Maxim Lapierre Suspended For Five Games

In my opinion, this suspension isn't long enough. I would have liked to have seen Maxim Lapierre get a longer suspension. When are the players going to learn, you can't make these hits? Someone is going to get killed on the ice.

Winnipeg Jets’ Jacob Trouba stretchered off after missed check

Dangerous moment for Winnipeg Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba as he missed a check and was carried off of the ice on a stretcher. As you can see by the video, Trouba attempted to check St. Louis Blues defenseman Jordan Leopold and went face-first into the boards.

Cody McLeod has in person hearing for hit on Niklas Kronwall

Here's the good news, Colorado Avalanche forward Cody McLeod is set to have the book thrown at him. The Colorado Avalanche forward has in person hearing for hit with the NHL Department of Player Safety, for his dirty, bush league, unnecessary hit on Red Wings Defenseman Niklas Kronwall. Logic is, with an in person hearing, he's going to get a least a 5-game suspension. If I was McLeod, I would be a bit worried. Buffalo Sabres "Rat" Patrick Kaleta was given a 10-game suspension after an in person hearing for his dirty hit on Jack Johnson. Of course, he's going to appeal that suspension.

NHL.COM -- Avalanche left wing Cody McLeod will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety for a boarding incident during Thursday's game against the Detroit Red Wings at Pepsi Center.

McLeod was offered the opportunity for an in-person hearing as required by provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for any suspension that can exceed five games.

At 2:13 of the first period, McLeod was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding Detroit's Niklas Kronwall. Kronwall remained down and was taken from the ice on a stretcher. He did not return. After the game, the Red Wings announced Kronwall sustained a concussion and cuts to his right ear.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: boarding. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

Detroit won the game, 4-2.

Blues Rat Maxim Lapierre suspended indefinitely for dirty hit on Dan Boyle

I am imploring the head of player safety Brendan Shanahan; please throw the book at this Rat, Blues forward Maxim Lapierre for dirty, bush league hit on Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle. Enough is enough. The good news is, Lapierre has an in person hearing with the department of player safety, which means the NHL is probably going to throw the book at him.

Sharks forward Joe Pavelski was less than impress with Lapierre and had this to say after the game. “Things like that happen, especially when idiots are idiots,” Joe Pavelski said. “Dan's a world-class defenseman, there's straight numbers [from behind]. There's guys in this league that will target that. It doesn't matter. They just go. It sucks.”

From past history, Boyle's a star and Lapierre is not. I am predicting  a five-game suspension. I would love to see more.

Cody McLeod's inexcusable hit on Niklas Kronwall

There's no excuse for this duty, senseless, hit by the Colorado Avalanche hack Cody McLeod. This hit should garner McLeod at least five games, there is no way that you can defend this hit. If you watch the video you will see that McLeod targets the head of Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall, with his elbow, knocking him out and sending him off the ice on a stretcher.

Edit: Weekend ahead against Miami

Miami University (Ohio) logo
Miami University (Ohio) logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
This weekend, the University of North Dakota plays Miami University in the first ever National Collegiate Hockey Conference game between the two teams on October 18-19, 2013 in Oxford, Ohio. All-time, UND is 2-0-1 against the Miami RedHawks, but the two teams haven’t played on the ice since November 11-28-2009, when UND and Miami skated to a wild 5-5 finish at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Recently, UND head coach Dave Hakstol talked about the upcoming series with the Miami RedHawks. There’s a building excitement surrounding the new league and the match-up with the RedHawks.

“We will be starting off the NCHC in mid-October,” Hakstol said. “Out in Miami, that should be a heck of series. We’ll generate an instant rivalry (with them), in my opinion.

So, Miami is currently an unknown to the UND hockey team and their fans. Nobody on the 2013-14 UND hockey team, except senior goalie Clarke Saunders, has played against the Miami RedHawks.

This should be a good matchup, Miami and UND were picked to finished first and second in the NCHC Media Poll. According to UND head coach Dave Hakstol, UND is a balanced team, and this is one of the more balanced teams that UND has had in his 10 years as head coach.

“We got tremendous balance within our team’” Hakstol said. “That’s the one thing that we know, we don’t know a lot of specifics, but we do know that we have a tremendous amount of balance on our hockey team.”

UND Top Line

10 Adam Tambellini (1g-1a—2pts) – 9 Drake Caggiula (2g-2a—4pts)  – 19 Rocco Grimaldi (2g-3a—5pts)

UND Top Defense Pairing

Dillon Simpson (0g-0a—0pts) and Jordan Schmaltz (0g-1a—1pts)

UND Top Goalie

Zane Gothberg 1-0-1, 1.21 GAA, .0955 save percentage.

Prediction on the weekend

I predict that this series will end in a split. That’s my best guess. But, any result other than that won’t surprise me either.

UND Hockey: Ryan Gropp backs out of his commitment to UND.

Western Hockey League

There's big news to hit Grand Forks, ND today. Highly sought UND recruit Ryan Gropp has backed out of his commitment to UND to sign a contract with the Seattle Thunderbird's of the WHL, thus, ending his college hockey eligibility. Personally, I don't know how de-committing from UND and signing with the Western Hockey League is going to help his development, but whatever.
PENTICTON, BC – The Penticton Vees Jr. ‘A’ Hockey Club announced Tuesday that forward Ryan Gropp (96) has left the team for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League (WHL).

President, General Manager and Head Coach Fred Harbinson’s statement:

“Ryan’s mindset last summer when he committed to UND (University of North Dakota) and decided to return to Penticton, was that he would enter the NCAA as a true freshman which coincides with his draft year.

