Niagara Hockey: Ryan Murphy gets lengthy suspension for DWI offense

Wow! When I read this news story, I was shocked. The AG School to the south could learn a thing or two on how to discipline and athlete. This is a big loss for the Purple Eagles, because Ryan Murphy is the returning scorer for the team (15g-21a—36pts).
Nancy Fischer, Buffalo News – Ryan Murphy, a senior forward for the Niagara hockey team, will be arraigned in Lewiston Town Court on Wednesday on charges stemming from an accident on Sept. 29.

Murphy has been suspended from the team until Jan. 13.

According to a post on the Lewiston Police Department’s Facebook page, a 24-year old male was arrested for driving while intoxicated and other vehicle and traffic violations after a two-car accident on Lewiston Hill. According to the post, the male refused his breath and blood tests and was transported to ECMC for evaluation.

Niagara County Sheriffs confirmed that Murphy was the driver.

“For violations to the Niagara University student code of conduct and the athlete code of conduct, Ryan has been suspended by the Niagara University men’s hockey team until Jan. 13, 2014,” Niagara coach Dave Burkholder said. “This suspension, which covers over 50 percent of the 2013-14 season, is effective.” Monday. “The expectation is that Ryan will continue as a student at Niagara with plans to rejoin the team for the second half of the season.”
I applaud this suspension and think that it’s time that other programs and sports teams follow suit. Some of the stuff that is allowed in Division I football and other sports is appalling. This is a substantial suspension, this hockey player is going to miss 18 games for this offense that’s half of the season and he’s also one of the top players from last season’s team. It’s obvious that the Niagara coaching staff doesn’t take a win at all cost attitude.

CC fans don’t’ have to purchase three game packages

English: Denver Pioneers logo.
English: Denver Pioneers logo. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
I was reading Joe Paisley’s blog yesterday and I got to thinking. I am also wondering if anyone else is thinking the same thing as well. I would imagine that you can probably expect other schools to do the same thing to the UND fans as well. So, do other NCHC schools expect UND to carry their water for them? Is DU taking advantage of a fan base, knowing that they will buy tickets and fill their arena? One must ask the question, is DU having trouble filling their arena? Maybe REA and UND should do the same thing to school that do these kinds of questionable things UND’s fans. Turnabout is fair play. Right?
Joe Paisley, Colorado Springs Gazette -- Denver single-game tickets go on sale at 9 am. Friday and the Pioneers are now requiring only North Dakota fans to purchase three games. CC fans are not required to do so, according to the ticket office.

North Dakota fans, who already pay $10 more for the premium game (CC is $8 more), will be required to buy two tickets to one of the following seven games: the Merrimack series, Nebraska-Omaha series, Western Michigan series and the single game against Brown.
Do you think that UND should make Denver fans that want to buy tickets to UND's games pay extra or buy tickets to other games? I mean seriously, this seems like a petty policy. I guess Denver also sees UND as a bigger rival than Colorado College as well.

National Collegiate Hockey Conference Commissioner Josh Fenton on the Fan 1390

The Commissioner Josh Fenton of the NCHC was on the Fan 1390 out of Saint Cloud, Minnesota two days ago and you can listen to the interview at [this link]. At the 6:20 mark of the interview there is a discussion about UND fans not being happy about the national television situation. Nothing real controversial, but the radio host did mention it.

Nebraska-Omaha Hockey: Hodge, White dismissed from UNO hockey team

Yikes, the Wheels of Justice do not grind slowly in Omaha. Nebraska-Omaha has dismissed one of their top players after an ugly incident earlier in the month at a downtown bar in Omaha, Nebraska. The school has also dismissed an incoming freshman defenseman and suspended former Red River and Central hockey player Alex Simonson
Daniel James Murphy, World-Herald --- The latest fallout from an alleged fight involving members of the University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team leaves two players dismissed from the team and one player under suspension.

Matt White, 25, Alex Simonson, 23, and Preston Hodge, 21, were each ticketed Aug. 3 on suspicion of disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.

On Friday, Athletic Director Trev Alberts announced in a press release that Hodge, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound freshman defenseman, and White, a 5-foot-10, 187-pound senior and Mav co-captain, had been dismissed from the team.

Alberts said Simonson, who played in 18 of UNO's 39 games last season, is under investigation by the university.
This is a huge loss for the Mavericks, White scored (47g-52a—99pts) was in the top ten for scoring in the WCHA last season.

