(Video) Andrew Shaw and Jonathan Quick mix it up, Crawford and Quick butt heads
Exciting end of the second period of game six. First, it looks like Andrew Shaw is helped into L.A. Kings goalie Jonathan Quick. It was obvious that Quick was still fuming from that incident, butts heads with Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford on the way off of the ice. Checking the box score, there were no penalty assessed.
(Video) Chicago Blackhawks score two goals in 1:37 - game 6
The Chicago Blackhawks scored two quick goals 1:37 minutes apart in the opening minutes of the second period to take a 2-1 lead in game six.
Kane is smoking hot, and in the last two games has scored (1g-4a-5pts).

Lambert, "Stop your complaining about diving already"
Today, Ryan Lambert of Puck Daddy fame has a blog post about diving. I always love those writers and fans that tell us to stop complaining about the on-ice officials. Moreover, I also love the people that tell us to stop complaining about player embellishment.
Seriously, I don't know too many hockey fans that want to see any more displays like these two examples. I posted two videos of Vancouver Canucks frauds Alex Burrows and Ryan Kessler. These two are the epitome of diving. Burrows is known around the NHL as being a head snapping embellishing clown. Lastly, Lambert a known Boston Bruins hater, is again using his blog to troll the Boston Bruins fan base, but none of us should be shocked by that.
People seem particularly aggrieved these days by “the head snap,” that is, when a stick or a glove gets somewhere up near a guy's face, he throws his head back. Tomas Plekanec famously did this in Game 4, after everyone talked about how both teams had “embarrassed” the refs by embellishing for calls in Game 3. The reason why is simple: They'd been able to do it to great effect in the past, but because the officials were on the lookout for it, they spotted it in Plekanec's case. The guy who gets caught is always the one who gets vilified, and the quote-unquote hilarious hashtag “#Plekanecing” quickly made its way around social media (spurred on by, who else, Bruins media hacks). The reason for this is that it's hard to take a picture of throwing yourself on the ice with the force of 10 atomic bombs because a guy's stick tapped the back of your skate (#Marchanding), and that people's memories are short (#Boychuking).I am sorry, but diving and embellishment has gotten way out of hand in all levels of hockey. It doesn't matter if you watch the NHL, College or youth hockey. Hockey players are flopping all over the ice to get calls and draw penalties. Face it, diving is poor sportsmanship and it cheapens the game of hockey. We don't want the NHL resembling soccer.

Kings want to close out series tonight
While I think that the L.A. Kings are saying all of the right things, I also think this series is over tonight. Just my prediction, and we will know tonight about 10:00 pm., baring overtime. Thoughts?
I just happen to think this is the Kings year. As a UND hockey fan, there's a very good chance that the a former UND hockey player will again be a Stanley Cup Champion. Whoever advances from the Western Conference, is going to be the favorite to win the Stanley Cup.
Thomas Drance, the score -- Though the Kings - who still hold a three-games-to-two lead in the series - have some margin for error, they're well aware that you can't let a dangerous, experienced team like the Blackhawks off the mat.
"We know we can't let it go to Game 7," Doughty told Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times. "They're a good team in their home arena. They feed off their fans. It's a tough arena to play in. So we need to win [Friday]."
Continued Doughty: "No matter what, this game has to be ours. It's so important for us to advance to the Stanley Cup Final that we win this game. If we give them this game they're going to have so much more life and they're going to be a different team."

New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens Handshake, no Shenanigans
After watching the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens go through the handshake line, it was nice to see a classy handshake. These two teams killed each other on the ice. There were two suspensions from this series (Brandon Prust and John Moore).

Ruh-roh! The New York Rangers might want to put the Montreal Canadiens away in game six or they could end up facing Carey Price in game seven. Price was at practice, wearing full gear, and did face some shots. Price also did some side-to-side drills. Are you thinking what I am thinking?
Canada's Stanley Cup Drought
I can't believe it's been 20 years since the Stanley Cup was won by a team that resides in Canada. Ironically, it was the Montreal Canadiens that last won the Stanley Cup and they're probably not going to get out of the Eastern Conference Finals. The handshake game is tonight.
Mark Spector, Sportsnet -- Every June day was Edmonton Oilers Day in Edmonton 35 years ago. And when the Oilers failed to make it the Stanley Cup just twice in the eight years between 1983 and 1990, well, no problem. Montreal (1986) and Calgary (1989) took care of the Cup for Canada in Edmonton’s off years, even playing each other in ’89.
Can you imagine? Eight straight Cups featuring a Canadian team?
In the 22 Stanley Cups contested since, our country has sent six teams to the finals, winning just once. Ottawa took a turn in 2007, and each of Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver (twice) have suffered the indignity of a Game 7 loss in the final in the years since the Habs won our last Cup over Los Angeles in 1993.
(Video) History Will Be Made: Chris Kreider / Carey Price.
I think a fitting end to this series would be for New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider to score the game-winning goal.
If the #habs are going to blame Chris Kreider, they should be pointing the finger at Brandon Prust, too: http://t.co/QVRY9aY4Yg

