Jutting to the UNO Mavericks?

Lets Go Mav's favorite ex-head coach is the topic of rumors on the internet tonight - it's rumored that former Minnesota State University Mankato Mavericks head coach Troy Jutting might be headed to Nebraska Omaha to be an assistant coach with the UNO Mavericks under former Fighting Sioux head coach Dean Blais.  Apparently, this rumor isn't popular with the UNO Mavericks fans.

Ben Hanowski's Beard

Wow!!! This video is really funny... Stick Tap to Rachel Lenzi, she had this on her daily internet newspaper, the Rachel Lenzi Daily. I mean seriously, check out Saint Cloud State forward Ben Hanowski's playoff beard, you could have animals living in that thing and he might not ever know it.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

Here we are, the regular season has ended and we begin the WCHA playoffs. Congratulations to the Gophers, who captured their 12th WCHA regular season title by beating their arch-rival, the Badgers, on Saturday night. The Bulldogs fell just a little short of a fourth league title and will have to settle for second this year. However, this weekend starts a new season for everyone, now it's do or do not, win two move on, lose two and your playoff season is over (for most teams).

Let’s look back at last year and compare it to this season. This year it took 28pts go get home ice and last year it also took 28 points to get home ice. Last year CC finished in 6th place with an even record too, 13-13-2, very similar to SCSU record of 12-12-4 this year. Both this year and last the 2nd place team had 37 points, and 3rd place had 36 points. It is funny how some things seem to stay the same.

(#’s are current Pair Wise Rankings)

Michigan Tech @ #19 Colorado College
(season series - CC wins 2-0)

Last weekend these teams played each other with the Tigers sweeping the Huskies in Colorado Springs, 5-2 and 2-0.

With the sweep last weekend the Tigers improved their home record to 11-5-2 this season. The Huskies fell to 5-10-2 on the road last weekend in Colorado Springs. This series should be a tough fought one. It is hard to sweep the same team back to back weekends, and I don’t think it is going to happen. MTU has fought to hard this season to let it end on a four game losing skid to the same team. The Huskies need to score first in these games to take the crowd out of the equation. Also that will allow MTU to dictate the pace of the game. In the end, I think the Tigers will prevail, but it won’t be easy. TIGERS IN 3

Nebraska-Omaha @ #25 St. Cloud State

(season series - UNO wins 1-0-1)

Last weekend the UNO Mavericks were swept by the Pioneers in Omaha and the Huskies took three points from the Bulldogs in St. Cloud.

These teams met back in late November in Omaha with the Mavericks winning the opener 4-3 and tying in the Saturday rematch, 2-2. The Huskies are heating up at the right time. SCSU is 3-1-1 in their last five and are 5-2-1 in their last eight. The Mavericks have been doing the opposite, they have cooled down, and you might say they have even gone cold. Their losses last weekend cost them home ice and now they hit the road. UNO has now hit a season worst four game losing streak, and have been reeling, going 2-8-1 over their last eleven games. The Mavericks have not swept anybody on the road this season, they closest they came was taking three points from BSU in November. The Mavericks might take a game from the Huskies at the National Hockey Center, but I don’t think they will make it to St. Paul. HUSKIES SWEEP

Alaska-Anchorage @ #6t Minnesota
(season series - UM wins 2-0)

Last weekend the Seawolves were swept by the Beavers in Anchorage and the Gophers split with the Badgers in Minneapolis.

These teams met in Minneapolis back at the end of October, with the Gophers winning 5-0 in the opener and 3-1 in the finale. And I’m sure most everyone remembers what happened a year ago with the Gophers hosted the Seawolves in the first round, UAA swept them at Mariucci, 4-3 and 2-0. Since last year, these teams have changed significantly, the Gophers are much better than they were last year. The Seawolves have dropped off some since last season. I can’t recall the top seed in the WCHA losing the first round playoff series to the bottom team. On paper this should be a pair of slaughters, but you still have to play the games. I don’t think the Gophers will be over looking UAA this time around. GOPHERS SWEEP

Minnesota State @ #2t Minnesota-Duluth
(season series - UMD wins 3-0-1)

Last weekend the Mavericks were swept by the Sioux in Grand Forks and the Bulldogs got a point from the SCSU Huskies in St. Cloud.

