Breaking down the Minnesota vs. North Dakota Rivalry

Fighting Sioux

This weekend, is the last regular season WCHA conference matchup between the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers and the University of North Dakota.

After this season, both teams will go their separate ways due to re-alignment, and it looks like it could be four years before the two teams play again in a regular season series.
General consensus is that North Dakota versus Minnesota series is one of the most storied rivalries in all of college hockey. Like I mentioned in the previous paragraph, this could be the last meeting for a while, unless, the two teams meet again in this year’s WCHA playoff and or NCAA playoffs in the future.
That could happen, based on recent history.
A lot of people that I have talked to aren’t very happy with the rivalry going dormant for a while. Personally, I don’t believe the spin coming out of the University of Minnesota why the University of Minnesota isn’t playing North Dakota. It’s a shame the two teams won’t be playing after this weekend for at least for four years.
If you ask the players from the two teams they will tell you that they like playing in this rivalry.
UND senior forward Danny Kristo who is originally from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, had this to say on playing against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
“It’s such a great rivalry for college hockey,” Kristo said. “I think I am confident enough to say that both schools are power houses for college hockey. I think everyone looks forward to that game every single year and those series every single year. Fans included. I just think it’s kind of a downer. Over the next four years – I feel bad for some of the young guys that are committed here and guys that are committed at Minnesota that aren’t going to get to take part in that rivalry. Which is unfortunate, you know, leagues are changing, times are changing, so we really can’t do anything about it. Hopefully, four years from now, all the fans will still be involved in the rivalry. So hopefully, it will still be going strong.”
The Gopher players feel strongly about the rivalry as well. This is what Gopher forward Zach Budish had to say about playing against UND.
“I think there is always a little extra emotion when you’re playing North Dakota just because of the rivalry,” Budish said. “Most of the guys on our team grew up watching the Gophers and North Dakota play every year. It’s been a lot of back and forth, it’s been pretty even. In my three years here, I think we’re pretty much .500 against them and we’ve played them 15 times or so over the last three seasons. It will definitely be intense and we’ll expect two hard fought games.”
The fans will also miss the rivalry was well. I posed the question to a few of the Gophers fans that I converse with on a regular basis and this is some of the things that they like about the storied rivalry.
Billy Pederson, my neighbor that is a Gopher hockey fan had this to say. “I like the intensity this series brings on and off the ice. There is no other series that keeps me at the edge of my seat from the drop of the puck. For me, it’s because the hockey played between these two is remarkable and rivalry is so important to people in this area. “Gopher-Sioux” week has always been anticipated from the beginning of each season. Good natured ribbing on both sides lasts the whole season, and when it comes to game time, we all want bragging rights.”
Peterson also said, “I have huge respect for both programs. There have been great players on both sides of the ice for as far back as I can remember and that means a lot to us who live in this hockey-crazed area. To have this go away for however long it is, I know I won’t be the only person upset that this rivalry is “taking a break”. I don’t like it at all.”
Keith Westerhoff, a Gopher hockey fan that I come to know from going to the Final Five, had this to say about the rivalry, ”What I like: I mark this series down on the calendar as soon as the schedule comes out, it’s the one series of the year that I get the most pumped up for. I like that one team could be doing very well and the other not so well, but come the games it does not matter, any team can win on any given night. Despite the “incidents” that have happened over the years it just adds to the excitement, you always wait for something to top it. The trash talking between fan bases on the boards the week of is always entertaining as well.”
