Making the case for Corban Knight for Hobey Baker

Eric Classen / UND Athletics
If you’re a fan of college hockey, you will know that nominations for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award went out this week. You can find the initial list of names on the Hobeybakeraward.com website.

Like any other college hockey fan, I went to the Hobey Baker site to see the names that were listed in the fan voting. Perusing the names, I found a familiar name of a player that I have had the privilege of covering on a weekly basis, over the last year and a half; Corban Knight, Senior, Forward, North Dakota.
As I said in another article, I believe that Knight is a complete player, both on and off of the ice, and there is no reason why he shouldn’t be one of the Hobey Hat Trick (finalists) when it’s all said and done.
I stand by those comments. I am not the only one that is saying these things either.
Knight is an assistant captain for the University of North Dakota and he is a well-liked and respected on and off the ice, by his teammates and the coaching staff.  To a “T” when you ask his teammates – what they think about think him – they all give the same answers.

Recently Carter Rowney had to say about his fellow assistant caption.
“He’s a good guy,” Rowney said.  “He lives in the same building as me and everything. Great team player, everyone gets along with him – easy to get along with. Always positive, no matter what’s going on. He’s never down on himself, never down on anyone else, just a positive guy.”
Fellow senior, UND defenseman and Captain Andrew MacWilliams had this to say about Knight being nominated for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.
“That’s awesome,” MacWIlliam said.  “I mean he’s [Knight] a hell of a player and he’s a great guy.  I didn’t really know till yesterday, late yesterday. So, that was good to see. I mean, he’s had a great start to the season, I hope that he can keep that up.”
Corban Knight had this to say about him being nominated for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.
“It’s an honor just to be mentioned in the running for that,” Knight said. “But I mean, I don’t know personally, I don’t think I should be up for that. I think there are a couple of other guys a little more deserving than I am. But, like I said, it’s an honor to be up for it, but it’s a long way off, so I try not to get caught up in it too much.”

Corban Knight scores a goal during a recent game… Peter Bottini, UND Athletics
Knight was asked if the media is media blowing his hot streak and the Hobey nomination out of proportion.
“I have been saying it all along,” Knight said.  “I think that you guys are blowing everything out of proportion.  Like myself. But, I mean, I think the credit goes to our whole team as a whole. I think the last month and half, everybody on our team, all the way through has been playing exceptionally well. Like I said before, I think that I have been on the receiving end of a lot great plays by my line mates and by the rest of the team and I have been making some plays. My line mates have been burying a lot of really nice plays. So, I think it’s over blown, but that’s just my personal opinion.”
If you have been around Corban Knight for any amount of time, you will figure out that he seldom takes any credit for his accomplishments. Knight is the ultimate teammate and he’s very quick to give credit to his teammates for his personal success. UND head coach Dave Hakstol agrees.
“Corban’s a humble person,” Hakstol said.  “That’s one of the great qualities, that’s what makes him a great leader, such a presence in our looker room.”

Knight also does many good things off the ice as well. Recently, this is what the head coach Dave Hakstol had to say about his senior forward’s off ice activities.
“What you see is what you get,” Hakstol said. “He’s a great young man, always got a positive perspective. He always pays attention to how he treats people around him. He’s very cognizant of that. He’s always being a leader – not just in our locker room but in the community. He does an awful lot of things in the community that go unnoticed. He doesn’t do it with any fanfare – but he’s always willing to help out.”
While Corban Knight is a pretty solid guy off the ice, he’s one of the top players in the NCAA on the ice as well. Currently, Corban Knight is sitting third nationally in points per game as well as over-all points. During his career, UND is 34-2-2 when he scores a goal. Knight has eight multiple point this season and has scored two or more points in five straight games in a row.
Lastly, Corban Knight’s infectious personality rubs off on others and he does everything with a smile on his face. While winning the Hobey Baker Memorial Award would be a nice finish to an illustrious career, he’d probably trade it all in for UND’s eight NCAA title.

"Locked Out" NHL Gophers Return to Minnesota

Even though they're former Gopher hockey players, and they're from two teams I am not all that fond of, Keith Ballard who's from the Vancouver Canucks and Paul Martin who's from the Pittsburgh Penguins; they both did a pretty good job in this video and it's very funny. Thank God the NHL is back on.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

What a start to the second half of the season, not a single spilt to be had; the closest series to a split was BSU-WMU, with a win/tie result.  We also have a new leader atop the WCHA; UNO grabbed the top spot from SCSU, so UNO in now numero uno J

Almost every team has played half (14-games) the league schedule, except UM and UND which have played 12 games.

WCHA Games

Nebraska-Omaha @ Denver
Last weekend the Mavericks swept the CC Tigers (8-4, 3-1) in Omaha and the Pioneers swept the Big Red of Cornell (5-1, 2-1) in Denver.