These teams first played back in mid November in Duluth with the Bulldogs sweeping the games by scores of 5-2 and 7-3. They just played in three weeks ago in Mankato, with UMD winning Friday night 4-2 and then tying Saturday night 4-4. It is fairly obvious that the Mavericks need to hold the Bulldogs to less than four goals a game, if they want to make some noise in the post season. The Mavericks are 6-12-0 away from Mankato this year and the Bulldogs are 12-5-1 in Duluth this year. MSUM has their work cut out for them this weekend, but if they can clamp down defensively and get some timely saves they could make a series out of it. In the end, UMD just has to much fire power up front and the Mavericks cannot stymie them forever. BULLDOGS SWEEP

Bemidji State @ #13 North Dakota
(season series - UND wins 2-0)

Last weekend the Beavers swept the Seawolves in Anchorage and the Sioux swept the MSUM Mavericks in Grand Forks

Edit: These teams split in Bemidji, back in November, with UND winning the first game of the series 5-2 and Bemidji winning the second game 1-0. The Sioux are heating up late in the season they are 8-2-1 in their last eleven games. The Beavers snapped out of four game losing streak by sweeping the Seawolves last weekend. With those pair of wins BSU improved their road record to 6-10-2, meanwhile UND in 14-4-3 in Grand Forks this season. The Beavers need to play some solid defense in front of their net minder, if they hope to extend their season. UND just needs to play their up tempo game style and stay out of the penalty box, in order to prevail this weekend. The Sioux are heating up and that doesn’t bode well for the Beavers. SIOUX SWEEP

Wisconsin @ #11 Denver
(season series - CC wins 2-0)

Last weekend the Badgers split with the Gophers and the Pioneers swept the UNO Mavericks in Omaha.

These teams just played three weeks ago in Madison with the Pioneers winning on Friday 3-0 and the Badgers taking Saturday’s game 5-2. The Pioneers are 12-5-2 at Magness Arena and the Badgers are 4-9-1 away from the Kohl Center. The Badgers just had their four game winning streak snapped on Saturday night, but going 4-1-0 over their last five is a good sign for cardinal and white fans. The Pioneers have won three in a row and six of their last eight games, with the loses to UW and UND. DU was the pre-season favorite to win the league, and as of late they are looking like the team everyone was expecting. UW is playing with a lot of confidence right now and will give DU all they can handle and then some in this series. However, DU has some of the best top end talent in their forwards, which will be the difference maker in this series. PIONEERS IN 3

10. Wisconsin – (8-14-2 WCHA, 13-15-2) the Wisconsin Badgers split their weekend series (0-3 L, 5-2 W) with the Denver Pioneers in Madison and broke a five game losing streak with a victory over the Pioneers on Saturday night. This week the Badgers take their unimpressive 1-8-1 road record to Bemidji where they will play the Bemidji State Beavers.

Zombo Disallowed Goal UNO vs. CC

This is from last night's game [Friday Night] between UNO and C.C., the Tigers won the game 4-3. I don't know, it looks like the on ice officials blew the call on this one. There is no distinct kicking motion on the play. Of course the on ice officials for this series were Don Adam, Timm Walsh, two of the worst officials in the WCHA.

I was surprised that Dean Blais didn't protest this goal more but he seemed to be fine with the call after the explanation from the refs.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

This week we have a full schedule of six WCHA series. Every team is now down to six games left in the regular season, except MSUM and UAA which are down to four. This means teams have a maximum of twelve points left on the table to grab in an effort to move up the WCHA rankings. Taking that into account, it is looking the MSUM Mavericks, the Badgers will be on the road in the first round, and the Seawolves are already assured of first round trip. It also appears to be down to a three team, UM, UMD, and DU, race for the coveted McNaughton Cup.

Also we wish the young Mr. Zucker a quick and full recovery from the illegal hit he received from the UM’s Kyle Rau.

WCHA Games
Note - the #'s are now the PairWise Ranking (PWR)

Nebraska-Omaha @ Colorado College
Last weekend Mavericks took 3-points from the MTU Huskies in Houghton and the Tigers were swept by the Beavers in Bemidji.

The Tigers have started to slide, only get one win in their last five games, going 1-3-1. Over those games, they have not scored more than two goals in a game. CC needs their offense to start scoring some more, if they want to get claw their way back into the win column. The Mavericks also only have one win in their last five games too, going 1-2-2. However, they have been scoring more than CC, but have given up too many goals. UNO needs to get some solid goaltending in better defensive zone coverage to limit opponents scoring chances. The Mavericks play the Gophers and the Pioneers after this series. UNO will need to get points any way possible to stay in the mix for a home playoff spot. SPLIT

#3 Minnesota-Duluth @ Minnesota State
Last weekend Bulldogs split with North Dakota in Duluth and the Mavericks swept the Seawolves in Anchorage.