That's the first ever overtime game-winning goal that Chicago Blackhawks forward Michal Handzus has scored and I guess he picked a good time to score it. NCAA Hockey: Penalize the players who Embellish?
I am a subscriber to XM Radio, and I listen to the Hockey Night In Canada Radio a couple of times a week. Today, Hockey Night in Canada Radio had an awesome segment on officiating during the 3:00 p.m. hour.
Former NHL Official and current ECAC head of officials Paul Stewart was on with the HNIC co-hosts (Rob Pizzo and Elliotte Friedman), and he had some interesting things to say. One thing that caught my attention was his proposal that he made to the NCAA about punishing players that embellish. There's more coming on that this week.
Some of his proposal was to give players who embellish a five-minute misconduct penalty. After three five-minute misconducts, that player would sit for a game. After four five-minute misconducts, that player would sit for two games. Also, the linesmen and refs could make the call. I think it's a great idea.

Russia - Finland WC 2014, Malkin breaks Haula jaw with dirty cross-check
If you haven't seen it, this is worth a look. In the championship game of the World Championship, Russian forward Evgeni Malkin's cross-checked Finland's Erik Haula in the face and injured him. I think this is one of the dirtiest cross-checks that I have seen this season. It was blatant, and one could make that argument that it was an attempt to injure. Uh-yeah, obviously. Malkin broke Haula's jaw with that bush league move.
According to Michael Russo of the Star and Tribune, Haula will not need surgery, that is very good news. The Russian ended up winning the game. As you can see from the video the reffing was very suspect.
Russo's Rants -- Some Wild news: Center Erik Haula, who left the day after the playoffs to represent Finland in the world championships, broke his jaw in the gold-medal game against Russia when he was cross-checked in the face by superstar Evgeni Malkin. No penalty was called. Haula sustained a nondisplaced fracture that will not require surgery. The injury will take three to four weeks to heal, the Wild says.
Are the Rangers and Habs gooning it up?
This is the series I expected the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins to have, but didn't. There three more hearings with the NHL's Department of Player Safety today. Shouldn't be too much longer and we will have the rulings from the league office. Suspensions are usually announced in the late afternoon after the hearings are over. This has been an emotional, hard fought series, and it's starting to show up on the score sheet.
That being said, the Rene Bourque cross check and the Derek Dorsett headbutt could end up costing both teams more games. John Moore is most definitely going to miss a game or two for his dirty hit on Dale Weise.

Stick a fork in the Chicago Blackhawks they're done, finished
University of North Dakota hockey fans are watching this series with much interest. I know that some aren’t going to like what I have to say, but stick a fork in the Blackhawks, because they’re done. The L.A. Kings have taken control of this series, and will be shaking hands with the Hawks at the end of game five in Chicago. The Kings are starting to resemble the ones that won the Stanley Cup in 2012, mean, relentless and solid defensively.
The Kings have been relentless in this series and haven’t let the Blackhawks get
This Kings have done a good job shutting down the Chicago Blackhawks best players, while Jonathan Toews has been able to score (3g-1a—4pts). His sidekicks have been almost invisible. Patrick Kane has scored (0g-1a—1pts) and Bryan Bickell has scored (0g-1a—1pts) against the Kings, that’s two points between the both of them. Marian Hossa has been okay, scoring (0g-3a—3pts). The Hawks best players need to be better if they want to extend this series.
I have to wonder if it’s a coincidence, but in this series against the Blackhawks the Kings are 3-0 when former Fighting Sioux defenseman Matt Greene is in the line-up. Breaking it down further, the Kings are statistically a better team (8-4, .667) with Greene in the line-up. When Greene is sitting in the stands, the L.A. Kings own a (3-3, .500). You have to wonder if the Kings want to have Greene sitting in the stands, anymore.
(Video) Fraser: Making the call (again) on embellishment
It's about time that someone said this. It adds credibility when a former NHL Official is the one that is pointing this out. As a hockey fan, I have become disgusted with the amount of embellishment that plagues the NHL and NCAA hockey.
Kerry Frasier, TSN -- I concur with Mike Milbury and Eddie O's analysis with regard to obvious embellishment committed by PK Subban and Tomas Plekanec in the second period of Sunday night's game. This closing paragraph really hit home with me.
Even though the stick of Rick Nash did catch Subban in the face the upward launch with both legs was not a natural reaction or fall from being struck in that manner. Plekanec's theatrical performance was the absolute worst when he threw his head back and grabbed at his face after the flat blade of Brian Boyle's stick slapped nothing but shoulder pad!
Even though Boyle's stick did not quite fit the criteria of a "high stick (above the height of the opponents shoulders) it was used in a careless manner and could certainly result in a slashing penalty. Plekanec's embellishment was also worthy of a penalty that should have resulted in an on-ice numerical strength of four aside. Given Plekanec's blatant overreaction it could even been deemed a 'stand alone' embellishment penalty if the ref wanted to send a clear message but I doubt he would receive much support.
Until players that embellish are penalized by the referees and held accountable by the League with published fines and suspensions as prescribed in rule 64.3, this illegal act will continue to plague the game. It's time for everyone involved to man-up.

