UND, in conjunction with Ralph Engelstad Arena, says its willing to take suggestions to avoid some of the unfortunate incidents that happened at the rink during last weekend's series against Minnesota.
Discussions already have started with students, season-ticket holders, event staff and security personnel in this process.
"We have one of the best men's hockey programs, the best collegiate hockey facility and the best college hockey fans in the country, but there were events during last weekend's home hockey series that point to a need for change," UND athletic director Brian Faison said. "The vast majority of the nearly 12,000 people in the building both nights created an electric atmosphere.
"We don't want our fans to dampen their enthusiasm for Fighting Sioux hockey one decibel, but what I am asking them to do is direct their passion in a more positive manner." [UND Hockey]

UND, REA willing to take suggestions
This was on Brad's blog tonight and it's a good step in the right direction. It's also been addressed here and here as well. Both articles have facilitated a lot of good discussion.

UND needs to reach out with its students and come up with some good quality cheers. That everyone is able to take part in. Use the big screen to help. . . I think for the most part if that can happen most fans will out-chant the ones whose only creativity is F* the Gopher. We are the best fans in college hockey, lets get creative and prove it.
ReplyDeleteI guess they could try Kevin's idea. Recruit a group to collaberate on some clever cheers and then leave some copies on the seats so people pick those up.
ReplyDeleteWorth a try.
Regarding the incident of someone pouring a cup of beer on a gopher fan they could just raise the price so no one would do that.
Oh wait they already did that.
Part of the problem is that the F word has become acceptable in today's language with the younger kids. Last night at the game a drunk MSU student (female) was dropping it every other word as to justify why she was leaving the game...all right in front of my friend's kid. She kept making eye contact with the kid, so she knew he was there and didn't bat an eye at her dirty mouth. Seems to me, the college age and younger generation seem to think the F word is no big deal. Bring out the dishsoap!! (that's what my mom used instead of a bar. Have you ever had a little drop of that on your tongue?!? BAD DEAL and you will not say it again!!) OH, just for the record though, I really don't promote soap or anything in people's mouths...you know I'm too liberal for that. Obviously if I don't believe in spanking I don't believe in soap in the mouth! :)
ReplyDeleteKevin brings up a good point, lets use the crowd to the Sioux's advantage. Get the band and the score board in play and lets get after it.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the F'Bomb is the new S#!T. I don't know?
