Who has more penalty minutes?

National Statistics
Penalty Minutes: Games PIM PIM/G
1 Ferris State 36 815 22.6
2 Michigan 36 730 20.3
3 Minnesota State 34 689 20.3
4 Minnesota 32 648 20.2
5 Quinnipiac 34 683 20.1
6 Rensselaer 34 679 20.0
7 Wisconsin 34 675 19.9
8 Boston University 34 674 19.8
9 Northeastern 34 654 19.2
10 Mercyhurst 36 690 19.2
11 Alaska Anchorage 32 608 19.0
12 Yale 29 542 18.7
13 Denver 34 629 18.5
14 Miami 34 622 18.3
15 North Dakota 36 657 18.2

I keep hearing how UND is a bunch of goons. So I looked at the national statistics and this is what I found. Interesting, but UND isn't a bunch of goons and is taking about two minutes less per game in penalty minutes than the golden boys from Minnesota. Breaking it down even further, the Fighting Sioux are taking less penalties than Michigan, Boston University, Yale, North Eastern and Denver University.

  1. just an example of how hardnose teh WCHA is, they have 6 of the top 15 teams in penalty minutes.

  2. I guess this means the whole "the refs hate us" conspirancy holds less water...

  3. Traditionally, the Sioux are a penalty-ridden team in the past. They kind of remind me of the Flyers in the NHL. The numbers would tend to point elsewhere this season though. Mankato also usually takes a lot of penalties. I can't stand it when the game gets bogged down with penalties, then it becomes choppy and there's too many stoppages.

  4. Who has more penalty minutes? That's a ridiculous way to determine who the "goons" are. Who has the most majors, not counting misconducts, which are at the discretion of the officials. Come on guys, let's not look at the trippings, hookings, boardings, etc...eveyone has those, and at best they're random...someone please, provide info on the majors,... fighting, checking-from-behind, etc...Because someone averages 2-minutes more than another team in penalties means nothing...let's get inside the numbers to some meaningful information...granted, I believe the Gophers are among the cheapest teams in college hockey, but until I see more meaningful data, I think most of you are just cry-babies...let's see some real numbers....

  5. Hey Donna one good brawl or Todd Anderson reffing a series in Duluth, Mankato or Madison could change all of that. :)

  6. I went back and crunched some of the numbers and UMN has (10) ten minute misconduct and (7) five minute major penalties.

North Dakota has (10) ten minute major penalties and (5) five minute major penalties.

  7. Penalties are often a reflection of the coaching. If players are committing too many penalties, and especially too many lazy penalties (like hooking, tripping, and holding), the coaches need to punish and discipline the players. A coach cannot just continue to let it happen, and unfortunately, too many of them do. For example, St Cloud State if often one of the least-penalized teams in the WCHA year after year, and this is a direct result because of coach Motzko's discplinary style of coaching. Same thing happens in football: if a player commits these penalties in practice, he needs to be punished by running laps or something, otherwise it'll occur in the games.

  8. I think penalty minutes are a great reflection on how a team plays and how they are coach. Also, SCSU is very soft team that can be defeated by checking them hard.

I think Hak has had the Sioux playing very disciplined hockey. If you look at the top teams on this list BU is taking a ton of penalties (according the INCH boys). Killing them is what makes a team good/great. I think UND has done a pretty good job killing the Penalties as well.

  9. That's exactly what I want Goon, and I'm sorry I didn't know where to get this info, otherwise I would have...doesn't appear to me that you could call either team "goons" or cheap...So many of these calls have to do with randomness, it's really not fair to pick on one...I know that the a-hole from collegehockeynews..."adam-the-gay-guy", always picks on the Sioux, but he never really look at the numbers...not just overall numbers, but numbers vs the Sioux, in the games played...who cares what you do when each team gets 5-two minute jobs a game...IF, one team had 10 five-minute fightings and another had 2, you may be able to label one a goon...but as close as they are, I don't see how UMTC can be goons and UMD is not...they both play great college hockey...

  10. Cs I got the stats fight from College Hockey News click on the box scores and you will get the number of penatlies and power play numbers.

Here is a good number Amy from lets go mavs said her team had Todd Anderson as a ref a lot so I went back to the box scores and she was right the Mavericks had Todd Anderson 12 times and Derrick Shepherd 6 times that is over half of their games. Crazy eh?

  11. Hey Goon...I think Hak has the Sioux playing disciplined hockey too, and he better, as the WCHA is just looking for an excuse to stick it to them...but in the long run, is there really a goon type team in the WCHA? I don't think so. I was at The Ralph for the series in early January...Oh, what a cheap plane fare that was...would have paid double...still, would, but NWA won't take my money...just take 2-points from Bucky this weekend and you can call us goons all you desire...BUT, there really are no goon-teams in the WCHA, or all of college hockey for that matter...watch out for Northeastern this year and Merrimack next year....

    ReplyDelete
  12. You heard it here first...Merrimack is not going to be a patsy...especially with the way the Sioux play early in the year...I love the Sioux, but I do watch Eastern hockey...it's good...BUT, beyond that, let's take care of business this weekend..,
PS...I hate FSN-WI for not showing the game this weekend...

  13. Man...sorry guys...I want the Sioux out here in Bridgeport...let's get a #3 seed to make me happy...less than an hour away...this Bracketolgy sucks, and on top of that, it's usually a day late...guess Obama needs to fund them.....

  16. Hey Skippy what part of your body did you pull those stats out of?
Also, I am surprised you're not over on GPL talking about firing Don LUCIA.

  18. Regarding Lucia and the Gophers: They miss Stu Bickel (who went pro in August). They miss hard-working freshman Taylor Matson (knee).

I think they should play (big defenseman) Brian Schack more, and they should play Justin Bostrom (hard-working wing )more.

It is a young (three guys are high school age) team. Give Lucia another year at least.

  19. ...Also Mister Goon Sir; if you could let me know where the name 'Skippy' comes from, there is a chance I might think its clever. For now, it appears to be a one-person inside joke.

  20. Hey Charlie could you keep it to the same year the fact remains that UMN has taken more penalty minutes this season.

    ReplyDelete
  21. HAH! I can understand your distaste for the facts I presented above. They speak to a solid trend that is nothing to be proud of. (I will give Hakstol 'style points' for flipping the bird at fans - NOT!)

Masterful piece of blogging that the fact that the Golden Gophers have more penalties this year than the Flirting Sue do. (My opinion is that this will prove to be anomolous.)
