He said what?

I guess I would expect more from a college hockey beat writer for a major newspaper that writes for a top WCHA team. The Pioneers are a major player in the national spotlight, but their beat writer acts like a writer for a college newspaper. I don't know, it just seems like most of his blog posts contain some sort of red meat to be thrown to the wolves. You would never see Brad Elliot Schlossman write something objectionable like that.
The Pios got an Anthony Maiani goal 8:59 into the second period to take a 3-0 lead in a truly ho-hum atmosphere at Magness Arena. The play-making Maiani, who was brilliant last weekend at North Dakota, has three points (two helpers). He has nine points (two goals) in his five-game point streak. The shots are 35-17 and DU has yet to be called for a non-coincidental penalty. But the Pios are just 1 of 5 on the power play. They failed to score on a 5-on-3 advantage for more than a minute. After trips to Wisconsin and North Dakota the past two weekends, the Pios are obviously having a tough time adjusting to an inferior foe, and the crowd of around 4,200 has yet to get its their money’s worth. Heard at the rink.

INCH had this blurb on their site. I think this sums things up pretty well. Time for the guys to bear down and go to work, no finger pointing, just hard work. Time for some deep self reflection. The fans well; we will worry about the Monday morning quarterbacking and pontifications.
“You can go two ways. You can start to get individualistic and point fingers at one another or you can pull together, do everything a little better and give a little more to your team and teammates. And that’s what we’ll do.”

North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol preached calm in his remarks to the press following his team’s 4-2 loss to Denver in Grand Forks Saturday. We’re sure the guys in the locker room are on the same page with the coach, but with the Fighting Sioux having a bye this weekend, there’s time for panic to ferment among NoDak fans

Going forward

The Fighting Sioux were swept at home for the first time since December 15th and 16th 2006 against the MTU Huskies. That’s a little over four years ago, breaking it down further, the Sioux were also swept the weekend before by the Wisconsin Badgers on the 8th and 9th of December 2006. In reading Mike Chambers blog he said that this was the first time UND was swept by anybody in three years. That is an impressive streak that was ended the Denver Pioneers. Time to start a new streak.

Not all is lost

This isn’t the first time a Sioux team has been swept by Denver only to have them go on and have a successful post season run; in 1997 the Sioux were swept in Denver the last series of the 1996-1997 season. Obviously the Sioux went on to win the NCAA title. I am not saying this will happen and the chances of this happening this season aren’t that great unless something drastically changes in a hurry. Not all is lost either, and it’s not outside the realm of possibility. There is a lot of balance and talent on this team, 11 players have 10 or more points. The Goaltending has to be better and the power play must start scoring again.

I think UND has hit a low spot in their season and I expect them to rebound in the coming weeks, they have a week off to get back to basics and right the ship. Last night I was watching the Sioux Sports Extra on WDAZ and Coach Hakstol was interview about what UND had to do going forward. Let me tell you that Coach Hakstol didn’t looked happy. The word pissed comes to mind.

Coach Hakstol talked about making some personnel changes on the power play and that there is a 50/50 chance that Brett Hextall will be back for the SCSU series. The return of Hextall would boost the Fighting Sioux in the right direction. I would also be willing to bet that this week in practice isn’t going to be all fun and games. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sioux have a very hard week of practice and I wouldn’t be surprised if the team was gassed a few times. I would be disappointed if they weren’t.

I also think that a hard paced intense two weeks of practice is what the Sioux need to get refocused and retool for the stretch run. I would be willing to bet that the Sioux coaching staff will put the guys through a grueling week and a half of practice working on the fundamentals and working on specials teams. The penalty kill is fine and ranked 8th nationally, but the power play lacks well: goals. I don’t think there will be much fooling around leading up the SCSU series.

Come off the ledge

I like many Sioux fans are concerned the way this season has gone. The Sioux were an unimpressive 4-4-2 in January and that isn’t going to win the Sioux any league championships. They are fighting just to get home ice and will have to probably go 6-2 or 5-3 get home ice.

