Brad Malone signs with the Av's...

Another player from UND's senior class has signed a professional contract. Former Fighting Sioux forward Brad Malone signed a two way deal and will report to Lake Erie Monsters and try and help them win a AHL Championship.

GRAND FORKS – Brad Malone started his college career with a three-point freshman season.

By the time he was done at UND the power forward from Miramichi, N.B. centered one of the top lines in the country, tallied 40 points in a season and found an NHL contract waiting for him to sign.

Malone inked that contract on Monday morning – a two-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche that will kick in starting in the fall. Malone will report immediately to Colorado’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters, and he will play in the AHL playoffs on a tryout contract.

Lake Erie, located in Cleveland, takes on the Manitoba Moose in the first round, so Malone will be playing in Winnipeg next Tuesday and Thursday.

Malone’s contract calls for him to make $600,000 next season and $775,000 in 2012-13 if he plays in the NHL, according to capgeek.com He will make $65,000 if he plays in the AHL and will earn signing bonuses of $75,000 each season.

“I think Brad made such good steady progress here,” UND coach Dave Hakstol said. “Any challenges along the way, he handled really well. He used them to improve himself and to use them as a springboard to the next step developmentally.

“He really developed himself into a powerful two-way centerman. He put himself in a real great position going into the Colorado Avalanche organization. I think he has shown physically and mentally, he’s ready to challenge to play in the NHL immediately next year.”

According to Pension Plan Puppets Matt Frattin, will play on a line with Tyler Bozak and Nazem Kadr. We might get a look into the Maple Leaf's future tonight's line up additions.

The Star ---- Joe Colborne — the 21-year-old prospect the Leafs got from Boston in the Tomas Kaberle trade — will make his NHL debut on Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens.

So will Matt Frattin, the 23-year-old NCAA forward who signed a two-year entry level contract Friday night. Frattin, a finalist for U.S.

college player of the year — losing to Miami (Ohio) forward Andy Miele, despite leading NCAA scorers with 36 goals — was picked 99th overall by the Leafs in 2007.

Former UMD Bulldog Mason Raymond's scored a hat trick last night against the Calgary Flames. Raymond's hat tricked ended up being one of the stories on the internet last night that caused a big buzz. I think it would be safe to say that Mason Raymond has had a tough go of it lately until last night when he just about doubled his season goal total. Raymond had only scored one goal in his last thirteen games before getting three last night.

Wheeler and Ryder on the trading block?

Marco Sturm has a no trade contract so you can bet that the German is going anywhere and the Bruins are going to have to make room for their two returning players, that leaves Blake Wheeler and Michael Ryder as possible trade bait. The Bruins are going to have to make room and apparently Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli hasn't ruled out sending Tyler Seguin back to Plymouth Whalers of OHL before 10-game mark.

CSNNE.com--- The B's GM is burning up the phone lines with other general managers around the league while setting the framework in place for potential deals when salary-cap issues come to a head with the Bruins.

It's getting to be about the time for the B's to kick up trade talks, and Chiarelli is doing just that for a Bruins team that's already shown plenty of promise in a handful of games this year.

Several hockey sources indicated to CSNNE.com that the Bruins are in the beginning stages of discussing deals involving several players, including Blake Wheeler and Michael Ryder. The urgency for Chiarelli and the Bruins is a need to make room for at least two forwards when Marco Sturm (knee) and Marc Savard (post-concussion syndrome symptoms) are ready to come off long-term injured reserve.

Matt Hunwick could also be in the trade mix for the Bruins if they can find a willing partner, but thus far the market hasn't quite developed for the aspiring puck-moving defenseman. Hunwick has been inconsistent over the last year-plus since a promising rookie season two years ago, but his skating ability remains unquestioned.

Mark Stuart has drawn interest around the league at points over the last two seasons, but he's an integral part of the B's leadership inside the dressing room.

Darby gives up microphone for a coaching gig

Hum! Very interesting. I am sure that there will be a few people that are unhappy about Darby no longer being on the FSN broadcast team. Now the Minnesota Wild have two former Golden Gophers and a Fighting Sioux on their coaching staff.

Minneapolis Star and Tribune ---- Head coach Todd Richards has hired Hendrickson, who scored the first home goal in Wild history, on Oct. 11, 2000 in a 3-3 tie vs. Philadelphia --, to be his third assistant. It is a full-time gig, which means Hendrickson will have to give up his job as a divisional representative with the NHL Players Association and his gig with Fox Sports North as part of the Wild broadcasts.

"You walk into it new," Hendrickson said of the transition from being on-ice to being a part of the coaching staff. It hasn't been that long since Hendrickson finished playing; he played his last NHL game with Colorado during the 2003-04 season and played professionally in Austria during the 2006-07 season.

"We feel he is a young guy, energetic," Richards said. "He's a guy who is recently retired from the game. He knows a lot about the game, about the players. We feel there is a lot he can add to our staff."
