Brashear gets 6 games.

The NHL has made an example out of Washington Capitals goon Donald Brashear. I am actually shocked that they suspended him this long based on their past decisions.
NHL.com --- Washington forward Donald Brashear has been suspended for six games by the National Hockey League and will miss Tuesday's Game 7 of the Capitals' Eastern Conference Quarterfinal round series against the New York Rangers for his action both prior to, and during, Sunday's Game 6.

Brashear was suspended one game for initiating contact with Rangers forward Colton Orr during the pre-game warm-up. Brashear was suspended for five additional games for a blind-side hit on New York forward Blair Betts at 9:54 of the first period.

"Brashear delivered a shoulder hit to an unsuspecting player," NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell said. "It is also my opinion that the hit was delivered late and targeted the head of his opponent, causing significant injury."

  1. What next? Mandatory face masks for all players starting next year? Neck guards might be a good call too. Let's put some stop signs on th back of the jerseys too. The NHL is making an example out of Brash. The initiating contact suspension is one of the gayest things I've ever heard. It's two tough guys doing their job. The fans love it. The hit was questionable. A few years ago that would be called finishing your check. Betts needs to strap on a pair and keep his head on a swivel.

  2. I think a two or three game penalty would be enough, remember one of the games is for the pre-game dust up with Colton Orr.

  4. Umm, so I am guessing none of you saw this hit. I agree, one game for the warm up nonsense is stupid. The hit on Betts was vicious though. Arms high hit to the face as Betts was skating to the bench. Although Brashear sucks at hockey and his absence will mean little to the Caps, Betts is the best penalty killer and best draw man on the Rangers. They will miss him. Colton Orr should get to play tonight and he should head hunt the Steckel / Bradley line and make the Caps pay...only fair.

  5. Alex saw the hit and it was dirty but 5 games? I wounder what the league would do if the person that laid the hit was a percieved skilled player?

  6. I hear you that 5 games is a lot. Keep in mind though that the refs (who have been horrendous in the series) missed the play completely, despite one of them being about 10 feet away. Had they seen it I think Brashear would have gotten a a major and a game misconduct, so I think 5 games may be taking that into account as well. As for whether or not a skill player would have gotten the same suspension it's tough to know...I'm not sure how many skill players in the NHL would have made that hit.

  7. This "clown" character obviously didn't see the hit on video replay, because it is very clear that the elbow was up and hit him right in the face. The puck was also long gone. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but using an elbow to hit someone in the face after the puck is long gone has been a penalty for many, many years. The suspension is a little excessive at 6 games, but the Caps don't need him anyways, he's nothing but a goon that puts his team on the penalty kill. By the way clown, the circus called, you're due back there by 4!

  9. Clown (what an amazingly appropriate name), since you are such a hockey stud let me ask you this, have you ever turned to skate to the bench at the end of a shift and been hit in the face such that you broke your eye socket? No, I didn't think so. How about having that happen in game 6 of an NHL playoff series. Right. Everyone likes to see good hard hits in a hockey game as well as the good old fashioned brawl. This was neither. Hitting someone who doesn't see you coming, when the DON'T HAVE THE PUCK, is cheap, dirty and otherwise a pussy move. Since Brashear can't skate, he can't run around the ice making big hits like some of the faster, tougher players (like A.O. or Callahan on the rangers). So he resorts to this nonsense? He should stick to fighting and you should stick to your career in the circus.