Keith went on to say, “What I’ll miss: The history obviously, you look at the games and battles these two teams have had over the years and it’s a shame that it will be coming to an end. So many great players have donned the jersey for both teams over the years, guys that grew up together and played together as kids and now battling against each other! This is easily in my mind the biggest rivalry in all of college hockey, but yet I see so many Gopher fans that are glad this rivalry is coming to an end, I just have to shake my head in disgust. I think most of all I’ll just miss the WCHA Final Five…….because most of the time it was Gopher fans and Sioux fans that always filled the place up, the trash talking walking to and from the arenas and just taking a lap around the concourse was always pretty awesome.
Jerred Kline, Minnesota Gophers fan. “Both teams go balls to the wall no matter where they are ranking in the polls and WCHA. Fan base trash talk to see how far in the past each fan base will go back in history. It is the Best Rivalry in college hockey hands down. BC vs. BU not even a close second.
The players: they are probably best buds off the ice and off season, but when they are on the ice it is on and they can’t stand each other. Not even in the handshake line (Well Ben Blood and Finley/Wheeler at least)
Here is what one of my Twitter followers @scofarr , a UND fan, had to say about the rivalry.
I’m going to miss the banter back and forth with Gopher friends, a jacked up REA on a Friday night during introductions, [Jeff] Dubay ripping UND, the intense action on the ice, the shenanigans and scrums, and the endless argument about the which program is better. It’s really a shame that this is ending. Especially when alums on both sides think it should continue every year, including UM godfather of hockey, Lou Nanne.
This is what former Golden Gophers forward/defenseman Andy Brink had to say about the UND versus UMN series taking a break and whether he thought it was a bad decision to not continue the rivalry?
It’s hard to imagine UND and the Gophers not playing. It’s been such a good rivalry and very even. Being only 5 hours away from each other and both programs always being so good, obviously, it’s not good that they are not playing a series every year.”
Yesterday, during media day, this is what UND head coach Dave Hakstol had to say about the historic rivalry between the two teams.
“I love the series,” Hakstol said. “It brings the very best out of everybody.  It’s challenges everybody to be at their best. It brings a ton of passion on both sides. For sure that carries over to the fans on both sides. That’s what it should be all about in a rivalry series.”
This is what UND defenseman Joe Gleason formerly of Edina, Minnesota had to say on the rivalry between the Minnesota and the North Dakota.
“I wouldn’t have been a fan of North Dakota if they didn’t have come to Minnesota,” Gleason said. “As a kid growing up, that’s how I got to know who North Dakota was. That’s when I really started loving North Dakota. That was when my dad first brought me to a game; he said you have to watch this team play. It’s an unbelievable rivalry. It’s really cool to see. That’s when I really kind of fell in love with North Dakota as a kid, when they came to Mariucci [Arena]. So, I think that’s really unfortunate, for not just the guys here, but the kids coming up through the game that are still peewees, bantams and high schoolers. It’s a great game to watch. So, hopefully they can figure this out.”
Lastly, the Minnesota and North Dakota rivalry will always be a passionate and an emotional series for both sides involved.  When I see fans on either side say, ‘I won’t miss watching my team playing them’ I question whether these fans “truly” understand this series.
When these two team play, records and national rankings mean nothing – I have seen the Gophers ride into town on very long unbeaten streaks – only to watch them leave town with their tails between their legs. I can also remember UND being the better team, only to have Minnesota sweep them. This is the perfect series where stuff happens.
It’s a shame that this historic and heated rivalry can’t go forward at least for the next four years. However, there are many memories from games past that will have to keep the flame lit until these two teams meet again in the future.