Defending NCHC Overtime Rules

I know there’s a few fans that are unhappy with the NCHC new overtime rules. Why do I know, because quite a few people have told me they don’t like the new rules. If you go back and read this again, you’ll see the genius in this. There will be no loser points.
Each conference game will be worth three points. Three points will be awarded to any team that wins a game in regulation or within the five-minute sudden-death overtime period. One point will be awarded to each team in a game that remains tied at the conclusion of the overtime period. One additional point will be awarded to the team who wins the shootout, giving that team two points total for winning the game in a shootout. A team that loses in regulation or during the five-minute overtime period will receive zero points.
So, I am going to go on record and say that I am big fan of the NCHC’s new overtime rule. Think about this, there will be “0” points for a loss during the five-minute overtime period, in other words, the losing team receives, nothing, nada, nix, nine, nay, zilch. The losing team will receive zero loser points in the standing for losing in overtime, but why should they? I understand that once the game goes to a shootout that both teams deserve a point, but why reward a team losing during overtime with a point? I think the NCHC got it right and I have to give them credit. Bravo!

NCHC Hockey: Conference to Use Shootouts in Regular Season Games

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) has announced it will use shootouts to award an extra point within conference standings. The NCHC Board of Directors unanimously approved the use of a shootout to decide games after the NCAA standard five-minute, sudden-death overtime period has expired.

“The conference office and our member institutions are committed to engaging our fans in ways that provide them excitement in our home venues,” said NCHC Commissioner Josh Fenton. “The use of a shootout at the conclusion of our standard overtime to determine an extra point within conference standings will make for an exciting race to determine the NCHC regular season champion. We are confident our passionate fans will enjoy this aspect of the game in similar ways to how it is embraced in the National Hockey League.”

All NCHC regular-season conference match-ups will feature a shootout should the game end in a tie at the conclusion of a five-minute overtime period. Any game that uses a shootout will be officially recorded as a tie within the overall record of each team. The Pairwise ranking will be calculated knowing the game was officially recorded as a tie.

The shootout will feature three shooters pre-selected by each team following the conclusion of overtime. The team that scores the most goals among the three shooters will be declared the winner. Should the shootout be tied at the conclusion of the initial three shooters, a sudden- death round with one shooter from each team will commence until a winner is declared. Goaltenders will remain on the same ends of the ice for the shootout as they were for the five-minute overtime period.

Non-conference games held in NCHC venues will also feature a shootout with mutual agreement from the visiting institutions. NCHC Tournament games will not feature shootouts but rather 20-minute sudden death overtime periods will be played until a winner is declared.

(Exception: The third-place game of the NCHC Championship will use a five-minute sudden death overtime followed by the standard protocol for a shootout).

At the end of the regular season, the team with the most points in the standings will be declared the NCHC regular season champion. If two or more teams are tied for the championship, they shall be considered co-champions. For NCHC Tournament seeding, any ties within the conference standings will be broken based upon the following set of rules. No shootout results will be used to break ties in the standings. Games decided in a shootout will be considered a tie when deciding final seeding for the NCHC Tournament.

1. The team with the greater number of NCHC regular-season wins shall be the higher seed.

2. Head-to-head competition: The team with the best NCHC regular-season winning percentage against the other teams tied in the standings

3. Goal Differential: The comparison of total goals for and against each team in contests between (among) the other teams tied in the standings in NCHC regular-season play

4. Winning percentage of the teams tied in the standings against the remaining NCHC teams, starting at the top of the standings and working toward the bottom until the tie is broken.

5. Should the teams still remain tied in the standings, the seeding will be decided by a coin flip.

The NCHC Championship will be held on March 21 and 22, 2014 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn. To learn more about the NCHC Championship Tournament, purchasing tickets and reserving a hotel room, please visit the NCHC website at NCHCHockey.com.

The NCHC, which includes member institutions Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota Duluth, Nebraska Omaha, North Dakota, St. Cloud State and Western Michigan, begins its inaugural season on October 18, 2013, with a double-header featuring North Dakota at Miami and Colorado College hosting Minnesota Duluth. Games times are to be announced.

NCHC Hockey: Shootouts in the NCHC?

Overtime Power Play Face Off
Overtime Power Play Face Off (Photo credit: clydeorama)
I was out all weekend mowing grass at the hunting shack, so this isn’t as new as it could be. It still should add to the debate and feel free to chime in if you like. Or not! Perusing Brad Elliot Schlossman’s blog last week I see that he had this blurb on this media blog.
The NCHC has not finalized anything on shootouts yet, but I’m hearing that it is very, very likely that they will be used for Year 1. Official word on that could come fairly soon.