The Mavericks are hot right now, winning five of their last seven games, going 5-2-0. Also since 2012 they have not lost back to back games. The Bulldogs have been struggling lately going 2-3-1 in their last six games. UMD has a chance to win the WCHA again, thanks to DU sweeping UM. I’m sure they are fully aware of this fact and will step up to the challenge and try and win their first McNaughton Cup this millennium. SPLIT

Alaska-Anchorage @ St. Cloud State
Last weekend the Seawolves were swept by the MSUM Mavericks in Anchorage and the SCSU Huskies enjoyed a free weekend at home.

The Huskies still have a chance to get home ice, but they need points and some help. They can help themselves this weekend by taking four points from the woeful Seawolves. UAA is playing for pride now and can play the spoiler role, if they can get a win here or there. Huskies 3-pts

Bemidji State @ #14 Minnesota
Last weekend the Beavers swept the Tigers in Bemidji and the Gophers were swept by the Pioneers in Denver.

The Beavers are on a four game unbeaten streak going 3-0-1 their last four games. The Gophers saw their grip on the top spot dwindle down to a single point last weekend. UM’s struggles on Friday nights continues on, and if it happens again this weekend they could slip down the standings a spot. These are the only games they play this year, last season the Gophers won one game and tied the other, in Bemidji. This year BSU has struggled on the road, going 4-8-2, and the Gophers are 12-5-0 at Mariucci Arena this season. SPLIT

Michigan Tech @ #15 North Dakota
Last weekend the Huskies earned one point against the UNO Mavericks in Houghton and North Dakota split with the Bulldogs in Duluth.

This will be the first meeting for these long time rivals this year. Last year UND beat MTU the last two games of the regular season (6-1, 11-2) and then twice again the next weekend in the first round of the playoffs (8-0, 3-1). The Sioux…North Dakota has won four of their last five games and looking to be finding their scoring touch again. The Huskies have been sliding their last seven games, going 2-3-2 over that span. Tech is 5-7-1 on the road this season. The last time they won in Grand Forks was March 15th of 2008 in overtime, in a first round WCHA playoff game, UND won the three game series. North Dakota is fighting for home, just like the Huskies are and every point now is critical. North Dakota Sweep

#7 Denver @ Wisconsin
Last weekend the Pioneers swept the Gophers in Denver and the Badgers had a weekend of in Madison.

The Pioneers pulled themselves within three points of the top spot in the WCHA last weekend. In case you forgot DU was the preseason favorite to win the league this year. The Pioneers are heating up going 7-1-1 in their last nine games. The Badgers are just playing for pride now, they best they could do we be to end the season with an even record. The Badgers are winless in their last four games. In the end, the Pioneers just have too much talent for the Badgers to handle this season. Pioneers Sweep

Goon's WCHA Power Rankings 2/12/2012

Western Collegiate Hockey Association logoImage via WikipediaThis is my weekly WCHA Power Rankings for INSIDE HOCKEYZack Friedli from Hockey State of Mind and I do a weekly WCHA Power Rankings.

1.  Minnesota Duluth – (13-6-3 WCHA, 19-7-4) The Bulldogs split with the UND Fighting Sioux this past weekend (1-3 L, 5-4 W).  This weekend the Bulldogs travel to Minnesota State to play the Mavericks in Mankato.

2. Denver – (12-6-4 WCHA, 17-9-4). The Denver Pioneers swept the Minnesota Gophers in Denver this past weekend (5-3 W, 4-3 W O.T.)  This weekend the Pioneers travel to Wisconsin to take on the struggling Badgers who are winless in their last four games.

3. North Dakota – (12-10-0, 16-11-2) The University of North Dakota split with the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (3-1 W, 4-5 L). The Fighting Sioux return home to entertain the resurgent MTU Huskies at home this weekend.

4. Minnesota – (15-7-0 WCHA, 19-11-1). The Minnesota Gophers were swept by the Denver Pioneers this past weekend in Denver (3-5 L, 4-5 L O.T.) The Gophers entertain the smoking hot Bemidji State Beavers at Mariucci Arena this weekend.

5 Colorado College – (12-9-1 WCHA, 15-11-2) The Tigers were swept by the Bemidji State Beavers this past weekend in Bemidji (2-4 L, 1-4 L). The Tigers return home to play the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks.

6. Nebraska-Omaha – (10-7-5 WCHA, 13-11-6) The Mavericks took three point against the Michigan Tech Huskies (3-3 T, 4-0 W) in Houghton, Michigan this past weekend. The Mavericks travel to Colorado Springs to play the Tigers this weekend.