Winona Minnesota-area inventor creates robot for ice resurfacing
The Zamboni could be a think of the past, in the near future.
Tesla Rodriquez, Winona Daily News -- Buffalo County resident Paul Van Eijl said his invention, which he calls the “Ice Jet,” will do the ice resurfacing job of the classic machine much quicker — in about a minute or so — using GPS coordinates to control multiple machines at once.According to the author's comment, The "Ice Jet" is planned to complete the resurfacing of the whole rink in one minute or so.
It won’t need a driver, will be electrically powered and will recycle the ice collected by melting it in the machine and using the water to resurface the hockey rink. His invention isn’t on the market yet, though a prototype has been enough to generate a phone call from the reality television show “Shark Tank,” which highlights inventors and entrepreneurs hoping to make it big.
“It’s really doing the same thing (as a Zamboni),” Van Eijl said as he stood next to his prototype on a recent day. “You’re just basically making it eight times as efficient.”
The 1940s-era, ice-resurfacing Zamboni has been an icon in hockey, as it putters around the arena between games and periods to smooth the ice for players. And for the most part, it’s remained unchanged, Van Eijl said. Most run on gas or propane — although newer ones are electric — and are about the size of a truck. Each requires a driver, and use quite a bit of water.

This is a weak penalty in my opinion. Montreal Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec should have gotten a Emmy for his award winning performance. No really, he should have gotten a two-minute minor for embellishment. Now lets be clear, New York Rangers forward Brian Boyle shouldn't be hitting Plekanec up high with his stick, but that's a brutal call by the officials. Plekanec would make the Vancouver Canucks forwards' Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows blush with that one.
Is Pierre Maguire going to the Pens?
I would imagine that NHL hockey fans in the USA would cheer on such a move, unless you're a fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Think of it this way, NHL fans in the USA would no longer have to listen to NBC Sports NHL analyst Pierre Maguire as he annoys fans from between the players boxes. As a regular NHL viewer, I would applaud such a move.
Bob Pompeani Show --- Scotty Bowman worked closely with NBC Sports NHL analyst Pierre Maguire who has been rumored to be a possible candidate for the open general manager position with the Pens.
He tells Bob that Maguire has been a candidate recently for many open positions and that he has a real desire to return to a team.

(Video) Rangers Daniel Carcillo Car Bombed by the NHL, Prust and Dorsett fight
Today, the NHL car bombed Daniel Carcillo. The Rangers pugilist has been suspended for 10 games for his abuse of an NHL official, I think the suspension should be 20 games. There's no excuse for pushing, hitting and or elbowing an NHL linesman or referee.
Looking at the video, this was in the first six minutes of the first period of game three. I included the P.K. Subban and Derek Dorsett exchange. It almost looks like a slew-foot. There was no penalty on the play.
The fight between Dorsett and Brandon Prust is per the hockey code. I don’t have a problem with this fight, and in this instance the code worked. Prust took out one of the Montreal Canadiens with a dirty hit, Dorset challenged him to a fight and Prust accepted the challenge.
Brandon Prust Hit on Derek Stepan, Prust suspended two games
A two-game suspension is an joke , and no where near enough for this dirty, predatory hit.
These types of dirty hits have no place in the game of hockey, at any level. There's no defending this hit. It's a brutal, late, and it's interference. There's also significant contact with the head. This hit is unacceptable. Because of Brandon Prust's dirty hit, Derek Stephan has a broke jaw that required surgery today.