The Pioneers are just two points behind the Mavericks in the standings. It would appear that DU has righted their ship after a dismal eight game winless streak, they are now on a three game winning stretch.  Looking at the second half schedule UNO has the third easiest in the league, while DU has the third toughest.  DU would like to sweep this series to vault them into first and have some room for error.  After this weekend DU plays five of the next six on the road.  If DU plays stingy, like the past three games, only giving up two goals, they can sent the Mavericks packing with no points.  PIONEERS SWEEP

Wisconsin @ Minnesota State
Last weekend the Badgers swept the Seawolves (5-3, 1-0) in Anchorage and the Mavericks swept the Friars of Providence (4-3ot, 4-0) in Mankato.

The Badgers are winners of four in a row and unbeaten in their last eight games, 5-0-3.  They beat/tied DU, tied MTU twice, and swept UAH and UAA.  I hate to say it, but other than the DU games, they haven’t exactly beat top teams.  The Badgers did however put some goals up in their last four games, so they have to have some scoring optimism/confidence now.  The Mavericks are winners of four in a row, have won 11 of their last 12, going 11-0-1.  That includes the sweep of UW back at Thanksgiving, which started this run.  I like MSUM’s chances go taking all four games from UW this season.  MAVERICKS SWEEP

Michigan Tech @ Minnesota-Duluth
Last weekend the Huskies were on a hockey free New Year’s weekend as were the Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs last action was a pair of losses, to Maine and Ferris State at the Florida College Classic, the end of December.  The Huskies last games were wins over Michigan and Western Michigan to win the Great Lakes Invitational, also at the end of December.

The Huskies are 2-4-2 away from Houghton this season, and the Bulldogs are 3-4-1 at home in the Amsoil Arena.  The Bulldogs could get their heads above water this weekend with a sweep and keep in the hunt for home ice in March.  The Huskies have the fourth easiest schedule in the second half, so they still have a chance for home ice as well.  But they need to make their move and fast, to keep that hope alive.  SPLIT

Alaska-Anchorage @ Minnesota
Last weekend the Seawolves were swept (5-3, 1-0) by the Badgers in Anchorage and the Gophers beat Notre Dame (4-1) on a rare Tuesday evening game in Minneapolis.

The Seawolves have yet to win a game (0-4-2 away) at an opponent’s home rink (they are 1-1-0 at neutral sites this season).  UAA is currently on a six game losing stretch, and have only won once in Nov/Dec/Jan.  The Gophers are 9-1-1 at home this season.  This weekend could be a trap weekend for the Gophers if they are reliving their recent wins and looking ahead to next week against UND.  But the UofM has a couple of advantages, one UAA will most likely be rusty, since they haven’t played in about a month and two, they have more talent up and down their bench than UAA has.  GOPHERS SWEEP

Colorado College @ North Dakota
Last weekend the Tigers were swept (8-4, 3-1) by the UNO Mavericks in Omaha and NoDak swept Holy Cross (5-2, 3-2) in Grand Forks.

These teams meet Nov-30 and Dec-1 in Colorado Springs with each team getting a win, CC that Friday 5-3 and UND on Saturday 3-2 in overtime.  UND is 6-1-3 at home in the Engelstad Arena this year and the Tigers are 3-7-0 away from Colorado Springs.  NoDak is on a seven game unbeaten streak, winning their last five games.  The Tigers are on a seven game winless streak, losing six and tying once.  CC’s last win was against UND, and what was their only win in their last 12 games.  It appears as if the Tigers season is slipping away from them, which is surprising, given all the offensive talent they have.  You almost have to believe that CC will throw everything they got, including the kitchen sink, at UND this weekend, being backed into a corner.  UND got back a couple of players over the break, and with the break and some fresh legs, look to UND to be too deep for CC to keep up.  NODAK SWEEP

Bu's controversial goal against Harvard

BU's forward Danny O'Regan scores a controversial goal against Harvard Crimson goalie Raphael Girard, but after further review it appears that the Hockey East Official Kevin Shea made the right call. I know some of our friends won't like the call but, the call on the ice looks correct. What do you think?

Is the Redskins’ name giving them bad karma?

While it's not a hockey story. I thought it was a significant sports story, that is in the Washington Post. This story has also gotten some discussion around the talk radio show circuit today and I was wondering what others thought about it"?
Courtland Milloy, Washington Post --- So, Washington football fans, how’s that offensive team name and demeaning sports mascot working out? Whooping and hollering as RGIII goes on a “Redskins” warpath only to leave a trail of tears when his wounded knee gets buried at FedEx Field.

In this obscene home team sports fantasy, the gifted Robert Griffin III was reduced to a “noble savage.” Let the “Redskin” play hurt. He can take it. Hail to the young brave-hearted quarterback as he limps into battle on that injured knee. Three cheers as he fights on his one good leg for Old D.C.

----------(snip)----------

Bad karma, I tell you, that team name.

Now don’t go trying to prove otherwise by digging up some ancient Washington victory from back in, say, Joe Gibbs’s early days. This is a new era. Attitudes are changing; progressive thinking is emerging on everything from guns, gays and gas guzzling to debt, deficits and doctor bills.