Edit: Kristo's sick goal... Video highlights.

Here are the highlights of tonight's game. An amazing goal by Danny Kristo.

Looking at the video again, it looks like UND was finally on the receiving end of a call that should have gone the other way. When I first saw the video on line, it didn't have the angel this video did. It's obvious tonight that UND befitted from a call that should have gone the other way.

If I had to guess, it looks like the ref lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle, like they're supposed to; when actually the puck was not frozen. That being said, UND wins the game when their goalie was their best player. Game two tomorrow night.

s/t to pass it off of the goalie, who had this posted this on Sioux Sports tonight. This goal is a thing of beauty.

Danny Kristo Red Baron WCHA Offensive Player of the Week

MADISON, Wis. – Veteran University of North Dakota forward Danny Kristo, who produced three goals and five points and earned First and Second Star of the Game honors while helping his team earn three of four points over visiting conference rival Minnesota Duluth last weekend, is the Red Baron® WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Nov. 20.

A 5-11, 185-pound senior from Eden Prairie, Minn., Kristo opened the two-game series with a pair of goals from his left wing position last Friday (Nov. 16) night at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks to earn First Star of the Game honors, scoring at 1:39 of the second period to give UND a 2-1 lead and then again at 10:39 to even the score at 3-3 as the two teams played to a 4-4 (ot) tie. Then on Saturday (Nov. 17) evening, Kristo moved over to right wing and was named the Second Star of the Game, scoring UND’s first goal of the game and adding two assists in a 4-3 overtime win over the Bulldogs. He set up linemate Mark MacMillan for both the game-tying (5:53 of the third period) and game-winning goals (4:26 of overtime) on highlight-reel plays and was named the Second Star of the Game. In addition to his five points in the series, Kristo also fired nine shots on goal and earned a +2 plus/minus rating.

A draftee of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens, Kristo has now reached the scoresheet in all but one of his eight games this season and leads the North Dakota team with 12 points (4g, 8a).

Also nominated: Jordan George, F, BSU; William Rapuzzi, F, CC; Chris Knowlton, F, DU; Alex Petan, F, MTU.

UND and UMD gut out hard fought 4-4 tie

Western Collegiate Hockey Association logo
Western Collegiate Hockey Association logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Grand Forks, ND – This past week at the Wednesday press conference University of North Dakota head coach Dave Hakstol said, “records mean nothing this time of year.” While the UMD Bulldogs came into the game with a 2-5-1 record overall and 0-3-1 WCHA – good for last place in the WCHA – the Bulldogs didn’t play like a team that was in 12th place.
They played more like a team that was at the top half of the standings and were the aggressors all game lone.
The Bulldogs came out of the gates hard in the first period and put a tenacious forecheck on the Green and White. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Bulldogs has UND on their heels early and were a miserable team to play against.
That hard work would pay off for the Bulldogs as they would take an early lead with a goal from senior forward Mike Seidel at the 03:49 mark of the first period.
The opportunistic Seidel would take a UND turnover deep in the UND defensive zone and deposited the puck in the UND net past Clark Saunders.
UND would answer the UMD goal at the 13:49 mark of the first period with a goal by senior defenseman Andrew MacWilliam – the burly defenseman teed up a shot from the blue line and launched a missile that blew by the UMD goalie Aaron Crandall.
That was all of the scoring in the first period. UMD outshot UND 15-11.
The second period would turn into a track meet for both teams as UND senior forward Danny Kristo would book end two goals by UMD freshman Austin Farley.   UMD would again outshoot UND 14-13 in the second period.
You see a pattern developing here?
Both teams exchanged goals in the third period. At the 12:47 mark of the third period freshman forward Rocco Grimaldi sniped a beautiful goal to give UND a short lived 4-3 lead. That lead lasted one minute and 20 second.
At the 14:08 of the third period, UMD defenseman Drew Olson scored a nice goal from the point that Clarke Saunders didn’t see – tie game once again.  UMD would get the better of the chances in the third period but neither team would dent the twine again and the game with end in a hard fought 4-4 tie.
Tonight, UND gave up 46 shots on goal – that is the most shots on goal that UND has given up in seven seasons of hockey. Coach Hakstol didn’t see that all that pleased about that stat either but was quick to credit UMD’s effort.
“Yeah that’s too many to give up in our own building.” Hakstol said. “They worked awful hard for them – they played hard through 60 minutes – so did we. We were a little too sporadic at times and I thought that soaked away some of our momentum at different times.  But it was a really hard fought back and forth hockey game.”
Not only was UND outshot by a pretty big margin during the game, UND was also outshot 17-7 in the third period. Coach Hakstol didn’t seem to be all that pleased with giving up 17 shots in the third period.
“We don’t want to give away 17 shots in the third period too often,” Hakstol said.
You have to give credit where credit is due, Bulldogs utilized their aggressive forecheck and speed to beat UND at their own game all night long. As the game wore on, UMD didn’t back off either and the Bulldogs keep attacking and counter attacking. In the end it was a hard fought ugly game and maybe a tie was an appropriate ending. Senior forward Danny Kristo  also thought UMD played well.
“Duluth played well,” Kristo said. They came at us hard. They definitely got a lot of puck to the net we got to shape up our defensive zone a little bit; we gave up a lot of shots tonight. It was a hard fought game and we got the rubber match tomorrow.”
The same two teams face off tomorrow night at 7:07pm CT.

Kristo Dive?