If the playoffs started today the Sioux would probably travel to Colorado Springs to play the C.C. Tigers. Wouldn’t that be irony? UMD traveled to the Springs last season and then went on a roll and marched to the NCAA playoffs by beating C.C. in Colorado springs. The following weekend they went on to win the Final Five from the Thursday play in game. Again I am not suggesting that the Sioux would do this but the Sioux very well could win a playoff series on the road, C.C. has stumbled as of late winning only 3 games in the last 9 games and has a record of 3-6-0 during that time period.

Give DU credit

While this is a blog focused on the UND Fighting Sioux and I am not going to spend time pumping up other teams tires, you can check out the various team blogs from my links section and I will leave the tire pumping to the specific team fan blogs. If you want to read a blog that pumps DU tires you would want to read DG’s Let Go DU hockey blog. This isn't the site for the half eaten jelly donut.

I will give some credit to the DU Pioneers they are good hockey team with an All-American goalie that is red hot right now (not to be confused with hot or not). It’s not a given Marc Cheverie will keep playing like he has. Lets not be confused he is good, the kid has something like 6 shuts outs on the season and he is seeing the puck right now.

There could be a time where that puck gets smaller and starts going in. Sometimes the puck goes in and sometimes it doesn’t. Things are going to change for DU next season when they lose some major players like Rhett Rakhshani (17g-16a-33pt) graduation, Tyler Ruegsegger (13g-16a-29pts) graduation and possibly Joel Colborne (11g-15a-26pts) Boston Bruins.

If you look at DU’s stats that is about 50 percent of their goal scoring 41/81 and the Pioneers drop off pretty fast after their first line. Their first line spent a lot of time on the ice during the weekend series. Just saying that their time is right now. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Marc Cheverie sign a professional contract after this season, because his stock couldn’t be higher after this season.

Lastly the DU Pioneers never had to face a healthy Fighting Sioux line up. Chay Genoway who may not come back this season because of his concussion issues, never got to play against DU. Taking Chay Genoway out of the lineup is like taking Rhett Rakhshani out of the Denver line up. In the second series the Sioux were without Genoway and Hextall. That had an effect on the four games of this series. Also, the Denver Debacle probably cost the Sioux points, it also cost the refs a paycheck with a suspension. I have been told from multiple and credible sources that those officials were in fact suspended. The league will never probably acknowledge this or issue a statement but I have been told by multiple sources that it did happen.

All in and on board

Lastly, the season is not over by any means and I think we should hold off with the lynch mob till after the season. Things could be worse. I am in and I am not going anywhere. I will be there for the Saturday game in Saint Cloud for the second game of the Sioux and Huskies game.

Programing note: As some have noticed I have added another member to the team Redwing77 from Sioux sports will now be posting blog articles from time to time. This summer I had the pleasure of meeting him in person and played some golf with him. While might not always see eye to eye, he is a Redwings fan and I am a Bruins and Wild fan he will add an interesting perspective to this blog.

Fighting Sioux unimpressive in 4-2 defeat.

This should sum things up from last night pretty well. This weekend’s sweep at the hands of the Denver University Pioneers is unacceptable and down right depressing. The Fighting Sioux had their butts handed to them last night and looked like a bunch of boy playing men. Thirty minutes of hockey will not win you a game even against the last place team in the WCHA.

Cue the cute sports clichés, we didn’t play for 60 for minutes, we didn’t burry our chances, we didn't move our feet; we didn’t put the Pioneers away when we had them down 2-0 and on their heels. Blah, blah, blah, blah…
The home locker room in Ralph Engelstad Arena was full of frustration, disappointment and anger late Saturday night, consumed with a feeling that only two players inside of it have ever experienced.

For the first time in 37 months — a span of more than three years and 25 series — the UND men’s hockey team was swept at home after the University of Denver rallied for a 4-2 victory in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series finale.

Coupled with a 2-0 victory Friday night, the Pioneers became the first team since Dec. 16, 2006 to win back-to-back games here, snapping the WCHA’s longest streak without getting swept at home. [Grand Forks Herald]
This Fighting Sioux hockey team is, well, lacking leadership, focus and heart. It is what it is, UND is going to be on the road for the first round of the WCHA playoffs and will probably be golfing with the Gophers this spring during the NCAA tourney if the don't get their head out of their collective asses. This is not acceptable at the University of North Dakota. Right now this team isn’t worthy of wearing the proud Fighting Sioux warrior on the front of their jerseys. We are definitely not hostile or abusive. The Fighting Sioux hockey team went down without a fight.

