Minnesota Wild: The Hits Keep Coming
This is not good news for the Minnesota Wild. Mikko Koiuv and Josh Harding were placed on the injured reserve list. With forward Zach Parise out, the Wild are even more offensively challenged. If my math is right, that's tree players out with foot injuries as well (Koiuv, Spurgeon and Parise). The loss of Harding is huge as well. He is 18-7-3 with a 1.65 goals-against average, a .933 save percentage
Chad Graff, Pioneer Press -- The Wild placed captain Mikko Koivu and goalie Josh Harding on injured reserve Monday.With a offensively challenged line-up and with the current injuries, the Wild are going to have to have someone step up and chip in offensively.
That means each will sit out at least seven days.
Koivu was injured Saturday night when he apparently blocked a shot with his ankle. The Wild did not announce a time frame for Koivu's return, but an update is expected Monday afternoon after the team practices in Los Angeles.
Harding was termed "ill" in the days leading to Monday. He had been placed on IR last month to adjust to treatment changes for multiple sclerosis. The changes were termed "minor" by Harding and the team, but he only appeared in two games after being activated in late December.

It would appear that leaving Bobby Ryan off of the Olympic hockey team might be a huge mistake.
Minnesota Wild: Ryan Suter scores a Hat-Trick to help Wild beat Caps 5-3.
Wild defenseman Ryan Suter became the first Minnesota Wild defenseman in their team's history to score a hat-trick. That was also the first hat-trick of Suter's NHL career. The Wild scored five goals on 11 shots. That's not a misprint or a typo. The Wild have now won two-games in a row.

Then there were two... Sweden vs. Finland
We're down to two teams... Sweden and Finland will play for the Gold Medal in the World Juniors Hockey Championship. I have to admit, that I am not going to feel all that sad for our neighbors to the north.
Why am I not cheering for Canada anymore? I just can't forget how their fans cheer against the USA when they're playing in International competition. Especially after their fans starting cheering for team Russia during the 2006 World Junior Hockey Championship. After that, I pretty much decided that I will cheer for the Swedes or whoever, plays Canada in hockey. Now lets be clear, I am not anti-Canadian at all. I am just not going to cheer for them in the World Junior Hockey Championship or Olympics hockey anymore.
Also, some of the clueless comments that were posted at one of my videos, that I uploaded to Youtube, only reinforce the reason why. This is what some clown put on one of the videos that I had uploaded. I wonder where Bob Scott is today? I wonder if he's crying in his beer and if he's going to cheer for the Finns or the Swedes?
Bob Scott said, "Congrats to Russia for eliminating the United States Junior Hockey Club... The USA show their classless colors yet again! Good riddance USA! No wonder the rest of the world despises you! NO CLASS!!! World Junior Hockey Tournament 2014."Mind you, this is the same country that if Canada was attacked, the USA would be there to defend her.
It's pretty evident that the Swedes are the class of the 2014 World Junior Hockey Championship. Thank God, the Swedes beat the Russians in the other semi-final game today as well. If the USA can't win the WJHC I am cool with the Swedes or Finns winning it all.

Blue Jackets forward Derek MacKenzie has been suspended 3-games by the NHL's Department of Player Safety for this hit on the Phoenix Coyotes Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

UND Hockey: Is there an outdoor game on the horizon?
This tweet hit Twitter yesterday. It's a great idea. It would be fun to have an outdoor hockey game between UND and UMN. Honestly, outdoor games are for the most part a nice spectacle, to be enjoyed by hockey fans. The Winter Classic was a decent game to watch yesterday.
Some fans think they’re a gimmick. I am on the fence with these things. Seriously, how many of these things are we going to have? I think this year we have hit the over saturation point. What do we have, like 20+ outdoor games this year? At last count, there were something like 23 of them. I might have missed a couple.

WJHC: Fly-by ends poorly for Russia's Pavel Buchnevich
This is the very reason that I would like the see the fly-by the benches curtailed. There was no reason for the Russian forward Pavel Buchnevich to skate by the American bench taunting the USA players like that. Obviously, Buchnevich would get his just deserts with the stick to upper body. Karma, maybe... I took a little bit of heat for the aricle, I also had some youth hockey coaches that were in agreement with me as well. This was the kind of stuff that I was talking about. I didn't get it in the video but Dave Starman said, "Act like you've been there before."

Yeah in Review 2013
Personally, I think that 2013 was a crummy year, however, it was a very good year for sports. There's been some really nice stories. When it looked like the Boston Bruins were going back to Chicago for game seven, but it wasn't meant to be, as the Blackhawks scored two goals in 17-seconds to win the Stanley Cup over the Boston Bruins.
The last team in the NCAA tourney, wins the NCAA tourney by going through a bunch of one and two seeded teams. Also, Yale becomes the first Ivy League school as well as the first ECAC team since 1989 to win the NCAA title. With the NCAA title win, the ECAC sheds the EZAC label.
The Minnesota Wild sign the big-time free agents Ryan Suter and Zach Parise in the summer of 2012 and the Minnesota make the Stanley Cup for the first time since the 2006-07 season. However, the Wild playoff drive is short lived as they are quickly dispatched in five games (4-1) by the eventual Stanley Cup champion the Chicago Blackhawks.
After much discussion, hand wringing and teeth gnashing, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference begins play in Oxford, Ohio as North Dakota and Miami play in the first ever game. North Dakota would go on to win game one by a score of 4-2.
The Toronto Maple Leafs looked like they were headed to the second-round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Leafs had what looked like a comfortable 4-1 lead. Then the roof fell in on the Maple Leafs during the third period. The Bruins would move on to face the New York Rangers in the second round of the playoffs.
Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand, aka the Little Ball of Hate, would get things rolling in round two of the Stanley Cup Playoffs as the Boston Bruins would win in overtime.
Like I mentioned earlier, personally, for me, 2013 has been one of those years that I will soon hopefully forget, but there's been some great sports stories. Happy New Year and see you next year.

