UND Hockey: Breaking down the Numbers

Here’s something that sticks out for me. From November 15, 2013, UND has a 10-4-2 record. During the 16 games UND averaged 2.81 goals per game. Also, UND gave up 2.56 goals against per game. Breaking it down further, during the last 11 games, UND compiled a (9-1-1) record. During that time, UND scored an average of 2.90 goals per game and gave up 2.00 goals against per game.

Power penalty-kill struggles  

Here’s something that I would be concerned about. Going into the first series against the Mavericks, UND had killed 32-of-33 penalties. That was tops in the nation. Since that time, UND’s penalty-kill has struggled and ranks 52nd nationally going percent (65-for-86) at 75.6 percent. During those 17 games, UND has allowed two or more power-play goals in seven- of-17 games. During those 17 games, UND has a 11-4-2 record. (UNDSID)

Power-play not much better

UND’s power play has also struggled in recent weeks, having gone 3 for 28 (10.7%) over the last seven games. UND has been held without a power-play goal in four of its last five games. One exception, on January 24, 2014, against DU, UND went 2-for-4. (UND SID)

Union's Shayne Gostisbehere gets a five minute major for a shoulder-to-shoulder hit

First off, the hit was a little late as the ref was blowing the whistle, however, this doesn't appear to be a hit to the head. Barry Melrose opens his mouth and proves he knows little about hockey. The puck is at the forwards feet.

To me it looks like Union's Shayne Gostisbehere got a five minute major for a shoulder-to-shoulder hit. Guess who, WCHA on-ice officials Marco Hunt and Derek Shepherd officiating again. This officaiting crew is absolutely brutal, these two guys get the calls wrong, more times than they get it right, if I had to bet, it was Marco Hunt that made the call on this play as well, notice Derek Shepherd has already made the call on the Quinnipiac's Connor Jones, who was called for tripping.

I do agree, maybe it's time for the NCAA to review contact to the head calls. Seems like some of the officials are having one heck of a time getting the call right.

Shawn Ostrow pounds Eamonn McDermott in the head.

This is text book contact to the head. I don't like five minute majors at the end of the game, that end up only being game misconducts. I think that Shawn Ostrow should be sitting tomorrow night for his dirty hit on Eamonn McDermott.

Nolan Zajac goal that was waved off.

The Denver Pioneers thought they had the go ahead goal at the 1:45 mark of the third period, or did they. After further review, the on-ice officials correctly ruled that Denver forward David Makowski had interfered with Colorado College Tiger's goalie Joe Howe.

Examples of WCHA Officiating; inconsistency.

You make the call... Here is what I saw. First, you have a shoulder to shoulder hit that's called a elbow, that would lead to a power play goal by the Pioneers. Then, you get a legit call on the Scott Mayfield, that's a five minute major in my book. In my opinion, WCHA ref Don Adam made the right call on that play. Adam's side kick, Tim Walsh probably blew it as well as he could have given the BU players a five minute major and a game misconduct as well. That was dangerous hit and I would rather see the ref call a major on that play. What do you think?
