins pest Brad Marchand kisses ring finger

Apparently, Brad Marchand kissed his ring finger that his Stanley Cup Ring sits on and the Boston Bruins hating fans went nuts.

As most Boston Bruins fans know, there's a whole group of NHL fans that hate the Boston Bruins and go nuts no matter what the Boston Bruins do. It's the same thing being a member of the UND fan base as well. I heard about this little incident last night, as I was going home from the Engelstad Arena, after the game last night. I kind of figured some would be getting all spun up about this today.

Third period comeback propels North Dakota past Northern Michigan

Grand Forks, ND – Coming into tonight’s game, the University of North Dakota Hockey team had a 0-5-0 record when the opponent is leading after two periods of play. Make that 1-5-0, with the comeback 3-1 win.
One of themes this season has been the lack of discipline and taking untimely penalties.
Tonight, through two periods of play, the UND hockey team took too many undisciplined penalties. Fortunately for UND, Northern Michigan was able to only able to go one-for-four on the man advantage and the UND defense was able to limit the Wildcats to 14 shots on net.  After the first period, UND game the Wildcats nothing.
Tonight’s game was a good ole fashioned hard fought hockey game, and through 50:35 of hockey the Northern Michigan Wildcats held a 1-0 lead. UND would bear down and play disciplined hockey in the third period.
Finally, at the 10:35 mark of the third period, freshman defenseman Gage Ausmus gave the hometown crowd something to cheer about as he picked up the equalizer off a great pass from Michael Parks.
Gage Ausmus described the game tying goal, “I saw Parks coming down the wall and all five of their guys followed him, and I saw an opening on the back side. Parksy got it to me and I beared down and got the goal.”
Game on!
At the 14:12 mark of the third period, Rocco Grimaldi and Drake Caggiula would bring the crowd to their feet with a beautiful give-and-go goal and that was all UND would need.
Derek Rodwell would ice the game at the 19:25 mark of the third period with an empty-net goal.
“A real tight – hard fought game,” head coach Dave Hakstol said. “I thought the first ten-minutes was kind of like a jump ball. Nobody really wanted to take control of it. We weren’t sharp on the five-minute power play that put us back on our heels. And from there, it was little bit of a street fight through the rest of the game. That’s the best way I could describe it.”
UND also ends the first half on a positive note, with its first series sweep on home ice since January 4-5, 2013. UND (9-7-2, 5-5-0 NCHC) also ends the first half of the season on a five-game winning streak, and has now won back-to-back series. Since November 11, 2013, UND has a 7-3-1 record.
Do you sense where this is going?
“Personally that was my first time (stick salute),” Rocco Grimaldi said. “I wasn’t here for the one last year. I was overseas. It’s exciting feeling, especially our first this year. Obviously, we had kind of a rough start to the year. The last five games we put together a good streak. A couple of sweeps in a row, I think we’re heading in the right direction. So, it’s great for our team.“
UND is off until January 3-4, 2014, when they travel to travel to Burnaby, British Columbia to play in the Great West Showcase. UND will return to conference play on January 10-11, 2014, when they entertain Colorado college at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Stats of Interest

UND goalie Zane Gothberg has a 1.60 GAA and a .938 save percentage during UND’s 5-game winning streak.
Northern Michigan’s 14 shots on goal were the fewest allowed by UND since giving up 14 in a 5-2 win at Bemidji State on Oct. 15, 2010.
Rocco Grimaldi has a five-game scoring streak and has scored  (2g-4a—6pts) during that time.
With the loss, Northern Michigan dropped to 6-10-2.

Vancouver Canucks: Zach Kassian no-class....

I would say that Zach Kassian is taunting an opponent. A bush league move in my opinion. Here's what Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy has to say on the matter.
Gagner faced the Canucks for the first time this season on Friday night. At one point, the teams were involved in a scrum that included his former oral surgeon Kassian.

Because hockey is a nasty, twisted psychological war in which nearly every topic can be weaponized for agitation, Kassian looked over at Gagner went … there.
Kassian is pretty much a meat head, a player that I would classify as a rat. Said "Rat" averages 11.16 minutes a game and has scored (17g-11a—28pts) in 111 NHL games. When one of your team mates punch him in his big mouth, he wins. In this case, this clown deserves it. I think hockey is starting to gain a punk mentality like the other major sports.