Unfortunately Ryan did not get off to the start everyone expected this season, hence possibly affecting his long term goals. After a few discussions with Ryan and his family, we came to the conclusion it would be best for Ryan to change directions and move on to the WHL.

Ryan was a great teammate during his time in Penticton, and our organization wishes him nothing but the best in his future hockey endeavors.”

Jason Chimera boards Justin Schultz

Ouch! Not a good hit, actually, this is a very dangerous hit by Washington Capitals forward Jason Chimera on former Wisconsin Badger and Edmonton Oilers defenseman Justin Schultz. I would call this a push check. Chimera only received a two-minutes penalty for his efforts. Schultz appeared to be okay.

Winnipeg Jets: Mark Scheifele trips himself and Gionta goes to the box

I have seen some horrible officiating, but this one really takes the cake. As you can see from the video, Jets forward Mark Scheifele actually trips himself and the ref assesses Stephen Gionta a two minute minor for tripping. I do expect the NHL officials to do a better job.

NCAA Hockey: Mike Hastings perplexed by officiating

I can say that I don't blame the coach for being upset, and it could cause a head coach some concern when they're doing their non-schedules in the future. I wonder if the on-ice officials can strike a balance where they can protect the integrity of the game, by calling the right amount of penalties, as well as protecting the puck carrier. At the same time, not affect the flow of the game too much. No one comes to watch an official call a game.

I also agree that the refs have to cal the game tighter, but how tight? But the refs also need to find a happy medium. If the refs call 20-plus penalties in a game, it's going to affect the flow of the game and you're going to end up with games that are almost three hours long.
Puckato -- Last January, Cornell coach Mike Schafer blasted the WCHA referees after a 2-1 loss at Denver, calling their performance “disgusting” and ending his rant with, “I won’t come back to the WCHA.”

I have to say that this is an interesting and thought provoking read. On Saturday night, after losing 3-0 in a game that included a combined 25 penalties for 80 minutes, Minnesota State’s Mike Hastings had a message for Schafer (or to that night's refs).

“One thing, Mike Schaffer, I want to let you know, we’re even now,” he said, “because a team from out west came out here and … I saw you last year and it sounded like you got it pretty bad. And I’m going to tell you that I believe east and west are even now.”

Providence plays in Hockey East, not Cornell’s ECAC, but this was hardly the first time a coach has expressed frustration with the way the game is called conference to conference, region to region.
This past weekend, UND killed 15 of 16 Vermont power plays. That's a lot of penalties over the course of a weekend. Last night, during the post game press conference, UND head coach Dave Hakstol said that he agrees with the way the games were called last weekend.

“I am on board with the emphasis on the hooks; basically protecting the offensive player’s hands,” Hakstol said. “Allowing an offensive player on the wall to protect the puck without being held, those are the three that I think are significant and good steps for our game.”

The UND coach went on to explain that the players have to make adjustments to the way the refs are calling the game as well.

"Our guys made a conscientious effort to skate with guys and not use their stick on them," Hakstol said."It’s about creating angles and back-pressuring, instead of using your stick.”

If the refs keep calling the game this way, they will. make adjustments to the game is called. Also, it will be interesting to see how the WCHA calls their games this season.

Dubuque Fighting Saints: Defenseman Dylan Chanter hurt in fight (Video)

My thought and prayers are with Dylan Chanter. Sounded like an ugly incident, no one wants to see this happen in a hockey game. Thank God the kid is okay and if we get an update of his status I will pass it along.

The United States Hockey League has suspended Saturday night's Dubuque Fighting Saints and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders game following an injury to Dubuque defenseman Dylan Chanter. The RoughRiders held a 2-0 lead over the Fighting Saints when the injury occurred midway through the second period at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Chanter was injured when he fell to the ice following a fight. He was attended to by trainers and medical staff on site, and was transported to a local hospital shortly following. Chanter was conscious following the injury and when he was removed from the arena.
The Fighting Saints will provide an update on Chanter when one becomes available. Additional information about the resumption of Saturday night's game will come at a later date.
The United States Hockey League announced that the game between the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday, October 12th has been suspended. Dubuque Fighting Saints defenseman Dylan Chanter was injured after falling to the ice at the 11:58 mark of the second period during the game, played at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He was immediately attended to at the arena by medical personnel before being transported to a local hospital for further care. While all parties are awaiting further information, Chanter was conscious as he was transported from the arena.
The Office of the Commissioner and general management of both the Fighting Saints and the RoughRiders concurred that it was in the best interest of the players not to continue the contest.
Further details as to the player’s condition, as well as a rescheduling of the game, will be issued by the Commissioner's Office as soon as they are available.

Womens Hockey: USA and Canada line brawl

Yesterday, the USA and Canada women's team squared off in a pre-Olympic hockey game in Burlington, Vermont. During the third period, former UND All-American forward Monique Lamoureux bumped the Canadian goalie Shannon Szabados causing a skirmish. Actually, some might refer to it as a line brawl. Here's a link to the video, you can take a look for yourself. USA was unable to complete the comeback and ended up losing the game 3-2.
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Hayley Wickenheiser set up two goals and goalie Shannon Szabados held on after a late brawl to help Canada beat the United States 3-2 on Saturday night in the opening game of the pre-Olympic tour.

After a U.S. player clipped Szabados outside her crease with 3:03 left, all 10 skaters squared off and two from each team were charged with major penalties for roughing and game misconducts.

"We had a similar scrap in 2010, so I guess we have one every Olympic cycle to get it out of our system," said Wickenheiser who has been a member of the Canadian national team since 1993. "It was kind of fun to see, and it brought a lot of intensity to another