Tie – 7. Michigan Tech – (10-9-3 WCHA, 13-14-3) The Michigan Tech Huskies  took  one point this weekend against the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (3-3 T, 0-4 L). This weekend the Tech Huskies make the trek down highway 2 to play the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

Tie – 7. Bemidji State – (9-10-3 WCHA, 15-12-3) The Beavers swept the Colorado College Tigers this past weekend in Bemidji (4-2 W, 4-1 W). This weekend the Beavers travel to Minneapolis to play the Minnesota Gophers. The Beavers are 4-1-1 in their last six games.

9. St. Cloud State – (9-10-3 WCHA, 12-14-4) The Huskies were Idle this past weekend.  This weekend the Huskies entertain the  Anchorage Alaska Seawolves who have won one game in 11.

10. Wisconsin – (7-13-2 WCHA, 12-14-2) The Wisconsin Badgers were off this past weekend. Ironically, the idle Badgers actually fell to 11th place in the WCHA with the Minnesota State’s sweep of the Seawolves. That being said, the Badgers have two games in hand on the Mavericks and entertain the Denver Pioneers this weekend at the Kohl Center. The Badgers look to break a four game losing streak against the Pioneers.

11. Minnesota State – (8-15-1 WCHA, 12-19-1) The Minnesota State Mavericks swept the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (3-2 W, 2-1 W). This weekend the Mavericks entertain the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in Mankato.

12.  Alaska-Anchorage – (4-19-1 WCHA, 7-19-2) The Seawolves were swept by the Minnesota State Mavericks in Anchorage Alaska (2-3 L, 1-2 L). It would be an understatement to say that the Seawolves are struggling as they have lost 10 of 11 games and have one win since December 9th 2011. This weekend the Seawolves travel to Saint Cloud State Huskies.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

What a difference a week makes. The standing show that only 4 points separate 3rd through 8th places. That is a lot of teams in the fight for home ice in the first round, which is just a month away now.

WCHA Games

#10 Colorado College @ Bemidji State
Last weekend Tigers took 3-points from the Pioneers in a home-and-home series and the Beavers took 3-points from the UNO Mavericks in Omaha.

The Tigers vaulted over their rivals from Denver in the standings. CC might be riding high after taking care of business last weekend, but they better not be looking past the Beavers. BSU have been good at home in the Sanford Center, boasting a 9-4-1 record in Bemidji. SPLIT

Nebraska-Omaha @ Michigan Tech
Last weekend the Mavericks got a point at home against the Beavers and the Huskies split with the MSUM Mavericks in Mankato.

These games will be like a playoff series, since they are in a three way tie for the last home ice spots. A pair of losses now for either one can now mean the difference in playing in front of their fans in March or going on the road. The Mavericks are 5-6-2 away from Omaha and the Huskies are 8-4-1 in Houghton this season. The Huskies have been scoring at a 4.7gpg pace since January 1st. But when you get to this time of the season and teams are desperate for points, things happen. I’m going with the home team. HUSKIES SWEEP

Minnesota State @ Alaska-Anchorage
Last weekend the Mavericks split with the MTU Huskies in Mankato and the Seawolves split with the Bulldogs in Anchorage.

If the Mavericks sweep this series they pretty much lock the Seawolves into last place. The flip side is if the Seawolves sweep they would be tied with MSUM for 11th place. The Seawolves should have the advantage, being at home last weekend, and MSUM having to travel, way up north. SEAWOLVES SWEEP

#2 Minnesota @ #14 Denver
Last weekend the Gophers were on a bye weekend and the Pioneers salvaged a point against their arch-rivals, the CC Tigers, in the home/away series.
Before last weekend the Pioneers still had sight of first place, now they need to fight to keep in the top half of the league, my how things can change in one weekend. The Pioneers can reel in the Gophers with a pair of wins this weekend. The Pioneers had been on a five game winning streak until last weekend. The Gophers come in winning their last 3 games and 4 out of their last 5. The Gophers offensive has not been putting up many goals as of late, so if the Pioneers can get some good goaltending and a few breaks they can get some points this weekend. SPLIT

#16 North Dakota @ #2 Minnesota-Duluth
Last weekend Bulldogs split with the Seawolves in Anchorage and North Dakota had bye weekend to rest.

