Paul LaDue: 2012-13 USHL Defenseman of the Year (Video)

Researching an article that I am working on, found this video of incoming UND freshman defenseman Paul LaDue. This should give you an idea of what kind of player UND is getting.

Adding up the College Hockey Oudoor Hockey Games

Let’s take a look at the college hockey outdoor games that we have on tap for the 2013-14 college hockey season. If I have missed one, let me know. There are currently (by my count) 23 outdoor hockey games between the NHL, AHL, CHL and NCAA.

Big Ten Hockey: To use Point System like NCHC

Brad Elliot Schlossman from the Grand Forks Herald, is reporting that the Big Ten Hockey conference will use a point system like the one that the NCHC announced a few weeks ago.

This past May, it was announced that the Big Ten will also use the shootout.

Never Forget 9/11

Today, is the 12th anniversary of the horrific 9/11 Terrorist attacks. Most of us, can probably remember what we were doing when the two planes hit the World Trade Center Towers... I was on my way to work listening to KFAN 1440 A.M. and Tim and Swig were talking about an airplane that hit the World Trade Center in New York City.

Unfortunately that day changed most of our lives forever. If you get a chance today, take a minute from your busy day to remember the victims that perished in that horrific terrorist attack, 12-years ago.

One of the memories that I can still remember was the messages on the CNN, there was a scroll at the bottom of the TV screen, and there were messages from people looking for family members that were missing after the WTC collapsed. Lastly, let’s also not forget the Men and Women in our countries' military that serve this great nation, but also the Men and Woman that gave their lives protecting freedom.

Lest we NEVER forget or history WILL repeat itself.

Corban Knight and His 2013 Calgary Flames Prospect Camp

It sounds like former UND forward Corban Knight had what some would classify as a rough prospects camp with the Calgary Flames. Here's a couple of quotes that I found from a couple of different articles.
Ryan Pike, The Hockey Writers --- Up front, highly-touted prospects Corban Knight and Sven Baertschi arguably disappointed – in that they failed to stand out from the pack during the week. Rather than distinguish themselves as head-and-shoulders above the rest, these contenders for NHL jobs are now joined by Markus Granlund, Michael Ferland, Max Reinhart and perhaps even former Red Deer Rebels captain Turner Elson in the hunt.
While the Flames GM Jay Feaster wasn't very complementry about some of his prospects play during the Flames prospect Camp. Flames coach Troy Ward was even a little more pointed in his criticisms towards some of his players. Here's what the Flames coach Troy Ward had to say about Corban Knight's play, during the Flames prospect camp, that was held in Penticton, B.C.. Yikes!
Scott CRruickshank, CALGARY HERALD --- Monday, 7 p.m. at the WinSport Ice Complex, the Flames play their fourth game in five nights, taking on the University of Calgary Dinos.

Which, apparently, would be an ideal time for Corban Knight to pick it up.

Asked about the play of Knight, Ward didn’t sugar-coat things.

Yes, the centre had scored Sunday — as did Granlund — but the coach demands more.

“To be honest, he’s got to play with some passion, some vigour,” said Ward. “This isn’t college — you’re not going to have the puck all the time. You’re going to have to go get it back. When Corban has the puck, I’m fine with that. But when he doesn’t have it, he’s going to have to play like Ferland . . . and get his nose dirty.” Knight is getting his first taste of pro after four seasons at the University of North Dakota.

Craig Custance: NHL overtime rules be changed

Detroit Red Wings won 62 games in a single sea...
I know that hockey purists don't like to see hockey games decided by the shootout. I also know that fans are split on the shootout. When the NCHC announced that they were going to settle games by the shootout, many fans chimed in to tell me their disgust and how they hate the shootout. This could be a proposal that might be well received.
Craig Custance, ESPN - Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland isn't anti-shootout. He's just in favor of letting actual hockey decide games.

So during NHL GM meetings in the past, he's suggested that overtime sessions consist of five (or four) minutes of 4-on-4, then five (or four) minutes of 3-on-3. If the game is still tied, then a shootout would determine the winner.

There was some support in the past, just not enough.

In the prospect tournament he runs in Traverse City, Michigan, Holland implemented his version of overtime. On Sunday, he and other general managers in the building got to see what it looked like in actual game action for the first time when the Dallas Stars' prospects beat those from the Minnesota Wild in a shootout that followed the first 3-on-3 overtime session of the tournament.
What do you think of this idea? Would you be in favor of these O.T. rules to settle ties? Would you be in favor of college hockey using these rules to break ties as well?

NHL Hockey: League clarifies illegal check to head rule

Original NHL logo, used until 2005. A version of the logo features it in the shape of a hockey puck. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
According to the Elliotte Friedman of CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, the NHL has changed their wording of Rule 48. It's nice to see the rule get clarified and cleaned up a bit.
Now Rule 48.1 declares an illegal check to the head as "a hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable."

You're going to ask the obvious follow-up. How do you determine if the hit is avoidable? There are three circumstances to be considered:

First, whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the opponent's body and the head was not "picked" as a result of poor timing, poor angle of approach or unnecessary extension of the body upward or outward.

Second, whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position by assuming a posture that made head contact on an otherwise full body check unavoidable.

Third, whether the opponent materially changed the position of his body or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way that significantly contributed to the head contact.