If you haven't seen this, UND's Danny Kristo was assessed a 2 minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for diving at the 19:52 mark of the second period of Saturday night's game against the SCSU Huskies. Also receiving a two minute minor penalty, was SCSU Husky forward David Morley. After the period was over, UND head coach Dave Hakstol was given a two minute penalty after giving the on ice officials an ear full. As you can see by the video, coach Hakstol was less than pleased.

Also, if you listen to the announcers, you can see what they thought of the call as well. Former SCSU Husky forward Mark Parish was also a professional hockey player in the NHL so definitely knows the game of hockey.

11/10 Post Game Wrapup: SCSU 5, UND 2 (RW77)

This was night and day from yesterday.  The Huskies looked pretty good but fairly flat on Friday.  Tonight, they came out roaring in the first period and UND, honestly, was lucky to escape the first period knotted at one.

The big calls in the first period were the no-goal on Stephane Pattyn and the Checking from Behind on Schmaltz.  First, the no-goal.  I actually got the webcast tonight and I saw it.  What I saw was one of the most incredible saves I've ever seen.  No one could believe that Pattyn's open net shot didn't go in except Farragher and the goal judge.  They did a lengthy review and judged it no goal.  I saw the replays and the call was 100% correct.

13 seconds from the end of the period, UND Freshman Jordan Schmaltz checked Drew Leblanc from behind into the sideboards.  The hit was not very violent and Leblanc's head did not hit the boards very hard (it appeared to hit forearm first).  Nevertheless, the refs HAD to call it as checking from behind.  The ironic part is that Don Adam called the penalty that he played a key role in creating.

Second Period and Third Period

The second period saw one of the worst periods of UND hockey this season.  It started out well, with UND killing off the five minute major.  However, after that, Drew Leblanc scored two straight goals and UND started a parade to the box culminating with Coach Hakstol getting a 2 minute minor for misconduct for trying to talk to Don Adam after the period had ended.  This probably resulted from a rather dubious embellishment call on Danny Kristo after being tripped.

The Third period only differed from the second period by the fact that the scoreboard said the number "3" where the number "2" was in the second period.  SCSU was all over the ice with crisp passing and just unlucky bounces and some timely saves by Saunders preventing it becoming a laugher.  It was even close until 6 minutes into the third when Garrett Milan (SCSU) got a rather weak goal on Saunders.  We did try a little bit but no good came of it. With 2:30 left in the game, Saunders let a point shot get past him and that's all she wrote.

The Goaltending

Again, Roller Coaster... sortof.  If you are Ryan Farragher, then it was a roller coaster that never seemed to go down the slope.  It just climbed the hill and stayed at the top.  Saunders really had a bad night for the most part..  The first goal SCSU scored he didn't see.  The third goal was a tic tac toe Power Play goal.  The final goal was a point shot.  Can't blame him much for those.  However, the second and the fourth goals were WEAK.  On the second goal, the puck came right to him after making two great saves and he paddled the puck right to Leblanc's stick blade.  Goal.  The fourth went five hole and just seemed to slowly inch past the red line.

I'm also not sure if Gothberg would have done any better.  I don't blame Hakstol for going with the hot hand, but just like Saturday vs. BU, UND lost this game because they didn't play solid fundamental hockey for 60 minutes.  The thing that made it worse than the BU loss is that UND never even had one solid period of good hockey tonight.  They played ok in the first and got worse and worse as the game progressed.

So I guess Saunders played pretty well, and even Saunders at his best wouldn't have prevented UND from losing, but a game going into the end of the 3rd period down 3-2 looks much differently than entering the final minute down 5-2.

The officiating

Roller coaster city.  They actually were doing a pretty decent job until the second period when they started missing calls and making bad calls.  The first call I recall was when they missed a pretty overt slashing call that Corbin Knight committed on Ethan Prow.  They made up for it by calling a weak version of it on Mark MacMillan.  He stick checked an SCSU player and the player waited a full second before dropping the stick.  No matter.  The next thing you know, Danny Kristo gets tripped and gets called for embellishment when he did not act like he was shot.  He slid along the ice before getting up and finding out he's sitting two.  The third period starts and UND actually does legitimately slash an SCSU stick and no call.  What awful calling.