Besides, Washington’s professional football team has raked up one disappointing season after another since 1992 — the year D.C. resident Suzan Harjo became the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking to change the team’s disparaging name.

NCAA Division I Hockey Top 20 Scorers...

Here is a screen shot of the top 20 NCAA points leaders. Notice, UND's Corban Knight is third nationally in points per game. Knight accumulated that points total against the 5th hardest strength of schedule. In comparison, UNO's Ryan Walters accumulated his impressive points total against the 21st hardest SOS.

This weekend, UND plays the Colorado College Tigers which has a lineup that includes William Rupuzzi, Alex Krushelnyski and Rylan Schwartz.

Corban Knight named Red Baron WCHA Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

MADISON, Wis. – Forwards Josh Archibald of the University of Nebraska Omaha, who scored four goals in a league sweep over Colorado College last weekend, and Corban Knight of the University of North Dakota, who produced six scoring points in a pair of victories over Holy Cross, have been named Red Baron® WCHA co-Offensive Players of the Week for January 8. Knight also earned the weekly award on Dec. 18.
Archibald, a 5-10, 170-pound sophomore center from Brainerd, Minn., powered the host Mavericks (13-8-1) to back-to-back conference wins over visiting Colorado College on Jan. 4-5 at CenturyLink Center Omaha and into first place in the WCHA race. He notched a three-goal hat trick, the first of his collegiate career, and was the First Star of the Game in UNO’s 8-4 triumph last Friday night, scoring in each period at even-strength, on the power-play and while shorthanded. The following night (Saturday), he scored his fourth goal of the series in the third period, giving him four goals on four shots, as the Mavericks completed the sweep over the Tigers with a 3-1 win. In the two games, he had four goals, four shots on goal and a +4 plus/minus rating.
A draftee of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, Archibald is third in team scoring this season with 21 points (11g, 10a).
Knight, a 6-2, 200-pound senior center from High River, Alberta, put together his second straight six-point weekend and figured in on both game-winning goals as host North Dakota (12-5-3) collected its second sweep in a row with 5-2 and 3-2 non-conference wins over No. 20-ranked Holy Cross at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. Named the game’s No. 1 star last Friday and the No. 2 star on Saturday, Knight also extended his point-scoring streak to 15 games, UND’s longest since All-American Brandon Bochenski had a 17-game streak in 2002-03. He had two goals, including the game-winner, and two assists on Jan. 4 and then had two more assists on Jan. 5, both in the third period and on the power-play, setting up Michael Parks’ game-tying goal and Danny Kristo’s game-winning goal as UND rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 win. Knight also won 21-of-24 (87.5%) face-offs on Saturday and 31-of-40 (77.5%) in the series.

Tuesday Link around… information over-load

The biggest news of the day, besides the lockout being over, is the defection of UNO goalie Anthony Stolarz to the London Knights of the OHL.

This comes on the heels of the Denver defenseman Dakota Mermis leaving the Pioneers, to play for the London Knight’s as well.
I admit that the Mermis defection to London is also puzzling as well. Mermis was in the Denver lineup and playing on a regular basis with the Pioneers (1g-3a—4pts) in 19 games.
Stolarz defecting to the OHL is kind of a head scratcher for me and many other college hockey fans. Stolarz is a second round draft choice of the Philadelphia Flyers and wanted to go the college route and develop his game.
Obviously, Stolarz is probably a little disappointed with his start with the Mavericks (2-5-0, 2.56 GAA, .898 save percentage) but playing time is earned in division I college hockey. I am not sure how it’s going to get any better with the London Knights who are currently stacked at the goalie position with Jake Patterson (16-1-1-1, 2.20 GAA, .924 %), Kevin Bailie (18-4-0-1, 2.50 GAA, .921 save %).
I also imagine, that you have to earn you playing time on a team lead by former NHL forward Mark Hunter as well.
Of course right away people are going to wonder what Mermis and Stolarz were offered by the London Knights?
Also, the Knights have a two headed monster in goal; Jake Patterson and Kevin Bailie are both ranked in the top six for OHL goalies with the likes of Franky Palazzese, Malcolm Subban, Jordan Binnington and John Gibson.
The part that is the most puzzling to me is how “some” of today’s athletes have such a small sense of commitment. It’s like they feel there’re owed something.
It’s this entitlement attitude, that I am entitled to top six minutes, top four defensive pairing or the majority of the starts in net. It doesn’t work that way in life. If things don’t go their way, they’ll just transfer to another team or league. What makes them think they’re going to play more at their next team? Whatever happened to working harder in practice?
Back in the day, if you weren’t playing as much as thought you deserved. Said player, might go visit with the coach. The conversation with the head coach would go something like this. Coach, ‘I am not playing as much as I would like.’ Coach would probably say something like this, ‘then practice harder.’ The conversation most likely would end with the player in question thanking the coach for his time and returning to practice.