Obviously, we need game action to see how this change affects things. But in theory, it makes a lot of sense. By eliminating "targeted" and adding "avoidable," it puts added onus on the hitter to avoid recklessness. Ultimately, that's what you want.

Andrew MacWilliam Impressing Toronto Maples Leafs at Rookie Tournament

Former Fighting Sioux defenseman Andrew MacWilliam is making an impression on the Toronto Maples Leafs. It also sounds like he has been throwing some punishing checks as well. The Toronto Maple Leafs wrapped up their rookie tournament last night with a 6-2 loss. The Leafs finished the tournament with 2-1 record.

Big Mac

If you want to make Spott smile, just mention the name Andrew MacWilliam.

"Oh boy, he's big, strong and powerful," the Marlies coach said. "He's going to be one of our alternate captains and he's a guy who is full of character. He's probably going to catch somebody early with their head down in this tournament.

"He's just a big, strong man that has an edge. He's going to relish the physicality. I don't think a lot of people know him so he's going to open some eyes here this week."

MacWilliam was a physical force in Toronto's game against Chicago rookies Thursday night. He lambasted Chicago's Chris DeSousa late in the second period with the hardest check of the game. DeSousa left the contest.

MacWilliam, 23, scored two goals and 13 points in 41 games with North Dakota last season to go with a team-high 116 penalty minutes. It is his penalty total - 327 minutes in four seasons - that is the best indicator of what to expect from the six-foot-two, 230-pound Calgary, Alta., native.

In the previous two seasons with the Camrose Kodiaks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, MacWilliam totalled 350 PIM in 111 games. You get the picture

Adrian Peterson takes it 78-yards for the Touch Down

I would say that this was a "good way" for the Minnesota Viking to start their season. This is the Vikings first play from scrimmage, a 78-yard touchdown run for All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson.

Peterson would be shut down the rest of the way as he would rush 17 more time and only gain 15 yards. The Detroit Lions were relentless and shut down the running game for the Minnesota Vikings the rest of the way.

SDSU's Zack Zenner takes it 46-yards to the house

In my opinion, this was the difference in the football game between SDSU and UND. UND would go on to lose the game 35-28, as a late rally would fall short. All in all, it was an impressive day for All-American Running Back Zach Zenner. On this play in question, Zenner was untouched as he scampered 46 yards to the end zone.

 Zenner Line

Here's the line on Zenner 37 rushing attempts for 296 yards. Zenner only had one rush for a loss. Zenner also tied the schools record for 295 yards rushing in a game, scoring three touchdown… Zenner’s longest run was for 46.

UMN Hockey: Lou Nanne wants to make a name for himself

British Columbia Hockey League
British Columbia Hockey League (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
This was a story that of broke on twitter tonight. I was at the football game when these tweets hit twitter. Sounds like University of Minnesota Golden Gopher hockey recruit is wanting to make a name for himself and doesn't want live in the shadows of his Grand Father former Minnesota North Stars great Lou Nanne. Personally, I see nothing wrong with that, and more power to him.

According to Jason Gonzalez, beat writer for the Star and Tribune who covers the Minnesota Gophers; Nanne has decommited from the University of Minnesota and will again explore  and ponder his options on where he will play his college hockey.

UND Hockey Jersey's for 2013-14

Here's the new UND Hockey Jersey's via the NCHC twitter account. Thoughts? Based on some of the responses I have seen, I maybe in the minority, but I like these jerseys. I did confirme with the UND Hockey team, that there’s no difference in this season’s jersey from last year.

Dave St. Peter: Renew the UND-NDSU football rivalry

If you haven’t seen this newspaper article it’s worth a look. I agree with what Mr. St. Peter is saying. I think it’s time to renew the rivalry, and he’s right, all of our other teams are already playing each other and they have been for a couple of years now. Looking backwards, Roger Thomas made a huge mistake by not playing NDSU during their transition. It’s time that both schools make this happen.
Dave St. Peter, Grand Forks Herald – As a UND alum and avid follower of all UND athletics, I’ve never been easily impressed by anything NDSU-related. But as a native of the great state of North Dakota, I couldn’t be more proud of what the NDSU football program has accomplished.

Congratulations to Coach Craig Bohl, the balance of the coaching and training staff and all of the players on their well-deserved victory. Best of luck throughout the 2013 football season.

Speaking of my boys, Friday night’s game sparked an interesting discussion within the St. Peter household. That dialogue focused on why NDSU and UND no longer play each other in football.

I shared many stories from my time in Grand Forks detailing personal experiences with the NDSU-UND rivalry — many of which were painful losses both at Dacotah Field and Memorial Stadium at the hands of Bison greats Jeff Bentrim, Tyrone Braxton, Chad Stark, Tony Satter and others.

Each story included the buildup, the pageantry and the legends that accompany one of America’s longest-standing college football rivalries.

In my professional career, I’ve been lucky enough to experience so many wonderful sporting events. Moreover, I’ve seen firsthand how those events have brought communities together — perhaps like nothing else can.
Oh yeah! To our friends to south that say that they would rather watch NDSU vs. Ferris State are delusional. No matter how you spin it, the game against FSU is probably at best a high intensity practice, and let’s not kid ourselves; the Bison would get a better look from their scout team than they will from the Division II version of Ferris State. .
