CCHA killing the shoot out?

Here is something that I found interesting. CCHA is thinking of dismantling the shoot out because no one else is currently using them. I thought the NCAA was mandating breaking ties in the future? Personally, I find the shoot out to be exciting and would like to see the NCAA/WCHA break ties that way.

Also, this doesn’t appear to be good news for UAH. I can’t imagine the scheduling nightmare with an 11 team league. Cue the Big Ten Hockey Conference discussion again?
Shootouts out?
Anastos says the future of CCHA shootouts will be discussed in offseason meetings. They could be eliminated, since the rest of the NCAA schools are not using them. The CCHA also must decide whether to keep using four officials for financial reasons, and he doubts another school will be added with Nebraska-Omaha leaving for the WCHA.[Lansing State Journal]

  2. I don't know, it will be interesting to see what happens, in goal.

Cornell in the past plays a slow down game so it might be to the Sioux's advantage. I think we might see a couple of 2-2 games. I like what I have seen with Dell, he has been good in 2/3 of his games.

  3. Here is a question that I don't know if anyone has asked. How can the CCHA work a 11 team schedule but the WCHA couldn't?

  4. It's not that the WCHA *couldnt* do an 11 team schedule, but rather they *wouldnt*. The scheduling becomes very difficult with an odd number of teams and teams sit around idle unless they can pick up a non-conference opponent when not scheduled to play a WCHA school.

  5. It doesn't matter if it's 10 or 11 teams and the schedule apparently isn't a problem since they take off so much time over the holidays. The WCHA doesn't play a balanced conference schedule any more, opting for non-conference games and tournaments that don't draw as well as match-ups against their conference opponents. The Gophers, for instance, fill the building when UND, SCSU and UMD show up but it's easy to get a ticket when they're playing a meaningless series against somebody like Harvard, in January, no less. And they only have two games each against CC, Tech, SCSU and the Purple Cows. That's crap.

  6. I have the UND schedule for the next season posted, UND plays 4 games against UNO, BSU and SCSU. Only one sereis against DU, UMN and Wisconsin. I am going to the first games scheduled in the new BSU arena.

  7. Charles - an 11 team league works for the CCHA because of travel. Look at NMU's 98-99 schedule:

    http://www.uscho.com/schedules/team.php/northern-michigan-wildcats/-college-hockey/team,82/season,19981999/gender,m.html

You can have a team play on a Friday at Western, then Sat at Ferris. Same for NMU and LSSU or UM and MSU;Miami and OSU, BGSU and Notre Dame isn't even that far a Friday Saturday site (which just leaves UAF)...

Now, there is one of those in the WCHA, but there's no way you could do that with UMinn/Wisco, or MTU/UMD, UND/SCSU, UAA/MSU,M or the new UNO/BSU (and only has CC/DU as a "close" Fri/Sat trip)...