The Bulldogs have struggle their last four games, and have slide out of first place in the WCHA. North Dakota has yet to go on their second half run that has been the norm for them the past seven years under Hakstol. UND needs points this weekend if they want to keep hold of the top half and try and secure home ice. The Bulldogs are pretty much assured of home ice at this point (barring a complete meltdown), but I’m sure they want the McNaughton Cup. SPLIT

9. St. Cloud State – (9-10-3 WCHA, 12-14-4) The Huskies wept the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison this past weekend (5-1 W, 2-1 W).  The depleted Huskies only dressed 11 healthy forwards on Saturday night. Huskies junior goalie Mike Lee returned from a hip injury last weekend. This weekend he was stellar in net stopping 72/74 shots this weekend against the Wisconsin Badgers. Lee has only given up four goals in three games since his return from injury.

10. Wisconsin – (7-13-2 WCHA, 12-14-2) The Wisconsin Badgers were swept by the Saint Cloud State Huskies this past weekend (1-5 l, 1-2 L) at the Kohl Center. The Badgers are idle next weekend.

11. Minnesota State – (6-15-1 WCHA, 10-19-1) The Minnesota State Mavericks split their weekend series Michigan Tech Huskies (5-3 W, 3-7 L). The Mavericks travel to Anchorage, Alaska to play the UAA Seawolves.

12.  Alaska-Anchorage – (4-17-1 WCHA, 7-17-2) The Seawolves split with the UMD Bulldogs at home (1-4 L, 3-2 W). With their win against the Bulldogs on Saturday night the Seawolves halted an 8 game losing streak.  Before last night’s win the Seawolves had not won a game since December 9, 2011. This weekend the Seawolves entertain the Minnesota State Mavericks.

Controversial non call in St Cloud

While I was at the Sioux game versus the Badgers, and my twitter blew up and this the goal by the Huskies was the play that set the Gopher fans off.

So did the refs blow the call? Is this indicative of WCHA officiating? It looks like Nate Condon was hacked and pulled down causing an opportunity going the other way and Ben Hanowski scores on Patterson.

Here is what the Star Tribune had to say on the matter.

Even so, the Huskies scored the only goal of the first period. One second Nate Condon had a near breakaway for the Gophers before being separated from the puck.

The next, SCSU had an odd-man rush that ended with Ben Hanowski sliding the puck underneath Gophers goalie Kent Patterson.

Gophers coach Don Lucia chewed out the referee who dared skate over to the visitors' bench. Lucia wanted a hooking call on Condon's rush.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

Looking at the calendar this is the last weekend of action in January. We all know that means the season is winding down, put the stakes are going up. After this weekend it basically leaves us the month of February in the regular season. The teams are so bunched up in the middle of standings it should be another great race for home ice in the first round of the WCHA playoffs.

WCHA STANDINGS

Team………………………W-L-T………Points
1. Minnesota………………13-5-0…..……26
2. Minnesota-Duluth……..11-3-2….…….24
3. Colorado College……..11-7-0………..22
4. Nebraska-Omaha………9-6-3……….. 21
5. Denver……………………8-5-3………..19
6. North Dakota……….…...9-9-0….……..18
7. Michigan Tech………….8-7-1…….…..17
7. St. Cloud St……………. 7-8-3……….. 17
9. Wisconsin……………....7-9-2…..…….14
10. Bemidji State….……….5-9-2…………12
11. Minnesota State………4-13-1…………9
12. Alaska-Anchorage…...3-14-1…………7

WCHA Games

Minnesota State @ Bemidji State
Last weekend the MSUM Mavericks split with the UNO Mavericks in Mankato, and the Beavers enjoyed a weekend off.

Since the calendar flipped over to 2012 the Mavericks are holding their own, going 3-3-0 in January. The Beavers have a good record this year at the Sanford Center, owning a 8-3-1 record at home. Both teams are need of points. If they want to climb the standings and make run at home ice for the first round. The Beavers look to have a better shot at hosting, since they have more points currently and two games in hand on the Mavericks. The Mavericks haven’t been to good on the road, their last WCHA road win came back on November 5 versus MTU. MSUM fans would probably say they are due for a WCHA road win. SPLIT

Wisconsin Badgers @ #18 North Dakota
Last weekend Badgers swept the UAA Seawolves at the Kohl Center in Madison and North Dakota split with the SCSU Huskies in St. Cloud.

Earlier this season the Sioux visited the Badgers in Madison and left there with no points. UND will be looking to return the favor this weekend in Grand Forks. North Dakota has suffered numerous injuries this season, making everyone step up their game night in and night out. If they can stay healthy down the stretch here, they could make a run up the standings. This would help to secure home ice in the first round. Meanwhile, the Badgers are in what most are calling a rebuilding year. NORTH DAKOTA SWEEP

St. Cloud State vs #3 Minnesota
Last weekend Huskies split with North Dakota in St. Cloud and the Gophers split with CC Tigers in Minneapolis.

