No one is above the Fray.

There are some that like to take joy in others school's troubles when their athletes run into trouble with the law. I just want to remind people that most schools that have division one programs will have their issues from time to time and that no school is squeaky clean, not even Denver.

For instance; the University of Minnesota has had issues with the football, Hockey and Basketballs teams, our neighbors to the south at North Dakota State University have had their share of incidents as well. Not even Denver University is above the fray and has had their troubles as well.
Longtime University of Denver men's lacrosse coach Jamie Munro resigned today, DU athletic director Peg Bradley-Doppes said.

Munro coached DU for 11 seasons, leading them four Great Western Lacrosse League championships and two NCAA tournament appearances. He leaves with a 91-70 career record. He was the Great Western coach of the year twice (2000 and '06).

"It's been a wonderful ride at DU," Munro said.

Murno's departure comes after a tumultuous season at DU. Three players were kicked off the team midseason. Ilija Gajic, a junior, was removed from the team last month after he was arrested for a fight at a bar in January. Gajic is the younger brother of Colorado Mammoth player Nenad Gajic and the older brother of DU freshman forward Alex Gajic.

Senior Brad Richardson and sophomore Jamie Lincoln were also removed from the team last month.

According to a report in the DU student newspaper, The Clarion, a woman was attacked Jan. 28 by a group of lacrosse players at a bar.

Another player, sophomore Brendan Deblois, was arraigned on charges from the same fight, the paper said. But he was not kicked off the team last month.

Only nine of 40 players on the DU roster last season played all 15 games.

A national search for Munro's replacement will start immediately, Bradley-Doppes said. Two of Munro's assistant coaches last season have other local lacrosse ties. Assistant coach Matt Brown also plays for the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse. And Jon Torpey is a former player with the Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League.

One might want to worry about their own school before they go sniffing around someone else's. Seems to me there are a lot more serious allegations here in the DU lacrosse player's incidents. The UND incident is about two guys getting drunk and throwing their stuff in the street not quite as serious as a bar fight. Just saying! In fact if you look that DG laid out you don’t seen any criminal charges for assault.

  1. Sure Goon, no one is above the fray on getting into trouble. I'll give you that. However, it is interesting that UND has this issue more than the other WCHA schools. Seems like a pattern of behavior if you ask me.

DG is just poking fun. He always pokes fun at any school that gets into trouble. If Hak would have more discipline on these boys and they would stop their crap, you wouldn't have to worry about DG poking fun at "your" players.

Also, doing the whole "yeah, but look at these people!" argument really weakens your point and makes you look whiney. Time to take off the green tinted glasses, put down the kool aid, and admit that Hak needs to put a stop to these childish behaviors of his players if the program and the fans want the negative attention to stop.

  2. It is not just UND, it is every school because a lot of college athletes in every sport are treated like primadonnas getting a free ride. If they had to pay for college like normal people maybe they would take it more seriously. But enough of this your school my school crap, it happens everywhere at every school.

  3. I love how the Herald reports that traffic had to be diverted because of this Finley/Frattin thing. It was 3AM in Grand Forks. I bet there was one car that had to go around the stuff in the street.

Also I think more of the issue is getting caught. This type of thing truly does go on at every school in the WCHA but GF is the smallest town in the WCHA and the Sioux have one of the bigger fanbases. Meaning everything these guys do is noticed and the odds of them getting busted in a smaller town are higher than they are in say Minneapolis. This doesn't excuse their behavior because they should know they are under a micrscope and act a little more mature.

I think calling this a pattern of behavior is a bit extreme. Last time I checked getting a minor (as Oshie and Toews did a while back) is not that big of a deal. The only thing that I think was a big deal was the Bina DUI a few years back because he could have killed himself or someone else. Other than that it has been harmless IMMATURE antics.

Lastly, why do opposing school's fans show more passion writing about things like this that happen at UND then they do when it comes to writing about their own teams and the actual games they play?

  4. I would argue that Houghton, MI and Mankato, MN are much smaller than Grand Forks. But I would agree that the players at UND are much more noticeable than at any other school in the WCHA, it is pretty much North Dakota's closest thing to a professional sport, but who really cares what they did, it doesn't make the team look bad it just makes the two of them look like idiots.

  5. Sorry, I forgot about Houghton and thought Manakto was bigger.

  6. As is no surprise to any casual reader, the constant editorial distortion continues on this site!

As an aside, of course 'The Hak' sets the tone. ...And a coach that gives the crowd the finger at an opponent's rink sends a message that pushing the 'behavior envelope' is acceptable.

Hitting a mascot, pulling a player from the handshake line, and now racking up a misdemeanor over a stupid drunk waste of time is what Joe gets the most ink for.

Check the Washington Post to see how excited the Caps fans are about 'Big Joe'...

  7. Amy, Charles is right this stuff goes on all over the place it just seems to make the paper more often in Grand Forks, ND.

I would also be willing to bet that hockey players all over the country are getting cited for MIP and are involved in other incidents that may never get reported. I am not sure what else you want Hakstol to do because he took a pretty good bite out of Frattin.

  8. Come on Goon, it's Goddard. If you get mad, he wins! Just like with Dirty.

Channel your inner rage into your biking!!

  9. Donna who is mad? I am going golfing like now. I just think it's funny that he thinks DU is above the fray, that LAX team at DU was out of control this past season. No much mentioned about that.

  10. Oh you know he doesn't think that. It's just not the format of his site. He writes seriously and positively about DU and ridicules the other schools, and that's how it's always been, or so he told me.

"I think that’s part of the joke of the site. Anything to do with DU is serious, thought provoking, informative. Anything that refers to another team is a lampoon."

  11. "However, it is interesting that UND has this issue more than the other WCHA schools"

are you able to quantify this rather bold statement?

  12. "Sorry, I forgot about Houghton"

    Story of our lives :D

You're not the first, and definitely not the last :P

  13. Krago, you have to wonder if some of the other schools have as many MIP kind of stuff, however, maybe they just don't make the local paper? Grand Forks, ND isn't a big town and there is nothing to report on.