In this case, I think he performed with in his niche is to be an agitator, to do bush league moves like this. This season, said Rat has been already suspended five-games for breaking the jaw of Oilers forward Sam Gagner. That's why he was wearing the shield protecting his jaw.

This is one of the reasons I don't want to ever want see fighting taken out of the NHL. This clown needs to be looking over his shoulder. If fighting is removed or curtailed from the NHL, the "Rats" like this clown will flourish. Imagine if there's no fighting in the NHL? These types of incidents will lead to further random acts of violence. Eventually, someone will chop him head first into boards and he will probably end up being carried off of the ice on a stretcher.

Toronto's Clarkson to have hearing for hit on Sobotka

The Department of Player Safety might not be the Christmas spirit when it talks to Toronto's David Clarkson. The Maple Leafs forward has already been suspended this season and could be looking at another lengthy one.
NHL.COM -- Toronto Maple Leafs right wing David Clarkson will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Saturday morning for a hit on St. Louis Blues left wing Vladimir Sobotka in a game Thursday night at Scottrade Center.

At 6:28 of the second period, Clarkson was assessed a two-minute minor for an illegal check to the head of Sobotka, who remained in the game.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: illegal check to the head. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

St. Louis won the game, 6-3.

North Dakota beats Northern Michigan 4-1

English: Ralph Engelstadt Arena at the Univers...
Grand Forks, ND – Historically, the University of North Dakota hockey team is known for being a second half team. After losing three games in a row, to start the month of November, the UND hockey team has gotten back on track and has gone 5-3-1, since the 3-game losing streak.
With the win tonight, UND has gone 6-3-1 in the last 10 games.
UND would get on the board first at the 04:10 mark of the first period with a goal from forward Mark McMillian. Picking up assists on UND’s first goal were defensemen Troy Stecher and Nick Mattson.
UND would outshoot Northern Michigan 10-5 in the opening period.
North Dakota would break open the game with two power play goals in the second period. UND forward Luke Johnson would score a power play goal at the 09:57 mark of the second period, giving UND a 2-0 lead. Drawing assists on Johnson’s power play goal, forward Rocco Grimaldi and defenseman Jordan Schmaltz.
“I just tried to get it on net,” Luke Johnson said. “I was just lucky that it went in”
UND would strike again, to stretch the lead to 3-0 at the 16:23 mark of the second period. This time, it was a power play goal from the caption Dillon Simpson.  Picking up assists were Rocco Grimaldi and Jordan Schmaltz, again.
Northern Michigan would outshoot UND 11-8 in the second period and trailed 3-0.
“I thought we had a good start,” freshman defenseman Paul LaDue said. “Second period got a little shaky at times. We buried our chances and we have to come out tomorrow with that same mentality.”
Northern Michigan would break the Zane Gothberg’s shutout bid at the 07:40 mark of the third period with a wraparound goal from Daren Nowick.
Northern Michigan appeared to have scored their second goal, on the power play, but the on-ice officials ruled that a Northern Michigan player visually impaired the goaltenders view in the crease. In essence, college hockey has the “Avery Rule” as well.
According to head coach Dave Hakstol, “(Player’s) foot was in the crease, taking away his vision. If he had been on the side of the crease and not in the goaltenders vision it would have been a good goal.”
UND would push the lead to 4-1 with a goal from by Paul LaDue. Assisting on the goal was forward Connor Gaarder. With the win, UND pushed its current winning streak to four games.
“I thought we got off to a good start,” head coach Dave Hakstol said. “We had a good first period. We had our ups and downs. I thought we played a pretty good hockey game.”
UND will go for the series sweep against Northern Michigan at 7:07 p.m. Central at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

You have to wonder if there will be a call from the NHL's Department of Player Safety? Personally, I don't think it's worthy of a suspension. But the video is not very good either.

EDIT: After watching this video, Emelin clearly caught Downie with a chicken wing elbow. This the kind of hits that the NHL is looking to eliminate from the game of hockey. Emelin might be getting a game or two for that hit.