This is a home-home series with the opener in Minneapolis and the finale in St. Cloud. The Gophers have dropped the last few Friday night games they played and this weekend it is even more important for the gophers to win on Friday, with Saturday’s game in St. Cloud. The Huskies have been a bit inconsistent this season, so it is hard to predict which team will show up on which night. SPLIT

#15 Denver @ Alaska-Anchorage
Last weekend the Seawolves were swept by the Badgers in Madison and the Pioneers had a weekend off to rest up.

The Pioneers take the big airplane ride this weekend up to scenic Alaska. The Seawolves have not played in front of the home town fans since December 3-4 (vs. North Dakota). I’m sure the players and fans are chomping at the bit to play a game at the Sully. The Seawolves have been lighting the lamp this year, but have been surrendering a few too many as well. If the Pioneers can take the lead and make UAA play from behind they could leave Anchorage with some points. SPLIT

Michigan Tech @ #1 Minnesota-Duluth
Last weekend Huskies lost their one game against Northern Michigan in Houghton and the Bulldogs swept the UAH Chargers in Duluth.

Tech hits the road this weekend and will be on it six of their next eight games. The Huskies last road trip was to Minneapolis, where they split with the Gophers. MTU will have to avoid getting into a shoot out with the Bulldogs, UMD packs to much firepower for the Huskies to match. The Bulldogs will need to put shots up on the Huskies; they have allowed five goals or more in six games this season. The Huskies have shown they can take on the top powers this year, so don’t be too surprised if they leave Duluth with a point or two. BULLDOGS 3-pts.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

The second half of the season is underway. Thus, we only have seven weekends of WCHA games on the schedule. After this weekend, the WCHA season will be about 2/3rds done with. Or look at it this way, the WCHA Final Five is just under two months away.

WCHA STANDINGS

Team………………………W-L-T……Points
1. Minnesota……………..…12-4-0…..……24
2. Minnesota-Duluth……..11-3-2….…….24
3. Colorado College….…..10-6-0………..20
4. Denver…………………...…8-5-3………..19
4. Nebraska-Omaha………8-5-3……….. 19
6. Michigan Tech…….…….8-7-1…….…..17
7. North Dakota……...…...8-8-0….……..16
8. St. Cloud St……….……. 6-7-3……….. 15
9. Bemidji State……….…. 5-9-2……….. 12
10. Wisconsin………….…..5-9-2…..…….12
11. Alaska-Anchorage…....3-12-1…………7
11. Minnesota State…….…3-12-1…………7

WCHA Games

Nebraska-Omaha @ Minnesota State
Last weekend the UNO Mavericks split with the Bulldogs in Omaha and the MSUM Mavericks split with the Badgers in Mankato, with each team getting a shutout.

You know what will happen if I say the Mavericks will win this weekend… both games will end in ties, so I’m not going that route. It looks like one group of cattle has already been put out to pasture this season (MSUM) and the other is grazing
right along. I am going with the easy pick here. SPLIT

#17 North Dakota @ St. Cloud State
Last weekend North Dakota split with the Gophers in Grand Forks and the Huskies split with the Tigers in Colorado Springs.

In the end of October, these teams met in Grand Forks with the Huskies taking the opener 4-0, and the Sioux (UND was called the Sioux back then) took the Saturday game 3-1. But that was almost three months ago. Since then both teams have developed and improved their games. These teams are only separated by a single point in the standing and four points would go a long way in the race for home ice. UND hasn’t been great on the road this year, sporting a 3-5-0 road record. SCSU has 5-3-3 record at the National Hockey Center this year. Looking at all the GF-GA numbers they are pretty even too. This series is looking like a… SPLIT

#11 Colorado College @ #4 Minnesota
Last weekend Tigers split with Huskies in Colorado Springs and the Gophers split with North Dakota in Grand Forks.

The Tigers are tied with UMD for the most goals in the WCHA up to this point, with 66, and the Gophers are not far behind with 58 goals of their own. The bigger difference is goals allowed, CC has given up 54 and the Gophers have allowed 32. The Gophers have been good at home, but have let some games get away from at Mariucci. If the Tigers can limit the Gophers chances, they can leave Minneapolis with some points. SPLIT

Alaska-Anchorage @ Wisconsin Badgers
Last weekend the Seawolves were swept by the Huskies in Houghton (those where UAA’s first games since December 9-10th vs CC), and the Badgers split with the Mavericks in Mankato.