Why UND lost

Top 3 reasons:
1.  Sloppy passing.  UND cannot pass even to open guys.  SCSU can.  It was AMAZING to watch.  It got to the point where SCSU didn't even have to clog the lanes, UND did it for them!  I cannot remember worse passing.  They couldn't set anything up because UND kept missing the puck.
2.  Races to the puck.  UND was out skated all night long.
3.  Corners.  SCSU won almost ALL the battles along the boards.

This was one of the worst played games UND has played this season.  I'm glad this seems anomalous because if it wasn't, UND is going to lose... A LOT.

The America One Webcast

This is the Webcast company SCSU went through for the game.  I'm not sure if it is NESN camera work or what but this webcast's quality was FAR FAR superior to that of the UND Webcast.  The oddity?  SCSU's commentators weren't as big of a homer than I thought they would.  The only negative is that they didn't do their legwork.  They never figured out how to pronounce our players' names (like Rowney's for example).

My 3 stars:

Third Star:  Joe Rehkamp (SCSU) - He wasn't talked about much during the game on the SCSU broadcast but he is credited with 3 assists on the night.  Not too shabby.

Second Star:  Ryan Farragher (SCSU) - Hard not to give him the first star.  He probably is 1a in this list.  He made some great saves including the best save of the season off of Pattyn's shot in the first period, but despite it looking otherwise, he wasn't really overtaxed in net tonight.

First Star:  Drew Leblanc (SCSU) - 2 goals 1 assist.  He was all over the place tonight.

Honorable Mentions:  Derek Forbort and Drake Caggiula (both acquitted themselves pretty well tonight), Nick Oliver (SCSU), Cory Thorson (SCSU)

EDIT:  I should add:  I am not saying the world is coming to an end.  Nor am I saying Fire Hakstol or that this team isn't special.  I'm saying this was one of the hardest games to watch because of how poorly we played and how much better I know we are capable of playing.

EDIT: The Sky is falling; not hardly...

A couple of things, I have reading the message boards this morning and obviously it hurts to see your favorite team lose a game where they had the lead with five minutes to go and looked like they were going to get the series sweep against the Terriers and let the lead slip away. Let’s also give credit where credit is due. BU is a very good hockey team and there is no shame splitting with them either.

Let’s not forget these numbers, UND is a traditionally slow starter that peaks during the second half of the season. The First column is the win total for Coach Hakstol before the Christmas break. The second column is Hakstol’s win total after the Christmas break.

2004-05: 13-7-2 (.636) - 12-8-3 (.587)
2005-06: 12-7-1 (.625) - 17-9-0 (.654)
2006-07: 7-10-1 (.417) - 17-4-4 (.760)
2007-08: 8-6-1 (.567) - 20-5-3 (.768)
2008-09: 9-8-1 (.528) - 15-7-3 (.660)
2009-10: 9-6-3 (.583) - 16-7-2 (.680)
2010-11: 13-5-2 (.700) - 19-4-1 (.813)
2011-12: 9-8-1 (.528) - 17-5-2 (.750)
2012-13: 3-2-1 (.583) - ?

Alaska Nanooks 2010 Hockey Intro Video

Brad Schlossman posted this video on the Wednesday Herald writers sports chat today. Since UND is going up to Fairbanks to play in the Brice Goal Rush Tourney, I thought I would post it on the blog because it's a very well done video, the University of Alaska Fairbanks used to play this video before their games during the 2010-11 season.

Shot charts from Friday's game UND vs USNDT U18

s/t Stats on Crack

One of the topics that popped up on last night’s game discussion was he shot total. While UND was outshot 2-1 by the USNDT 38-19 at no time did I think that UND was in danger of being beat nor did I think that they were being out played a lot of the shots were from the perimeter. UND did get into penalty trouble and was penalized eight times and gave up three power play goals.

UND goalie Clarke Saunders was very good last and made some great saves - Saunders made 20 saves in the first period.

I thought the past two weeks that Zane Gothberg has been a little shaky and has over played the puck at times. I also think that he will get better with practice. I do think that Saunders is the better of the two goalies right now and he will probably get the start on Friday.

My Three Stars of the game.

Rocco Grimaldi (2g-0a—2pts) showed us why he was worth the wait.
Corbin Knight (1g-2a—3pts) was very good in the faceoff circle 18-4.
Danny Kristo (1g-2a—3pts) played like a man possessed.
