Years ago there was an UND game where the referee's plane was late. John Knauf moved up to referee and they filled in with a couple high school guys (I guess) as linesmen.
The referees showed up for the third period, leading to the same, but more literal, joke.
And It's not even from a WMU game. That's one of our classic student section chants, it happens early in the third period of almost every home game.