The Seawolves might have shaken off the rust last weekend and could be handful for the struggling Badgers this year. Both teams need to get on a winning streak if they want to stay in the hunt for home ice come March. SPLIT

NON-CONFERENCE

Alabama-Huntsville (1-17-1) @ #1 Minnesota-Duluth
Last weekend the UAH Chargers with the in and the Bulldogs split with the Mavericks in Omaha.

I’m just going to tell it like it is, the Chargers are the bottom team in D-I hockey and the Bulldogs are the top. Need I say more? SWEEP

Northern Michigan (8-7-3) @ Michigan Tech (11-11-1)
Last weekend the Huskies swept the Seawolves in Houghton and the Wildcats got a point on the road against CCHA foe Michigan State in their weekend series.

The Wildcats are dismal 2-7-1 away from Marquette this season, but are good at home going 8-1-4 there. One of their home wins was over the Huskies back on Dec. 16th. The Huskies are 8-3-1 this year in MacInnes Arena and would like nothing better than getting a win over their Upper Peninsula rival. HUSKIES WIN.

1.  Minnesota Duluth – (11-3-2 WCHA, 15-4-3) The Bulldogs split with the UNO Mavericks (6-2 W, 3-1 L) in Omaha, Nebraska. The Bulldogs return home to play the University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers.

2. Minnesota – (12-4-0 WCHA, 16-8-1) Minnesota split with North Dakota (1-2 L, W 6-2 W). This weekend the Gophers entertain the Colorado College Tigers at Mariucci Arena. Minnesota is 7-7-1 in their last 15 games.

3.  Denver – (8-5-3 WCHA, 13-8-3). This past weekend the Pioneers swept the Bemidji State Beavers (6-3 W, 3-2 W) in Denver Colorado. This weekend the Pioneers are off.

4. Colorado College – (13-8-1 WCHA, 10-6-0) The Tigers split their weekend series with the Saint Cloud State Huskies (3-1 W, 3-4 O.T. L). This weekend the Tigers travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota to play the Gophers.

5.  Nebraska-Omaha – (8-5-3 WCHA, 11-9-4) The Mavericks split with top ranked Minnesota Duluth this past weekend in Omaha, Nebraska (2-6 L, 3-1 W). The Mavericks will travel to play the Purple Mavericks of Minnesota State University Minnesota.

6.  North Dakota – (8-8-0, 12-9-2) The University of North Dakota split with Minnesota this past weekend (2-1 W, 6-2 L). This weekend, North Dakota travels to Saint Cloud to play their rival the SCSU Huskies. The University of North Dakota has been hit by the Injury Ninja and the following players are “currently out” of the line up for UND, Rocco Grimaldi (knee), Derek Forbort (unknown), Brendan O'Donnell(shoulder)and Derek Rodwell (shoulder, season ending).

7.  Michigan Tech – (8-7-1 WCHA, 11-11-1) The Michigan Tech Huskies swept the hapless University of Anchorage Alaska Seawolves (6-2, 6-4) in Houghton, Michigan.  This weekend the Michigan Tec Huskies entertain their cross state rivals from Northern Michigan.

8. St. Cloud State – (6-7-3 WCHA, 9-11-4) The Huskies split their weekend series with the Colorado College Tigers (1-3 L, 4-3 O.T. W). The Huskies entertain the North Dakota this weekend at the National Hockey Center.

9. Wisconsin – (5-9-2 WCHA, 10-10-2) The Wisconsin Badgers have an impressive 9-4-1 record at home and after splitting with Minnesota State Mankato on the road this past weekend, the Badgers now have an unimpressive 1-6-1 record away from the Kohl Center. With the weekend split in Mankato, the Badgers have never swept the Minnesota State Mavericks in Mankato. This weekend the Badgers entertain the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves.

10. Bemidji State – (5-9-2 WCHA, 11-11-2) The Beavers were swept by Denver University in Denver (3-6 L, 2-3 L).  The Beavers are off this weekend.

12.  Minnesota State – (3-12-1 WCHA, 7-16-1) The Minnesota State Mavericks split their series with the Wisconsin Badgers (0-4 L, 3-0 W). With the win the Mavericks broke a 10 game winless streak in WCHA play, dating back to November 11th, 2011. Extending a streak; after this weekend’s split against the Badgers, the Mavericks have never been swept by Wisconsin Badgers in Mankato, Minnesota. This weekend the Mavericks entertain the Red Mavericks from Nebraska Omaha at the Verizon Wireless Center

Goon's WCHA Power Rankings 1/9/2012

This is my weekly WCHA Power Rankings for INSIDE HOCKEYZack Friedli from Hockey State of Mind and I will be doing the weekly WCHA Power Rankings.