Here is what our fearless leader coach Dave Hakstol had to say after this weekend's debacle at the Ralph.
“It doesn’t sit very well,” UND coach Dave Hakstol said. “It has to be something that’s a real slap in the face and pushes you in the right direction. You can go two ways. You can start to get individualistic and point fingers at one another or you can pull together, do everything a little better and give a little more to your team and teammates. And that’s what we’ll do.”

Since a sweep of Minnesota State-Mankato earlier this month, UND has just one win in its last six games, dropping to 13-10-5 overall and 8-9-3 in league play. UND’s record against teams ranked in this week’s national polls is now 3-8-2 and the Sioux dropped into a tie for 15th in the Pairwise Rankings.
What was good

The Fighting Sioux won the first half of the game, was ahead for half the game before the roof fell in on them. The Fighting Sioux came out and got pucks deep and fore checked, and chipped pucks out of the defensive zone. The Fighting Sioux were a text book example of what championship hockey looks like. Keep your opponent on their heals; attack and counter attack. Play smart when you don’t have the puck.

Senior forward Chris VandeVelde had another one of those break out games and scored some nice goals, Vandy’s second goal was a thing of beauty.

Sophomore forward Jason Gregoire had a solid game and was flying around all weekend.

Matt Frattin is starting to get back his game legs back and released a few bombs that just barely missed. I expect these will start going in soon. I would have to say that he has one of the harder shots that I have seen.

Freshman Danny Kristo is an awesome player but he needs to shoot the puck more, he has a laser for a shot. If this kid could get hot he could carry the team on his back.

What was not so good

You can not leave an opposition forward all alone in the slot like they did on two of the four DU goals, you're going to get killed. DU has some very talented forwards and if you let them shoot the puck unchallenged in the slot they are going to burry the puck. Half of their goals were scored in said manner.

Sophomore goalie Brad Eidsness lacks focus and needs to get back to the basics, the first things that comes to mind when I see him play is, not square to the shooter, does not cover the short side well, goes down too early. Maybe you should watch some game tape of Marc Cheverie, and see what a fundamentally sound goaltender looks like. Maybe Eidsness should consider employing his goalie coach. While I don’t fault him on most of the goals, you can not keep getting beat on the short side all of the time, his glove had is brutal.

From here on out

UND has games against SCSU (X2), UMD (X2), C.C. (2X), and MTU (2X), I figure that UND has got to go 6-2 or 5-3 in those remaining games to even have a chance to make home ice in the WCHA playoffs. All but one of those teams are sitting ahead of UND in the standings. From here on out there are no mulligan’s or give-me’s. The Fighting Sioux are currently sitting at 15th in the Pairwise rankings right now.

Saturday morning blah: Cleaning up the mess.

Short of scoring MORE goals I don't know what UND could have done last night, cue the proverbial hot goalie cliché, the Fighting Sioux gave up two quick goals and DU did exactly what Cornell did last Friday night they went into a defensive shell and sat on the lead, they chipped the pucks out and collapsed around their net. It’s almost as if they watched the game film of last Friday’s game between he Big Red and the Fighting Sioux.

On the first goal Dell stopped the first two shots and was beat when the defense failed to pick up the rebound, third shot was in the net. The first and second shot were tough saves as well. Hockey is a team game and they came out flat in the first 3:18 of the game and it cost them. The second goal wasn’t so good; it was your basic five hole.

I have to admit that I am not excited about the current state of the Fighting Sioux hockey team, they have went an unimpressive 1-3-1 in their last five games, however, I believe their record does not tell the whole story. The Fighting Sioux have also played some pretty good hockey during that time frame, that have also ran into three solid goaltending efforts in those three losses.