The point system would be sort of similar to the one used in the CCHA – 3 points for a regulation or OT win, 2 points for a shootout win, 1 point for a shootout loss, 0 points for a regulation loss. The one twist the NCHC is considering is giving a point for an OT loss like the NHL.

The games will still officially go down as a tie for NCAA tournament purposes. So, when I write game stories about a shootout, I will say the game ended in a time and Team A got an extra point for winning the shootout (as I do with WCHA women’s games now).
I think this is an awesome idea. If the NCAA is going to be looked at as developmental hockey league for the professional ranks, why not have a league that more closely resembles NHL play? Wouldn’t that make more sense? Of course it does. Sure, it sucks for the beat writers working on a dead line. Thoughts on the NCHC using shootouts to breaks ties during NCHC play? Also, I like the points system. Just for the record, I have never seen anyone ever leave a game because they went to a shootout. I don’t care what some say.

UND Hockey: Adds two Exhibition Game in B.C.

The UND Hockey added a couple of exhibition hockey games north of border. The University of North Dakota, Princeton University and University of British Columbia will travel to Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia to play an in-season invitational at Simon Fraser University. Simon Fraser plays its home hockey games at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.

For those that are wondering, Simon Fraser University is actually a member of the NCAA Division II conference the GNAC which is in the same athletic conference that UAF and UAA are a member of.

I know there are some fans in the UND fan base that have questioned the logic of this exhibition road trip. I think that it’s pure genius. Long road trips like this also give the UND hockey trip an opportunity to bond on the road.

Official press release

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – For the second time in three seasons, the University of North Dakota men’s hockey program will travel to Canada for in-season competition.

Head coach Dave Hakstol announced today that UND has added the Great Northwest Showcase in Burnaby, British Columbia, to its 2013-14 schedule. UND will face the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University on Jan. 3-4 in a pair of exhibition games at Bill Copeland Sports Centre, the home of Simon Fraser men’s hockey. Princeton University will round out the four-team field.

“We appreciate the invitation and are proud to be a part of this tournament,” said Hakstol. “It is a great opportunity to spread the footprint of NCAA Division I hockey and, at the same time, allows many of our players from Western Canada to return home for two exhibition games.”

The Great Northwest Showcase began in 2012 as a four-game exhibition showcasing top level international university men’s hockey, while promoting the importance of education during an athlete’s competitive career. The event is organized by the Burnaby Mountain Hockey Society, a non-profit organization incorporated in 2010 as the promotional and fundraising body of the SFU men’s hockey program.

Tickets for the Great Northwest Showcase will go on sale in the fall. Official game times will be announced at a later date.

In 2011-12, UND played a regular season non-conference game against Clarkson at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. Dubbed the ‘U.S. College Hockey Classic,' the win over Clarkson was UND's first game on Canadian soil in 59 years. Prior to that, the last time UND played a men's hockey game in Canada was Dec. 29-30, 1953, when UND lost a pair of games to host Fort Frances (Ontario).

In addition to the mobile app, fans can look forward to the launch of the NCHC Shop.  Once launched, the shop will feature NCHC and member institution merchandise and apparel.  The Conference anticipates the launch of both the NCHC Mobile App and the NCHC Shop prior to the start of the season.

Hump Day Links

The summer is starting to wind down. The School year is about to begin in a few weeks. That means that college hockey players will be returning to their respective campuses in a few weeks. Hopefully, this summer has a few hot days left before September comes our way. God knows that last winter was a doozy.

So far this offseason, 30 NCAA hockey players have forgone their college eligibility to sign professional contracts. This is counting Josh Jooris of Union that signed with the Calgary Flames.

Last week, Ludwig Karlsson of the Northeastern Huskies signed with the Ottawa Senators.

The WCHA has released its 2013-14 composite schedule.

University of Maine Black Bears: Civic Center hopes [Ice Breaker] tourney is Ice Breaker for NCAA hockey regional.

Former Wisconsin Badgers Forward Joe Pavelski has signed a five-year extension with the San Jose Sharks. Pavelski has (150g-186a—336pts) in 479 NHL games. The extension is for five years and 30 million dollars.

UND Hockey recruit’s Ryan Mantha, Austin Pognaski and Nick Schmaltz are listed on the 2013 Under-18 Select team that will participate in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Finland August 5-10. Team USA begins play against team Finland on Monday, August 5, 2013.