1.  Minnesota Duluth – (10-2-2 WCHA, 14-3-3) The Bulldogs swept future NCHC foe Western Michigan University (4-1, 5-2) in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Bulldogs travel to Omaha, Nebraska to play the UNO Mavericks.

2. Minnesota – (11-3-0 WCHA, 15-7-1) Minnesota lost to Notre Dame (1-4) in the Hall of Fame on Saturday night. I wouldn’t be an understatement to say that the Gophers looked out of sync and unimpressive. Since sweeping North Dakota on November 5th, 2011 Minnesota has a record of 6-6-1. Minnesota travels to Grand Fork, ND to play UND this weekend.

3.  Nebraska-Omaha – (7-4-3 WCHA, 10-8-4) The Mavericks played Quinnipiac Bobcats this past weekend in Omaha, Nebraska (2-2 T and 4-1 W). The Mavericks entertain the high flying UMD Bulldogs this weekend.

4. Denver – (6-5-3 WCHA, 11-8-3) We keep hearing about how good the Denver Pioneers are going to be when they get their injured payers back, Beau Bennett (wrist), John Ryder (knee) David Makowski (unknown) Sam Brittain (knee) are all out with injuries; so one might say that the Pioneers are still a work in progress, however, the time is ticking on the clock. The Pioneers split with the lowly University of Huntsville Chargers this past weekend in Denver (2-3 L and 5-2 W). This weekend the Pioneers entertain the Bemidji State Beavers

4. North Dakota – (7-7-0, 11-8-2) The University of North Dakota beat Clarkson University 3-1 in Winnipeg Manitoba at the U.S. College Hockey Classic. It would be an understatement if I said that the University of North Dakota has been hit by the Injury Ninja and the following players are currently out of the line up for UND;  Corban Knight (lower body), Rocco Grimaldi (knee), Derek Forbort (unknown) and Derek Rodwell (shoulder, season ending).

6.  Colorado College – (12-7-1 WCHA, 9-5-0) The Tigers are a hard team to figure out, and this past weekend the Tigers got their highly talented sophomore forward Jaden Schwartz back from the Canadian WJC team. In what could be classified as a puzzling move, the Tigers scratched Schwartz from the line up for Friday night’s game. Schwartz returned to the line up on Saturday night and he would help lead the Tigers to a (3-3) tie against the Cornell Big Red. This weekend the Colorado College Tigers entertain the Saint Cloud State Huskies.

7.  Michigan Tech – (6-7-1 WCHA, 9-11-1) The Michigan Tech Huskies were idle this past weekend after being swept the weekend before in the Great Lakes Invitational (1-3 L, 1-2 L). The Huskies have lost four straight games and hope to get back to their winning says as they entertain the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves in Houghton Michigan.

7.  Bemidji State – (5-7-2 WCHA, 11-9-2) The Beavers Swept Bowling Green State University last weekend (4-1 W, 2-1 W). Since the Beavers beat UND (1-0) on the 20th of November the Beavers have gone an impressive (7-1-1) and are unbeaten in the last five games (5-0-0).

9. St. Cloud State – (5-6-3 WCHA, 8-10-4) The Huskies were off this past weekend and travel to Colorado Springs Colorado to play the high octane Tigers. Since the Huskies beat the Minnesota Gophers (4-3) in Saint Cloud on November 18th, the Huskies have gone a lack luster (3-5-2).

10. Wisconsin – (4-8-2 WCHA, 9-9-2) The Wisconsin Badgers have ann impressive 9-4-1 record at home and after sweeping AHA foe cupcake RIT (6-3 W, 2-1 W). This weekend the Badgers travel to Mankato Minnesota to play the last place Minnesota State Mavericks. On paper you would think this is going to be an automatic two wins for the Badgers. Maybe not; the Badgers are an unimpressive 0-5-1 on the road and hope to pick up their first two wins at Mankato half way through the month of January.  Until the Badgers can start winning games on the road they will remain in the bottom rung of the WCHA standings and rankings.

11. Alaska-Anchorage – (3-10-1 WCHA, 6-10-2) The Seawolves haven’t played in an actual game since the 10th of December, 2011 when they split with the C.C. Tigers (6-3 W, 3-4 L) so the Seawolves could be a little rusty when they travel to Houghton Michigan to play the Michigan Tec Huskies.

12.  Minnesota State – (2-11-1 WCHA, 6-15-1) The Minnesota State Mavericks split their series with the Saint Lawrence University Saints (3-4 L, 3-1W) in Canton, New York this past weekend. The Mavericks entertain the Wisconsin Badgers this weekend at the Verizon  Wireless Center