In the defensive zone of the ice the Fighting Sioux have limited the opposition's shot totals. The Sioux limited the Gophers to 23 shots in the 5-1 loss, against Cornell they limited the Big Red to 31 shots on the weekend and last night the Pioneers were only able to get 20 shots on net. That is good defense, statistically.

During the last three games the Fighting Sioux have only give up four goals. Last night during the second period the Fighting Sioux out shot DU 15-2, and just could put anything past Chevy. What do you do? Sioux7 says that you go out and run over the goalie to start the game. I personally wouldn't recommend that option, unless you want to start a Donnybrook. When Marc Cheverie is on he is a pretty goalie, it is what it is.

Like Tim Hennessey said during the post game comments that eventually they are going to start going in and someone is going to get plastered by this team. [click to the post game]

NCAA Round Up: BSU Beavers whoop the UMD Bulldogs 4-1.

All season long I have been telling people that the Bemidji State University Beavers are a good hockey team and they are legit. I have posters repeatedly telling me that BSU is over rated and hasn’t played anyone or anybody. I have told that BSU has a schedule full of cup cakes.

I can refute that argument and say that these people don’t know what they are talking about, in regards to BSU hockey. Bemidji State has a very good coach in Tom Serratore and he has his team well prepared and ready to play when the puck drops. Being in the CHA the Beavers coaching staff works very hard recruiting their players and has gotten the most out of their players. Within moving to the WCHA and having a new arena they will be able to compete with the other WCHA teams on a more even footing.

This season I have been called delusional for saying that the Beavers would whoop that Bulldog ass Friday night in Bemidji and they did. I was supposed to go to last night game but the weather didn’t permit me from going to the game, apparently I made the right decision. I wish I could have seen the 4-1 dismantling that happened last night. A friend of mine called me up after the game and said it wasn't even close.

So to the people that keep telling me that BSU is no good, overrated, haven’t played anyone and is undeserving of their ranking what else do the Bemidji State University Beavers have to do to make you change your mind? I mean seriously, in the calendar year BSU has beaten Miami, Notre Dame (last spring), Cornell (last spring), Air Force (x2) Northern Michigan, Minnesota and now UMD. Oh by the way NMU beat UMD. I also included Air Force because some thought they were so good last season. The AHA has an unimpressive record (0-6-1)against the CHA this season.

Here are some of the comments that one certain person has put on my blog this season. This fan should be thankful the Beavers aren't playing the Huskies this season. This is also a fan of the SCSU Huskies who have never won an NCAA division one hockey game. The Beavers have more wins in the NCAA tourney than their team. Please tell me again who is overrated? Just for the record the UMD Bulldogs are a good hockey team too.

WCHAdominates said...
I have not seen the Beavers play in person or on tv at all this season, and there's good chance that won't happen unless they qualify for the NCAA tournament. While it may be true that they play a race horse style of hockey (which is also known as fire wagon hockey, up and down, etc) I find it extremely difficult to beliece that Niagara offers much resistance to it in any manner. It's like a single A high school team playing a double AA high school team: clearly there is a separable difference in talent and team quality. As long as they don't lose to the cup cakes they keep playing and go about .500 against the decent teams, they're going to put good pairwise rankings and a high spot in the poll. You failed to mention that they also lose one night later to lowly Ohio State after beating Miami. That clearly shows they're win over the Redhacks means almost nothing. Throwing every cup cake win out, they are 4-2 thus far against N. Michigan, Minnesota, Miami, and Ohio State. Those are the only ones that mean anything.
Here is another gem. Just for the Record RMU was the same team that beat Miami twice.
WCHAdominates said...
Yes, the rest of the country will finally see how highly over ranked the Beavers are after beating up on Alabama Huntsville, Air Force, Northern Michigan, and Robert Morris. I don't know if if I've ever seen a team so over rated in the polls than Bemidji State has been this season. They have one decent win all season and they're ranked #6 in the country with 2 first place votes. Gimme a break!

Does this sound familiar?

I saw a link to this article over on Maverick Puck. Sound Familier? Seems like the UNO Mavericks are having some of the same issues.
“We’re real close,” UNO coach Dean Blais said of his squad. “But we can’t be satisfied with just being close. We’ve got to be team-hungry. We’ve got to do everything a little bit better in practice. We’ve got to be better on the power play, and we’ve just got to be a little bit better in everything we do.”