IIHF Hockey: Proposed Rule Changes
I was looking at some of the proposed IIHF hockey rule changes and I think these changes would actually set the game backwards. Getting rid of the no-touch icing, is a horrible idea.
Also, re-introducing the red-Line offsides is another bad idea that would probably slow the game down. I just hope that the NCAA and the NHL doesn't decide that they need to have these rules too. s/t to the Hockey news and the IIHF.
The IIHF Rule Book is revised every four years and for the 2014 IIHF Annual Congress 86 proposals for 57 rules came together from five committees and several IIHF member national associations.
Some major proposals that will be individually discussed and voted on include:
to standardize the dimensions of the ice surface
to move the goal line closer to the end of the rink (from 4 to 3.3 metres)
**the reinstatement of the red-line offside
**the introduction of touch icing
to move the blue line in order to standardize and also increase the offensive zones
to remove the “cheater piece” of goalkeepers’ catching gloves
to double the penalty for goalkeeper interference to 2+2 minutes
to penalize any deliberate grabbing, twisting or holding of an opponent’s head with a major penalty
to forbid bass drums at ice rinks in addition to air horns and whistles already mentioned in the current rule book.
that goalkeepers cannot freeze the puck if the shot originates from outside the blue line

Senators Urge N.F.L. to Act on Redskins’ Name
This article was linked on Sioux Sports today, I thought it was worth a look. It would appear that the NFL's Washington Redskins are getting pressure to change their Redskins nickname by the US Senate.
WASHINGTON — Fifty members of the Senate have signed a letter to the N.F.L. to urge its leadership to press the Washington Redskins to change the team name in the aftermath of tough sanctions against the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers for racially charged comments. Here's what Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had to say on the matter.
The position embraced by half of the Senate, and the willingness of the lawmakers to sign a formal request to Commissioner Roger Goodell, escalated the fight over the name and represented an effort to put increasing pressure on the league, which receives a federal tax break, and the ownership of the team.
“The N.F.L. can no longer ignore this and perpetuate the use of this name as anything but what it is: a racial slur,” said the letter, which was circulated by Senator Maria Cantwell, Democrat of Washington, and endorsed by Senator Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, the majority leader. “We urge the N.F.L. to formally support a name change for the Washington football team.”
“I have 22 tribal organizations in Nevada,” Reid said. “They are not mascots. They are human beings. And this term Redskins is offensive to them.”It's going to be interesting to see how this turns out.

The Thomas Vanek question
Eric Duatschek asks some very good questions. Personally, I hope that Thomas Vanek still has a chance to make it to Minnesota. I think he could be the final piece for the Minnesota Wild. Well... that and a solid starting goaltender that can stop the puck and play a majority of the games. I think the Wild have that with Karcy Kuemper. Time will tell.
Eric Duhatschek, Globe and Mail -- THE THOMAS VANEK CONUNDRUM: When times were good in Montreal, there was some talk that the Canadiens might actually consider bidding for Vanek in free agency. Now, it seems highly unlikely, given what a negligible impact he’s had on their run to the semi-finals. But will Minnesota welcome him now, after making inquiries at the deadline, but ultimately settling for Matt Moulson, because the acquisition cost and the dollars out were more affordable? Moulson wasn’t a great fit in Minnesota and the New York Islanders would do well to try and kiss and make up, after dealing him for Vanek in the first place. Minnesota has the great good fortune of having Dany Heatley’s $7-million cap hit disappear after this season, but committing that money to Vanek, a player of questionable playoff pedigree, seems ill-advised at this stage. The Wild seem to have a good thing going, with the group they’ve assembled now. Sitting out free agency this summer makes the most sense for them. One problem for Vanek is that he's been less than impressive during the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Vanek has scored (5g-3a-8pts) in 13 games. He's also a (-3). That's not going to make teams want to sign him for 7+ million a season.

First off, these are hits that need to be removed from the game of hockey. New York Rangers forward Benoit Pouliot saw numbers and shouldn't have hit Montreal Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin.
All right, but the acting job to sell the penalty was ridiculous, that was worthy of a unsportsmanlike penalty itself. And of course the Canadiens fans wanted a five-minute major on Pouliot. Thoughts?
Brutal blindside hit by Benoit Pouliot on Alexei Emelin who headed to the dressing room. He should have been tossed. #GoHabsGo #NYRangers