Sid Crosby: Impressive Numbers.
Like him or hate him, Penguins Star Sidney Crosby is an elite hockey player, that has put up some crazy numbers in his short hockey career. Think about this, (25g-461a—720pts) in 520 games evens out to 1.41 PPG for the All-Star forward. Imagine if he hadn't suffered all of those concussions? If my math is right, Crosby missed over 100-games due to post concussion syndrome issues. Also, he missed about 20-games due to a ankle injury during the 2008 hockey season.
Colorado Avalanche: Don't go in Semyon Varlamov crease
We had an old saying in football, don't go in the kitchen, if you don't want to get hit. Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov was none too pleased with Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien after put his glove in the face of the Av's goalie. It could get ugly next time the two teams play. The two teams play a couple more times in March.

NCHCSo, we are to believe that the National Collegiate Hockey Conference was built on entitlement, I find that statement interesting. So, only the Big Ten Hockey Conference was allowed to forward their interests. All others had to stand fast. Actually, if anything, the re-alignment allowed a team (UAH) to find a conference and this will allow for future expansion. I am not convinced that we're done moving teams around, just yet.
Colorado College: This would have to be one hell of a “second-half surge.”
Denver: Yeah, 5-3 sounds just about right for a Denver win at UMass. I very much buy that as a reasonable result.
Miami: Riley Barber as captain of the US World Junior team seems like a no-brainer. One of the few returners, and he's very, very good. Given the amount of ice time he's been eating up for the RedHawks this year, he might never come off the ice in Sweden.
Minnesota-Duluth: The reason Justin Crandall isn't a goalie, and instead is the best forward on UMD this season, is that after his brother Aaron and his dad Jeff both played that position, his mom said he couldn't.
Nebraska-Omaha: I guess that yes, it is fair to say Jake Guentzel and Josh Arbcibald have been "key contributors" for the Mavs this season, given that the latter is a point-a-game player and the former is third on the team in assists as a freshman.
North Dakota: Oh a kid from Grand Forks committed to UND? Seems like that was a slam dunk. They've only been recruiting him his whole life.
St. Cloud: The St. Cloud Times gives the Huskies an “A” for the first half, which they say is “grading on a curve.” No need for a curve, they're just one of the best teams in the country.
Western Michigan: Lawson Arena got a scoreboard upgrade over the summer because NCHC rules mandated it, but apparently any talk about a new arena any time soon is just wishful thinking. “Lawson looks very nice,” said WMU athletic director Kathy Beauregard, stretching things a little.
This seems not to have stopped the NCHC from trying to make itself more impressive, which is apparently the kind of thing we should have come to expect from a league built on entitlement more than anything else. When the Big Ten was announced, all the “prestige” programs, or whatever you want to call them, that were being left behind in the CCHA and WCHA simply decided that they couldn't be bothered slumming it against these other, lesser programs which were beneath their status and probably contempt, and thus was born the “National” Collegiate Hockey Conference, which is a curious name considering that on a geographical basis it ignores all the parts of the nation not between Ohio and Colorado.
That there was a fan vote to name the finals of the conference tournament is all good and well, and settling on the Frozen Faceoff (perhaps by design not more than a little evocative of “Frozen Four”) earlier this month, which beat out the NCHC Championship, is a little icky but not in the end that big of a deal.

UND Hockey: If the season ended today, and it doesn't end today... But....
As I have said before, there's a lot of college hockey season left and when some were panicking, I wasn't. If season ended today and it doesn't, UND would make the NCAA tourney. With the five-game win streak, the 4-2-2 non-conference things look "okay" for UND. Now, I am not going to make any bracketology blog posts or anything like that, but I am just putting things into perspective.
WMU's Josh Pitt goes Coast To Coast Goal vs Michigan
Sweet goal by Western Michigan forward Josh Pitt, as he goes coast-to-coast against the Michigan Wolverines. That was also the game-winning goal in overtime, to vault WMU a 3-2 win. WMU will face MTU in tomorrow's championship game of the Great Lakes Invitational. That's goal number seven on the year for Pitt.

Minnesota Wild: Parise might have to miss some time
The hits keep coming for the Minnesota Wild. Wild. Forward Zach Parise is injured and will need to rest his injured foot. Going into the break, the Wild were 4-6-0 in their last 10 games. The Wild are also starving for offense and secondary scoring and have scored a measly 22 goals in the last 15 games. That's not going to win a lot of hockey games in any league.
Michael Russo, Rsso's Rants -- For a team that lacks confidence and has 22 goals in the past 15 games and must dig deep and figure out a way to stop the bleeding and climb back into the top-8, Parise's absence comes out a bad time.
Parise blocked a shot by Alex Steen on Nov. 25. Coincidentally - or maybe not, the Wild is 5-9-1 since and 1-7-1, including that game in St. Louis, on the road since.
Parise was supposed to miss two to three weeks because of the bum foot but instead missed one game because he felt he could play through the injury and because of how difficult a stretch of games the Wild had coming up.
Commendable, but Parise was clearly playing through pain and the last week to 10 days, his off-ice limp was getting more and more pronounced. You could see it on the ice, too.
My educated guess is Parise will now need to stay off the foot for a little while so it doesn't linger any longer. How long? No clue, but this time doctors may have more say than Parise.

USA WJC Hockey: Kerdiles checked from behind Sulak
USA forward Nic Kerdiles checked from behind by Czech Republic Defenseman Libor Sulak during game one of the 2014 IIHF WJC. There was no call on the play. After watching the video of the hit a few times, I am not really upset with the no-call in this instance.