Gophers 5 Sioux 1

I think this blurb from the Fighting Sioux.com sums tonight game pretty well. Not the Fighting Sioux's night or weekend. Kind of a low point of the season.
MINNEAPOLIS--Minnesota scored three goals in the final 5:09 of the second period, including a pair of goals seven seconds apart, en route to a 5-1 win over the fourth-ranked Fighting Sioux tonight in front of the second-largest crowd in Mariucci Arena history.
The Sioux ran into the "hot goalie" tonight, seems like the Fighting Sioux run into a hot goalie each and every weekend. The Sioux really didn’t play all that bad they put 35 shots on the Gophers net tonight and could only sneak a meaningless goal by in the third period. The Sioux killed themselves with stupid penalties at inopportune times. Players have to stop taking knuckle headed penalties in key points of the game.

The defenseman have to be more smart with the puck, turnovers kill this team each and every week. Chip the puck out of the zone. Don’t count on your goaltender to bail you out, because the goaltending have been absolutely brutal this season. I hate to bag on the goaltender but In my humble opinion I believe that goaltending is the weakest link on this team. Brad Eidseness has to be better if this team is going to win. I don’ t understand it, Eidness stinks up the joint and yet coach Hakstol keeps going back to him. Only think I can figure is that Dell must be hurt or he is not doing well in practice I don’t know what else it could be. Seriously, I wonder why he doesn’t at least get a chance to play, when the starter has stunk up the joint, like he did tonight.

All good teams are back stopped by great goaltenders, unless you can score goals and put teams away. Not this team. Reviewing the game tape in my mind, the first goal was questionable, defense didn't pick up the man. Forward went to the net unchallenged. The second goal, Brad had no clue where the puck was, didn't even see it. On the third goal defense should have been sued for non-support, same with the fourth. On the fifth and final goal, this was grounds for being pulled from the game and sent to the showers. Disgusting effort.

Second Achilles heel this weekend was the power play; UND was 0/9 on the power play this weekend that has to change. I hope finally the guys in that locker room realize that they need to have a team effort from everyone.

Sioux 3 Gophers 3

I never thought that I would beg to hear the Rug and Wooger on a Hockey broadcast but the Big Ten Networks crew they had for tonight's game was brutal, they didn't have a clue about the game of hockey. Seriously, if you broadcasting a hockey game you have to know the game of hockey. Listening to them was painful. Epic fail for the BTN broadcast crew, these guys were brutal and they get failing marks when it comes to conducting a hockey broadcast. I expect more from the Big Ten Network than this. When Kristo was chopped into the boards by Leddy, that was not a dive, Leddy should have been given a five minute major for his efforts.

Sister kissing in Minneapolis

I thought the Sioux and the Gophers were pretty equal in their play tonight. For the Fighting Sioux I thought their biggest problem was turnovers and the Sioux failed to get puck deep at crucial times. The two goals by Danny Kristo was amazing, the first goal was a laser.

Tomorrow night I think it is imperative that the Sioux defenseman cannot allow a player to just walk in and shoot the puck on net he has to be challenged but the defenseman, everyone needs to carry out their assignments. If you can’t get the puck out of the zone by carrying it out of the ice it must be shot out of the zone.

Tonight while watching the broadcast tonight was one of the few nights that I saw Dave Hakstol show any emotion on the bench, most of the times Coach Hakstol is really stoic and subdued on the bench. There were a few times tonight that I saw him get disgusted with his teams play on the ice, one time I saw him point to the bench in front of him and mouth this is where you’re going to be if you do that again. While I am not disappointed with a tie I know they can do better.

The Miami Swoon.

Here is an article I wrote yesterday for my realclearsports.com blog

The Miami University RedHawks is a good hockey team went all the way to the Frozen Four last season. The RedHakws played in the final game before losing to the Boston University Terriers in the Championship game. Most teams including championshiop teams go through rough patches but the Miami University RedHawks 13-4-5 seem to fall off right after the Christmas holiday break. This year seems to be starting out the same way.

