Grand Forks Lawyer to Chair ND Nickname Committee
2/17/2009
A 10-member committee has been formed to consider the future of the University of North Dakota`s Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.
Board of Higher Education member Grant Shaft will chair the group. Shaft is a Grand Forks attorney and former state legislator.
The group`s first meeting has not yet been scheduled.
The panel includes representatives from UND`s student body, members of the Standing Rock and Spirit Lake Sioux tribes and representatives of Sen. Byron Dorgan and Gov. John Hoeven.
The members are Shaft; Ryan Bernstein, Hoeven`s staff attorney; Robert Boyd, a UND vice president; Steve Burian, a UND alumnus who heads a Grand Forks civil engineering and consulting company; and Pam Gulleson, Dorgan`s state director.
Other members are Jody Hodgeson, general manager of the Ralph Engelstad Arena; Standing Rock Sioux tribal member Tom Iron; Spirit Lake reservation resident Erich Longie; UND law student Jeremiah Lunde; and UND student Celeste Melander.

First step in changing the name?
I believe this might be the first step in what some of us fear is coming, the changing of the Fighting Sioux nickname. I am not a fan of changing the name but I don't see how the University of North Dakota keeps the name. Stay tuned;I will keep up with this issue and post anything related to the Fighting Sioux name.

How about 'The University of South Canada Flirting Sue'?

ReplyDeleteSpirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux on the naming commity? I feel like they lose there voice when they support the change.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, political correctness gone mad. They don't support the fighting sioux name and yet are still invited to the table because why? I say they sit, and I mean no disrespect, they've just made there own decision.
I do not follow this as closely as many of your readers, but I think HeavyD makes a very good point.
ReplyDeleteThis who situation has me frustrated, a lot of the people that are against the name are not even Native American or Sioux a lot of them are the liberal college professors.
ReplyDeleteSo I don't know what to make out of this I don't know how they arrived at this board. I have a feeling I know where it is going to go.
Goon,
ReplyDeleteI am not being my usual obnoxious self at this point because this topic is a biggy.
IF the name is going to change, is there some way you and the UND faithful who truly care can rally using petitions and/or some other means to come up with a name that matters to those of you who care the most?
My hunch is that a name created by a careful committee is not going to mean much to you die-hards.
It still makes no sense to me. These PC, "diversity outreach" groups want it both ways. If we switched to a Norwegian or German mascot to go with the culture up here, they would just complain we weren't being sensitive enough to ethnic and native cultures. It would just turn into another case like DU's Boone. I'd rather have no logo than their current one...
ReplyDeleteSo i am a irish man can i get the fighting irish name changed. i have heard the fighting part has some to do with the debate. Of course i am kidding and joking but i find it funny how the nickname can be hostile and abusive when delt with native americans but not for other types of people like the irish.
ReplyDeleteListen to Gary, Mister Goon. Talk to dggoddard and print up some 'Bring Back Sioux' shirts :D
ReplyDeleteI find all of those Sioux casinos hostile and abusive to our financial well being. Is there any way we can get rid of them? Or do we just have to boycott them out of business? This situation can work both ways.
ReplyDeleteI find this interesting. I see no representation from anyone related to athletics or their alumni. Actually, alumnus seems very under represented, yet Dorgan, who just helped mortgage our kids and grand kids futures is there to provide incite. I'm sure it will be pc so that everyone is "happy".
ReplyDeleteWe will always be The Fighting Sioux to me. Change the name if they want, but I plan on singing "The Home of The Siouxxx!" at the top of my lungs and wearing the color until I'm old and grey.
I should be on this committee
ReplyDeleteYeah I would gladly take a seat on this commision. I think its going to be a show trial though.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure glad that they came up with a guy that traveled to Arizona for his undergraduate work to run the committee.