A Look at the "Rico Swoon" (through the first ten games, post-holiday break)

1999-2000: 4-5-1
2000-2001: 6-4-0
2001-2002: 3-6-1
2002-2003: 3-6-1
2003-2004: 7-2-1 (NCAA Participant)
2004-2005: 5-4-1
2005-2006: 6-3-1 (CCHA Champions, NCAA Participant)
2006-2007: 3-4-3 (NCAA Participant)
2007-2008: 7-2-1 (NCAA Participant)
2008-2009: 4-5-1 (NCAA Championship Game)
2009-2010: 0-2 "?"
[The Brother Hood]
The RedHawks started the second half of this season getting swept by the CHA's RMU Colonials 5-12-3. I believe that the Miami RedHawks are going to be very happy to see the CHA get disbanded after this season because the RedHawks are 0-3 in nonconference games against the CHA this season. That being said the Miami RedHawks are still sitting pretty even after laying an egg this past weekend. Check out this blog post; talk abut blasting your favorite team.

BOTTOM LINE: Miami has had some embarrassing losses in previous seasons, but this weekend series may top them all. Robert Morris hadn't won a game since Nov. 13, and the RedHawks made this team look like the 1991-92 Pittsburgh Penguins.

Miami's new offensive strategy of pass-and-redirect-pass-to-the-defense worked to perfection on Sunday, squelching every chance the RedHawks had to gain the attacking zone. I can't remember Miami completing consecutive passes on the transition, and a team this talented should never have to resort to playing dump-and-chase on the power play.

There's absolutely no excuse to lose one of two, much less two, against a team that has one or two semi-talented skaters at best and a goalie who regularly floats 20 feet out of the crease for no reason.

And who decided four weeks off would be a good thing for Miami, considering its history? I realize the Ohio Hockey Classic is defunct and the team had four off weeks in its CCHA schedule, which it couldn't help, but seriously, the RedHawks couldn't get another weekend series in?
First thing I would tell this guy is get off the ledge. Talk about disrepecting your opponent after they have beaten your team twice. Seriously! After reading this post you would have thought that the Miami RedHawks were a bunch of talentless hacks sitting at the bottom of the CCHA and in danger of missing the NCAA tourney. Not so fast, Miami (10-1-3 and 13-4-5) is sitting second in the Pairwise rankings (which mimic the NCAA tourney selection) and tied for the lead in the CCHA with the Ferris State Bulldogs (10-2-2 and 16-4-2) with 34 points. Miami has some mojo even with the loss and can probably miss their conference tourney and still be a number one seed or high second seed in the NCAA tourney.

I have seen Miami play twice in person this season and they are the real deal, they are big, fast and buy into a defensive system. The RedHawks are coached by former RedHawk Enrico Blais who had an impressive 223-154-37 record. They may have lost a couple of game to an opponent that they should have beaten, there is still a lot of season left and no reason to get excited just yet.

Classic quote by the UAA Coach.

Check out this classic quote by University of Alaska Anchorage head coach Dave Shyiak on DU getting their share of the favorable calls from the refs.
“I thought it was a great series. There wasn’t much difference between the first place team versus the ninth,” Shyiak said. “After not playing for more than a month (Dec. 5), I thought our guys played great and deserved better fate. I thought penalties caught up to us, but when you’re a first-place team and you’re in their home barn, they’re going to get the calls, and they got several calls tonight.” [Denver Post Hockey Blog]
As a Sioux fan I can feel your pain Dave. I wonder how long it will take before the other member schools in the WCHA will say enough is enough and request that the WCHA office be moved out of Denver University. There seems to be this perception that DU can do no wrong and gets all the favorable calls to go their way, their head coach just walks out on to the ice anytime he wants without any fear of punishment from the WCHA.

Kevin Gorg on Don Lucia.

This is probably not something the Don Lucia Haters will want to hear. There seems to be opinion that Don Lucia should be fired. FSN personality Kevin Gorg was asked by a fan on the Paul Allen show about Don Lucia's job status.

[Click to listen to the Paul Allen podcast] @1503 minutes left in the postcast.
Fan Question: Is Don Lucia done if his team doesn’t make the final five

Gorg’s reply: That’s his call; my take has alway been 100 percent that when Don Lucia wants to leave the University of Minnesota, Don Lucia will, he will not be fired, that will be his call.

So who will be the next coach of the Gophers?

Former UND hockey beat writer Virg Foss has a nice article about former Fighting Sioux hockey coach Dean Blais and his win at the WJC. With his win in the WJC there has been a lot of speculation on the Internet that former Fighting Sioux hockey Dean Blais would be a slam dunk as the next coach of the Minnesota Gophers, while this is not the crux of the article it is a point worth looking at.

Since the Gophers have struggled the last couple of seasons there has been this on going speculation that it’s time for a coaching change in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There have been a lot of die hard Gopher fans ready to throw their former Spencer Penrose award winning coach under the bus. Some of these fans calling for a change had been ardent supporters of Lucia in the past.

FSN Hockey personality Kevin Gorg recently said on KFAN 1130AM that Don Lucia would basically go at the time of his choosing and that Lucia is probably safe for now. I think Gorg is right. Breaking it down further; why would a university just up and fire a hockey coach that has won five MacNaughton Cups, three Broadmoor Trophies and two back-to-back NCAA championships in 2001-02 and 2002-03. Add to this impressive resume a Hobey Baker Memorial award winner in Jordan Leopold 2002. Heck the University of Minnesota just re-upped a football coach Tim Brewster that was just begging to be fired.
There’s great fear in Grand Forks that if the University of Minnesota makes a coaching change with its struggling program, Blais will return to his alma mater to coach the Gophers.

I’m not convinced the freedom-loving Blais would jump into that pressure cooker at his age. Blais cherishes the time to hunt and fish whenever possible. The demands of the Minnesota program would cut into that.

Nor am I convinced that Gopher athletics director Joel Maturi would change hockey coaches in a program that at least wins, while offering an extension to football coach Tim Brewster. How does that make sense?

There’s a saying in sports that a great coach can take his players and beat yours, or take your players and beat his.

I think of Blais in those terms. Many others do, too. That’s why there’s rampant speculation and fear that he’ll end up coaching the Gophers, even though Blais once said “a big city isn’t for me.”

But if they cut a big enough check, maybe it might be. If that happens, so be it. I love Dean Blais and wish him nothing but success and good fortune. If that happens to be at the tail end of his coaching career with Minnesota, my heart will be with him.

Line brawl in Denver.

Color me surprised! I thought the Fighting Sioux were the only ones that started these things. I was watching this game and at the buzzer DU and UAA had a bit of a tussle, there were a couple of punches thrown.

According the two DU FSN homer announcers, UAA had a couple of players come off the bench to get involved in the fracas. There were definately a few more Seawolves than Pioneers on the ice. Then a couple of extra Pioneers ended up on the ice. It was a dust up but the refs should have seen it coming. It could be chalked up as an epic fail on their part.

Of course, true to form George Gwozdecky aka "the Dasher Troll" was out on the ice again last night. One of these days the league has got to suspend him for his bravo sierra, he is one the ice more than the players.
DU rallied with a Tyler Ruegsegger goal in the final minute of regulation to beat gritty Alaska-Anchorage 3-2 at Magness Arena. The win kept DU in front of Minnesota-Duluth atop the WCHA heading into a bye week. The Pios next play Jan. 22 at Wisconsin, but some players may have to serve a suspension.

At the buzzer, a brawl broke out near the DU penalty box, with at least five fights unfolding before the eyes of WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod. Some were minor grab-a-guy situations, but others heated up pretty good. It’s 11:02, past my deadline, and officials still haven’t ruled on penalties and probable suspensions. I hear DU’s Rhett Rakhshani and John Ryder are suspension candidates. I’m almost positive UAA’s Chris Crowell was one of two players to come off the bench and square up.
[Denver Post Hockey blog]
Here is the penalty minutes from the Box Score. Notice for the most part how the penalties even up, the UAA player Chris Crowell got a double game disqualification, you don't see that happen very often. Your typical WCHA officiating.
